Introduction

30 YEARS, 300 ALUMNI

For three decades, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary has sought to serve Christ and His church by equipping pastors, teachers, and missionaries with a distinctly Reformed vision of ministry. From the beginning, our mission has been simple yet profound: to unite rigorous academic training with experiential piety, so that graduates might faithfully shepherd God’s people around the world. Today, as we look back on thirty years and give thanks for over three hundred alumni serving on every continent, we invite you to join us in celebrating God’s faithfulness. This book tells the story of small beginnings, persevering labor, and a future filled with hope under the Lord’s providential hand.

President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

DR. ADRIAAN C. NEELE

How We Began

THE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS OF A REFORMED VISION

In the early 1990s, a vision was quietly taking root—one born out of a deep conviction that the church needed ministers who were both theologically sound and pastorally tender, men shaped by the riches of the Reformed and Puritan tradition. What began as a small initiative with only a handful of students and minimal resources has grown, by God’s grace, into Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary: a globally respected institution with a heart for Christ, His church, and the truth of His Word.

Founded in 1995 under the guidance and prayerful oversight of the Heritage Reformed Congregations, the seminary was established with a singular mission: to prepare godly men to serve as faithful shepherds in Christ’s church. With an emphasis on experiential Reformed theology, robust biblical instruction, and personal piety, the seminary sought not merely to impart knowledge but to form the whole person for ministry.

Classes were first held in modest borrowed spaces, taught by a small but deeply committed faculty. Students often came not for the prestige of a degree, but because they had caught the vision of a theological education that united head and heart. It was a start marked by simplicity, devotion, and faith.

Over the next thirty years, Puritan Reformed grew, not by the strength of human strategy, but by the Lord’s providential leading. Today, with hundreds of graduates serving around the world, we look back with gratitude for these small beginnings, and forward with faith for what God will yet do through this seminary committed to His glory and His truth.

Small Classes, Lasting Impact

Those first years were marked by quiet perseverance. With no campus of their own, students and professors gathered wherever space could be found—sometimes in living rooms, sometimes in borrowed church classrooms. What bound them together was not polished facilities or well-funded programs, but a shared conviction that God’s truth must be taught with clarity and lived with sincerity. The atmosphere was familial, with professors and students often praying side by side, discussing theology over meals, and sharing the burdens of ministry. These small, sometimes hidden beginnings carried within them the seeds of a vision that would eventually take root across the globe. Even in those modest settings, the Lord was shaping lives for His service and laying the foundation for a seminary that would endure.

Though the facilities were simple, the experience of those early years was profound. Students recall gathering in close quarters, sometimes squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder, with every lecture marked by both intellectual challenge and spiritual encouragement. Professors knew each student by name, and their teaching was woven together with prayer, mentoring, and genuine pastoral care. Friendships formed in those years

often grew into lifelong bonds in ministry. Looking back, it was not the size of the classrooms or the resources on hand that made the difference, but the presence of Christ in the midst of His people. These memories remain a cherished testimony to the seminary’s foundation: truth taught with warmth, in dependence on the Lord.

2003-2004

By 2003, it was clear that the seminary had outgrown the ranch house. With more students enrolling each year and the vision expanding beyond what the small rooms could hold, the Lord opened the way for a permanent home. Construction began on a new building that would serve both as a place of study and as a hub for global outreach. Faculty, students, and supporters prayed and labored together as the walls rose and classrooms took shape. In 2004, the completed seminary building stood as a visible testimony of God’s provision and the generosity of His people. More than brick and mortar, it represented a commitment to training future generations of pastors and leaders who would proclaim Christ to the nations.

A STUDY ROOTED IN WORD

When the new seminary building was completed in 2004, Dr. Joel Beeke’s office quickly became one of its most recognized spaces. Lined with thousands of Puritan and Reformed volumes, the room reflects both his personal calling and the seminary’s mission: to unite academic rigor with pastoral devotion. Every book on the shelves tells a story, of men and women who loved the Scriptures deeply and sought to live faithfully before God.

From this office, countless sermons, lectures, and books have been prepared, many of which have carried the seminary’s influence around the globe. Students and colleagues alike recall the door always being open for prayer, counsel, or encouragement. More than just a study, it has been a workshop of ideas and a place of spiritual formation, where biblical truth is not only researched but also applied to life and ministry.

“Those years in my study were filled with a deep sense of dependence on the Lord. We had few resources, but we had the Word of God, the

"...the Lord began building something far bigger than we ever imagined."

fellowship of students hungry to learn, and the conviction that truth must shape both head and heart. Out of that small room, the Lord began building something far bigger than we ever imagined.”

— Dr. Joel R. Beeke

Though these words look back to the seminary’s earliest years, they still ring true within the walls of his present study. What once began in a modest ranch house has grown into a global ministry, yet the heart remains unchanged: God’s Word at the center, guiding every step of the seminary’s life and work.

Who We Are

ROOTED IN THE REFORMED TRADITION AND GUIDED BY SCRIPTURE, PURITAN REFORMED THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY EXISTS TO GLORIFY GOD THROUGH THE TRAINING OF MEN FOR FAITHFUL MINISTRY AND THE EDIFICATION OF THE CHURCH. WE ARE A COMMUNITY OF SCHOLARS, PASTORS, AND STUDENTS UNITED BY A COMMON COMMITMENT TO THE SUFFICIENCY OF GOD’S WORD AND THE BEAUTY OF HIS GRACE. FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE MISSION FIELD, OUR PURPOSE REMAINS STEADFAST; TO EQUIP SERVANTS OF CHRIST WHO WILL PROCLAIM HIS TRUTH WITH HUMILITY, CLARITY, AND CONVICTION THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

Founded upon a vision for rigorous scholarship and heartfelt piety, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary seeks to cultivate a ministry that joins sound doctrine with sincere devotion. Our identity is defined not by

size or status, but by faithfulness—faithfulness to the Word of God, to the confessional heritage of the Reformed faith, and to the church of Jesus Christ in every generation.

Within these walls, students are formed not only by what they learn but by the example of those who teach them. Professors and staff labor together as shepherds and mentors, shaping hearts as well as minds. In every classroom discussion, every chapel message, and every quiet moment of study, the call remains the same: to know God and to make Him known.

"When I first sensed a call to ministry, my brother—who is a minister back in Brazil—strongly encouraged me to come to PRTS because of all that the Lord was doing through this school. At that time, I did not know much about PRTS. Now I do. He was right—God is doing great things here. PRTS combines academic excellence with a zeal for God and His church. During my MDiv studies, I experienced both sound teaching and genuine spiritual growth. As I now pursue my ThM, that continues to be true.

At PRTS, I have felt that my professors care not only for my grades (they do that!) but also for my soul. They are both teachers and brothers in Christ. The staff’s diligence and cheerful service make it easier for students like me to focus on our studies. There is a real sense of unity here, all directed toward one purpose—to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ.

My family has also grown in many ways. The strong Christian community at PRTS provides mutual encouragement and care. It has been a blessing for our children to grow up among other families shaped by the gospel. This community has had a tremendous impact on our spiritual growth and my preparation for ministry—it feels like an additional experiential course. I am very thankful for the opportunity to study here."

Named for the influential Puritan theologian, the library serves as both a study haven for students on campus and a global resource for scholars of Reformed theology. Its extensive collection of print volumes, rare works, and digital archives provides access to centuries of theological reflection.

Through its online catalog and growing suite of electronic databases, the library connects researchers around the world to the riches of the Reformed tradition, supporting study, ministry, and the faithful proclamation of God’s truth across generations and continents.

“THE TASK OF THEOLOGY IS NOT TO CREATE NEW TRUTHS BUT TO CLARIFY THE FAITH ONCE DELIVERED TO THE SAINTS." DR. RICHARD A. MULLER

Few theologians have shaped the intellectual culture of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary as profoundly as Dr. Richard A. Muller, one of PRTS’s Scholar in Residence. His long friendship with the seminary is woven through its very history—stretching from his early years as professor at Calvin Theological Seminary to his continued mentoring presence at PRTS today.

Before the seminary ever bore its current name or size, Dr. Muller’s teaching had already laid foundations in the lives of several men who would one day become its own professors. Among them are Dr. Joel Beeke, Dr. Stephen Myers, and Dr. Adriaan Neele, all of whom studied under him during their formative years of doctoral or post-graduate study. That early intellectual and spiritual influence, grounded in Reformed scholasticism and shaped by Muller’s exacting historical theology, helped to form a generation of Reformed pastors and scholars who now carry that legacy forward through the teaching halls of PRTS.

Since becoming Scholar in Residence, Dr. Muller has continued to enrich the seminary’s mission—not only through his ongoing research and publications but also through his regular engagement with students and faculty. His seminars are known for their depth, clarity, and precision. Yet beyond the classroom, his humility and quiet humor have made him a deeply respected colleague and friend.

Muller’s decades of work in post-Reformation Reformed dogmatics, particularly through his monumental Post-Reformation Reformed Dogmatics series, have redefined how the Reformed world understands its theological heritage. His scholarship bridges past and present—reminding every new student of theology that faith seeks understanding, and that historical theology is vital for the health of the church today.

What We Do

PURITAN REFORMED THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

EXISTS TO GLORIFY GOD BY EQUIPPING MEN AND WOMEN WORLDWIDE FOR FAITHFUL MINISTRY

THROUGH THE STUDY AND APPLICATION OF HIS WORD. OUR MISSION IS TO PREPARE SERVANTS WHO ARE DEEPLY ROOTED IN SCRIPTURE, SHAPED BY REFORMED CONVICTION, AND COMMITTED TO PROCLAIMING CHRIST TO THE NATIONS.

Our seminary trains students for a lifetime of service to Christ and His church by uniting academic excellence with heartfelt piety. Through rigorous theological study, pastoral mentorship, and practical ministry experience, we seek to form shepherds who embody humility, courage, and devotion to the truth of God’s Word.

From our Grand Rapids campus to classrooms, churches, and learning centers around the world, PRTS

partners with institutions and ministries to expand access to sound Reformed theological education. Together, we labor to strengthen the global church, encourage gospel-centered leadership, and extend the reach of biblical truth into every culture and language.

Grounded in the historic confessions of the Reformed faith, yet reaching forward with a global vision, we remain steadfast in our calling: to prepare a new generation of pastors and leaders who will preach Christ, build up His church, and bear witness to His kingdom across the nations.

The Global Summit at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary gathered more than two dozen international partners representing seminaries, training centers, and ministries across over twenty countries. The event served as a milestone in the seminary’s thirty-year history, highlighting how global partnerships have become central to its mission.

Over several days, delegates engaged in shared worship, strategic planning, and theological reflection; celebrating the fruit of collaboration in advancing confessional Reformed education worldwide. The Summit fostered deeper unity among like-minded institutions, strengthened new and existing academic pathways, and renewed a collective vision: to equip pastors and church leaders to proclaim Christ faithfully in every nation.

Through this partnership, the reach of Reformed theology continues to grow in Mozambique, strengthening the church and extending the light of Christ throughout the region. Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, global partnerships extend the seminary’s mission beyond its own walls. These relationships unite faithful institutions around a shared vision, to advance biblical and confessional Reformed education across cultures. Through collaboration in teaching, publishing, and training, PRTS helps equip pastors where the gospel is taking root and growing. Each partnership is a testimony to the church’s unity in Christ and to the power of truth that transcends borders.

Rooted Locally, Reaching Globally

SEMINARIO REFORMADO PURITANO — LATIN AMERICA PARTNER

“Serving alongside PRTS has deepened our commitment to confessional Reformed training within our own country. Through shared curriculum, mentorship, and prayer, our students are being shaped for ministry with a global vision and a local heart. What began as a small academic exchange has become a growing fellowship rooted in the same gospel convictions. We thank God for this partnership and the encouragement it brings to pastors and churches across our region.”

The impact of these partnerships reaches far beyond classrooms. Together with seminaries and ministry leaders, PRTS supports theological education that serves local congregations on every continent. Graduates and professors labor side by side to translate resources, establish new programs, and disciple future shepherds. Through shared vision and prayer, these partnerships embody the seminary’s calling, to strengthen Christ’s church around the world for generations to come.

The Fruit of Shared Mission

PRTS’s global engagement continues to expand through new initiatives, learning centers, and translation projects. By working collaboratively across languages and cultures, these partnerships multiply the reach of faithful theological training, enabling pastors and students worldwide to access robust Reformed teaching. The fruit of these relationships is seen in churches planted, leaders equipped, and lives transformed by the Word of God. Together, we serve one mission: that Christ would be known and His church built up in every nation.

Even as new doors open, the foundation remains the same: Scripture, sound doctrine, and shared labor for the glory of Christ. Through humility and partnership, PRTS continues to walk alongside the global church, learning, teaching, and proclaiming the timeless truths of the Reformation to the ends of the earth.

Martin Bucer Seminary Brazil, located in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, partners with PRTS to offer advanced theological training through both Master of Arts and ThM programs. Established in 2022, this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to promoting confessional Reformed theology throughout the Portuguese-speaking world. Under the leadership of Jeferson Alvarenga and Felipe Boechat Asseruy Silva, MBS serves pastors, students, and church leaders across Brazil, equipping them with rigorous academic instruction and pastoral formation rooted in Scripture. Together, MBS and PRTS work to strengthen the church in South America through faithful teaching that exalts Christ and transforms lives.

Faces of Faith

Faith

A PORTRAIT OF GOD’S GLOBAL WORK

Across continents and cultures, God is raising up men and women who embody faith in Christ and a commitment to His Word. These faces tell stories of calling, perseverance, and hope—each one a reflection of how the gospel unites and transforms lives.

At Puritan Reformed, we see a global fellowship of believers shaped by Scripture and strengthened through training for ministry. Behind every face is a story of how the Lord builds His church: in classrooms and pulpits, in villages and cities, through the quiet faithfulness of those who serve.

We see faith that endures. We see the image of Christ formed in His people. We see the fruit of His faithfulness—one face at a time.

THE FUTURE IS FAITHFUL — ROOTED IN TRUTH, REACHING THE WORLD.

As Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary moves into its next chapter, we do so with deep gratitude for the Lord’s providence over the past three decades and with steadfast confidence in His promises for the years to come. Our calling remains what it has always been: to prepare men and women to proclaim the unchanging gospel of Jesus Christ in a changing world. Yet the avenues by which this mission unfolds are expanding in remarkable ways.

The seminary’s future is marked by both conviction and compassion—a vision that unites rigorous scholarship with pastoral devotion, academic excellence with spiritual maturity, and global accessibility with theological depth. Through expanding online programs, new learning centers, and partnerships with like-minded institutions around the world, we are witnessing how faithful theology can cross boundaries, strengthen churches, and transform lives.

We look ahead to a generation equipped to stand firm on the authority of Scripture and to serve with humility and courage wherever God calls them. The task before us is great, but our confidence is not in our plans or our strength; it rests in the Lord who builds His church and sustains

FUTURE OF PRTS

As we look to the future of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, we are filled with hope. God has graciously sustained this institution for three decades, and the same sovereign hand that established PRTS continues to guide us.

Our calling remains clear: to prepare faithful servants of Christ for gospel ministry in every place the Lord sends them. We are expanding our reach through new learning models, global partnerships, and the training of pastors in their own cultural contexts—all while preserving the rigorous, Reformed, and pastoral character that has marked this seminary from the beginning.

To our students and alumni, we reaffirm our commitment to walk beside you in your lifelong service to the church. To our friends and donors, we express heartfelt gratitude for your partnership in this work. Your support is an investment in the spread of the gospel and the strengthening of Christ’s bride worldwide.

With confidence in God’s promises, we step forward together; entrusting the future of PRTS to Him who has been faithful in every generation.
