Happy and Glorious!

A weekend of celebrations to mark HM the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

T

he gloom of a return to the political situation was rendered all the more stark by the bright glory of the preceding Jubilee celebrations. Britain at its best and Northampton too! The events I attended varied considerably in type but were united by happiness and patriotism. Although the Saints match I attended in the middle of Saturday was not directly a Jubilee event, it featured red, white and blue fireworks, and indeed spectacular rugby fireworks on the pitch! What a match and what a wholesome and positive atmosphere to go with it. The informal was exemplified by Weston Favell’s Jubilee Celebrations. Street stalls, royal themed quizzes, scrapbooks and floral displays in St Peter’s and fun activities on the Patch too. Both the Mayor Cllr Dennis Meredith and I attended at about the same time. The arrival of the rain was purely coincidental!

An enjoyable afternoon was spent on Saturday watching the Saints win Andrew Lewer MP with Parliamentary colleagues Dame Andrea Leadsom MP, Rt Hon Michael Ellis MP and Tom Pursglove MP

Andrew and Debbie Cadd, Manager of the Billing Road Conservative Club, at the Club’s Jubilee Party

The Billing Road Conservative Club Jubilee Party was an equally relaxed affair. It featured a memorable rock band rendition of the National Anthem (shades of Jimi Hendrix’s Star Spangled Banner, but thankfully the lead player did not then squirt petrol over his guitar and set fire to it, which may have spoiled the Jubilee mood somewhat). I was honoured to be asked to give a short speech about Her Majesty and to propose the Loyal Toast. Far more formal, but rightly and fittingly so, was the Northamptonshire Jubilee Pageant in the Market Square, hosted by the Lord Lieutenant James Saunders Watson. This was attended by too many dignitaries from across the county to mention them all, but included my Parliamentary colleagues Dame Andrea Leadsom MP, Rt Hon Michael Ellis MP and Tom Pursglove MP. The parade of military and civic groups, the large and supportive public attendance and, best of all, the pride and pleasure taken in the Pageant by the young people participating was tremendous. It made for an ideal way for all of us to thank the Queen for her incredible and long life of service to us all. We wish her further years to reign over us... and to enjoy her marmalade sandwiches.
