Workplace Wellness Matters

In The Loop this month, we focus on wellness in the workplace. Some businesses already have initiatives in place for their employees and themselves, while others may be considering this approach for the first time this year.

Workplace wellness is not just a trend; it is crucial to ensure the well-being of employees. Although workplace wellness has been around in various forms for quite some time, it continues to evolve as our world changes.

Healthy employees translate to fewer sick days, reduced stress, and a

more positive and productive work environment. Promoting wellness in the workplace goes beyond preventing illness; it encompasses physical activity, even as little as 10 minutes a day, which can significantly impact health. Consider turning catch-up sessions with employees into walks around the block or holding meetings outside when the weather permits.

“When we take care of our well-being— both physically and mentally—we show up better for our teams, our businesses, and ourselves.”

Mental health is equally important, so regular check-ins with staff, even brief one-on-one walks, can greatly benefit both them and you. As business

Events & Promotions Coordinator Chenay Douglas chenay@pukekohe.org.nz

owners, it is essential to monitor our mental health and stress levels. Building a support network with neighbouring businesses can also be beneficial.

Work-life balance is another critical element. Supporting this balance for both staff and ourselves is key. For those in the service industry, something as simple as setting work phones to silent after hours and dedicating that time to family can promote a healthier balance.

Start by understanding what your team needs. Set clear goals, plan activities, and make sure everyone knows what’s going on. Don’t forget to keep checking in to see what’s working and what’s not.

When you focus on wellness, you get a more productive, happier team. People stay longer, work harder, and generally just feel better about coming to work.

News From The PBA

Exciting things are happening in Pukekohe! From vibrant artwork to strengthened spaces and a delicious dining experience, check out what’s new around town.

SHAWNA ATTENDS A PUKEKOHE TOWN HALL WORKSHOP

Last month, I attended a workshop with Auckland Council, Eke Panuku, the Franklin Local Board, and other community leaders to receive an update on the Pukekohe Town Hall’s roof replacement, earthquake strengthening work, and its future use in connection with Franklin: The Centre.

We explored key questions such as: Who is the space currently serving? How does the facility need to evolve to better meet the needs of our community? What types of activities and groups could use the space in the future?

When you think of the Town Hall, what comes to mind? Attending an event, a market, or perhaps a concert? It’s important that this space remains accessible to all members of our community as a central hub.

A strong connection between the town hall and Franklin: The Centre will be crucial to its success. Currently, the courtyard between the two buildings is damp, underutilised, and lacks purpose. The goal is to create a cohesive and functional link between these spaces, ensuring they serve the community effectively.

Soon, Auckland Council will be seeking community feedback to help shape the future of this space. Keep an eye on our Loop magazine and weekly updates so you don’t miss your chance to share your thoughts!

CRESSEY WAY MURAL

Have you seen the new mural on Cressey Way? This stunning piece, created by @Johnny4Higher, is a celebration of Pukekohe’s rich cultural diversity. The bold, vibrant colours are inspired by those commonly used in Indian culture. It’s a striking addition to the area, bringing life to the once blank alleyway. Next time you’re nearby, check it out!

Get ready for a culinary adventure in Pukekohe! Movable Feast is a unique progressive dining experience, taking you on a delicious journey through town with three courses at mystery restaurants. Community Safety Update

Recently, we have been closely monitoring an individual causing concern across multiple businesses in Pukekohe. Thanks to proactive reporting from local business owners and staff, we were able to track their movements and build a strong case, leading to their apprehension. If your business has experienced any suspicious activity involving this individual that hasn’t yet been reported, we strongly encourage you to call 105 and provide any relevant details. Every report strengthens the case and increases the likelihood of a conviction. Your vigilance plays a crucial role in keeping our community safe—your eyes and ears make all the difference!

Addressing Homelessness in Pukekohe

Alongside the Pukekohe Business Association and Auckland Council Compliance Wardens, we have been working on a proactive approach to support the increasing number of homeless individuals in our area. Through collaboration with their case managers, we are identifying those frequently present in town and ensuring they receive the appropriate assistance. It’s also important to note that some of these individuals are not homeless, but choose to spend time in the town centre.

If you have concerns about their behaviour in public spaces, please report incidents via 105.govt.nz or share updates within the WhatsApp group chat. Providing details such as locations, identifying descriptions, or photos (where appropriate) helps us track their movements, intervene when necessary, and connect them with essential services.

BUSINESS FEATURE

Beyond Skin Deep With Meena’s Beauty & Laser

In the heart of Pukekohe, Meena’s Beauty and Laser has been helping people look and feel their best for 20 years. What started in Meena’s garage when she was just 23, has grown into a trusted local business.

This July marks two decades in business, a milestone that speaks to Meena’s dedication and the strong relationships she has built along the way.

Some of those relationships have come full circle—the daughters of her original clients are now walking through the doors, continuing the trust that began a generation ago. It’s

a testament to the way Meena (right) and salon manager Christy (left), run the salon. Their love for beauty goes beyond appearances; it’s about making people feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.

Meena credits her creative streak to her parents, particularly her father, who was deeply involved in fashion and clothing design. That same artistic passion has shaped the way she approaches her work, blending technical skill with a personal touch.

Meena and Christy understand that clients may feel hesitant

about permanent treatments, so they always take the time to talk things through. They offer thorough consultations, answering any questions and ensuring every procedure is

“It’s a common misconception that men don’t get beauty treatments. Many do, from wrinkle treatments and body waxing to laser for long-term facial hair care!”

the right fit. Whether it’s laser treatments, permanent make-up or more traditional services like facials and waxing, they make sure clients feel fully informed and comfortable before moving forward. For larger treatments, they provide patch tests and prep advice, making sure everything is tailored to each individual’s needs.

It’s this personal approach that keeps people coming back. Many clients say they don’t just visit for the treatments—they come for the conversation, the warmth, and the chance to take a break from their busy lives. The salon isn’t just a business; it’s a place where people can unwind, relax, and feel at home.

Always looking for ways to grow, Meena has recently introduced tattoo removal services, with WINZ quotes available to make the process more accessible. Their permanent tattooing services extend beyond make-up, offering areola reconstruction for breast cancer survivors who want to restore their confidence again.

Meena and Christy also believe in the power of community and have partnered with local Pukekohe businesses like Infinity Supplements, Net Point, Beyond The Edge Barbers and Anytime Fitness to offer exclusive discounts to members, as well as mirroring this for their own clients! Their generosity extends to Gold Card holders, who receive 10% off their treatments as part of their commitment to giving back.

As they celebrate 20 years in business, Meena and Christy remain as passionate as ever. They prove that true beauty isn’t just about the surface—it’s about feeling good inside and out.

Interview with Meena Sahota

Owner of Meena’s Beauty and Laser Pukekohe

WHAT ACCREDITATION ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

We recently celebrated our 10th year as a member of the New Zealand Association of Registered Beauty Professionals.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK?

Either staying at home with the kids, or outside exercising.

WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION YOU HEAR IN THE INDUSTRY?

Many clients think that beauty treatments give instant, permanent results without any maintenance! Whether it’s laser treatments, permanent makeup or more traditional services like facials and waxing, the best results come with proper aftercare and consistency.

WHERE IS THE BEST SPOT TO UNWIND AFTER A BUSY DAY?

Little Ed, Franklins, Johnny’s Steakhouse & Columbus Coffee just behind us on Ed Street.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE RECIEVED IN YOUR CAREER?

Quality over quantity always— especially for our clients. We take the time to ensure the best results, never rushing to fit in more bookings.

Three Ways A Mentor Can Help You & Your Business Succeed

With a mentor’s help, you could reach more customers, work more efficiently, and grow faster in the digital world.

1. Nail your pricing strategy

Money matters in business. A good pricing strategy should consider your costs, customers, and competition. Understanding these three elements lets you consider which pricing model fits best.

A mentor can guide you to:

• make better financial decisions

• find funding when needed

• keep your business running smoothly even when times get tough.

• Although there’s no onesize-fits-all strategy for pricing, it’s worth taking time to get it right for your business.

2. Transform your digital use

Technology is reshaping the business landscape rapidly. The pace of technological change can be intimidating, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

That’s where a mentor can help. They can be your external sounding board, bringing an objective perspective on the technology and its potential impact on your business.

A mentor can highlight new ways you can use technology to your advantage, including suggesting setting up online shops, advertising online, and streamlining your operations, leading to reduced costs and increased productivity.

They’ll be there to walk alongside you – in the real world – whatever the future brings.

3. Network and collaborate

Success in business isn’t just about what you know—it’s

also about who you know. Connections can open doors to new opportunities, fresh ideas, and valuable partnerships. But building a strong network takes time and strategy.

With a mentor’s support, you can:

• Meet key players in your industry, including other business owners, experts, and potential collaborators.

• Gain insider knowledge and learn from the experiences of seasoned professionals.

• Share ideas and advice within a trusted community, gaining support along the way.

By leveraging your mentor’s network, you’ll expand your reach and position your business for growth. Whether you’re looking for partnerships, mentorship, or simply a space to exchange ideas, collaboration is key to long-term success.

Te Puutahi o Pukekohekohe (Pukekohe Town Square) is being upgraded to future-proof this public space for Pukekohe’s growing community.

Through enhancing the existing town square and creating new public space along Roulston Street, the aim of this project is to create a safe and connected town centre with more flexibility for events and markets. Overall, being better suited for community requirements.

This project is part of the Pukekohe Masterplan that was consulted on with the community in 2022. Through that consultation process we heard that the heritage and character of Pukekohe is important to locals, as well as a town centre that is safe and easy to get around.

Franklin Family Support Becomes Mai Lighthouse

Over the last 15 months, Franklin Family Support has undergone a rebranding process to strengthen our name, logo and brand image.

The organisation has existed for over 40 years to support the Franklin community, growing from a base of just a few volunteers to a team of over 60. Due to the rapid growth in our local population, the board felt the time was right to undertake a comprehensive rebrand which would help position us for the next 40 years. Our work now stretches further than the Franklin boundaries and this future proofing project considered how the additional tens of thousands of residents across Drury and North Waikato could access and utilise our services.

The initial part of our rebrand took 6 months and involved the agency we chose, ‘Re:Brand,’ undertaking a series of workshops with our staff, as well as in depth stakeholder interviews with our funders, community members and clients to better understand what our new branding needed to include. Following the research phase, we went

through three rounds of potential new names with over 30 different options before we landed on ‘Mai Lighthouse’.

The creative team at Re:Brand then designed our new logo. The shapes reflect the glass windows in the Manukau Heads Lighthouse and the traditional pātiki patterns symbolise the unity and woven nature of our services. Mai Lighthouse will continue to provide Social Work, Counselling, Financial Mentoring, JP clinics, free lawyer clinics as well as our Volunteer Driver service helping to take people from across our area up to hospital appointments.

Our sincerest thanks to Re:Brand for their wealth of knowledge and patience working with us, to Pukekohe Toyota for ensuring our vehicles are safe on the road, and to our incredible local signwriters, SignMax, who have worked so efficiently to prepare our new merchandise, building, and vehicle signage. Your expertise, dedication, and attention to detail have made a significant impact, and we truly appreciate your support in bringing our vision to life.

The Closing Of A Chapter, But Not The End Of The Story...

The Counties IHC Opportunity Shop opened it’s doors in Pukekohe in 1981 and, over the last 44 years, has offered great deals to raise funds for people with intellectual disabilities living in our community.

On Sunday 9th February 2025 the shop closed its doors for the final time but the story does not end there.

Not wanting to see the shop simply closed, IHC New Zealand approached local organisation, Bloom Pukekohe. Bloom Pukekohe is a charitable trust that provides a fun and inclusive environment for adults with intellectual disabilities to take

part in horticultural and craft activities. Started in 2015 with just 6 participants, Bloom now has 86 participants, ranging in age from 17 to 77 years old, attending each week.

IHC and Bloom have worked together over several years, sharing the vision and focus to support individuals with intellectual disabilities to grow, learn and lead satisfying lives in the community. It is with this shared focus that they are transitioning the shop to the oversight and management of Bloom Pukekohe. The shop is now open at 33 Edinburgh Street, Pukekohe. Check out their social media @

bloompukekoheopshop to stay in the loop.

Bloom management are excited by the opportunity and the potential for growth of their programmes and for their participants. They would like to acknowledge the support of the local community, volunteers, businesses and IHC New Zealand for their commitment to making this next chapter a successful one.
