GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

SLIPPERY PAVER’S TRIALSO FAR SO GOOD!

It’s no secret that the ceramic tiles in Pukekohe’s town centre (and many others across the country) become a serious hazard during the wetter months. The PBA has been actively advocating for a cost-effective solution that minimises disruption to businesses while addressing this ongoing issue for more than 5 years.

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

I’m not sure about you, but this last month has certainly felt like a rollercoaster. We’ve had some great highs, but it also feels like there has been a tightening of the belt across the board.

While spending has been down across Auckland, a recent spending trend report shows that where there has been spare money, we have been spending it locally.

In 2023, we surveyed our members and Facebook followers to understand the impact of this problem on businesses and the wider community. With over 240 respondents within just a few weeks, the results were alarming.

Over 82% of respondents reported slipping in the town centre, with 37% suffering injuries. Most concerningly, 50% of people said they actively avoid Pukekohe’s CBD when it’s raining due to the risk of slipping.

After years of research and negotiations with Auckland Transport, we received approval to install specialty pavement grit at five test locations on King Street. Each site has been treated using a slightly different method, grit quantity, and adhesive, allowing us to try five potential solutions over the next six months.

Social Media Masterclass

We are excited to share the success of our recent Social Media Masterclass, aimed at growing business knowledge. This event, led by the talented Merritt, provided invaluable insights and strategies for leveraging social media to enhance business presence and engagement. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Merritt for his expertise and to all participants who contributed to the informative sessions.

“If you didn’t complete the member survey, I strongly encourage you to have your say at the next one”

We’ll continue to monitor them closely as we head into winter and will report back to the FLB, AT, and our members on the trial results and next steps.

If you or someone you know has had a slip or fall due to the slippery pavers around town, please make sure to report. As the saying goes, “The squeaky wheel gets the oil”—the more incidents we report, the more likely Auckland Transport is to take action.

You can lodge a complaint by calling Auckland Transport on 09 366 6400 or by using their online form, contact.at.govt.nz. Simply select Footpaths > Let us know > Pedestrian facilities to submit your report.

SEMINARS GALORE!

Last month, we hosted a series of three social media masterclasses aimed at empowering business owners with the tools and confidence to manage their social media efficiently (more info on page 12). A huge thank you to Merritt from Pik n Mix Lollies for dedicating his time each week to lead these sessions.

We’d love to hear your thoughts—did you find the workshops valuable, and are there other seminars you’d like to see? Up next is AI & Chat GPT with RAZOR Pukekohe in May.

CONSTABLE KEV MOVING TO PATUMAHOE

Most of you will know Constable Keven Greasley, who has been part of the Community Engagement team at the Police.

With a recent reshuffle withing the Pukekohe communities team, Kev will now predominantly be focusing on the Patumahoe/Clarks Beach area, and Constable Brittany Lenne will be stepping into his role. Be sure to check out her introduction on page 16.

A big thank you to Keven for all his hard work for our business community over the past few years!

PUKEKOHE TRAIN STATION ACTIVATION

Near the end of last month, we carried out a train station activation to welcome commuters back to Pukekohe.

Starting from the early peak hours of the morning, Edwin and Jordan of The Shapecutterz performed an acoustic set while we handed out lolly bags promoting Pukekohe. We then hopped on the train and headed to Britomart to continue the performance and raise awareness that Pukekohe is now open for business.

Keep an eye out for the video content we captured, coming soon as part of a campaign to shop in Pukekohe!

Shifting the Conversation with Sin City Pukekohe

Robin and Shannon Shinn are shaking things up with Sin City, our town’s first premium adult toy and pleasure products store.

Opening their doors on 1 March last year, they set out to create more than just a shop—it’s also a space where people can explore, ask questions, and feel completely at ease. Too often, conversations around intimacy are awkward or avoided altogether, but they believe it’s time for that to change. Stocked with a carefully chosen selection of toys, lingerie, lubricants, and essentials, the store caters to

everyone, whether they’re firsttimers or well-versed in the world of intimacy products.

Beyond the shopfront, their online store keeps things discreet and accessible, with fast shipping across New Zealand. Unlike their bigname competitors, Robin and Shannon keep things personal. They take the time to understand their customers, guiding them towards products that suit their individual needs. They’re fostering confidence, encouraging exploration, and helping people embrace their

sexuality, free from shame. They’ve created a welcoming, judgment-free space where curiosity is encouraged, and all questions are welcome.

It’s not just about what’s on the shelves, though. The duo has worked hard to make sure Sin City offers something bigger— real conversations, open discussions, and a shift in the way people think about sexual wellness.

Education also plays a huge role in what they do. They know that the more people understand about their own bodies and desires, the more comfortable they’ll feel in making choices that enhance their well-being. They’ve made it a priority to provide resources, expert advice, and a safe space where people can have open, honest conversations. Even parents looking for guidance on how to talk to their teenagers about safe sex will find support at Sin City.

“It starts with parents gaining the confidence to have open, honest conversations with their children, empowering them to make informed choices about their bodies and relationships.”

They also run Pleasure Parties, relaxed and informative gatherings that break the ice and help people learn in a fun, social setting.

At the core of it all is a simple belief: pleasure is natural, and no one should feel embarrassed about it. Robin and Shannon are proving that shopping for intimacy products can be modern, fun, and completely normal. Their welcoming space allows people to feel comfortable and informed, helping to shift the conversation around intimacy and making it a natural and accepted part of life.

Interview with Robin & Shannon Shinn

Owners of Sin City Pukekohe

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OPERATING SIN CITY?

Sin City has been proudly operating since March 1, 2024, providing premium adult toys and wellness products.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY?

Adult toy stores are more than people think! We love breaking stigmas, promoting pleasure, and helping customers explore with confidence.

WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTION YOU HEAR IN THE ADULT INDUSTRY?

That adult stores are seedy! In reality, we focus on quality, education, and enhancing intimacy for everyone.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED IN YOUR CAREER?

Break the stigma, embrace confidence! Pleasure is natural, and everyone deserves to explore it without shame or hesitation.

WHERE WOULD YOU RECCOMEND FOR DATE NIGHT IN PUKEKOHE?

We love dining at The Longkeeper. After dinner, a leisurely stroll through the town center adds a lovely touch to the night.

Window Staging with Kevens Curtains

Christine and the ladies at Kevens Curtains invited us to style their front window with autumnal fabrics for the change of season.

As soon as we arrived, we got straight to it! The ladies had done the hard yards for us, laying out beautiful complementary fabrics and drapes to inspire us. The plan was to start from the back and work forward: curtains first, then accent drapes, lighting, a comfy chair, plants, pillows, and decorations. With so many samples and décor accessories in the showroom, there was plenty of inspiration to draw from. And the result – a dreamy little reading nook that made us want to curl up with a book and pretend we had the afternoon off.

It was hard work though – the sun beaming through the window turned the whole thing into a sauna, especially for those of us up the ladder (thanks, Chenay!). But despite the heat, it was a blast learning how different colours, patterns, and textures came together to create a stunning space.

Once Chenay and Shawna were happy with the design, Brooke stepped in to do the finishing touches - fluffing pillows along with plant and décor placement (the most important job of course).

When it came time for the big roller-blind reveal, the Kevens Curtains crew gave us the thumbs up and told us we smashed it.

Kevens Curtains isn’t just about making shop windows look fabulous – they offer high-quality indoor and outdoor solutions, including zip tracks, awnings, screens, and of course, curtains and blinds. Plus, they do free measures and quotes, so you don’t have to play the guessing game.

Home automation is also becoming very popular – and they do that too! Or perhaps you want your headboard to match your curtains? No worries—they also specialise in upholstery! They work with big names like Navigation Homes, A1 Homes, and Precision Homes, but they also love helping everyday locals bring their vision to life.

Kevens Curtains will be at the Franklin Home & Lifestyle Show this month, so if you’re keen to check them out, they would love to see you! Or, pop into their showroom at 22 Queen Street, Pukekohe for a chat, a browse, and maybe even some styling inspiration!

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

Social Media Masterclass

Last month, the PBA ran a series of workshops helping our members understand the importance of social media marketing for their business. We were fortunate enough to enlist the help of Pik n Mix Managing Director, Merritt Watson to help guide us through topics like algorithms, content creation and ad spend.

Merritt shared his tried and true pointers, tips and tricks of social media marketing, and left us all with a much better understanding of just how simple it is to engage with customers and attract new ones!

If your business could benefit from clearer direction, content ideas, or a tailored strategy to strengthen your social media presence, Merritt offers consultancy services designed to help you get started—or get better.

“Why

is social media important for my business?”

Now, more than ever, businesses need to utilise social media to bolster and boost their marketing presence. The tide has turned away from big budget TV adverts and now the power is held by small businesses.

Having a social media presence builds brand awareness, a community, a networking channel. By having an active social media presence, you cut the barriers between yourself and your customers or potential customers.

Best of all, social media is free. If you crack a content creation style that resonates with others, you’ll continue to generate a steady supply of new customers who will either interact with you, or refer you to others who are in need of your products/services and it shouldn’t cost you a cent!

“Whether you’re stuck for content, unsure of what platforms to focus on, or simply want guidance on how to connect with your audience in an authentic and engaging way, I’m here to help.

Let’s work together to turn your social media into one of your most valuable business assets.”

“What do you recommend I start with?”

If you’re new to social media, start with Facebook and Instagram—both have the most engaged users in New Zealand. Instead of just selling, think like a content creator. Engaging content leads to sales. Begin by sharing images that reflect your personality and business. People want to connect with the person behind the brand. There are plenty of plumbers in town—why should someone choose you?

With shrinking attention spans, video content is essential. Short, engaging videos can showcase your services or share real-life examples. Instead of hard-selling, focus on solving problems in an entertaining way.

For example a Plumbers, content post could include: “Turn your harsh Pukekohe tap water into pristine, spring-like drinking water for just $499 installed!”Short, Sharp and straight to the point

“I

don’t know what type of content to make?”

You just need to start. Looking back, our own content wasn’t that flash but provided a starting point to develop further.

Once you start, the ideas will flow. Consider what is going on in your business this week. What are you currently handling for clients? What makes people come and seek your products/ services? An Insurance broker could say something like “$60,000 paid out in 24 hours because this client had the right level of health insurance in place from the beginning”

When in doubt, call for help. Is there someone in your business or personal life that consumes content regularly? Do they watch videos often and are they familiar with the current style of social media? Get them to guide you on what people are wanting to see and what is creating engagement. What is making people stop scrolling and watch?

Introducing Britney

Your friendly Community Constable updating you on what’s been happening around town.

Our Community team is undergoing a few changes at present, with a new roster and new additions to the team.

We would like to introduce you to our new Community Constable, Britney Lenne, who has taken over from Kev, who is now taking care of Patumahoe and Clarks Beach. We’ll let Britney take it from here:

The new changes will affect our presence around town during the day, as we are now working 3 early shifts and 3 late shifts, followed by 4 days off. This schedule will help us focus more on evening thefts, burglaries, and supporting our

frontline staff during rush hours.

I’ll do my best to be out and about during my early shifts—whether that’s walking along the main street or stopping by to introduce myself.

If you find yourself in a high-risk situation or have concerns for your safety, please call 111. For incidents with delayed reporting, please call 105, and I’ll endeavour to follow up.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to report every incident, as they all help build a case against offenders. While WhatsApp is a great tool, it’s not a formal channel for reporting crime.

I also encourage you to ensure you have CCTV cameras in your store, as they assist us with prosecuting offenders if necessary. Please

register your cameras with communitycam.co.nz.

Feel free to chat with us about store layout, lighting, and extra security measures. The PBA Security subsidy can help contribute to costs incurred for this. I look forward to seeing you all around!
