Maniram Dewan Remembered Robert Bruce noticed that the local tribesmen were brewing something prepared from leaves of bushes available in the Singphow areas in undivided province of Assam. He planned to examine it scientifically but could not. His brother Charles has very close tie with an Assamese aristocrat Maniram Dutta Barooah, close aid of Swargadeo Purnananda Singha. Maniram gave him some leaves from Assam which were sent to Botanical Garden of Calcutta for chemical analysis. It was identified there as Camellia sinesis of different version of Chinese Tea. Maniram brought the plant to the notice of Robert during his visit in Rongpur in 1823. The freedom fighter is one of the great souls of Assam who is the first Indian Tea Planter.
