Shavathon at Liberty Midlands Mall also reported good attendances. “Support has been great so far,” said volunteers at the stall. “I’ll do anything to support those living with cancer,” said Shakun Lallbehary, the first to have her head shaved at Liberty Midlands Mall.

There was less activity at Scottsville Mall, known for its vibrant student life. “It started slowly. No one wanted to shave their heads. It’s mostly the kids who want to have their hair sprayed different colours. But people did donate in the tins provided,” said the Shavathon team in Scottsville.

behind and supporting your family.” Various schools in the city took part and had numerous team mates to tag in if they were in need of a break from the 12 hour relay. “The majority of the school is taking part. We have ten different teams,” said one of the Wykeham Collegiate pupils. Another school with more than 50 runners participating was Voortrekker High School. According to pupils, more team members would be joining them after taking part in other sporting matches. “We are excited to be doing this,” said Vories runners. There were also many groups who had come to support the event for the first time. Barry Strydom, from the Metro Meth-

odist Church said that this was the church’s first showing at the annual fundraiser. “We wanted to identify with the community,” he said. Also available, was a risk assessment stall educating people about different types of cancer, ways to detect them and the treatment options available. CANSA’s regional manager Lisa Strydrom said the rain that marked the event was a lot like cancer. “We have our own plans and sometimes things don’t always turn out the way we expect them to,” she said. However, the success of the event showed that the CANSA team and members of the public were not deterred by the weather.
