Angry patients queue outside Northdale Hospital in the blistering heat Public Eye reporters communications breakdown had hundreds of patients waiting under a tin roof carport in the blistering heat outside Northdale Hospital on Wednesday while construction workers upgraded the hospital’s reception area. The upset and angry patients contacted the Public Eye after they had been waiting for more than five hours in the 35°c sun. “I am pregnant and in pain and haven’t eaten since I arrived at 6 this morning. We were told to just wait here for our files but no one has got back to us yet,’ said Maxime Hammond of Eastwood. According to patients, they were given ticket numbers and asked to sit outside until they were called. Some patients arrived at the hospital as early as 4 am and had still not been attended to by 10 am. Adding to the confusion, it is understood, files were mislaid. “There is no system in this hospital. My wife is an epileptic patient but has been left out here in the sun and someone from the hospital has notified us that they cannot find her file,” said an upset Claridge resident, Dee Roberts. Northdale Hospital CEO Felicity Du Preez told Public Eye that the reason patients were left to sit outside was because of construction happening inside the hospital. “We are trying our best to improve the conditions in the hos-
pital by constructing a new information desk and creating a new filing system. We cannot have patients waiting inside because of the construction work that we are doing. It’s for their own safety,” she said. In the meantime the hospital is making arrangements for a marquee to be erected in the hospital grounds by Friday for waiting patients. Construction in the hospital should be complete by the end of February, she said. Du Preez said that signs about the construction had been placed outside the hospital to notify patients and visitors, however the frustrated patients said they had not even noticed the sign and no one from the hospital informed them on arrival. “We asked questions as to why we are sitting here but no one could answer us. If there is construction, then why can’t we sit in the corridors? Shouldn’t babies and extreme cases be allowed to sit inside because this heat is terrible for us ill people? This is inhumane,” said another patient,
Prabha Ramsaru. One patient said that they are ‘forced to sit like sardines in the sun’. Hospital PRO, Mandisa Dlamini said that patients could raise their grievances with her directly. “They are welcome to forward their complaints to me. We have a suggestion box and we encourage patients to tell us about their concerns,” she said.

‘My only wish is that every marriage is like ours’ Opposites attract- 60 years on
fter a brief meeting in 1952 at a family function, Satheaseelan (Pat) and Chellamma (Daisy) Thambu knew what love at first sight felt like. What they didn’t know, was that their love story that started at their young ages of 22 and 18, will still be going strong 60 years later. This Valentines Day, the two celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Pat, born and bred in Durban, began visiting Pietermaritzburg every weekend after he met Daisy. “She lived with her family and she was very spoilt by her older sisters and grandmother. When I came into the picture, her granny gave me a real hard time, but I managed to win them over with my charm and good looks,” laughed Pat. Laughing along, Daisy agreed that Pat was known for his good looks and charm. “He caught my eye with his dressing. He was always so well-
dressed and smart. He even used to iron his own clothes because he was so particular is the way his suit needed to be,” she said. After a year of courting, Pat moved permanently to Pietermaritzburg and began planning their wedding which took place in 1954. “We had a really big wedding. 600 guests were invited to our wedding at the Clarewood Tamil School Hall,” Daisy remembered. The duo, magical together and envied by many for their easygoing and friendly relationship, had their first child Jaya in 1955. The two are now blessed with four children, Jaya, Selvum, Kenny and Rogany and their partners, Kanagie, Debbie, Niree and Shubs. They also have 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Today, much like when they first met, the couple enjoys listening to music and ballroom dance together. However, as much as they are alike, they are very different. “I love to go out with my
friends. I love socialising and entertaining. Daisy, on the other hand, is very reserved and loves to garden. She prefers to stay at home but she never stops me from going out,” said Pat. Q:Advice for young lovers? A: “A person must always be understanding and compassionate to the other person. There must be no jealousy in the relationship and always trust your partner. We never argued because we both will make our points and just keep quiet afterward and walk away. We never hold grudges,” the couple agreed. Q:One thing you love about each other? A: Pat- “She is the most loveliest and understanding person and wife.” Daisy-“I love that he is not an angry person.” Pat gave Daisy a pair of gold bangles to celebrate their 60 years of love. “My only wish is that every marriage is like ours,” said Pat.

emporarily suspended prominent local attorney, Sundeep Singh told Public Eye, on Wednesday this week, that he ‘was doing everything he could to clear his name’. The KwaZulu Natal Law Society obtained a High Court interdict temporarily suspending Singh over allegations of theft of R876 000 paid out by the Road Acci-
dent Fund (RAF) into Singh’s trust account on behalf of a client, Radha Govender in July 2009. Singh thanked Public Eye for the opportunity to state his side of the story but said that he was unable to comment further for fear of jeopardizing the case. The case resumes on March 31.

sport Local scholar gets colours for angling N
orthbury Secondary School learner, Ashandren Pillay (16), was
awarded his U19 national colours at the South African Freshwater Bank Angling Championships in the Free State in December. He was a member of the provincial U19 squad selected to represent KwaZulu Natal in the championships held at Bloemfontein Dam. He won a gold medal for the heaviest carp weighing 5.44 kg and helped secure the bronze medal for the KwaZulu Natal team which placed third in the face of stiff competition from the seven other provincial teams. His father, Pietermaritzburg murder and robbery unit detec-
tive, Swami Pillay, is also a keen angler. The father and son duo both achieved provincial colours in 2012, the first Indian anglers to do so in the masters and junior divisions, and represented KwaZulu Natal at the national championships that year and again last year. “Last December the competition in the U19 section was very tough, with 89 anglers from eight provinces taking part. But my son came through with flying colours as the only Indian in his age group,” said Pillay senior.
Bafana’s problem is with management not coach
ed up, fed up, fed up ... big time! Sometimes I feel fed up every day when I start thinking about the state of soccer in our country. Many years ago, although I did not want to accept it, I discovered that many South Africans, espe-
Public Eye February 14, 2014 - Page 20
cially the new generation, had lost interest in South African soccer. In fact the majority of them no longer watch or follow it. Can you blame them? Nowadays our children normally follow the English League and other leagues around the world with passion. The reason is clear. Besides the low standard mostly displayed by a number of teams in our PSL, unprofessionalism is displayed by club bosses and league administrators which just kills the interest of following it. Almost every season or month organisations like PSL or SAFA make decisions that leave us confused or just make the game a big joke. These days many of you are aware of the PSL coaches getting fired left, right and centre. I guess the story that has caught the attention of everybody is the future of our senior national coach Gor-
Jerry Barnes don Igesund. Apparently, the South Africa’s football troika – SAFA’s president Danny Jordaan, Irvin Khoza and Kaizer Motaung – will be part of the group to decide Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund’s fate this week. Igesund has been asked to present his report on Bafana’s shambolic African Nations Championship campaign to SAFA’s international affairs committee. Igesund will also be put under the microscope by SAFA’s technical committee. Last week Jordaan outlined the organisation’s vision after a threeday meeting in Cape Town. A decision on Igesund must be made. Personally, I don’t care what happens to Igesund, but I am damn worried about the future of the game and the way things are unprofessionally done. Sacking the poor coach won’t change the standard of our game, but will reveal other short-comings. The problem is in the management.
