Social networks abuzz over tragedy accident

S

ocial networks were abuzz with messages of condolences with shocked friends and family expressing their grief after the tragic news. The boys who were good friends, were well known soccer players. An internet facebook group page has been created in memory of the four young Northdale men who lost their lives in the horrific crash on Wednesday night last week. The facebook page, ‘R.I.P Yesigan, Dino, Shikar and Miks’, already has more than 60 members. “I sure hope there is a soccer

field up there for you, Shikar,” read one of the statuses on Facebook. “So today you guys begin your journey to heaven, we lost four amazing friends/brothers as God gained four amazing angels... I pray that you guys souls rest in peace and reach salvation soon and your families find strength to handle this great loss... RIP guys... memories shall definitely live on!” wrote Darshna Aaliyah Singh Maharaj. A local support group for grieving families also expressed their sympathies to the boys’ families.

“On behalf of all members of Cycle to Reality support group for grieving families our sincere condolences to all families who have lost their loved ones. We humbly offer support to all grieving families once a month at our meetings. Let the spirit of our loved ones live forever,” said convener of the group, Sylvie Williams. Cycle to Reality’s next meeting will be held this Saturday, 19 October at 35 Allandale Drive at 4pm. Contact Sylvie Williams on 083 561 8936 or 033 3979888 willy.aquarius@yahoo.com

Losing a loved one is so painful

D

eath is so sudden, so quick, so unexpected, and so painful. It also comes with shock and disbelief especially if it is by accident, murder or suicide. Lately we have lost so many young children, schol-

ars and students, as if it is a generational curse. God has blessed me with three beautiful daughters and my only son who was my baby, committed suicide in matric at the age of 17. It has been three and a half

years, but it seems as if it had happened yesterday. We sat at his bedside for 48 hours and watched the doctors try to save him, but it was too late. My son Sashin was such a lovely, kind, funny and an extremely caring person who was loved by everyone. The day he died, a part of me died as well. For a whole year, I could not go past his school, look at his clothes or even go to the mall where we always had so much of fun. The recent death of the four young men last week also devastated me as one of the boys was in the same class as my youngest daughter. Their tragic death will remain in our hearts. I would like to let their parents know that I really felt their pain as well and may God give each of you the strength and courage to go on. I truly understand your pain and loss. If any need to talk to one who has also suffered such grievous loss they can call me after 4pm 033-391 4349. Love to all who know the pain of losing a loved one. Kate Nundlal

Distraught parents visit scene Kailene Pillay

We just want to remember Dino for the fun and friendly person he was

T

he parents of Dinodren Pillay visited the scene of the accident this week to see for themselves where their son and his three friends were killed in last week’s horror crash in Alan Paton Drive, “It was bad. We don’t even want to imagine how he died, we just want to remember Dino for the fun and friendly person he was,” said Pillay’s youngest sister, Nicole. Dino’s parents, Ragu and Vernie, asked Public Eye to convey their thanks to all those who have provided emotional supClockwise from top left: port as they come to terms Mickayle Roberts, Yesigan with their loss. “We are very grateful. was a good son … we still can’t believe it,” said Ragu Pillay. The news of the tragic death of the four close friends, all in their 20s, has shocked the community of Northdale. The accident took place around midnight last Wednesday on Alan Paton Drive (formerly Durban Road) near the Shell garage in Scottsville. According ER24 paramedics who were on scene, the four, Shikar Singh (26), Yesigan Govender (22), Dinodren Pillay (22) and Mickayle Roberts (23), were travelling in an Audi cabriolet when their car collided

with a municipal refuse removal truck. The truck swerved off the road and crashed into the wall of a nearby block of flats. The car overturned and rolled repeatedly for some 50 metres, colliding with a bus stop down the road before coming to a rest.

Tribute to my brother My brother will be missed by all our family members and friends. He was my hero, my everything. Life without you, my brother, will not be the same. I miss those moments that I spent with you, I miss everything. If I had one wish, I would walk up to heaven and bring you back. I will always love you my brother, from the bottom of my heart. Love, your little sister Nicole (This tribute is also from Lerusha, Trishen, Asif and baby Saif).

Preparing for her child’s death

A

fter being diagnosed with lupus six months ago, the once normal, bubbly and outgoing Joelene Naidoo (21) is now brain dead, blind and deaf. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. This results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart, and lungs. “She was diagnosed with lupus in April this year and within six months she was on her deathbed,” said a distressed Vanitha Naidoo, Joelene’s mother. Vanitha Naidoo had to stop work to look after her daughter and the family is now destitute. Local group, South African Minority Rights Equality Movement (SAMREM), has stepped in to assist the family. “We have purchased medication, food and a much needed suction machine for Joelene,” said Pradeep Kesari of SAMREM. The family sat with Public Eye and SAMREM this week as the

SAMREM has already enlisted the help of Imbali Funeral Services and other community organisations to assist the family. “How do you prepare for your child to die? I’m not prepared and don’t think I will ever be,” sobbed Vanitha. Joelene’s four siblings and Vanitha are currently receiving counselling to help them through this diffi-

cult time. SAMREM is planning to set up a trust fund to help the destitute family. “This family has nothing. If the community can help with food, clothes, cash or kind, we will appreciate it,” pleaded Kesari. If you wish to assist the family please contact Pradeep on 078 288 5479 or Lutchman on 084 680 2235.

Local orchid man wins prestigious award

L

ocal orchid specialist grower, Vincent Ambrose of Mount View, won the ‘Best Orchid on Show’ award at this year’s Sunday Tribune Garden Show. Ambrose is a member of the Pietermaritzburg Orchid Society and grows a wide variety of orchids from his Swallow Road home in Mount View. His passion for orchids began seven years ago when he was given an orchid as a gift. “The person who gave me the cattleya orchid told me that it was a special orchid that if taken care off, would flower once a year. I managed to get it to flower twice a year,” said Ambrose. Ambrose said he enjoys researching the different

types of orchids and that is how he learns to grow and take care of them. He is especially keen to teach and help the local community to develop orchid growing skills. “I want to start teaching youngsters and anyone who is interested in gardening the ways and techniques used to maintain your plants,” he said. Ambrose has won an award every year at numerous garden shows but this year was the highlight when he walked away with the prestigious ‘Best Orchid on Show’ prize. He was also awarded ‘Best ansellia’. For those interested in learning about orchid growing from Ambrose he can be contacted on 033 397 0815.

Sports Veterans Association awards function

T

he Sports Veterans Association (SVA) endeavours to bestow honour and recognition to all those sporting personalities who have made a significant contribution to the welfare of sport in various communities. Its obligation is to inspire its sporting legends, preserve peace and harmony and lead the organization to success and accomplishment. As such awards will be presented to the most deserving individuals at the 2nd Awards Presentation Function due to take place on Saturday, 22 March 2014 at the Truro Hall. Preparation for the function is well on track. Each awardee has been informed of his or her nomination by way of letter and should by now have confirmed their acceptance. Entrance to the function will be through a personal invitation to each awardee and his or her partner. The SVA relies on donations and sponsorships to cover all costs. The SVA believe that it is only fitting to celebrate the occasion of the awards function with the publication of a second commemorative brochure. This will include a brief synopsis of each awardee from the various codes of sport. The publication of this brochure allows all the awardees to celebrate the proud history of sports people, showcase their achievements and to have a souvenir of a milestone in the history of sport in the community. It is envisaged that this brochure, just as the first issue, will become a collector’s item. As a consequence, the executive member of the SVA, Kannipan ‘Sailor’ Chetty, has been entrusted with the responsibility of facilitating and coordinating the compilation and publication of the
