Picture Book Three Hens and a Peacock

Written by Lester L. Laminack Illustrated by Henry Cole HC: $15.95 / 978-1-56145-564-5 1-56145-564-4 / 9-1/2 x 11 32 pages / Media: watercolor, ink, colored pencil / Ages 4–8 March / Rights: World F&P LESTER L. LAMINACK is a specialist in children’s literacy and professor emeritus at Western Carolina University. Laminack has written numerous books and articles for educators and is a familiar speaker at professional meetings and reading associations nationwide. He lives in North Carolina.

www.lesterlaminack.com HENRY COLE is the illustrator of more than forty books for children, including bestsellers such as THE LEPRECHAUN’S GOLD, LITTLE BO, AND TANGO MAKES THREE, and OINK!, in addition to many of his own books, such as A N EST FOR CELESTE and JACK’S GARDEN. He lives in Florida.

www.henrycole.net

Laminack and Cole’s hilarious book reveals what happens when some foolish farm animals decide to trade roles—and discover just how hard it is to do someone else’s job. The Tuckers’ farm is a peaceful place: cows chew their cud, hens lay their eggs, and the old hound rests on the porch. Everyone has a job and no one complains. That is, until a hapless peacock suddenly falls off the back of a passing truck and stirs things up. Soon, customers are flocking to the farm to see what all the fuss is about, and business is booming. But the hens don’t like the newcomer getting attention while they stay cooped up doing all the hard work. The wise old hound sees the problem and helps his feathered friends orchestrate a job swap. What follows is the hilarious tale of three hens who get in way over their feathered heads, and one very distressed peacock who just can’t figure out how to lay an egg. Popular author Lester L. Laminack has created a comical look at what happens when we underestimate the value of others’ work. Henry Cole’s delightful illustrations heighten the story’s humor and will have readers of all ages laughing out loud.

When Roxie heads off to Camp K-9 for a fun-filled summer, she’s terrified that the poodle bully may discover her secret. But maybe some of the other dogs have secrets too... Roxie is excited to be going away to camp, but scared that the other dogs will find out the secret she’s hiding: she’s brought her blankie along in her Pooch Pouch. If the other campers find out, they’ll call her a scaredy-cat. Even worse, a mean bully named Lucy seems determined to cause trouble—and if Lucy sniffs out her secret, Roxie will really be in the doghouse. KATHRYN O. GALBRAITH is the author of numerous children’s picture books and novels, including LAURA CHARLOTTE, TRAVELING BABIES, and BOO BUNNY! She lives in Washington.

www. kathrynogalbraith.com WENDY ANDERSON HALPERIN is the illustrator of over twentyfive books, including THANK YOU, GOD, FOR EVERYTHING and TURN! TURN! TURN! She also created the award-winning project “Drawing Children into Reading.” She lives in Michigan.

Eloquent text and stunning illustrations combine to explore the many ways seeds are distributed. A farmer and her son carefully plant seeds in their garden. In the wild garden, many seeds are planted too, but not by farmers’ hands. Different kinds of animals transport all sorts of seeds, often without knowing it. Sometimes rain washes seeds away to a new and unexpected location. And sometimes something extraordinary occurs, as when the pods of Scotch broom burst open explosively in the summer heat, scattering seeds everywhere like popcorn. Kathryn Galbraith’s lyrical prose seamlessly combines with Wendy Halperin’s elegant, crisp illustrations to show that many elements—some unexpected—work together through the seasons to create and sustain the wild meadow garden.

A Place for Fish Written by Melissa Stewart Illustrated by Higgins Bond HC: $16.95 978-1-56145-562-1 1-56145-562-8 / 10-3/8 x 9-3/8 32 pages / Media: acrylic Ages 6–10 / Nature / March Rights: World F&P

MELISSA STEWART has written more than one hundred books for elementary, middle school, and high school readers, including many award-winning titles. She lives in Massachusetts.

www. melissa-stewart.com HIGGINS BOND has illustrated numerous children’s books, including H EY, DADDY! ANIMAL FATHERS AND THEIR BABIES, PLEASE DON’T WAKE THE ANIMALS: A BOOK ABOUT S LEEP, and WHO HAS A BELLY BUTTON? (all page 40). She lives in Tennessee.

www.higginsbond.com

This fact-filled, colorful look at the amazing world of fish includes a call to action to protect these beautiful creatures. In this simple introduction to fish and ecology, Melissa Stewart shares with young readers the behavior and beauty of fish and describes specific ways people can help protect them and their natural habitats. Children learn basic facts about fish, including where they live, what they eat, and how they benefit plants and other animals. Sidebars throughout the book contain information on human action that has harmed fish and on the many ways people can protect threatened fish populations, such as by preserving reefs and other marine habitats and by restricting overfishing in sensitive areas. Pointers on how youngsters can help fish in their own community are also included. Stewart offers children a glimpse into the interconnectedness of our world and shows how the actions of one species can inadvertently harm another. Bond’s colorful, realistically detailed watercolor illustrations highlight the diversity of fishes and their habitats—from the Lahontan cutthroat trout in Nevada’s lakes to the spotted trunkfish native to Florida’s coral reefs.

The indomitable Little Rabbit is back in a heartwarming story about starting school and discovering the challenges of independence. Today is Little Rabbit’s first day of school and he has decided to bring along his favorite toy, Charlie Horse. “Now we are big,” Little Rabbit tells his mother. The busy classroom is crowded with little rabbits and lots of activities. His new teacher seems very happy to see him and Charlie Horse—that is, until Charlie Horse disrupts story time, dances on top of the desk during music time, and jumps into the cake batter at snack time. Is Charlie Horse really ready for school? This begins her quest to find items to trade among her farm friends, all to obtain a walking stick to swap for Scarecrow’s hat. But why does Chicken want an old straw hat? Witty poems and elegant artwork let us know what’s on the menu for some unusual undersea creatures. The ocean covers two-thirds of our planet. It is Earth’s largest ecosystem, full of organisms that make a living in wildly different and even extreme environments. This clever collection of poems for kids describes the devious and sometimes surprising methods ocean denizens use to forage for food, capture prey, trick predators, and protect their young. The poems bobble and swim effortlessly from page to page, leading us from the snailshell home of the jeweled anemone crab to a raft of violet snails hanging upside down in their bubble houses. AT THE SEA FLOOR CAFÉ includes science notes with details about each animal’s behavior, a glossary, and an appendix explaining the types of poems that appear on each spread. Striking linoleum prints round out this title, which can be used across the curriculum.

What happens when a girl, homeschooled by her counterculture mother, decides to spend her senior year in public school? First friendship, first love— and first encounters with the complexities of authority and responsibility. Evie is different. Not just her upbringing—though that’s certainly been unusual—but also her mindset. She’s smart, independent, confident, opinionated, and ready to take on a new challenge: The Institution of School. It doesn’t take this homeschooled kid long to discover that high school is a whole new world, and not in the way she expected. It’s also a social minefield, and Evie finds herself confronting new problems at every turn, failing to follow or even understand the rules, and proposing solutions that aren’t welcome or accepted. Not one to sit idly by, Evie sets out to make changes. Big changes. The movement she starts takes off, but before she realizes what’s happening, her plan spirals out of control, forcing her to come to terms with a world she is only just beginning to comprehend. JJ Johnson’s powerful debut novel will enthrall readers as it challenges assumptions about friendship, rules, boundaries, and power.

Also by Sneed B. Collard III:

As wildfires threaten his home, his stepfather’s livelihood, and the raptors he has come to love, Luther struggles to resolve the conflicts within himself and in his community. The town of Heartwood, Montana, is burning out of control. Stoked by the very real flames from nearby wildfires, long-standing, smoldering disputes over forestry policies have been reignited, pitting out-of-work local residents against environmentalists and state wildlife managers. Against the backdrop of Montana’s worst wildfire season in years, Luther begins questioning many of the community’s basic precepts, and in doing so faces alienation not only from his friends, but also from his own family.

Against his family’s wishes, a sixteen year old joins the Confederate Navy and learns that honor can be a smokescreen for arrogance and pride. “Killgore’s first novel for young adults is well-told and firmly in the tradition of a war story in which the protagonist joins a cause and returns broken and embittered, wondering how anyone believed in the glories of battle and patriotic rhetoric.” —Kirkus Reviews

THIS GIRL IS

DIFFERENT “Stranded, hurt, but I can handle it. No freak-outs. No worries. This girl is different.”

A homeschooled, counterculture teen shakes up her world by spending her senior year in public school. Evie is exposed to the many ways people—even those we don’t expect—exploit their authority. See pages 28–29.
