Juanita Sanchez Afterschool Program Winter/Spring 2012

Hello Juanita Sanchez Students! This session, Winter/Spring, of SOAR (Student Opportunities Afterschool Resources) for the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex, is the very first to go ONLINE....thanks to Mr. Bellisle! That's right! No more paper registrations. Carefully look at every single page so you don't miss anything. Talk to your friends about it. Show your parents and see what they think. There's something for everyone! Registration is open to any student from JSEC. All classes are FREE! This session runs from March 12th to May 31st. This afterschool program is funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant and Title 1 from the Providence Public School Department. Seven of the classes offered have Community Service Hours attached to them. Every student has community service hours as a graduation requirement. The afterschool office is next to the principal's suite in the east wing. Always check out the area around it since new classes and opportunities are often offered and posted there. Also drop in and give us suggestions and ideas. R To register click the REGISTER RE EG GIISST TE ER R button and complete the form! But check out everything in the brochure before you do that. Don't miss out! The sooner the better...some classes have limited space.

TURNING A SPACE INTO A PLACE Instructors: Mr. Gormley and Steve Weldon Mondays 4:00 - 6:00 JSEC is undergoing a lot of changes this year! We're working on another project to improve our world even more, but we need your help. Take this class and we'll figure out the best way to use the land on the west side of the building. Should it be a garden? An outdoor classroom? An open space to meditate? All of the above? Come help us decide and then create a space that everyone can enjoy. Maybe we can even install the peace pole, we just created, there. We'll need you to be construction managers, grant writers, web designers, landscape designers, agriculture specialists and many more roles! This is a collaborative effort that will have a positive impact on JSEC and all its future students. (COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THIS COURSE.) R RE EG GIISST TE ER R

MISSION GREEN Instructors: Ms. Hellewell, Jesus Holguin Mondays 4:00 - 5:30 Mission Green returns with an expanded purpose and a JSEC graduate as a co-instructor. This year we will be partnering with ACE (Alliance for Climate Education) to establish paper and plastic recycling at JSEC. We'll also work on ways to reduce our electricity consumption at school and at home. We will also continue last year's mission of creating beauty from trash, also known as 'upcycling'. Upcycling means repurposing/recycling something(s) into a new item that's value is GREATER than it was before. Examples include turning disposable plastic bags into reusable shopping bags or notebook cases, or turning a few moth-eaten cashmere sweaters into a great scarf. In extreme cases it means turning disposable plastic bags and soda can tabs into a prom dress! FUN! We will approach this with an international focus, gaining our inspiration from "Garbage City" in Cairo, Egypt (senior topic, anyone?). We'll focus on conservation, recycling, upcycling or any combination, wherever your interests lie. Join us and help make the world a cleaner, more beautiful place, starting with JSEC! (COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THIS COURSE.) R RE EG GIISST TE ER R

This class will set you on the course of being a guitar virtuoso. Looking forward to weeks of guitar jamming! R RE EG GIISST TE ER R
