COMMUNITY BAG PROGRAM 2

About the Giant Food Community Bag Program

The Community Bag Program gives back to local communities served by Giant Food, providing shoppers a way to give back with every reusable bag sold. Every time a shopper purchases a $2.50 Community Bag, Giant Food donates $1 to the local nonprofit selected by store leadership to benefit for the month. This low/no-touch program for stores has donated close to $400,000, provided over 490,000 meals, facilitated the reduction of 11,898,600 single use bags, and supported 1,470 nonprofits local to the Giant Food community since program inception in July 2019.

2022 Program Highlights

New Bag Design Arrives

The first round of bags arrived on April 11th, showcasing a new design. Stores were sent two cases each to replenish their inventory. April through May saw an increase in sales. These high numbers caused a sell through of the initial order and the bags went out of stock again, dropping sales during the end of Q2.

Proactive Outreach Prompts Sales Increase

When the second round of new bags arrived in warehouses in mid-July, the PSIM team actively monitored sales and reached out to stores with zero or below average sales to ensure full stock at all locations. During August, an increase in sales occurred as stores slowly restocked their inventory.

By September and October, sales were steady in the 9,000 range. Q4 saw a sales increase in November and December, ending the year with monthly sales totaling the highest since OOS issues first appeared.

New Program Website

A new program website was created to coincide with the second delivery, launching in July. This website was completely redesigned with new tools and resources for nonprofits to promote their selection in the program and includes Impact Stories from organizations that benefit from the program. These stories offer a glimpse into the impact that the Community Bag Program has and where donations are making a difference in the local Giant Food Community.

2022 Overview

High sales kicked off the year with January as the highest selling month of 2022. Sales hit a sharp decline in February and March due to bags becoming OOS. Communication was halted to nonprofit organizations during this time as delays in global distribution and shipments occurred, and arrival of bags were continuously postponed. These delays caused a decrease in sales through the end of Q1.

Throughout the year, the team reached out to stores and selected nonprofits, offering any assistance during benefiting months, and maintained a database that was continually updated and optimized to ensure active and engaged nonprofit organizations.

2023 Forecast

2023 is expected to start with Q1 sales in the 10,000 range, with a slight increase moving into April and May. Sales are projected to drop at the end of Q2, experiencing a year low in June and July. Q3 is forecasted to bring Community Bags back into steady numbers, with the year projected to end with an increase during November and December due in part to the seasonal holidays.

The following is excerpted from the Impact Story “Learn. Educate. Grow.” interview with Maria-Fernanda Borja, President & CEO of the Latino Student Fund.

These funds will help us expand our programs and reach more students and families in need. Thanks to the Giant Community Bag Program, we were able to accept more students into all of our different programs and cut down our waitlist.

I want to thank Giant Food! The first year we were selected as the beneficiary for the Community Bag Program we did great but the second year we did even better, and we were not expecting that.

We are close to our 30-year anniversary, and we are so happy that we have been able to expand our services. It’s because of people and companies like Giant Food that we’re able to continue supporting more students and helping the community.

What is Earned Media

and what is the PSIM value add?

When a nonprofit is selected to benefit from the Community Bag Program, the PSIM Marketing Team reaches out via email six times before and during the selection month. Each email contains marketing ideas and templates for nonprofits to use to spread news of their selection in the program to their supporters. Templates include sample press releases, social media posts, newsletter language and marketing emails.

Each mention of Giant Food in print and online generates Earned Media for the brand. Below are just a few examples of nonprofits generating Earned Media for the Community Bag Program through outreach to their supporters.

Crystal, Store #2306 Front End Manager Store #2306 sold a total of 4,744 bags.

New design is nice, love the bright new purple color. One big thing we do at my store is we make sure to keep bags stocked in multiple places including one side of a 4 sided rack, at end of registers, and a rack in self check out.

Steve, Store #758 Front End Manager Store #758 sold a total of 2,155 bags.

We make sure to put the Community Bags out there, and make sure they are visible. Our store has a bag ban, and so customers are often buying reusable bags. They are the first ones customers see on the rack when they head over to grab one.

Randy, Store #303 Assistant Front End Manager Store #303 sold a total of 2,105 bags.
