On behalf of the Philippine Embassy and the Filipino Community here in Singapore, I convey my heartfelt congratulations to PsalmiDeo Chorale on this joyous occasion. Not all groups can claim to have the same amount of success and resilience that you have shown throughout the years.
A whole two decades of creating beautiful music is no easy feat. And to be doing such from a place of love and a joy for volunteerism, is indeed admirable. Your music has echoed throughout the hallowed halls that dot the banks of the Singapore River and for your performances, you have received applauses and accolades;, but it is your organization’s impact on lives that you have uplifted and your contribution to the enrichment of Philippine culture and art that will truly stand the test of time.
The lives of those who serve in the Embassy mirror those of the members of PsalmiDeo. We, too, are overseas Filipino workers. But throughout our years of moving from one place to the next as we serve our Kababayans abroad (oftentimes in places where we do not even understand the language), many of us have learned to seek comfort in music. As the famous writer Hans Christian Anderson said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” And in this space, Filipinos are one of the most eloquent speakers.

I first taught “As Long As I Have Music” to PsalmiDeo Chorale back in 2007 as a way to gauge and challenge the young choir’s choral music appreciation and ability. Eudenice Palaruan’s arrangement overlayed the song’s movements with classical lines that further enriched the song while keeping true to its core message. At the song’s reprieve is a simple line baring its heart, “Then a song that I remember...”
We’re here tonight to remember and celebrate what has brought and sustained this wonderful Filipino community in Singapore together – a song that we remember... Reminding us of loved ones far and away; of shared experiences; of our faiths; of our sorrows; our triumphs and joys. Through all these, the constant is our music.
Fifteen years since 2007, my heart is full knowing that PsalmiDeo Chorale has grounded itself in music while continuously challenging its musicality for years to come. I am deeply honoured and beyond grateful to join PsalmiDeo Chorale in celebrating its 20th Anniversary.

Faith in the Lord and the love of music have bound PsalmiDeo together for the past twenty years. Thus, the group’s name - PsalmiDeo - reminds us of our calling to minister to God and His people through our voices. Tonight, we shall celebrate!
Through the wars across the world that rage every so strongly—threatening our long-cultivated peace, as long as we have music, we shall sing. Through the burning forests, rivers running dry, the islands of refuse that float on our seas, and the air which has soured, as long as we have music, we shall sing. Through the economic turmoil that threatens our countries, leaders, and homes, as long as there is music, we shall sing. Through the sicknesses and plagues that have disrupted our lives, taken our loved ones, forced us to change, and—overshadowed our twentieth year celebration, as long as there is music, we shall sing.
What a deep delight to have you celebrate with us twenty years of musicmaking in Singapore. As one group of people smitten by music, food, friendship, and laughter (not necessarily in that order), PsalmiDeo Chorale is a testament of an expatriate people’s tenacity, musicality, faith, and purpose. Yes, you are allowed to throw in the word audacity for good measure.
Members have come and gone. A few fortunate ones have become permanent residents in this art-loving island nation. But our songs remain as the heartbeat of who we are as an ensemble of working professionals who sacrifice a weeknight or two to sing, reset our life bearings, and enjoy music and laugh therapy. Life’s busyness can dry up our wells, and it is gift to know that we are humans who ache for and receive connection, centering, and confirmation from each other.
Thank you all for letting our music into your lives. We can only hope that PsalmiDeo Chorale’s music will continue to bring warmth, love, and light in times of disconnection and uncertainty. As long as we have music and each other, we will join our hearts with yours figuring out what it means to live fully and authentically.

Music, food and laughter. This is the common routine in preparing for this year’s concert season. As we all discovered amazing musical insights and artistic perspectives from our different conductor mentors, Dr Joel, Dr Eudy, Sir Eric and our Kuya Kiko, we also discovered new makan places around our rehearsal venues, the amazing culinary skills of our members during potluck gatherings and the undiscovered special powers of our new and old members. Amongst the many energy-draining (sometimes tense) rehearsals comes the need for high calorie meals ending with dramatic or exaggerated jokes for dessert, char!1. These wonderful, hilarious and uplifting moments gave us an opportunity to celebrate our commonalities and our vast differences. In the many months of preparation, we managed to relook, understand and reframe selected musical works that PsalmiDeo sang across two decades. Some were painful, some were exciting but all of them were definitely inspiring and life-changing.
Tonight we would like to share something that we cannot express through words, our hopes, aspirations, gratitude and joy. Maraming maraming salamat! Thank you very much for sharing this evening with us.

PsalmiDeo Chorale’s 20th Anniversary Concert
PsalmiDeo was formed in 2002 by a group of Singapore-based Filipino professionals with a passion for choral singing.
What started out as a church choir has evolved over the past 20 years into one of the best all-Filipino performing choirs in their second home, tucking in two awards at the 2016 Singapore International Choral Festival (SICF) - Gold in the Mixed Voices (Open) category, and Silver in the Musica Sacra Open category - on their first time joining the prestigious competition, all thanks to the musical direction of highly esteemed Filipino-American choral master Dr Joel Navarro.
Imparting their love of music - a trademark of the Filipino culturethe group held annual concerts from 2010 to 2019.
After a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, PsalmiDeo is back on stage, in time to celebrate the group’s two decades of making beautiful music.
The group’s conductor this year is Danny Imson, Teaching Faculty for Composition and Music Technology at the School of the Arts (SOTA) Singapore, with Dr Navarro and Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) choral director Dr Eudenice Palaruan as advisers.
Juan Enrico “Kiko” Amador Dimalanta was the musical director of the PsalmiDeo Chorale from 2005 to 2012.
During his tenure, he has helmed the choir in its first three self-produced concerts: “Manila, ManiLAH!” in 2010, “Behind the Scenes” in 2011, and the 10th Anniversary concert “Dekada” in 2012.
Other noteworthy performances include “Seasons in Song”, the choir’s first major concert at The Arts House, and three Christmas performances at the Esplanade in 2008, 2009 and 2011. He also briefly returned to conduct PsalmiDeo Chorale, alongside notable Filipino choirs, Vocablends and Filipino Voice Symphony, in their charity fund-raising concert “Haiyan: Songs of Hope” in 2013.
Kiko values the arrangers’ intended delivery. His deep respect for Philippine talent in compositions and arrangements has strongly driven the choir’s mission to promote Philippine music to the Singapore audience and his international experience contributed to broadening the choir’s musical abilities.
His experience in choral music and conducting were gained from participating in various prestigious competitions and concerts both in the Philippines and abroad, singing with several choral groups since he was in secondary school. He was a member of the University of the Philippines’ Singing Ambassadors (UPSA), UP Manila Chorale, and Manila Chamber Singers.
In Singapore, he initially joined Psalmideo Chorale in 2005 as a tenor before taking over the musical director role shortly thereafter. He was also a member of the SYC Ensemble Singers from 2007 to 2009 and Vocal Associates in 2011 to 2012.
Kiko is an IT professional who currently resides in Hong Kong SAR and briefly returns to Singapore as one of the conductors for PsalmiDeo Chorale’s 20th Anniversary concert entitled “As Long As I Have Music”.
PsalmiDeo Chorale’s 20th Anniversary Concert
Eric Robert Santos is the current conductor of the Holy Angel University Chorale. He trained with the world renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, which was previously under the direction of Prof. Mark Anthony A. Carpio.
Having earned a reputation as a veteran in chorale scene, he was invited by his mentor, Dr Eudenice V. Palaruan, to become a member of the first professional choir in the country under Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, The San Miguel Master Chorale, where he was one of the main featured soloists.
His music career took another step forward as he became a guest chorister of the Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus where his vocal prowess manifested as he sang tenor, rather than his usual low bass, for the Opera Chorus of Ludwig Wan Beethoven’s FIDELIO, Jacques Offenbach’s LES CONTES D’HOFFMAN (The Tales of Hoffman) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart” DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE (Magic Flute) in which he played the role of first priest.
He is a member of the Philippine Choral Director’s Association and one of the sought-after adjudicators and clinicians in Central Luzon, Philippines. Lastly, he is the co-founder of the Divine Majesty Male Choir of Holy Rosary Parish in Angeles City, Pampanga and the founder and chair of the Angeles City Choral Festival.
Eudenice Palaruan studied composition under national artist Dr Ramon Santos and choral conducting under Dr Joel Navarro. After finishing his Bachelor’s Degree at the U.P. College of Music, he took another four-year study in Conducting at the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule, Germany. He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts at St Paul University Manila in 2022.
He was the resident composer/arranger and assistant choirmaster of the Philippine Madrigal Singers. He also wrote music for the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club, the San Miguel Master Chorale, and the International Bamboo Organ Festival. With his active involvement in the choralization of Philippine and other Asian indigenous music, he premiered a significant volume of new Asian choral works. In addition, he is often invited to give lectures on non-Western vocal aesthetics.
He taught composition and choral conducting at the University of the Philippines College of Music and the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music, and St. Paul University Manila. He is now an associate professor at the Singapore Bible College School of Church Music and the choral director of the Singapore Symphony Chorus.
Dr Joel Navarro retired as Full Professor of Music at Singapore Bible College in December 2020, but is still retained as an Adjunct Lecturer. He teaches remotely from Manila. He is also an Adjunct Professor at St Paul University of Manila where he teaches online courses in choral conducting to doctoral students from the Philippines, United States, China, Indonesia, and Thailand. Previous to his Singapore post, he was a tenured music professor at Calvin University from 2002-2014. He began his career in education in 1976 as a university lecturer in mathematics at the Ateneo de Manila University, and then as an assistant professor of music in 1985 at the University of the Philippines College of Music.
He has been invited in the United States and Southeast Asia to give lectures and workshops on conducting technique, choral music, choral repertoire, congregational song, and global hymnody. Dr. Navarro obtained his Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting at Michigan State University in 2005.
To his students, he is known as a beloved and lifelong mentor, ardent supporter, and designer of programs which enable his former students to expand their influence as servantleaders, collaborative artists, and interdisciplinary scholars. Passionate about composition, integration of faith and learning, and intersections of indigeneity and modernity, Dr. Navarro continues to write and arrange music for professional, university, community, and church choirs. A few of his choral compositions are published by GIA Publications, Adoro Music Publishing, and Música Manila. Most of his works are self-published.
A recipient of numerous awards in education, conducting, choral competition, songwriting, song arranging, singing, and acting, Dr Navarro was previously known internationally as the former Music Director and Conductor of the Ateneo de Manila University Glee Club which won top prizes in European choral competitions during his tenure from 1979-2001. His book, INSPIRARE: Breathing Life into Our Music, A Manual for Church Choir Conductors in Asia has been warmly received in Southeast Asia as a much-needed resource on choral conducting. He is working on its second edition meant for a wider audience of choral conductors who are interested in conducting and rehearsal technique.
He spends most of his waking mornings taking snapshots of breathtaking sunrises from his 20th floor condo in Pasig City, overlooking the eastern hills of Antipolo, and relishing chocolate scented wafts from a candy factory nearby. He enjoys grandparenthood with Amy, his wife of 42 years, to three lovely granddaughters.

Danny has participated and presented his compositional works in various music festivals and competitions such as the Impuls Festival in Graz, Austria, Donaueschinger Musiktage in Germany, Synthetis International Summer Music Course in Poland and the Cheltenham Music Festival in England. He was awarded the highest prize by the Goethe-Institut at the Young Composers in Southeast Asia Competition and Festival, and the National University of Singapore Student Achievement Awards.
He received his honours degree in music composition from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore. His current research investigates shaping musical experiences with use of stochastic methods and chance operations in both acoustic and electro-acoustic music.
Danny was a former member of the Saint Louis University Glee Club (Philippines) and the Singapore Symphony Chorus. He is currently a teaching faculty for composition and music technology at School of the Arts Singapore and an active member of the Sari-sari Philippine Kulintang Ensemble.
