A message from

H.E. Joseph Del Mar Yap

Philippine Ambassador to Singapore

I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to PsalmiDeo Chorale for their annual concert, as well as for promoting Philippine choral music and Philippine talent in Singapore. Established in 2002, PsalmiDeo is one of the oldest and most prominent Filipino choirs in Singapore, having won numerous choral competitions and performed in prestigious cultural venues in Singapore. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Joel Navarro, conductor of PsalmiDeo Chorale, and its members, for sharing their beautiful music with our kababayans and friends through their Advent concert on 10 November 2019. This season, after all, is all about sharing. We thank you for making our kababayans feel the warmth of the festive season. Let us continue working as one community to accomplish our goals and endeavours. The Philippine Embassy in Singapore and I look forward to establishing an even more productive relationship with the Filipino community in the coming years. Ang inyong likod,

Whispers of Light, Visions of Hope: An Advent Concert

A message from Dr Joel Navarro Dear friends of PsalmiDeo Chorale, Greetings and welcome to our concert, Whispers of Light, Visions of Hope. You could have been someplace else tonight. Instead, you chose to be with us. For that we are deeply grateful. We sense that all of us have arrived in this hall with a sense of relief away from the world outside. There is a prevailing sense of busyness and tizzy in this cosmopolitan city, a pace that makes us feel harried and less human—everyone else is experiencing it so we might as well put up with it. There might be a voice inside of us that begs the question, “Am I really born for all this? Surely, there is something better.” This question must have been at the base of a people’s heart-cry thousands of years ago when they were waiting, painfully and longingly, for someone that would take them away from a life of misery, bondage, and homelessness. To people of a certain faith who commemorate that season of waiting, Advent allows them to deeply appreciate the Messiah they had long expected for hundreds of years. This expectation translates meaningfully in music. The late composer, author, and philosopher, Leonard. B. Meyer, whose influential work on Emotion and Meaning in Music (1956) put forth the thesis that emotion in music can be understood in the light of psychological theory of all emotion: Affect is created when the tendency to respond is inhibited or blocked. As a people who find ways to cope with the tensions of expectation, delayed gratification, and unanswered longing, the themes of Hope, Faith, Joy, and Peace emerge as ready companions in our life journey. Without their faint whispers nor blurry visions, our lives would be doomed to disparagement, discontent, and disrepair. Bengali poet and polymath Rabindranath Tagore’s line suggests that even in the darkest of nights, the song of the bird gives us reason to hope: Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark. We extend our hands to you, fellow life travelers. We offer you our songs of Light and Hope to be your companions as you journey through the night, walk those deep valleys, and stumble through caverns where the silence can yawn greatly in the soul. May our songs light your torches. Sincerely, for the PsalmiDeo Chorale,

Dr. Joel Navarro Conductor 5

HIS LIGHT IN US

Music by Kim Andre Arnesen, Lyrics by Euan Tait

God’s distant call flares in the night, so long expected, so longed for; and all my life, Christ called my name, and now at last, I’ll answer Him. enewed, his hope, R his light in us, incarnate, fragile, our Lord appears, Alleluia, alleluia! Eternal, so perfect, his cry of changeless love.

IS HE WORTHY?

By Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive, arranged by Dan Forrest

Do you feel the world is broken? (We do) Do you feel the shadows deepen? (We do) But do you know that all the dark won’t stop the light from getting through? (We do) Do you wish that you could see it all made new? (We do) Is all creation groaning? (It is) Is a new creation coming? (It is) Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst? (It is) Is it good that we remind ourselves of this? (It is) Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole? Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll? The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave He is David’s root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave Is He worthy? Is He worthy? Of all blessing and honor and glory Is He worthy of this? He is!

8

Does the Father truly love us? (He does) Does the Spirit move among us? (He does) And does Jesus, our Messiah hold forever those He loves? (He does) Does our God intend to dwell again with us? (He does) Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole? Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll? The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave He is David’s root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave From every people and tribe Every nation and tongue He has made us a kingdom and priests to God To reign with the Son Is He worthy? Is He worthy? Of all blessing and honor and glory Is He worthy? Is He worthy? Is He worthy of this? He is!

WHEN YOU BELIEVE

By Stephen Schwartz, arranged by Alejandro Consolacion II

Many nights we’ve prayed With no proof anyone could hear In our hearts a hopeful song We barely understood Now we are not afraid Although we know there’s much to fear We were moving mountains Long before we knew we could

In this time of fear When prayer so often proves in vain Hope seemed like the summer birds Too swiftly flown away Yet now I’m standing here My heart’s so full, I can’t explain Seeking faith and speaking words I never thought I’d say

There can be miracles When you believe Though hope is frail It’s hard to kill Who knows what miracles You can achieve When you believe Somehow you will You will when you believe

Ashira l’adonai; ki gaoj ga-ah (I will sing to the Lord for He has triumphed gloriously) Mi chamocha baelim adonai (Who is like You, oh Lord, among the celestial) Mi kamocha nedar ba kodesh (Who is like You, majestic in holiness) Nachita v’chas-d’cha am zu ga-alta (In Your Love, You lead the people You redeemed) Ashira, ashira, ashira (I will sing, I will sing, I will sing)

LET IT BE

By John Lennon and Paul McCartney, arr. by Ryan Cayabyab

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me Shine until tomorrow, let it be I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be There will be an answer, let it be

And when the broken-hearted people living in the world agree There will be an answer, let it be For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see There will be an answer, let it be Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be Yeah, there will be an answer, let it be

ALLELUIA By Jake Runestad

Lyrics same as title.

MY SOUL DOTH MAGNIFY THE LORD By John Rutter ( from the Book of Common Prayer)

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden For behold, from henceforth, all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is His Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

AWIT NG PAGHAHANGAD

By Fr Charlie Cenzon SJ, arr. Christopher Borela

15

O God, You art my God, I seek You, My soul thirsts for You; My flesh yearns for You, Like a dry and weary land without water; I yearn for the water of your care. I have gazed upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory. I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call on Your Name. On my bed I remember you; and meditate on You in the watches of the night. For You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to you; I am safe in Your Hands. The king shall rejoice in God; And all who have faith shall rejoice.

PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS By Ryan Cayabyab

Il Signore, mi rende uno strumento della Vostra pace (Lord make me an instrument of Your peace) Dove ci e odio lasciarlo seminare l’amore (Where there is hatred, let me sow love) Dove ci e ferita, perdono; (Where there is injury, pardon;) Dove ci e dubbio, fede; (Where is doubt, faith;) Dove ci e disperazione, sperare; (Where there is despair, hope;) Dove ci e nerezza, illuminarsi; (Where there is darkness, light;) Dove ci e la tristezza, gioia. (Where there is sadness, joy.) O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, It is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
