Historically the clubs in the Top 4 league positions have recruited the least number of players within the January transfer window. Again this trend continued in January 2011, with the Top 4 recruiting the least amount of players. When comparing the trends over the last 5 years with regards to the total number of transfers and the source of this recruitment there seems to have been a shift in general to recruit from one of the ‘Big Five’ Leagues in Europe.

Summarising the findings the following data has been sought looking at every transfer into the EPL from the previous 5 seasons (Summer 2006-January 2011) and each respective transfer window.

With the often frenetic activity that coincides with transfer windows, the January 2011 registration period was no different. With the largest amount of British players moving within the window and a new British record transfer fee of £50 million being reached, Prozone can offer a unique insight into player trading activity and the changes in transfer trends over the last 5 years.

Possibly with the increasing rules and importance of ‘home-grown’ players, a further breakdown of the players that moved within the window shows that 91% of the British transferred players were either home-grown or have the potential to become home-grown. In comparison from the ‘other’ transfers made only 11% were homegrown or have the potential to become home-grown, perhaps a sign of clubs becoming more diligent and accountable with regards to the recruitment of new players. JANUARY TRANSFER BREAKDOWN Interestingly this year, there was the largest amount of British players that moved within the window (46% of all transfers) compared to January 2010 (39%), and in Summer 2010, where only 33% of all transfers into Premier League clubs consisted of British players.

With the January transfer window a club’s first opportunity to buy or sell players since the end of August, reactionary transfer spending remains evident with regards to ambitions in improving league position lower down the table. However as with recent seasons, with the spotlight firmly on the development of homegrown players, and with the restraints of the current economic environment, clubs appear to be more selective in their player recruitment. And the number of players recruited during January continues to be significantly lower than 3-4 seasons ago.

Prozone are pleased to announce that New York Red Bulls have signed a new long-term contract with Prozone that will assist the club in all aspects of team and individual performance, enabling them to benefit from the most innovative and insightful performance analysis systems available. The 2010 season brought about a new stadium, a new head coach, and a new group of players to the Red Bulls; and prior to the 2011 season the Red Bulls strengthened further with the hiring of the first full time performance analyst in Major League Soccer and the employment of Prozone performance analysis services. “Prozone is the leader in its field, already working with many top clubs around the world, and we are excited to announce our partnership with them,” said Red Bulls General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “We have put a significant amount of resources in the last few months in enhancing our analysis of our

PROZONE IN QATAR

PROZONE IN RUSSIA In the last 12 months Prozone has agreed long-time partnerships with the three flagship Moscow clubs – Spartak, CSKA and Dynamo Moscow – while the installation of our unique eightcamera system at Spartak’s Luzhniki Stadium also allows the national team access to both PROZONE3 and MATCHVIEWER. With CSKA becoming the first Russian club to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League and the successful bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, 2010 was an iconic year for Russian football and their standing on the international stage has never been higher.

Following Qatar’s successful bid for the 2022 World Cup, the Qatar Stars League Corporation has chosen Prozone to offer full performance analysis services to all clubs in the league as well as the national team and all the country’s elite match officials. Eight stadiums across the country have been fitted with Prozone’s Sony camera systems that through PROZONE3 will provide full physical and technical performance data. An in-depth training programme was also held at the Qatar National Olympic Headquarters in February this year. These sessions saw coaches from all 12 teams in the Qatar Stars League, as well as match officials and representatives from the Qatar Football Association Technical Committee and the Qatar Stars League, receive full technical and physical analysis training from Prozone’s Business Development Manager Martin Bland. He had this to say about the training sessions and the development of the game in Qatar:

The advancement and promotion of performance analysis in Russia is a key part of our global development plan and our partnerships in Russia show that the Russian league and the Russian FA have a long-term commitment to compete at the very highest levels of the European game. Spartak, CSKA and Dynamo Moscow are amongst the most successful clubs in the 19-year history of the Russian Premier League and have shared 12 championships and innumerable European campaigns between them. We hope that our involvement will help our Russian clubs achieve further and greater success in the coming seasons. According to Spartak Moscow’s Technical Director, Roman Ashabadze, “Our decision to work with Prozone is down to the accuracy and scope of the data, the interactivity of the product and the efficiency of the service. With the help of PROZONE3 analysis our coaching staff are able to analyse every action of every player. These insights are then used to provide technical and tactical information to our players.”

“The level of attendance [at these training sessions] is indicative of the desire to develop the game in Qatar, and we look forward to continuing to help our partners get the maximum benefit from Prozone. The development and improvement in performance in Qatari football is part of a long term vision, and Prozone are delighted to be working with the QSL and QFA in realising this vision.” Training and investment is part of the long-term development of Qatari football and shows a real hunger for success at all levels of the game. As does the appointment of former Real Madrid Director, Professor Valter Di Salvo as the QFA’s Director of Performance. Professor Di Salvo had this to say about Prozone’s role in the continued development of football in Qatar: “Success centres on the quality and ability of our teams, and with a focus on advancing education at all levels through the utilization of detailed and scientific performance data we can begin to achieve this. The QFA and Prozone share a strong partnership… to ultimately help Qatari football to reach its full potential.”

This ambition to compete at the highest levels is mirrored by the Russian National Team and given further credence by the successful bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Our Russian International Business Development Manager, Boris Genusov has this to say about Prozone’s impact in Russia “With PROZONE3 now installed at Russia’s Luzhniki Stadium, the Russian National Team, and its technical staff, now have the opportunity to make use of the world’s leading performance analysis solutions. I think it’s safe to say that over the past year Prozone has been identified as the most desirable and useful performance analysis system available in Russia.”

ACADEMIC RESEARCH Analysis of FA Premier League Referee Match Performance Activity

Prozone works with a number of leading universities and industry professionals, in a collaborative approach to providing insights and demonstrated conclusions in sports performance research. Prozone’s commitment to our ongoing research partnerships is an important investment in academic development and scientific performance expertise that will ultimately supplement the enhancement of existing and new technologies. A recent study with contributions from leading academics at Teesside and Liverpool John Moores Universities, together with the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO), has been to investigate the relationship between the match activity profiles of referees with those of the players in the same match. This line of investigation followed on from a previous study published in 2007 whereby the referees’ match physical performances were found to be related in part to those of the players in the same match.

and across-season rates of change in total distance covered, highspeed running and sprinting were consistent with the changes recorded by the players. Such results show that referees’ match physical performances are interrelated with those of the players and demonstrate that referees are able to keep pace with the players during FA Premier League matches. The physical performances of FA Premier League players have been demonstrated to vary significantly from match to match (Gregson et al., 2010). Therefore, given that the referees’ performances have been demonstrated to be interrelated with those of the players on the same match a further study was undertaken by the same researchers to quantify the between-match variability in football referees’ match performances.

Match activity data was collected from 18 referees officiating in the English Premier League during the 2008/09 season, captured via the PROZONE3 player tracking solution.

This comprehensive study, spanning 5 seasons with a total of 1269 matches analysed, demonstrated that variability in soccer referees’ match performances is high in some variables and not dependent on referee age or experience. Such variability means that research requires large sample sizes to detect real systematic changes in a number of performance characteristics when studied during matches.

The results of the study reported that the referees’ within-match
