◆ RISING TO CHALLENGES: Belinda Lacy has been involved in the Girl Guide movement for most of her life.

FOR over 30 years, Wangaratta’s Belinda Lacy has had an indelible connection with the Girl Guide movement. She first got involved in the Brownies at Boweya, as many of her peers in the small community were also involved. “It was just the done thing,” she said. Once she got older, it was necessary to join one of the Girl Guide units in Wangaratta, and she was happily involved there between 1993-1995, later joining the Wangaratta Sregnar Unit and becoming a junior leader. Belinda said she has many happy memories of her youth in the Guiding movement. She said she particularly loved camping, because it gave her the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, learning skills and meeting challenges, as well as meeting new people who were “very soon friends”. After her time in Wangaratta, Belinda continued to be involved in Guiding, and was excited in the mid-2000s to be able to volunteer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with the Girl Guide Association there through the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD) program funded through DFAT. She spent a year there working in the national office undertaking administration support, as well as leaders training.

Growth Plate Fractures IN young animals there are certain areas within the bones that are active in contributing to the growth of the bones over the early parts of an animal’s life. These areas are obviously very important in allowing an animal to reach its full size but, unfortunately, they also represent a weak point in the bone and can be the site of fractures in growing animals. Any damage to these areas can affect the growth of a bone from that site but luckily most of the bones have two or more growth plates and the others can often take over from the damaged areas without there being a major long term shortening of a bone. The exception to this is in sites where two bones are linked together like the radius and ulna in the foreleg. In these places the slowing in growth of one bone and the normal rate of growth in the other can lead to bowing of the leg. If a growth plate is fractured it is important to stabilise the fracture back into the correct anatomical alignment.

with Tim Craig BVSc, VETERINARIAN

This can often be done with bone pins and sometimes small screws or bone plates. Young animal bones heal very rapidly and often rigid fixation and rest for four weeks will see good healing and allow return to normal activities. Fixation of these fractures also prevents further damage to the growth plate and tries to preserve any residual function within these areas. These fractures can often occur when a puppy or kitten under one year of age is subjected to a force on their legs. A classic example is when a young animal is accidentally stood on when it gets itself under someone’s feet. Significant lameness that is not resolving is the usual presentation and x-rays can be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

◆ VIBRANT: Basket fungus.

◆ LIFE FINDS A WAY: Decaying tree stump, with assistance from a fungus.

Fascinating fungi They appear in ancient myths and legends, in witchcraft and in fairy tales from many cultures. In temperate zones, fungi usually appear rapidly after rain during autumn and winter. In the home garden, fungi may grow on dead wood, and are a sure indicator that a tree is dying or dead. With the popularity of bark mulch, which is usually imported in the home garden from elsewhere, many varieties of fungi that we may never have seen previously may be imported with the garden mulch. The orange basket fungus [Clathus ruber] appeared in our garden among imported wood chip mulch. Fungi from all across the world have spread as unseen ‘passengers’ in imported plant material.

Toadstools, mushrooms - fungi – are the visible, fruiting bodies of a webbed mass called the mycelium which is threaded through substrate [e.g. in compost, tree bark, soil or leaf litter]. The mycelium absorbs nutrients, as fungi cannot photosynthesise. In natural forest areas, these mycelium feeding threads of ground-dwelling fungi continually spread outwards seeking food sources, and the fruiting bodies which appear in autumn appear as toadstools in a ‘fairy ring’. Fungi play an important role in unseen ways. Specialised fungi share a symbiotic relationship with the roots of trees and some plants. The roots develop specialised feeding threads, which utilise

fungi for nutrient intake. In return, the plant roots provide the fungi with water and sugars. Another type of fungus assists in the breakdown and recycling of dead plants and animal material. And there are many, many more. Fungi do not fit neatly into the classification of living things as either animals or plants. In Australia, there are estimated to be approximately 250,000 species of fungi, and less than 5 per cent have been described. They are so diverse in their makeup that they may be eventually classified into several ‘new’ kingdoms. Be fascinated by the fungi that you find! These mysterious organisms play an important role in the ongoing health of our planet.

YOUR HEALTH

Pizzini Wines 2017 Nonna Gisella Sangiovese WE all have our favourite, winter dishes - the comfort foods that entice you to stay home, curl up on the couch and indulge when it’s cold outside. They are often guilty pleasures, enjoyed on nights when the diet gets put on hold for a night, calorie counting goes out the window and portion size tends to be a little more than recommended. For me it is often lasagne, rich with beef and tomato, thick with béchamel sauce and topped with cheese that has got a little too burnished and crusty in the hot oven. It’s almost impossible to cut a modest portion of lasagne – the way it’s constructed demands it be served by the slab or it’s prone to collapse. Whether it’s lasagne, gnocchi, ravioli or spaghetti, it’s hard to beat with a glass of Pizzini Nonna Gisella Sangiovese,

with Anita McPherson named after Alfred Pizzini’s grandmother. The medium bodied wine is a light russet colour and has a vibrant and spicy aroma of cherry and plum fruit. The cherry fruit flavour is quite savoury and herby, the uplifting spiciness making it ideal with rich and meaty, or tomatobased dishes. I’ve long been an advocate for the Sangiovese road trip, and Pizzini makes it easy by offering a whole series of Sangiovese you can sample at the one cellar door. Why move too far when you don’t have to? Available from local outlets, the cellar door in Whitfield or visit www.pizzini.com.au.

This Day in History, 1901 THE intensely cold spell of July 1901 froze Lake Como, off Murdoch Road, and enabled the local youths to try out new winter sports. The thickness of the ice was well able to support the weight of a man, in fact, a number of youths jumped up and down on it until it broke. The thickness of the ice was discovered to be two and a half inches, and samples of it were exhibited in the town’s shop windows.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT: Limiting stimulants and eating more fruit and vegetables can help alleviate acne problems.

Acne: The battle fought by both teens and adults ACNE is a skin condition that can affect anyone in any stage of life and is commonly found in teenagers but can also affect adults. Self-esteem, self-confidence, and your general outlook on life can be affected when you have acne. Presenting in many forms, from oily skin to dry flaky skin, acne can mostly affect the face, but can also occur on the chest and upper back. Acne develops as a result of blockages in skin follicles, followed by the formation of a sebum (oil) and keratin plug; the plug enlarges as the sebum production increases with hormonal fluctuations resulting in acne. Treatment can vary according to individual needs; however a few simple guidelines can help alleviate acne symptoms.

Re-hydrate: drinking water to aid in removal of excessive oil, waste and toxins. Adequate hydration also helps moisten your skin which reduces the likelihood of your pores clogging. Add lemon juice to water for added flavor. Diet: Limit stimulants such as coffee, tea, cigarettes, and excessive sugar from sweets and soda. Not only do these stimulants affect your entire body they also increase the secretion of sebum. Increasing fruits and vegetables in the diet will increase your antioxidant status and alkalize your body which will help your body heal. Cleanse: use a gentle cleansing product, preferably with as little additives and preservatives as possible, and follow with a toner and moisturizer. Natural moisturizers hydrate the skin from the outside and help protect the skin from environmental damage.

Exercise: helps increase lymphatic flow and circulation to the affected area, bringing immune products to help fight possible infection and aid in healing. Foods can also aid in healing and reduces the formation of acne are high in zinc and minerals as well as natural omega 3 and 6 oils to reduce inflammation. · Oysters · lean red meat · Eggs · Fruits & Vegetables, try as many different colors as you can · Fish – tuna, salmon. · Whole grains: buckwheat, amaranth, brown rice, quinoa, millet, oats · Seeds: pumpkin, sesame, etc. · Legumes, chickpeas, black eyed peas, lentils etc. · Spinach and salad greens.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ BRIGHT: There’s more to light than flicking on a switch.

◆ LOW SNOW AMOUNT: Another chilly but sunny day. It is a great day to head out to see the sights and delights on a short walk. Today’s pic show that there is still some tobogganing fun out at Cresta and beautiful scenes to enjoy, Lake Catani being one.

Lots on for snow goers THE snow season is in full swing in the North East, with plenty happening around the resorts. At Falls Creek this Friday you can see all the action of the Rossignol Cup, which gives junior ski and snowboard racers the chance to gain invaluable race experience in a relaxed and fun environment. This weekend at Falls Creek also sees the Cranky Charlie Cup, The Board Lounge Throwdown (Friday), Snow Trek and Travel events (throughout the weekend) and the Birkebeiner Classic cross country event (Sunday). Monday also sees the South Australian Interschools Snowsport Championships kick off, and the sports will continue throughout next week. Meanwhile at Mt Hotham, Lego fun is continuing until July 17 at the Big D kids hub, and there is also plenty of school holiday activities taking place throughout the resort. At Mt Buller, the 2019 Snowracer Series - Giant Slalom Race

2 will take place on Satuday, as will TBR Expression 2, which will see some spectacular highflying jumps. July 17 on Buller will also see South Australian Schools Snowsports events. At Mt Buffalo, activities available are dependent on snow cover, and it is best to check on the internet or at your nearest ski hire place to find out the current conditions. Shedding light on light ARE you scared of the dark? It’s not surprising if you are, because humans are creatures of the light, deeply programmed through millions of years of history to avoid the dark dangers of the night. Light is vitally important to us, but we don’t always take the trouble to understand it. Why does it make some things appear to be different colors from others? Does it travel as particles or as waves? Why does it move so quickly? Let’s take a closer look at some of these questions and shed some light on light. What is light? Light arrives on our planet after a speedy trip from the Sun, 149 million kilometres (93 million miles) away. Light travels at 186,000 miles (300,000km) per second, so the light you’re seeing now was still tucked away in the Sun about eight minutes ago. To put it another way, light takes roughly twice as long to get from the Sun to Earth as it does to make a cup of coffee. Light is energy But why does light make this journey at all? As you probably know, the Sun is a nuclear fireball spewing energy in all directions. The light that we see it simply the one part of the energy that the Sun makes that our eyes can detect.

When light travels between two places (from the Sun to the Earth or from a flashlight to the footpath in front of you on a dark night), energy makes a journey between those two points. The energy travels in the form of waves (similar to the waves on the sea but about 100 million times smaller) - a vibrating pattern of electricity and magnetism that we call electromagnetic energy. If our eyes could see electricity and magnetism, we might see each ray of light as a wave of electricity vibrating in one direction and a wave of magnetism vibrating at right angles to it. These two waves would travel in step and at the speed of light. Is light a particle or a wave? For hundreds of years, scientists have argued over whether light is really a wave at all. Back in the 17th century, English scientist Sir Isaac Newton - one of the first people to study the matter in detail - thought light was a stream of “corpuscles” or particles. But his great rival, Christiaan Huygens, was quite adamant that light was made up of waves. Thus began a controversy that still rumbles on today - and it’s easy to see why. In some ways, light behaves just like a wave: light reflects off a mirror, for example, in exactly the same way that waves crashing in from the sea “reflect” off sea

walls and go back out again. In other ways, light behaves much more like a stream of particles. During the 20th century, physicists came to believe that light could be both a particle and a wave at the same time. Light reflects Light behaves in four particularly interesting and useful ways that we describe as reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference. For now, let’s take a look at reflection. Reflection can happen in two quite different ways. If you have a smooth, highly polished surface and you shine a narrow beam of light at it, you get a narrow beam of light reflected back off it. This is called specular reflection and it’s what happens if you shine a flashlight or laser into a mirror: you get a welldefined beam of light bouncing back towards you. Most objects aren’t smooth and highly polished: they’re quite rough. So, when you shine light onto them, it’s scattered all over the place. This is called diffuse reflection and it’s how we see most objects around us as they scatter the light falling on them. In simple terms, if you can see your face in something, it’s specular reflection; if you can’t see your face, it’s diffuse reflection. Next week, we’ll look at the other behaviours of light, and where light comes from.
