It’s easy being green with this smoothie Green Greenie smoothie THIS colourful smoothie, which serves one and packs in four to five grams fibre per serve, is a great way to start the day and get a boost of folate and vegetable iron.

Refrigerate all vegetables overnight so they are cold when blended for a refreshing drink.

If you have a sweet tooth, add a tablespoon of either pure maple/agave/coconut syrup to taste.

Lasting change, one step at a time THE closing days of each year are often when people’s thoughts turn to self improvement and New Year’s resolutions, with many hoping to work harder to reach their goals in the year to come.

For a lot of people, everyday life gets in the way, or the enormity of the task before them can seem too daunting to continue.

But Wangaratta woman Jess O’Neill is living proof that moderation, consistency and commitment to training pays off, and that every little bit of effort helps.

Jess said she first became determined to address her overall health in October last year, to keep up with toddler son Alexander as well as wanting to expand her family with husband Tim. She began with home workouts and dietary changes, but soon realised she wanted to ramp up her efforts, and joined Wangaratta YMCA. She took part in their Retrain the Brain program, which is based on mindset, nutrition and exercise, and has been working with health and wellness specialist

Vanda Bisignano ever since.

Jess said she now concentrates on cooking much more nutritious meals for herself, Alexander and husband Tim – with more carefully controlled portions - as well as getting to the gym up to five times a week and taking various classes, including circuit and boxing classes.

Since making her lifestyle change, she has lost around 20kg, and said that she has felt the benefits of improving her health and nutrition in various ways, including having increased stamina for her work in the retail industry.

“My energy levels are definitely further up,” she said.

“I’m keeping up with my life in general, and my overall mental wellbeing is better.”

She added it was great to have the energy to chase after Alexander.

“I love being able to run after him,” Jess said.

She said ongoing positive lifestyle change needs ongoing commitment, but that people should not be discouraged if they craved the occasional treat or takeaway meal, as moderation and flexibility is the key.

Work on better communication at Christmas

CHRISTMAS is a great time for family and friends to gather together, as it is a time when we can catch up with people we have not seen recently.

It is important that everyone be included in these activities, even if they happen to have a hearing loss.

What can we do to improve communication with our loved ones who have a hearing loss?

Firstly, ensure the person is ready to get the message and watching the speaker. All of us get involved in our own thoughts from time to time.

If we are not listening, we will not get the message.

Clear speech at a comfortable listening level is really important.

When a person is wearing their hearing aids, it is helpful to speak at a normal level – correctly set hearing aids amplify voices to the right level for that person.

Also, please keep in mind it is helpful to speak a normal pace, not too fast or slow.

Reducing the level of background noise will assist anyone with a hearing loss to hear better.

It may be helpful to set aside some oneon-one time to catch up with someone you see infrequently.

Then, if it is really noisy when all the family is around, you will already have had those meaningful conversations.

Children, health and food a balancing act FAMILY meals can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the day, although they can also be utterly challenging and stressful.

What kids eat and don’t eat can be very emotional for the parents and children.

Children use food as emotional leverage, as do parents.

A parent himself, Christos Miliankos from North East Naturopathic Group is all too familiar with the struggles parents face. “We lead a very busy life with lots of kids’ sports and activities, though we generally enjoy sitting at the table for an evening meal together. “We hover between making new healthy foods to our easy family favourites like gluten free pasta with a homemade tuna, garlic and tomato sauce, or one of their all time favourites is our simple rice meal – everyone loves that one.�

He added that serving size control is essential. “We usually put a good sized children’s helping but not too much,� he said. “Generally, our food rule is they don’t have to eat it if they are not hungry – though there is nothing else available to them until the next meal. “Other rules we sometimes use are ‘you can choose one thing on the table not to have’.

He added that he has learned over the years that children are dictated to by their stomachs and will always eat eventually.

Christos said that when it came to feeding the family, he always tried to be as healthy as possible, although occasional treats are allowed, and rules are relaxed to a certain degree when they are spending time with grandparents, although lollies and soft drinks

are consumed minimally due to their lack of nutritional value. “I didn’t want to have to fight with them, so I made a rule that they were allowed to choose whatever they wanted when out with others though if it was soft drinks or lollies then they had to pay $1 into the ‘dentist jar’ to help pay for our dentist bills. “It generally seems to work and because the oldest ones were saving up for an iPod they didn’t want to lose money so they chose

mineral water, juice or chocolate.�

Christos’ advice to parents is to take things one step at a time. “Let’s take the negative emotion out of it,� he said. “Food is to be enjoyed as nourishment and the social connectedness that it brings. Bon appetit.�

Managing and treating pain OVER the years Barb Binks at PhysioCare Wangaratta has had many clients present to the clinic with odd symptoms.

Some examples of these have been: a swollen hand which is very painful and changes colour from white to red to blue for no apparent reason, unexplained hair growth, rough nails and shiny skin.

Some years ago Barb attended a workshop run by Dr David Butler, a physiotherapist with the Neuro Orthopaedic Institute, and suddenly these strange symptoms which were seemingly unrelated to the clients’ original injury were explained, and better still, in most cases managed well and full recovery achieved.

Pain is normally felt when the brain needs to warn us of tissue stress or injury.

“Special techniques can be used that many clients find a bit weird but when performed can alter pain perception, reduce swelling and change skin colour as well as a range of other

Increasing activity can have major health impacts A NEW report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) shows that small increases in our levels of physical activity could have major positive health impacts for the whole population.

The report, Impact of physical inactivity as a risk factor for chronic conditions: Australian Burden of Disease Study, looks at the health impact—or ‘burden’—of a lack of physical activity in terms of years of healthy life lost through living with an illness or injury, or through dying prematurely.

Using data from 2011, the report found that 2.6 per cent of the total disease burden in Australia was due to physical inactivity.

“And when physical inactivity is combined with overweight and obesity, the burden increased to nine per cent - equal with tobacco smoking, which is the leading risk factor for disease burden in Australia,” said AIHW spokesperson Michelle Gourley.

But the impact could be significantly reduced with just small changes to our levels of physical activity.

“We found that if everyone did an extra 15 minutes of brisk walking, five days each week, this would reduce disease burden due to physical inactivity in the population by about 13 per cent,” Ms Gourley said.

This amount of activity could be achieved by taking a walk on your lunch break, or getting off the bus or train a few stops earlier.

“And if the extra activity rose to 30

minutes, the burden could be reduced by 26 per cent.”

The benefit would be felt especially among those who are currently sedentary, as well as those aged 65 and over.

Physical inactivity was associated with seven diseases in this study.

The diseases most closely linked to physical inactivity—and which stand to gain the biggest reductions in burden from increased levels of physical activity—are diabetes (for which physical inactivity was responsible for 19 per cent of the burden), bowel and uterine cancer (16 per cent each), and dementia (14 per cent).

Physical inactivity was responsible for 11 per cent of the breast cancer and coronary heart disease burden, and 10 per cent of the stroke burden.

Overall, the burden of physical inactivity is higher among people in lower socioeconomic groups, with people in the lowest group experiencing rates of burden at 1.7 times that of the highest group.

Earlier this year, the AIHW released analysis showing that as little as a three kilogram reduction in body weight could significantly reduce the burden of obesity.

Advanced medical technology at Wangaratta X-Ray WANGARATTA X-Ray has continued to keep pace with advances in medical technology with some of the latest additions to their diagnostic equipment.

In the past few months, the clinic has taken possession of a new mammography machine, a Fuji Amulet model utilising the latest in tomosynthesis mammography.

Tomosynthesis technology makes it possible to observe the breast tissue in three dimensions, and from a variety of angles, to detect abnormalities.

In this technology, the x-ray tubes move through an arc while acquiring a series of low-dose x-ray images, which are then reconstructed into a range of tomosynthesis “slices”.

These images make it easier to identify lesions or abnormalities which may be difficult to visualise in routine mammography, because of the presence of overlapping breast structures.

Wangaratta X-Ray’s Wayne Ashton said the new technology can benefit both men and women, and the new machine has less pressure and discomfort than some of its older counterparts.

The clinic has also recently begun using the Australiandeveloped Pro Medicus Visage software, which offers referring doctors and allied health services immediate access to diagnostic images generated at the clinic across a number of compatible devices.
