KIA SORENTO: is a quality SUV/people mover crossover.
Kia Sorento is big, bold and practical IT’S a bit of a stretch to call Kia the sleeping giant of the Australian automotive industry but for a company ZLWKVXFKFORVHOLQNVWRLWVKLJK³\LQJ Korean sibling, Hyundai, it has long been something of an under-performer. That’s all changed in the last two years with back-to-back growth in sales of 20.5 per cent in 2015 and 26.5 per cent in 2016 and Kia has now moved into the top 10 RIRYHUDOOPRWRUYHKLFOHVDOHVIRUWKH²UVW time. This week’s test vehicle, the Sorento is the larger of Kia’s two SUV models and it has been an important contributor in the sales growth following the arrival of its current (third generation) model in mid2015.
By ALISTAIR KENNEDY Sorento comes in four grades. In rising order of equipment and price they are Si, SLi, Platinum and GT-Line. Prices range from $40,990 for the petrol two-wheel-drive Si to $58,490 for the turbo-diesel AWD GT-Line. Sorento is neat and compact with a high bonnet and the characteristic Kia grille ³DQNHGE\ODUJHFXWRXWVIRUWKHIRJOLJKWV and eyebrow headlights topped by LED daytime running lights. Both the grille and lower air intake have DQDWWUDFWLYHKRQH\FRPE²OO 7KHURR³LQH³RZVJUDGXDOO\GRZQZDUGV from above the front seats to the rear and, while it does reduce headroom in
the third row seats that’s only going to be a problem in the unlikely event of adults occupying the seats. Kia Sorento is a seven-seater, effectively an SUV / people mover crossover, so outward vision is important and the side windows are large and extend all the way to the rear. Likewise, the rear of the vehicle is squared-off to enable 320 litres of luggage to be carried even when all seven seats are in use. That increases to 1077 litres with the third row seatbacks folded, and a vanlike 2066 litres with the second row also folded. Standard across all three models are roof rails and rear spoiler.
SLi and Platinum add a handsfree powered tailgate and LED rear combination lights with the Platiunum getting a panoramic sunroof. The Si rides on 17-inch alloy wheels; the SLi on 18-inch alloys and Platinum and GTLine on 19s. The latest addition to the Sorento range, the GT-Line, added in late 2016, gets chrome wheels, stainless steel side steps, red brake calipers, red leather trim, paddle shifters, LED ice cube fog lamps, chrome accented interior and GT-Line badging. Two engines are available, 3.3-litre V6 petrol and four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbodiesel.

New Holden Commodore wagon By (:$1.(11('< HOLDEN has released details of the NG Commodore station wagon (Sportwagon in Holden terms) telling XVLWZLOOEHVSDFLRXVUH²QHGDQGRIIHU exemplary safety. The upcoming Holden Sportwagon will have its world premiere in Opel guise at WKH*HQHYD0RWRU6KRZRQ0DUFKDQG will go on sale in Australia at a date yet to be announced in 2018. Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later as the Holden Australian factories are closing their doors in late October this year. The NG (Next-Generation) Holden Sportwagon will be the most advanced Holden ever, with technology such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive suspension, adaptive cruise control and matrix lighting. Not all items will be standard in every NG, Holden will release details on this closer to launch time. Well aware that buyers are leaning towards SUVs instead of station ZDJRQV*02SHODQG*0+ROGHQ stylists have remained close to the VKDSHRIWKH2SHO0RQ]DFRQFHSW It has a standout grille framed by sculpted headlights. The signature ‘blade’ styling starts in the front doors and sweeps towards the rear. The silver roof rails also help stretch the car visually. The rear end looks particularly impressive, being sleek without too much loss in load space. The wagon on which Commodore is based, the upcoming Opel Insignia Sports Tourer is up to 200 kilograms lighter than the current Commodore, depending on powertrain and trim. It’s also slightly smaller than the outgoing Commodore wagon, but has similar legroom and headroom, though interior width is slightly less. All-new Commodore Sportwagon is a big vehicle with up to 1640 litres of

Drivetrain line-up is the same as in the &RPPRGRUH²YHGRRUKDWFKEDFNZLWK four-cylinder turbo-petrol and turbodiesel options. It comes as no surprise that the big emphasis on the initial media information is on the sporting &RPPRGRUH³DJVKLSPRGHO It will come with a 3.6-litre V6 engine putting out 230 kilowatts of power and 370 Newton metres of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission to
an all-wheel-drive system. Adaptive suspension technology and torque-vectoring will further add to its dynamic ability. Engineered in Germany and to be sold in other markets as the Opel Insignia, new Holden Commodore has DVLJQL²FDQWDPRXQWRI$XVWUDOLDQ engineering input. Holden tells us it will have a worldfirst ‘Twinster’ all-wheel drive system, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Driver assistance systems include a head-up-display, with information RQVSHHGWUDI²FVLJQVVHWVSHHGRI speed limiter, or navigation direction projected onto the windshield. Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist with automated steering correction, and Lane
Departure Warning. The latter gives gentle steering wheel movements (and LDW alerts if necessary) to help save lives of the ever increasing number of drivers who are spending more time looking at messages on screens than on the road ahead. 5HDU&URVV7UDI²F$OHUWXVHVUDGDU sensors in the rear bumper to detect objects coming from up to 20 metres at 90 degrees from the left or right side behind the vehicle. An excellent safety device when reversing out of a parking spot with limited visibility. We can’t wait to hear more on the next generation Commodore. We will bring further information as it’s released by Holden, and, best of all, driving impressions as soon as we can get behind the wheel.

The V6, offered only in the 2WD models, generates 199 kilowatts of power and 318 Nm of torque at a very high 5300 rpm. The AWD Sorento models, to cater for the potential extra demands, get the diesel engine which produces 147 kW of power and a healthy 441 Nm of torque between 1750 rpm and 2750 revs. All Sorento models have a six-speed automatic transmission. Sorento’s tech features use the Kia audio-video navigation (AVN) system using a 7.0-inch LCD touchscreen. All models get satellite navigation with 681$WUDI²FLQIRUPDWLRQ$X[DQG86% LQSXWDQG%OXHWRRWKIXQFWLRQDOLW\3DLULQJ is intuitive and fast. Entry and exit is easy with little bending and straightening required. The front seats are large, comfortable and supportive. The middle row second row seats can slide back and forward with plenty of legroom for the tallest of adult passengers when set in the rearmost position. The rearmost pair of seats and the centre seat in the second row are best left for children. On the road we found the big Kia to be quiet, comfortable and smooth. It’s clearly focused mainly at the people mover rather than the off-road market, which makes plenty of sense given the current buyer trends. Suspension and steering have received VLJQL²FDQW$XVWUDOLDQLQSXWDQGWKHUHV good road grip without any obvious loss of comfort. We did take it for a brief off-road
excursion where it handled dirt sections with some big potholes without any problem. There are three drive modes, Normal, Sport and Eco modes. During our test period fuel consumption of the turbo-diesel averaged out at 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined F\FOHQRWWKDWIDUDERYHWKHRI²FLDO L/100 km. We then switched to ECO mode for a 50 km economy run on the motorway and outer Sydney suburbs where we averaged an impressive 6.3 L/100 km. Combined city/rural fuel usage from the V6 petrol is listed at 9.9 L/100 km. We opened this review by highlighting Kia’s spectacular sales growth over the past couple of years. One of the major reasons for this is the company’s industry-leading seven years, unlimited distance warranty. It’s been a very clever marketing strategy EHFDXVHLWLVDWWUDFWLQJPDQ\²UVWWLPH buyers to the brand. 0DQ\RIWKHVHQHZFRPHUVZLOOKDYH stepped into a Sorento and we’d be surprised if they haven’t been impressed by this large, versatile vehicle with its excellent combination of style, carrying capacity and sophistication.

The new Audi S4 full of fun and function
By EWAN KENNEDY THE relentless advancement in technology is everywhere, and nowhere PRUHVRWKDQLQWKHDXWRPRWLYH²HOG Witness the stunning new Audi S4 highperformance range. Audi S4’s ancestry dates back to 1993 (though it was called S6 at the time). Priced at $132,000 that hot machine SURGXFHGNLORZDWWVIURPLWV²YH cylinder in-line engine and ran the zero to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. Today’s just-launched 2017 Audi S4 launches to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds thanks to its twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6’s 260 kW. And is priced from just $99,900. So, costing a staggering $33,000 less, the Audi is much quicker, more HFRQRPLFDODQGVLJQL²FDQWO\FOHDQHU Given that Audi’s catch phrase Vorsprung der Technik translates approximately into English as Advancement Through Technology, these changes perhaps shouldn’t surprise us. But it does raise the question of what will come out of Audi’s HQ in Ingolstadt in 24 years time? A word on the price though, to bring things back to reality. While the list price RIWKH²UVW$XGLZHWHVWHGRQDGULYH program out of Mount Panorama on the Friday of the Bathurst 12-hour race weekend, we motoring journos lead a tough life - had a tag of $116,196, not $99,900. It was coated in a red pearl effect paint that added $1846. The sports differential in the quattro AWD system, $2950. A $5600 Technik package consisting of matrix headlights, Band & Olufsen 3D
sound system, and a head-up display. Finally, the S performance package that included sports seats with pneumatic lumbar support, upgraded upholstery and trim details, and red painted brake callipers. Audi S4 comes in both four-door sedan DQG²YHGRRUVWDWLRQZDJRQIRUPDWWKH latter referred to in Audi speak as Avant and priced from $102,990. Styling changes to the standard Audi A4 to produce the S4 are comparatively subtle, though train spotters will have no trouble seeing that it sits 23 mm lower, has a revised grille treatment, side skirts and rear diffuser. Audi’s stylists have gone for ‘high-performance’ looks in the add ons as they use aluminium and chrome with a grey look where appropriate. Inside are sports seats with good side VXSSRUWDÂłDWERWWRPHGVWHHULQJZKHHO and an extensive use of carbon inlays. The powertrain of the Audi S4 features a turbo-petrol V6 3.0-litre engine that puts out 260 kilowatts of power and 500 Newton metres of torque. The latter from a very low 1370 rpm, continuing till 4500 revs. Transmission permanently to all four wheels is by way of an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic that’s optimised to suit the sporting nature of the car and Audi’s quattro layout. Driving modes are Sport, Normal and (I²FLHQF\:HSULPDULO\XVHG6GXULQJ our initial 400+ kilometres at the media launch, but promise to try the others when we carry out our week’s test in our home area later. Our drive program took us from Mt
Panorama to Canberra airport, the long way around to make the best of quiet, interesting roads. The sports Audi is surprisingly well balanced for a car with an engine a fair way forward. Indeed, we had to lift the bonnet to check this wasn’t a front-mid layout. It corners at speeds double the suggested for most corners without trying particularly hard, with the quattro system’s optional sport diff playing its part. (Don’t try this at home ‌ a race track is the best way to explore limits, but we had excellent mapping of the road route we followed.) A less obvious area of advancement through technology in recent years is the ability to build a car with sporting VXVSHQVLRQDQGVH[\ORRNLQJORZSUR²OH tyres that is still reasonably comfortable. Some of the backroads we traversed had seen better days, but the S4 sedan and Avant wagon soaked up the lumps and bumps pretty well. A soft-riding limo it’s not, but passengers will seldom experience any real discomfort. There’s some engine turbo lag, but it really has been reduced to a minimum thanks to the installation of the turbocharger within the ’V’ of the engine. Once the lag is past, acceleration is immense and sure to bring a smile to your face as it makes for very safe overtaking. With maximum torque coming in at a ridiculously low 1370 revs hills cease to exist. Audi S4 is a technologically advanced sports sedan, or wagon, at a relatively low price. One for the short list of anyone ZKRZDQWVHI²FLHQWIDPLO\WUDQVSRUWWKDW also provides driving excitement.
PORSCHE Australia has expanded its Cayenne range, adding two Platinum Edition models, Cayenne S Platinum Edition and Cayenne S Diesel Platinum Edition. They gain added comfort and design features above the standard equipment of S models. The Platinum Edition Cayennes have 21-inch Sport Edition wheels in a platinum shade with a satin finish. Window surrounds have a high gloss black finish, all adding to an assertive look. Included are eight-way leathertrimmed sports front seats, with Alcantara centres as fitted to the Cayenne GTS; a Porsche crest on all head rests; and a panoramic sunroof. “Platinum Edition lettering adorns the front door sills. There’s a sporty analogue clock on the dashboard. There’s surround-view park assist; and lane change. Connect Plus is added to the Porsche Communication Management systems Available colours are solid black or white, or the metallic colours of Jet Black, Mahogany, Purpurite, Carrara White and Rhodium Silver. Power outputs remain unchanged over the S models with the 309 kW 3.6-litre six-cylinder bi-turbo engine in the Cayenne S. The V8 engine with twin turbocharging in the Cayenne S Diesel generating 283 kW and has official fuel consumption of 8.2 L/100 km. Together with versions of the Cayenne, Cayenne Diesel and the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, the Platinum Edition now comprises five Cayenne models. The additional standard features are valued in excess of $12,000. Cayenne S Platinum Edition is priced at $137,100 which represents a price reduction of 4.3 per cent over the standard S despite the significant level of additional equipment. These additions to the Porsche Cayenne range can be ordered now, first deliveries are expected from late May 2017.
