GLORY DAYS: Beautiful styling of the Jaguar F-Type sees a revival of the British marque’s glory years.

THE Jaguar F-Type, which reached us Downunder in 2013, has been argued by many as being the true replacement for the legendary E-Type Jag. Sure, the F- smaller than the E-Type but it doesn’t look that much down in size. Best of all it’s a genuine sports machine.

While the XK Jaguar is similar in size to the gorgeous old E-Type both are more grand-touring high-speed cruisers than full-on sports machines. There’s no doubt the F-Type is a real sportscar.

We have just spent a wonderful three weeks over the Christmas New-Year break in the newest version of the F-Type coupe, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder.

Yes, turbocharged four-cylinder, not supercharged V6 or V8 as we have driven and loved in F-Types in the past - more details later.

Talking about price, the $107,012 F-Type four-cylinder coupe is $14,200 under the next least-expensive model, the 3.0-litre 250 kW V6 at $121,212. The topline 5.0-litre V8 coupe costs an astronomic $290,512.

cooling ducts could have come from the pen of Sir William Lyons, the genius who designed the Jaguar E-Type all those years ago.

Inside, the twin round dials immediately in front of the driver give it a classic sportscar appearance. The seats look as good as they feel and there’s a feeling of high speed luxury in the materials used.

Not visible under the superb body is the fact that the F-Type is made almost exclusively from aluminium. This lightweight material isn’t easy to work with, but the engineers at Jaguar have plenty of experience with this material and have made it work well at the same time as following the stylists’ wishes.

Due to the use of the four-cylinder engine there’s 50 kilograms less weight over the front wheels. More about that in our Driving segment.

POWERTRAINS Chasing lower emissions has meant many European car makers - low, medium and upper crust - have worked magic with small-displacement high-pressure turbo units.

The guys and gals at Jaguar have managed to get peak power of 221 kilowatts at a pretty low 5000rpm. And a hefty 400Nm all the way from 1500 to 4500 revs, from their 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium twinscroll single-turbo petrol unit.

60th Anniversary

IN August 1959 Morris and Austin launched brand new cars called Mini-Minor and Austin Seven respectively (same car, different names, and this isn’t the place to talk about Riley and Wolseley models).

They were a brilliant design, with a surprisingly large interior due to having an engine mounted sideways across the front, with the gearbox in the sump and driving the front wheels. All four wheels were pushed out to the corners.

Though aimed at low-cost motoring for the masses the Mini was a huge success with celebrities world-wide, so somewhat TRIBUTE: Shades of the old Bathurst 500 winning Mini are there oddly, became a status symbol. without the need for too much imagination.

Minis were made in many countries, including Australia, and remained on the new car market until, five million vehicles later, it ceased production in 2000. The great majority were two-door sedans, but station wagons, utes, panel vans and beach buggies (Mokes) were also built.

BMW took control of the financially strapped Rover Group (formerly British Leyland) in 1994 and when the original model was discontinued it introduced a new, much larger, Mini in 2001.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary BMW has announced the MINI 60 Years Edition will be available from March 2019 as a MINI 3 Door and MINI 5 Door, each with four engine variants. That’s the good news, the

The new engine is mated to an eightspeed automatic and sends drive to the rear wheels.

Jaguar’s all-wheel drive system that’s sold in some high-performance variants isn’t offered in the four-cylinder. Which makes sense because (a) 400 Nm is easily controlled by a quality rear-drive system, (b) it would add weight in this less powerful car and (c) significantly increase the price.

INFOTAINMENT Jaguar’s Touch Pro infotainment system features Meridian audio, a suite of connected services and, for the first time in F-Type, Apple CarPlay and Android auto. The new 10-inch touchscreen is significantly clearer than the superseded one.

SAFETY This Jaguar sailed with ease through crash testing to gain five stars. As well as the passive safety proven by this brutal testing, this British sports machine has magnificent dynamics and huge brakes to let an intelligent driver avoid having a crash in the first place.

DRIVING The engine is fast to respond and once a very brief period of lag has passed it has plenty of acceleration. The sound is pretty good, though obviously it doesn’t provide the aural excitement of the V8 unit.

The automatic is also quick to get into the act and the fact that there is peak torque there all the way from just 1500 rpm, which continues for another 3000 revs above that means there’s grunt to spare. Overtaking can be carried out

safely with a minimum of time on the wrong side of the road.

Handling is sharp and precise and the little Jag ‘talks’ to you responsively through the steering wheel and the seat of your pants. There’s an immense amount of grip and the balance in the, relatively, lightweight chassis gives it a lovely nimble feel.

The front seats supported my slim backside nicely, but someone who is wider than average may find themselves less comfortable. The leather trim on the seats was firmer than I like, but try for yourself to see what you feel.

This is strictly a two-seater, indeed there’s a minimum of space behind the seats and tall occupants who want to lean their seats back may find themselves somewhat frustrated. Then again, that’s not uncommon in this class.

The door pockets are a good size and there’s further stowage space between the seat backs.

Then there’s the boot - what a joke.

The huge spare tyre takes up most of the space. To the extent that if you lie a bulky briefcase on top of the spare you won’t be able to shut the bootlid. We managed to squeeze a week’s shopping for two people by juggling our reusable bags into the various small areas around the spare wheel.

And if you think the F-Type coupe’s boot is bad have a look at a convertible’s…

SUMMING UP The new low(ish) cost Jaguar F-Type looks great, drives brilliantly and deserves a place on the short list of any full-on driving enthusiast.

bad news is that it may be sold only in the UK, with none coming to Australia.

Sports car designer John Cooper developed ideas variants of the Mini with more powerful engines. Resulting in an exceptional career on racing circuits and rally tracks. They took out the Bathurst 500 in 1966 and had three outright victories at the Monte Carlo Rally during the ‘60s.

The exterior paint finish in British Racing Green seems certain to be the most popular, but Midnight Black metallic, Moonwalk Grey metallic, Melting Silver metallic and MINI Yours Lapis Blue are alternatives.

The chosen body colour is combined with a paint finish in Pepper White or Black for the roof and exterior mirror caps. Bonnet stripes with a specific anniversary design.

A 60 Years logo appears on the left- hand bonnet stripe but also on the side scuttles of the turn indicators and on the door sill finishers at the driver and front passenger doors.

Inside are model-specific interior trim finishers, front headrests and steering wheel. The anniversary design can also be seen in the LED logo projection which is visible when the driver’s door is opened.

Now Kia Cerato taps into ‘GT’ tag

BALANCED: The Kia Cerato takes on the ‘GT’ label and character to match.

IN days gone by, GT, as in Grand Touring, was generally reserved for aristocratic automobiles, usually from Europe, or American muscle cars. Then hot hatches got in on the act.

These days, GT seems to be bandied about, being given to any ‘below stairs’ vehicle showing spirit. Take the new Cerato GT from Kia, for example. Does it stack up to the top-shelf suffix?

The South Korean car maker thinks so, with its best-selling model, the Cerato sedan and hatch, adding a 1.6-litre turbo model and a ride and handling package coming up with the most focused drive in its small-car range.

From the get-go, the Cerato GT shows off its distinctive wares with body kit, dual exhausts, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts, alloy sports pedals and flat-bottom sports steering wheel.

However, the heart of the flagship is the four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 150 kW of power at 6000 rpm and 265 Nm of torque between 1500 and 4500 revs, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed doubleclutch automatic transmission, with Sport mode.

By DEREK OGDEN A local ride-and-handling team of engineers were called on to make the best of the car’s multi-link independent rear suspension, under Australia’s wide-ranging road surfaces.

“It was quite a balancing act to optimise the sporty possibilities of the GT platform, while still keeping the owner happy with driving in day-to-day activities,” says Kia Australia’s general manager for product, Roland Rivero.

The Cerato GT Hatch is longer by 160 mm, wider by 20 mm and 10 mm lower than the standard hatchback yet sits on the same wheelbase. Overhangs are increased 20 mm at the front and 140 mm at the rear, resulting in more luggage space, up 43 litres to 428 litres.

Engineers increased body stiffness for added safety and better handling in line with its sporty exterior and delivered a quieter cabin, all shown off well in a launch drive in Melbourne and the Yarra Valley.

Steering feel over the previous model has been upgraded through enhanced column-mounted motor driven power steering, reducing unwanted steering

feel and friction.

An already reworked suspension in the non-IRS models was improved on for the GT, which combined with better throttle and brake feel offered a smoother response to turn-in and shorter stopping distances than before.

Sport mapping added steering sharpness and weighting, as well as more precise shift points in Sport Mode, combine with a more aggressive suspension tune, larger ventilated front disc brakes and 18-inch alloy wheels, to offer above standard stopping performance.

Infotainment is taken care of by an 8-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with voice recognition, wireless phone charger, eight-speaker JBL Premium sound system and Bluetooth connectivity.

Further cabin comfort features include climate control air-conditioning and ventilated front sport seats.

The Cerato GTs take on all the active and passive safety systems of the Cerato range, winning a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

These include autonomous emergency braking that includes pedestrian and cyclist, forward collision warning, lane keep

assist, rear-view camera with dynamic guidelines, driver attention alert, front and rear parking sensors, drive mode select, six airbags, tyre pressure monitor, speed limiter, eight-way driver seat adjustment with two memory positions and smart cruise control.

Colours to go with a GT performance include Snow White Pearl, Silky Silver, Steel Grey, Platinum Graphite, Horizon Blue, Gravity Blue, Aurora Black Pearl, Runway Red and Sunset Orange, which is exclusive to GT. “Australian drivers are like few others in the world,” says Kia Motors Australia chief operating officer Damien Meredith. “They know what they like … and what they like is that rare combination of style, value and performance which doesn’t come along all that often.

“With the Cerato GT they have one additional opportunity to find what they are searching for and this time it is wearing a badge which comes with proven value and reliability.

“With a localisation program which had a clear focus on what the result was to be, the Cerato GT had to step up to the mark.”

Kia

puts the ‘GT’ question to Picanto test

WITH automatic transmissions leading the way in car sales to the detriment of manual gearboxes, the thought of a manual-only option for a hatchback would appear questionable.

Not to Kia, whose latest micro-model, the Picanto, has just added a hero GT version to its list. “We were warned that trying to launch a micro car into Australia was a fruitless exercise and doomed to failure,� Kia Motors Australia chief operating officer Damien Meredith says. “The segment was shrinking fast with only a handful of cars being sold. “Three years on and we are very happy with the way the Picanto has found a comfortable niche at the entry-level of the market. With that in mind it seemed like the right time to give an opportunity to a sporty version of the car, one for which there has been a constant undercurrent of demand.�

With that in mind, for the new Picanto GT, Kia called on a five-speed manual and

By EWAN KENNEDY hooked it up to a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that develops 74 kW at 4500 rpm, and 171 Nm of torque between 1500 and 4000 rpm.

All this is achieved thanks to a number of innovative technical solutions, including laser-drilled injectors with six holes in a pyramid shape so the fine mist of fuel is spread evenly throughout the cylinders and a straight air intake port ending in a sharp throat, reducing air resistance at all stages of the process.

Combined urban / highway cycle fuel consumption is put at 4.8 litres per 100km.

It was during this drive that the benefit of a suspension tuned especially for Australia by Kia Motors Australia’s rideand-handling team came to the fore.

Through a more aggressive tune for the shock absorbers and a stiffer spring rate the team was able to provide greater

body control with better road feedback as well as improved ride comfort.

Meanwhile, changes to steering mapping give a quicker response and enhanced stability when under load.

Lower profile 195/45 rubber on 16-inch alloy wheels improve both grip and assuredness when pushing the limit.

The GT shares much that is good about the current generation Picanto, including the ultra-stiff body shell, composed of 44 per cent advanced high-strength steels, providing premium handling and comfort, as well as occupant safety.

Extensive safety features include autonomous emergency braking, six airbags, ABS braking, electronic stability control, hill start assist, vehicle stability management, torque vectoring and forward collision warning.

The Picanto range’s straight-backed stance means there is ample head room in the rear for average-size passengers and the ability to maximise the 255 litres

of luggage space. This is easily increased to 1010 litres by folding the 60:40 seat backs.

Ostensibly a five-seater, shoulder space out back is very limited, especially with three adult passengers abreast.

Headrests are adjustable vertically, rare in this grade of vehicle.

Picanto GT has Bluetooth connectivity, four-speaker audio system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering wheelmounted audio controls, driver seat height adjustment, power windows front and rear with auto-up on driver’s window.

The GT has its own character on the outside with contrasting body accents, twin exhaust, a body kit and GT badge. It is available in Clear White and premium colours Titanium Silver, Aurora Black and Signal Red. As well as sharp looks, the cost of Picanto GT ownership is a stand-out.

At launch it can be driven out of the showroom for $17,990.
