WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL: EU AMBASSADOR
BYHARJANSINGH
Suzanne Clements, the Assistant Director of the Global Programs, and seven members of the Global Studies Diploma Program, were given the opportunity to meet the ambassador from the European Union to the United States through the World Affairs Council of Charlotte
The World Affairs Council of Charlotte provides opportunities for the Charlotte community to hear from leaders who are driving change throughout the world In this particular conference, students, teachers, business leaders, and others were invited to hear Lithuanian Ambassador Jovita Neliupšienė offer unique insight into the complex relationship between the U.S. and the E.U.
While the European Union was officially established in 1993, the European integration process was initiated by the U S during the aftermath of World War II Initially, it was an attempt to provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure, remove trade barriers, and prevent the spread of communism
Now, the E U has evolved into a transnational political and economic union of 27 European nations
Over the years, the U S and the E U have developed close relations Ambassador Neliupšienė gives the example of how, as of today, the E.U. is the United States’ biggest trading partner. She went on to describe how “in one minute, the E.U. and U.S. trade two million products,” and how “16 million people are employed because of trade,” emphasizing the positive effect of this relationship
Students were able to hear from the EU Ambassador to the US Picture courtesy of Harjan Singh
“This concept of trading goods and services is what strengthens the bond between countries,” she remarked. However, this is not just true for the U.S. In fact, the E.U, contributes to 30 percent of the world's trade and makes up 42 percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Despite its large involvement in world trade, as well as the significant wave of transformation it has undergone in the last 30 years, the E U is much more centered upon promoting peace, freedom, democracy, and equality
In recent years, the war in Ukraine has served as a reminder of the importance of the E U in maintaining these principles Ambassador Neliupšienė referred to the war as a “wake-up call” for the E U , reminding the audience of the main purpose of the European Union at a moment where people had begun to question the need for said organization Since the war in Ukraine began, the E.U. has responded through a collective funding effort of $174 billion, 50 billion of which are going to defense, along with the training of 75,000 Ukrainian troops.
While these efforts have proven effective in recent years, there is still more to be done “We all have to do more funding Ukraine is about protecting democracy, independence, and freedom,” says Ambassador Neliupšien
Overall, Ambassador Neliupšienė’s insight as to how the E U has seen much progress over the last 30 years, further implementing collaboration and trade, developing close international relations, and protecting fundamental human rights is how our nation can get the EU to work stronger together in the future

This allows club members to choose which projects they want and are able to participate in. These programs provide various volunteer opportunities including making blankets for women’s shelters and baking cookies for the Hospitality House of Charlotte Last year, the organization logged more than 200 hours of service, showing the incredible impact students can have when they come together for a good cause
Beyond volunteering, the organization fosters leadership, teamwork, and community All events are designed to be fun and engaging, offering a hands-on way to give back to the local community Whether new to community service or passionate about helping others, Good For Everyone is a great way to make a difference while balancing school and other extracurriculars
The organization has plans to pass down leadership to high schoolers in the Charlotte area because many of the members on the leadership team are graduating This opens up a great opportunity for those interested in a leadership role to hone their skills, allowing students to feel good about giving back.

WHY STUDENTS SHOULD TAKE A STUDY HALL
BYLUKELONGIN
Study halls are a course option that provides many benefits to students, yet the use of them is debated For many students, study halls provide crucial time during the day to complete work or take a much-needed break Unfortunately, too many students are reluctant to take advantage of this great opportunity Many students feel taking a study hall would be lazy or irresponsible; in reality it is the opposite Study halls can increase students' success simply by offering extra time in students' busy schedules to work on homework, take GOA courses, have a tutoring session, and more.
The original intention of a study hall was to offer students a quiet space to study or finish schoolwork, and this is still a very common practice today Having this time during the school day can reduce students' anxiety and open up their schedules more Students at Providence Day are involved in an assortment of extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, volunteer work, and afterschool jobs Trying to do all those while maintaining good grades, getting enough sleep, having time to relax, and keeping a social life is a battle many students struggle to win An extra hour of free time in students' schedules can help them to complete school work and studies during the day, leaving space after school for these many extracurriculars Senior Ashlynn Adams and Freshman Ellis Long both agree with this, saying that study halls have given them more flexibility and reduced stress
Another, recently-availible benefit of taking a study hall is the opportunity to take a GOA course offered at Providence Day GOA, which stands for Global Online Academy, is a nonprofit organization providing online courses to students in a multitude of subjects that typically aren’t offered at high schools Because much of the work is asynchronous, many students taking a GOA course also take a study hall so they can complete GOA coursework during the day, just like they would for typical in-person classes In addition to allowing students to study niche topics, GOA courses and study halls teach students crucial life skills such as independence, time management, responsibility, and more

NATIONAL GIRL SCOUT DAY
BYSAMICOHEN
Every year around February and March, Girl Scouts sell cookies to earn money for donations for local institutions that help those in need Through their donation efforts, the Girl Scouts also get hands-on experience with entrepreneurship skills and public speaking
Starting around 1917, in Muskogee Oklahoma, a Girl Scout group called the Mistletoe Troop baked cookies from home and then started to sell them at their school’s cafeteria to help fund their club Other troops looked into what they were doing and decided to follow suit In the 1920s, troops went door-to-door selling cookies Many troops and clubs around the nation started taking note of this small expenditure Over time, the selling of these cookies grew and became a famous tradition done yearly
Girl Scouts sell a variety of cookies such as Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, and Do-SiDos, just to name a few Typically, the most popular Girl Scout cookies are Thin Mints Studies show they make up around 25 percent of all cookie sales.

SUPER BOWL RECAP
BYKATIEMAESWEENEY
After facing some recent tragedies, New Orleans hosted a successful Super Bowl, attracting over 125,000 visitors The event was not only a massive cultural celebration but also an economic boost for the city, roughly contributing $1 billion to the local economy
While the Kansas City Chiefs were predicted to win, the Philadelphia Eagles held a steady lead throughout the game Quarterback Jalen Hurts was one of the stand out players of the night, leading the Eagles to an 18-point victory. Despite his best efforts, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes continually disappointed throughout the game.
The halftime show was one of the highlights of this event, starring Kendrick Lamar and featuring SZA Coming straight off of his five Grammy wins, Kendrick Lamar gave a groundbreaking performance This performance featured a combination of music and storytelling with underlying messages about American history Lamar highlighted the hardships the African American community has faced in the US that the average viewer may not have picked up on
There were many underlying symbols throughout the performance; at one point the dancers formed an American flag and Kendrick was in the middle of them This has been interpreted as Kendrick highlighting on the division of our nation. While this was symbolic genius, the composition overall was also considered a masterpiece by many. While the organizers had announced that SZA was going to be a guest, the overall consensus was that her performance brought this to a whole new level There was much debate as to whether Kendrick was going to play his hit track, “Not Like Us,” which he did in fact play Due to the recent petitions circulating in the media demanding Kendrick no longer should be allowed to play Not Like Us because of the pedophilia allegations directed at Drake Kendrick had no legal objection to playing “Not Like Us ”
The Super Bowl LIX delivered a compelling experience that had monumental pop culture moments The Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and Kendrick Lamar's groundbreaking performance led to an exciting night As usual, the Super Bowl not only delivered a football game, but it was a cultural moment that united fans, athletes, and artists from across the nation.

RECENT AIRCRAFT COLLISIONS
BYSAHANASHAH
On the evening of January 29, 2025, at approximately 9 p m EST, a catastrophic mid-air collision occurred over the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., resulting in the loss of 67 lives.
American Eagle Flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines, was on its final approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after departing from Wichita, Kansas Concurrently, a U S Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was conducting a training mission The two aircraft collided approximately half a mile short of runway 33, leading to both crashing into the Potomac River Tragically, all 64 passengers and crew aboard the CRJ-700 jet, along with the three crew members of the helicopter, perished in the accident
First responders, including rescue boats and fire crews, swiftly arrived at the crash site, undertaking search and recovery operations Despite their efforts, there were no survivors Among the victims were 28 figure skaters and their families returning from a developmental camp in Wichita, Kansas, as well as seven friends on a hunting trip.
The tragedy has deeply affected communities nationwide The figure skating world, in particular, is mourning the loss of young talents and esteemed coaches Nancy Kerrigan, speaking at the Skating Club of Boston where several victims were members tearfully honored the deceased, highlighting the profound impact on the tight-knit skating community

This devastating collision serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of stringent aviation safety protocols and adequate staffing in air traffic control operations As airspace becomes increasingly congested, especially around major hubs like Washington, D C , ensuring robust safety measures is paramount to prevent such tragedies
Preliminary investigations have highlighted several concerning factors:
Air Traffic Control Staffing: On the night of the collision, the air traffic control tower at Reagan National Airport was reportedly understaffed. A single controller was managing both helicopter operations and fixed-wing aircraft a role typically assigned to two controllers. This staffing decision has come under scrutiny, especially given the complex airspace around Washington, D C
ADS-B System Inactivation: The Black Hawk helicopter was equipped with an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, designed to enhance situational awareness by transmitting real-time location data However, reports indicate that this system was not activated during the flight, potentially contributing to the lack of awareness leading up to the collision
Altitude Deviation: Investigations suggest that the helicopter was operating approximately 200 feet above its designated altitude at the time of the collision. This deviation may have been a critical factor in the mid-air encounter.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched comprehensive investigations into the incident While a full report may take over a year to finalize, these agencies are expected to issue interim recommendations aimed at enhancing aviation safety The broader aviation community, along with affected families, eagerly awaits these findings, hoping they will lead to meaningful reforms that prevent future tragedies
This incident underscores the imperative for continuous evaluation and improvement of aviation safety measures to protect the lives of passengers and crew members alike

A REVIEW OF WICKED
BYLAURENNEWMAN
The world of Oz and the premise of Wicked dates back more than 100 years
The movie is adapted from the broadway musical, which the original book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West inspired This book is based on the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, which is based on L Frank Baum’s various books written in the 1910s on The World of Oz
There’s a reason this world has been built upon so much over the years: it’s truly wonderful This movie did not disappoint; it gave us a faithful adaptation with beautiful voices and incredible acting, as well as making an important story more accessible
In taking a story from a live theatrical setting to a film, there are many opportunities for change. In film, there is simply more time as there are multiple takes and more power given to the director CGI is used for effects, and run time is longer, in this case, because the story was split into two parts
However, in live theater, there is an art to suspending disbelief and making storytelling come to life, even with less immersive settings. There is still room for elaborate set design, but it has to be used intentionally In the movie, more elaborate sets were created, like the Emerald City and Shiz University in addition to adding more intimate scenes and detailed character building
Many artistic liberties taken, however, are not specific to the film medium; instead, they’re just different directions taken from the broadway musical that give the story new life For example, in Glinda’s standout number “Popular,” there were changes in pacing to the music, and an extended riff to let Grande’s interpretation of the bright, bubbly character shine through, but it was still undoubtedly the same song as the original
The world of Oz and the premise of Wicked dates back over 100 years
In a similar manner, in the exhilarating finale number, “Defying Gravity,” Erivo performed a different ending riff than Idina Menzel, and there was a pause for added dialogue, but there wasn’t much changed in this song or the rest of the soundtrack The plotline of animal oppression, Elphaba’s unwavering kindness, and Glinda’s insecurity were more heavily emphasized in this movie; many added scenes and moments aided this such as flashbacks to Elphaba’s childhood that include mentions of her nurse, Dulcibear, who was a prominent character in the original book This moment shows Elphaba’s compassion for animals, which gives deeper meaning to her outrage at their oppression The dance scene in the middle of “Dancing Through Life” provided meaningful character development, allowing audiences to see the development of Glinda and Elphaba’s friendship In the number, which takes place in the sparkling, bustling Emerald City, “One Short Day,” there is added exposition to better explain the history of the Grimmery, the magical spellbook of Oz
The Wicked film adaptation of the first musical act did an incredible job of highlighting the major themes mentioned in the original book and musical and brought forward small moments between characters that worked beautifully toward the main plot
There is no doubt that the second part of the movie will continue to illuminate the true magic in this beloved story, which certainly goes beyond levitating broomsticks and talking animals.
The true magic in this beloved story goes beyond levitating broomsticks and talking animals

HOW PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT AFFECTS YOUR ACADEMICS
BYCHLOEMCGOVERN
The art of playing and learning to play an instrument can improve your academic performance and achievements Developing the skills that are required to play an instrument is also associated with multiple other cognitive abilities and academic achievements The daily practice and work that most musicians put into learning to play their instrument and maintaining their skills increases the advancement of personal characteristics like persistence, motivation, and determination, which all play major roles in a student’s academic performance
Another crucial skill gained is executive functioning: the ability to adapt to unexpected situations. This is something humans are not born with, but it can be acquired. Since playing instruments is a complicated neurological skill, musicians often have high executive functioning. Playing an instrument also increases mental flexibility and attention to detail; it also strengthens the brain This is because when playing an instrument, you are utilizing every part of your brain to complete the task
Scientists conducted an experiment which compared the brain activity of people performing math problems or reading, listening to music, and playing an instrument They found that between those reading, solving math problems, and listening to music, the people who listened to music had a significantly higher amount of neurotransmitters The Merit School of Music claims that, “this happens when cognitive brain and sensory changes are triggered, our brain must synchronize this flow of information.” Between the group of people listening to music and the group playing instruments, scientists found that the group playing instruments had an even higher number of neurotransmitters.
Chip Staley, Merit’s Wind Symphony Director, has said that “there is not a time in musical activity that you are not engaging all areas of the brain ” As one learns to play music, it strengthens the brain When learning, your brain learns to make its different systems work together faster, and applies those skills to other aspects of learnIng and academics As these skills improve, so will your academic performance and achievements
STADIUM SECURITY: CONCERNS ABOUT NEW ORLEANS SUPER BOWL
BYRYANHARRIS
Just over a month after an alarming terrorist attack that killed 14 people less than a mile away from Caesars Superdome, the same stadium hosted Super Bowl LIX on February 9. The attack caused the Sugar Bowl, one of the biggest college football games of the year, to be postponed Adding on to the thousands of people who attended the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras which is also widely celebrated in New Orleans took place at the same time Every year, around one million people attend Mardi Gras from the February 3 until March 4.
The attack on January 1 caused and will continue to cause concern for citizens traveling and living in New Orleans during this time The terrorist attack showed flaws in public security and safety in New Orleans.
In collaboration with the NFL and other organizations, New Orleans worked to improve and develop the security throughout the town so that people could feel safe roaming the streets attending the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras. New Orleans police superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick reported that “No traffic will be allowed and we are going to be blocking every single intersection that feeds into Bourbon Street ” This allowed for lively pregame celebrations highlighted in nearly every Super Bowl pregame show, and it made it safe for figures like Taylor Swift, Donald Trump, and Leonardo DiCaprio to enjoy the game in-person
Although safety wasn’t perfect as one man was detained for making it onto Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show stage the 2,900 police officers and other local officials worked to put on an eventful Super Bowl weekend that resulted in zero major security incidents during or after the game, according to WDSU

THE NBA’S BLOCKBUSTER TRADE
BYKOSTAPATEL
On February 1, 2025, the Dallas Mavericks astonished sports fans around the world by announcing that they had traded star point guard Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for center Anthony Davis At just 25 years old, Doncic is a five-time NBA All Star, former scoring champion, and even led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season Also given to Dallas was guard Max Christie and a 2029 first round pick, while the Lakers also acquired Markieff Morris and Maxi Kleber What made this trade especially shocking, though, was the fact that no news or rumors had been leaked in the days leading up to this historic trade
Reactions from the fans of the Mavs and Lakers have been quite mixed In general, Mavericks fans are extremely upset and have gone on to threaten Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison NBA fans have never had a great relationship with Harrison, as he is infamous for mishandling Nike’s brand-deal pitch to Stephen Curry (it is rumored that Harrison did not know how to pronounce Curry’s first name). Mavericks fans have even gone as far as to hold protests and rallies around the arena, and many fans have been ejected from there mid-game. In the first home game without Luka Doncic, two fans were escorted out of American Airlines Center for holding signs that read “FIRE NICO!”
However, many viewers believe these fans have a point CBS Sports gave the Mavericks a trade grade of an F, noting that the return package was not nearly worth one of the best players and rising stars in the NBA On the other hand, the Los Angeles Lakers were given an A+, receiving praise from many media outlets More notably, their odds to win the NBA Championship spiked from +3700 (11th in the league) to +1400 (6th in league) Although critics certainly have made their pick for the “winning team” in this trade, both teams appear satisfied with their results and optimistic for a bright future ahead
