Both Sides of The Invisible Line describes my personal experiences as a police officer in metropolitan St. Louis, Missouri, and proposes concrete steps that would lead to trust and collaboration between people and the police. I share my own journey in order to provide insight on the challenges Black males face in America, the challenges I continued to face as a Black male in a blue uniform, and the dangerous stereotypes that shape negative contacts with the police. I offer suggestions about how to rethink the purpose and uses of police, and recommend giving the community a voice to determine what, exactly, they need the police for. I envision a police department that is intrinsically embedded in communities – like schools, churches, and libraries; places where people feel safe, gather in fellowship, and find ways to help and support each other.
