Philanthropist | Activist | Future President
Mari Copeny, known globally as Little Miss Flint, is a 17-year-old from Flint, Michigan. She first entered the public spotlight when her letter to President Obama about the Flint water crisis prompted his visit to the city, ultimately leading to $100 million in relief. Despite her young age, Mari has significantly impacted the dialogue around environmental racism, confronting the nation with the realities faced by victims of state negligence.
In 2017, Mari became a national youth ambassador for the Women’s March on Washington and the National Climate March. She is dedicated to preventing bullying through her work with Trendsetters Productions and is a member of the Flint Youth Justice League. Mari also served as the chairwoman of the Kid Box board in 2019 and works with Eighteen by 18, a youth organization founded by her mentor Yara Shahidi. She has spoken twice at the March for Science about the impact of the Flint water crisis on her community.
Mari has raised over $700,000 for her Flint Kids projects, providing over 19,000 backpacks with school supplies, organizing annual Christmas events with thousands of toys, distributing hundreds of Easter baskets, hosting movie screenings, and conducting other community-focused events. Her book project ensures local children receive books by authors of color, and her Dear Flint Kids letter project has garnered thousands of supportive messages from around the world.
Mari has also raised over $250,000 and distributed more than a million bottles of water. Most notably, she partnered with Hydroviv to create her own water filter, raising over $700,000 to produce and distribute filters to communities facing toxic drinking water.
Featured in Teen Vogue, The Guardian, VICE, TIME, Refinery 29, The Washington Post, NBC News, Rewire, Buzzfeed, and more, Mari continues to be a vocal opponent of environmental racism. Looking ahead, she plans to run for president in 2044.
