I have known Victor for four years and can say I know him very well. I've had the pleasure to share classes with Victor throughout high school, work on group presentations and projects, as well as take part in student panel information sessions to Latinx parents and students interested in applying to our school.
Freshman year, Victor was a shystudent and would only talk to me about our math homework and the way he understood complex equations. Although he's always been willing to stand out in class as a bright student, it wasn't until Junior year that I noticed him become more outspoken and willing to take social and academic risks.
Junior year second semester, we had almost all of our college classes at North Carolina Central university together. I enjoyed working with him because he was great at communicating his ideas and always supported me to go the extra mile in everything we did. We've worked on two short movies for a class together and I admire his patience and detailed–oriented personality.
Victor is the bravest person I know. Our first semester of senior year was extremely difficult for him because as much as he wants to go to college, he knew that he couldn't afford it. As a DACA student, there were only a limited number of scholarships he qualified for. On occasions when we had lunch together, he would breakdown in tears when we spoke about college. This did not get any after President Trump terminated the DACA program. However, he always had courage and fought his way to find his only hope: The Golden Doors Scholarship. He knew that this scholarship was the key to his future and worked day and night assuring that everything on his application was perfect. He never gave up. He knew that there were very few options, but never once did he not think about not going to college. College is his biggest dream and he didn't let anything stop him. After submitting his application, he was one of only 50 students to receive this full ride scholarship.
Victor's persistence prevailed even when he thought his life was falling apart. It's a characteristic that makes him who he is and the reason I look up to him as a student and human being.
Victor is also well outspoken and willing to defend his

My life as a student has been a fairly good one. I've received good grades throughout all my years of high school and pride myself as an intelligent individual. But my individual ability to grow and learn has been always changing and shifting as I have grown. I think that currently, I am at a low point in my mindset and learning ability, but there is hope on the horizon. This essay will explore the growth and mindset of Will Roser, and how I can grow as a learner, friend, and individual. As a student, I have some habits that I rely on, both good and bad. I am usually a good student, receiving above average grades and I am moderately happy with them. My strength is that I always get everything done on time. I never have an excuse because my work is always done. I pride myself on that fact. And although that may seem like a good quality, the fact that I procrastinate so much does affect how good that work may be. So yes, I always finish my work which is alwaysa good thing, but it may be at the expense of my sleep schedule. I tend to do most of my work the day before, despite telling myself over and over again that it needs to be done earlier. Luckily I have hope for my habits as I am still young. I still have to work on myprocrastination but I think that I can improve as long as I start to see the benefits of starting work early. As William James says in his essayHabit, "The period between twenty and thirty is the critical one in the formation of intellectual and

Motivation in Schools
The topic I originally planned to look into for my Action Research Paper was the affect of reward systems on a student's academic performance. My idea was that a student's performance could be influenced by the presence of a reward system. I was interested in seeing if certain subject areas were more likely to use such systems than other subject areas. I strived to see if a student's academic performance could mean more than just their exam scores and ability to complete assignments. I wished to see if a reward system could change the way a student was motivated in the classroom; to see if their overall attitude could be changed. I also thought to look into their attendance in classes...show more content...
In that class, we used two textbooks which I felt fit my topics needs. The chapters on motivation proved useful to my paper, and even gave me ideas to look further into. In the chapter, it discussed a student's need for affiliation and approval. By wanting to be a part of a group, a student might be motivated to perform in a certain way, in order to gain entrance to that group and in turn gain their approval. The idea of achievement motivation was also brought up, in which students need to excel only for their own sake without external rewards.
I found that Alfie Kohn, author of Punished by Rewards and many other books oneducation, feels that achievement motivation is most important to a student truly learning. He feels that authentic experiences in the classroom can only occur when the teacher leaves out all words of praise and punishment. He feels that praise can often be empty in nature, and in turn could actually do more damage to a student than good. Punishments are also damaging, because students could be turned off to learning because they constantly feel threatened by the teacher. He feels that if we want students to take responsibility for their learning, it is up to us to give them responsibilities. They will in turn learn to make good decisions by having the opportunity to decide what happens to them every

How to be a Good College Student
College is a competitive environment; in order to succeed in it a student needs certain skills. Those skills can only be learned. A college professor mentioned that there five basic rules that need to be followed in order to become a good student: study, do all the homework and the assigned reading, attend class, and, most importantly, develop self–discipline and time management 1. In the following lines, a detailed analysis of those different steps will be done. So, let's get started. First, we mentioned study. A good student has to do study everyday. Study involves reading the textbooks, understand them, be able to explain it to others and sometimes memorize the most important concepts. As a...show more content... The textbooks are usually large. The lecture giving by the teacher usually is a summary of the textbook. When revising for the exam, it will be a lot easier for the student to cover the material. Finally, we also mentioned the importance of time management and self–discipline. A student will manage very well his/her time by identifying best time for studying, using distributed learning and practice means study in shorter time blocks with shorts breaks between, reducing distractions which can waste time, making room for entertainment and relaxation, making sure there is time to sleep and eat properly and try to combine activities. For example, if a student is spending time in the Laundromat, he/she can bring his psychology book to read. Managing time takes self discipline. The same professor cited before said that "people who seem to have less difficulty with self–discipline probably have simply had more practice at it". So, practice is what it takes to have self–discipline.
In conclusion, it is clear that being a good college student is not an easy task. It required good study habit, class attendance, time management and self–discipline. It is not easy but it worth the hard work. Because, as Jerome R. Breitenbach wrote, "the education you receive in college, and the attitude you develop, will guide you for the rest of your life. Your grades will be especially important in landing your first job, or when applying to graduate

Describe yourself as a student and also your aspirations for the future. Please include examples from your personal academic and non–academic experiences.
A sophomore at Downtown Magnets High School, I demonstrate passion in my education, ambition in fulfilling my personal and academic goals, and am an explorative student. My passion for learning is the result of my mindset, in that aside from finding education a necessity, it is enjoyable, challenging, and beneficial in fulfilling my future aspirations. For example, I find my Honors Advanced Mathematics class my most unique course. It builds upon my ability to critically think, present data or information, and understand higher–level math at a rapid pace. In particular, it is the ability to solve real–world situations and the underlying mystery mathematicians have yet to solve that intrigues me to continue learning. The class expects much of me, but I am aware that it is preparing me for college– and university–level math while providing me with the skills to pursue a career in Architectural/ StructuralEngineering. Ambitious, I set objectives for myself and arrange to accomplish and excel in the process. For instance, I participated in my middle school's academic decathlon with a chance to represent my school in the mathematics single–subject exam. In doing so, I attempted to score a near perfect to perfect score. While the competition did not end the way I expected, I successfully gained a flawless score on the questions

What makes a good teacher? Essay
In my opinion, a good teacher should be one who puts her heart into teaching. This is because only by doing so will the students feel their passion and hard work. When a teacher strives hard for the students, students will put in their effort as well. If a teacher dislikes her job, goes to classes in a bad mood, her teaching would also be affected and students would not be able to enjoy lessons as well.
Another point that makes a good teacher would be his/her patience. Teachers should not get upset or even worse, give up on the students who are not so strong in their studies. Instead, they should have the patience to slowly coach them, give them extra lessons, and find different ways to encourage them. Let them know that the teacher...show more content...

"You must not give up. I want to let you know that even if you're facing so many problems, and feel like there's no one to talk to, I'll be here for you. Everyone else might want to be the sun that lights up your life, but I rather be the moon that guides you through your darkest hours. Let's strive hard and work toward our goal together!" This was what my high school teacher told me 10 years ago and I have remembered it until now, and will remember it for the next 10 years and so on.
I was once a problematic kid who mixed with bad company and flunk tests. I never thought about what I was going to do the next day, what more when I grew up. Of course when I was younger, I had lots of dreams. I wanted to set up my own company, I wanted to be a teacher, I wanted to be able to drive an airplane and the list went on. But as the years went by, they became less insignificant to me and soon, I forgot every single one of those dreams and goals. I got to a new school and knew friends who smoke and took drugs. My grades started dropping from "A" to fails. But I did not care. I could not be bothered by then. I went partying every night and got home drunk. What was the point of studying? My parents are

Introduction I have enjoyed the opportunity to be an active student in this class. I have been delighted to be able to speak in open discussions during lecture and I wish that more professors practiced this method. The objective of this paper is for me to demonstrate an understanding of my learning experiences through the information that I have learned over the duration of this course. I have chosen to focus on my experience as a college student as the main topic of my self–assessment. Many topic discussions in class have given me insight to the way that humans obtain and process information. The class sessions on confirmation basis, critical thinking and sleep were all very relatable to a returning college student like me. In the previous assessment, I discussed these key elements in detail regarding how I maintained a balance of normality in my life. In this paper, I will explain self–regulation and how the intrinsic method, extrinsic method, adaptation, and self–actualization all relate to learning as a college student. Past School Experience As anyone could imagine making the decision to return to school was not an easy one. I had been out of college since December of 2011. The last college that I attended was the University of Phoenix. I attended the ground campus in Sandy Springs, GA and the hour commute was killing me. Although I only attended school once a week the amount of time that was required for me to put into my class assignments was horrendous. I was

Using flash cards, web sites, computers, or just a pencil and paper are all great ways to study. Having an answer sheet to refer to, and look over when your done will also help study and learning skills because it can help you see what you did wrong and need to fix. Having a study group or club before big tests, like exams or diplomas, will help you have more fun with your friends when studying. Also study at home with adults to help you. Having friends to study with will increase your enjoyment of learning, and learning to learn. Doing homework right after you get home from school is good because you might still remember what to do and what you need to study. Doing homework in the morning can make it less likely for you to sleep or enjoy your day. If you enjoy writing or reading a job may be based on writing in a future date, but if you dislike reading you might want a job such as a doctor.

Students Expect High Grades Essays
Like any student, college students always want the easiest way out and still attain a good grade. That was basically my experience in high school. Teachers just gave credit to assignments that seemed like the students put a lot of effort into it. I actually gave advice to underclassmen by encouraging them to do the work regardless if it is right. I would also receive credit for things that had nothing to do with materials learning in class. If I had a graduation speech I would really thank tissue boxes for increasing my grade and passing. In high school, I would slack off all the time and procrastinated everything. Teachers seemed like they did not care and did not encourage me to stop those bad habits. Unfortunately, today I still...show more content...
Colleges are providing chances that not everyone in America can attain, but students still do not find it a reason to go through tedious essays, projects and studying. The author even calls the acts of college students as "not only self–destructive, but socially destructive" (Wiesenfel). Since today's pupils are Americas future, we cannot just prestige them if they received a C– in math and science. These performances should not be acceptable because ones personal fail can lead to a bigger group fail. Overall, Weisenfel provides a good reasoning from these points. Going more in depth in Wiesenfels article, what really is the motivation for students wanting andbegging for higher grades? When I was in high school one of my priorities was to just get out of there. High school students just want to go to college, and college students just want to head to grad school and get a steady career. To keep progressing onto the next academic level one must be able to have a passing grade which is a C. The minimum grade is all what California State Universities and other four year universities ask for. Also, one of the most helpful ways to pay for college is through scholarships. According to some scholarships many ask higher than a specific grade. Additionally several college students just "think" they deserve a higher grade. In the article "Students Expect High Grades", it states that "students surveyed said

At the same time, if a person does all of these things, but shows a bit of initiative to gain more knowledge of the job, they may see an opportunity to slightly move up in the company. The latter is my situation. My experience and knowledge of my department and its systems have afforded me the opportunity to move up within the department over the past five years, but I'm beginning to see a limit of how far those skills alone will allow me to climb.
