Community Speed Watch

T

HE CSW team now have another two members, one from Probus and one from Tresillian, where it is hoped we can do a speed watch soon. On our last outing, with four people in hi-viz jackets it was difficult to be discreet. However, it had the desired effect, traffic started to slow down! We monitored 157 cars, and despite our presence, several were slightly over the speed limit. To have had none over the limit is our aim. Keeping to the speed limit only adds a second to your journey, isn’t it worth it to arrive safely at your destination? Stay safe Probus Speed Watch Coordinator

A message from Rev Church services Sunday 5th 9:30 am Connect Joachim UEEN Elizabeth has Q served our country for an unbelievable 70

years. Her dedication to our country has been truly remarkable. It is a life that has also been dedicated to serving God. Her faith is well known. Indeed, in 1952 in her first Christmas broadcast, she made a prayer request to the nation: ‘Pray for me … that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.’ 70 years on, churches up and down the country are continuing to pray for the queen and her unique relationship with the Church of England. It is the queen’s faith that has supported her throughout her reign. Indeed, the theme of her coronation and her entire reign has been one of service. The queen most often refers to the story of the Good Samaritan as an example of the service she seeks to offer to our nation. The story of the man who came across a stranger who had been beaten up on the road. The Good Samaritan binds up the stranger’s wounds and takes him to the nearest inn, and pays for his care. In 1985 the queen said this of the Good Samaritan that it ‘reminds us of our duty to our neighbour. We should try to follow Christ’s clear instruction at the end of that story: ‘Go and do thou likewise’. The queen’s life of service to the nation is one that is characterised by her faith. We would all do well to learn from her example. Joachim Foot Team Rector, Probus, Ladock, Grampound with Creed and St. Erme 8 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 268

Church Clock repaired

J

ONATHAN Keam reports that the Probus Church Clock is back in action after a major repair. The clock has two electric winders and the one for the clock mechanism stopped working after the gearbox failed. The failed unit was removed and shipped to a specialist company in Cumbria for repair. Jonathan and Andy McCartney currently keep an eye on the 100-year old clock as it needs regular maintenance and adjustment. Neither are currently very mobile and are appealing for volunteers to assist with this important task. You’d need to willing to to climb the spiral stairs of the church tower and necessary training will be provided.

Raymond ‘Ray’ Smith

R

AY was born in Foxhole and was educated at St. Stephen School.

He worked at Western Ex, ECLP then St Ives Print in Roche. His hobbies included golf, fishing and chatting. He loved the sea and frequently visited fish markets as he enjoyed seafood. He met his partner Ann at Truro Railway Club and they moved to Probus in 2000. He often was seen washing his car on his drive and just chatting to passers-by on Fore Street. He passed away on Thursday 14th April, aged 72, leaving Ann and two daughters, Hannah and Natalie.

Local fisherman doing good

W

ELL done to Probus fisherman Chris Gill, owner/skipper of the charter fishing boat Aquila that operates out of Mevagissey. Chris provides discounted fishing trips on Fridays in return for his customers leaving behind the fish they catch. He then donates the catch to the community larder in the village. Spokesperson Eleanor McCartney said ‘We have been delighted to receive such generous donations to the larder. Fresh quality food is so important for people to have access to, especially children. However meat, fish and fresh food are difficult for many to afford at the moment and we are very pleased we can offer this to local families facing food crisis at this time’.

ANY thanks to Fred Taylor from Tresillian for his picture of the steam train Duchess of Sutherland traversing the Tregarne Viaduct on 28th April. Built originally in 1938, and restored in 2001, it is painted in London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) crimson lake livery and classified as a 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive. The Tregarne Viaduct (50.287475°N 4.987578°W) was opened in September 1901 replacing the original I K Brunel designed wooden viaduct built in 1859, the granite piers of which are still visible. The viaduct is on the very pleasant walk from Probus to Tresillian, described as a circular walk in the February 2021 edition of Probus News. It’s still available online https://issuu.com/probusnews/docs/ probus_news_february_2021

ROM guidance given by Dame Jenny Harries, Chief Executive of UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

‘As we learn to live with COVID-19, we encourage people to keep following simple steps to help keep themselves and others safe. The pandemic is not over and how the virus will develop over time remains uncertain. COVID-19 still poses a real risk to many of us, particularly with high case rates and hospitalisations. That is why it is sensible to wear a mask in crowded, enclosed spaces, keep indoor spaces ventilated and stay away from others if you have any symptoms of a respiratory illness. ‘Vaccination remains the best way to protect us all from severe disease and hospitalisation. If you have not yet come forward for your primary or booster I would urge you to do so straight away as the NHS vaccine programme is there to

help and the sooner you are vaccinated the sooner you and your family and friends will be protected. ‘UKHSA guidance sets out that people with symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19, and who have a high temperature or do not feel well, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with others. Those who are asked – or choose to test – and get a positive COVID-19 result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with

other people for 5 days following the day of their positive result. ‘Children and young people who are asymptomatic, choose to take a COVID-19 test and receive a positive test result are advised to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 3 days after the day of the test. ‘There will be some symptomatic testing available for certain high-risk groups and settings, including for those who are at highest risk of becoming seriously unwell and who are eligible for COVID-19 monoclonal antibody and antiviral treatments. ‘The guidance states that it is particularly important that a person with symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19, avoids close contact with people whose immune system means that they are at higher risk of serious

illness. If a person has tested positive for COVID-19 they should avoid those people who are at higher risk of serious illness for a 10-day period. ‘Anyone who needs to leave their home whilst they have symptoms of a respiratory infection such as COVID-19, or within 5 days following the day of their positive test, should take important precautions to minimise the chance of passing on their infection.

‘Such precautions could include: •

wearing a well-fitting face covering or a face mask • avoiding crowded or enclosed spaces such as public transport, • large social gatherings and enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces • exercising outdoors and away from others • always remembering good hand and respiratory hygiene ‘For the wider population who don’t have symptoms of COVID-19, or other respiratory infection or a positive COVID-19 test, UKHSA advises sensible public health behaviours that can help to reduce the spread of infections and protect those around them. These include getting vaccinated, ventilating indoor spaces, wearing a face covering or mask in certain situations and keeping up good hand and respiratory hygiene.’ June 2022 | 11

Acoustic open mic at Probus Comrades Club By Ian Tumilty

M

ONDAY 25th April saw another hugely enjoyable and varied acoustic sing-around at Probus Comrades Club. Blues, americana, folk, 60s and 70s, rock, Cornish and self -penned songs were all on the agenda. Two of our local talented wordsmiths shared their musings: serious, humorous and political offerings were all given. In all some 14 performers took part, mainly regular contributors. Dave Meggs became the latest Probus open mic virgin! He regaled us with an a capella Cream number and Mack the Knife, awesome! Three Robins were present, one performing and two in the audience! Richie, our resident harmonica player, was even later than usual but still managed to fit in a few bluesy numbers, ably supported by the rest of us. Thanks as usual to Bryan and the club for the venue and their support. We use the upstairs function room, which is airy and spacious. Covid is still with us, and many of our regular performers and listeners have not yet felt able to come back. Our next open mic will be on Monday 30th May, 7 pm to 7:30 pm start. Speak to Tim or Ian if you would like to know more (details on page 6). As it’s the Jubilee week, you may fancy a relaxing starting point, pleasant words and songs, a bit of banter and good -natured abuse, even the odd celebrity, (we have one or two in Probus don’t you know!) The calm before the storm, as it were... 16 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 268

The Probus Club of Probus

Visit to the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre (CAHC)

I

N May, twelve members of The Probus Club of Probus had a fascinating and informative guided tour of the various aircraft on display at CAHC. Staffed by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers, the site provides a rare opportunity to get ‘up close to’ and even inside, some iconic British aircraft, from fast jets like the two Tornados, Hawker Hunter and remarkable English Electric Lightning with its ridiculously narrow wheels to the huge VC10 tanker similar to those involved in refuelling aircraft on their transit to the Falkland Islands. One of the Probus group was ex BA Captain Dave Meggs, who needed little encouragement to resume the left-hand seat of the VC10 and settled in to explain the mass of instruments and controls on

the aircraft. It was interesting to see the tiny old-fashioned cockpit monitor used by the refuelling crew to guide aircraft up to the relatively tiny refuelling ‘baskets’ beneath its huge ‘whale tail’. From a relatively recent aircraft the group went on to experience the spartan interior of the Vickers Valetta, a derivative of the wartime Wellington Bomber, used for navigation and bomb aimer training. With an account of how the CAHC came into existence, Centre Director Richard Spencer-Breeze went on to explain how many of the rare and incredibly valuable aircraft on display were provided and used in a partnership arrangement with a specialist company to train staff from all over Europe in the recovery of damaged aircraft, which has placed CAHC at the forefront of training sites, not only in UK but also in countries much further afield. Right: Captain Dave Meggs at the controls of a VC10. Below the Probus group with CAHC Director Richard Spencer-Breeze

The Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 1952 - 2022

June 2022 | 23

Platinum Jubilee preparations

I

N preparation for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, a series of workshops were held in the village hall in May, with enthusiastic volunteers painting commemorative pebbles and making bunting in shades of red, white and blue. Look out for the results of their efforts around the village over the Jubilee weekend!

Knitted and sewn bunting ready to be hung along Fore Street. We aimed to make 170 meters for bunting but due to the tremendous support from the community we are hoping that there is enough to deck out all of Fore Street. The committee are looking for volunteers to hang the bunting on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May. Meet at Probus Village Hall at 10 am.

We wish you health and happiness. William Sutherland, Vice chair, Probus Parish Council 2nd June 2022

Probus ‘Jubilee Rocks’

Quiches and Cake competition

O

A

VER the past month, adults and kids alike have been busy painting rocks (a few examples below) and on the last day of the school term (Wednesday 25th May) these will be hidden around the village. We encourage everyone to take a walk around the village to see if they can find any. If you find one, take a photo of it, post it on Probus Platinum Jubilee Facebook page and then hide it somewhere else. If you wish to take part in the competition, collect as many rocks as you can and bring them to the village hall on Friday 3rd June.

SPECIFIC recipe* for ‘Quiche Lorraine’ or Victoria sandwich can be found on the Probus Platinum Jubilee Facebook page or by emailing probusplatinumjubilee@gmail.com. The competition is intended as a fully inclusive event so if you need support getting the ingredients, contact the community larder (see page 4) who will ensure no families miss out. * A ‘free-from’ category is also acceptable so adapt the recipe to suit your needs.

The Shindig is back!

DATE for your diaries: after two highly successful events last year, the Probus Shindig and Vintage Rally is taking place again from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd July. Several steam rallies in Cornwall have been cancelled this year, so it’s likely that Probus will see an even bigger array of vintage vehicles than in the past. In addition there’ll be live music every evening, as well as a performance by Roche Brass Band on the evening of Wednesday 29 June. Tickets for both the rally and the live entertainment are available either on the day or in advance from the Spar Shop and Probus School Filling Station. All profits will go to Treliske Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Letters to the Editor

website already knows my address? Then I noticed that the text message came from a mobile number. Oh heck. I’ve been had. Feeling very worried and a bit stupid for being so gullible, I contacted my bank and went through the process of stopping my card and blocking any future payments on it.

Dear Editor I fell for a scam, and I would like to warn others of how easy it is to be fooled by some very clever tricks. I was feeling fairly unwell with a very heavy cold, and with thoughts of COVID-19 still in our heads I was wondering if I should do a test. Then I received a text message... Without giving it too much thought I clicked on the link and was taken to a page that looked exactly like the NHS web pages. I was asked for my address and then advised that I would be sent a free PCR test kit, but would need to pay 99p for postage. I then filled in my bank account details so that this payment could be taken. Job done - I will receive a kit within the next few days.

I felt very relieved, but this was not the end of it. Two days later I had a call, apparently from my bank fraud department, asking if I had tried to make an Amazon payment for £275 on this card. I had not, and I was then asked to go into my mobile banking app, whilst on my mobile phone, to check that no unauthorised purchases had taken place. I was not so gullible this time and said I wasn’t comfortable doing that, but would check my account and ring them back. I did this, and when I spoke with the fraud department they had not tried to contact me. I was right not to access my banking app whilst in the phone. If I had done this the fraudsters could have had access to my bank accounts. I am writing this because I’ve always thought myself to be very cautious and aware of the possibility of scams. So beware, there are some wicked people out there always looking for new ways to take advantage of unsuspecting people like us. Name withheld

Only then did I begin to wonder! I thought the government had stopped doing Track and Trace? Surely the NHS 36 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 268

Editor: Thanks very much for sharing this incident with us. Probus Club members recently had a presentation from the SW Regional Organised Crime Unit, and were each given a booklet The Little Book of BIG Scams. It’s an interesting read, giving an insight into a host of different scams. I have a spare copy if anyone would like to look at it.

Dear Editor, As you may be aware, sadly the Probus Ladies Group has had to fold. We are left with a pretty new wifi sound system which we purchased to aid our speakers when we couldn’t manage to use the sound system in the hall. We are happy to donate it to a group in the hope that it could be of some use. If you could use it, or know somebody who could, please let either me or Pat Gluyas know as soon as possible. It is only a shopping bag size but it is in the way! Most of us get scam messages, malicious texts, emails or calls on a regular basis, and it only takes one moment when your guard is down to open yourself up to a world of trouble. The booklet contains tips to help protect us, but I thought it worth replicating one section below:

Best wishes Tess Bowen Dear Editor, Thanks to the article you published in May 2021 magazine relating to my craft group, I got two enquiries, who became members of the group. Since then the group has grown to eight members who attend regularly each month. For more details see the Facebook page Probus Craft Group, or call me. Suzanne Downes, 07970 781720.

There is a host of useful information, tips and tools to help protect against online fraud on www.takefive-stopfraud. org.uk. The website was created by 300 members of the UK Finance industry, and is worth checking out. Finally, if you haven’t done so already, it’s worth reporting this to the National Action Fraud www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040. June 2022 | 37

Margaret Richards

M

ARGARET Christine Thomas was born on 3rd May 1947, at Carveth Farm Tregony, daughter to Nick and Minnie. Her father was a farmer and Margaret spent many happy hours helping him, which is probably what gave her the passion for country living and the farming lifestyle. Whilst growing up Margaret was a keen and active member of Probus Young Farmers Club and it was there where the beautiful young Margaret caught the eye of a dashing young farmer from Grampound called John Richards. They were married in December 1970, and moved into Trudgian Farm. Before long they started a family, first Charles and then Will. Although Margaret was busy taking care of the boys she still managed to find time to help on the farm with a wide range of tasks including hand rearing calves, one of whom ate her wedding ring, which was never to be found again despite searching the dung heap with a metal detector!

40 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 268

In 1991 John and Margaret saw an opportunity to start selling their own produce and Trudgian Farm Shop was born. This was a pioneering move, as that was not what farmers did back then! Margaret ran the shop and worked tirelessly to get it off the ground, initially the shop was mobile before moving to Probus Square. People came from all over and with Margaret at the helm it was a success. People would love to see her welcoming smile when they came through the door and she would make sure that they would leave with a bit of chat and a full basket! In 2020 the pandemic struck and Margaret decided it would be sensible not be in the front line as she was possibly high risk. She went on to spend a lot of time developing another passion - gardening. She enjoyed being retired. At the end of March this year Margaret was unexpectedly taken ill. She spent just over four weeks in the critical care ward at Treliske but sadly they were unable to heal her at which point she was able to come home and be with her family until she passed away peacefully on Saturday 23rd April. Rest in Peace.

Repair Café By John Denyer Just prior to the first lockdown in March 2020 we had published a few exploratory articles about possibly starting up a repair café in Probus. Several people with a broad range of different skills had stepped forward to say they would be willing to be involved if we could get it off the ground. The pandemic stopped that idea (as well as several others) from being pursued, but now seems like a good time to try to get it off the ground once again. As a reminder, the idea is that you combine several people who like to fix things, with several people who have something to be fixed, in a social environment. Then, over a cuppa and a chat, the handle on granny’s favourite teapot is glued back on, the puncture on Sally’s bike is mended, and George has a button sewn back on his work shirt. I’m sure you have the picture by now. It seems (to me) to be an idea worth exploring, especially as most of us need to start to think more about what currently gets thrown away. Perhaps a simple repair may give an otherwise unuseable item a new lease of life. The café could also provide a social aspect, an opportunity to share and acquire skills in a safe environment. If you have skills in repairing items and an hour or two that you would be willing to share with the community, once a month, please get in touch. If you don’t have particular repair skills, but would be interested in supporting such a community initiative, then please also let me know. We’d also need a few lovely folks to put the kettle on and make tea, coffee and dish out a few biscuits - that’s very important too! 44 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 268

Throw it away? no way! Fix it at

Probus

Repair Café A monthly repair café in Probus could be a small, maybe only micro-step, forwards towards a more sustainable future, but it’s a start. With a population of 3,000’ish in our village, there has to be an opportunity in Probus to promote, educate and set up local reuse, recycle, repair and upcycle initiatives like this. If you are curious about what could be set up in Probus, check out the Upcycle Kernow CIC www.upcyclekernow.org. What they have done over in Portreath is quite remarkable...

Probus Book Club By Liz Horder

T

HE book some of us read last month was Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh, it is the first book of a trilogy. It is set in the time of the British Raj when Britain was forcing Indian farmers into growing opium poppies. The opium factories were local to the farms and many Indians were employed in these factories, then when the opium had been processed, it was sent to China. Britain made vast sums of money trading the opium and this is what led to the Opium Wars with China. The characters in the book are very well

described, although the language used can be a bit off putting. Many of the words used are not always understood by the reader. They are a mixture of many different languages, including seafaring slang. If the reader perseveres this does not distract from the story and the characters. All the following characters come together in the second half of the book on the Ibis, an old slaving ship when it is sailing from Calcutta to Mauritius. Deeti is a widow to opium and is saved from her husband’s funeral pyre by low caste Kalua. Paulette is the orphaned daughter of a French botanist, escaping from sexual harassment by her so-called guardian. Jodu is the son of her wet nurse and is like a brother to her and determined to go to sea. A bankrupt raja, Neel Raattan Halder is convicted of forgery and relieved of his estate by an avaricious opium dealer, he befriends Ah Fatt an opium addict who is half Chinese and half Parsi. Zachary, a freed American mixed-race sailor, on board the Ibis, has come to hold a much more responsible place on the ship, than when it had started out from America due to the deaths of the more senior crew members. When he arrives in Calcutta he is mistaken for a gentleman and enters society.

March Hare sings about love

S

OME of you may remember 16-year -old Isaac who played The March Hare in this year’s PPP pantomime Alice In Wonderland. His was one of several standout performances in the village panto, where he wowed audiences with his singing and acting talent. Congratulations are due to Isaac because on 4th May, supported by Cornwall Music Education Hub, his first two track single was released and is available to listen to on Spotify, and other platforms as well as YouTube. His songs This Love and Lovers’ Hill, both love ballads, are really good too! Somehow, I think this won’t be Isaac’s last music release!

ask, and they did take the league title challenge to the penultimate game before being beaten by the eventual winners Tregorrick. But, they overcame North Petherwin in the League Cup Final to gain some silverware! With two key players missing, the remaining squad stepped up to the mark and battled superbly to win the final 1-0. Henry C scored the winning goal in the third minute. However, it was the back line of Oscar B, Finn L and Matthew who held the line superbly, with Barney looking assured in goal on the rare occasions the defence was breached. The boys totally deserved their silverware, they have gelled so much as a unit this season, developing both individually and as a fully functioning team. Onwards and upwards boys, well done!

HE men’s CDL started with one loss and one win. The triples was better with two wins out of two.

Our three in the County Triples, Pete Wyatt, Dave Harris and Rod Danyluk, managed a win against strong opposition from Stenalees in their preliminary round. The ladies are struggling with numbers so have not been able to play as many matches as they wanted. If you would like to try your hand at bowling just give me a call, we are a friendly club, and look forward to seeing new members.

ROBUS FC has had a fantastic season, not just winning the league, which was a great achievement in itself, but what made it very special was having many of the old youth team players return to play for the village once again.

HE 1st XI has had a near perfect start to the season, only dropping one point and heading the County One division table. The other three teams have had mixed results, but there have been some very creditable team and personal performances along the way, the most notable being a record breaking bowling spell from Mike Eastwood in Division 4 East: 8 overs, 8 maidens, 0 runs, 6 wickets!

The Ladies XI have won their first round in the National Clubs T20 Cup competition and will travel to Dorset for the next round. The 1st XI has entered the National Village Cup this year and will play their first match (3rd round) on 22nd May against Roche or Yelverton. Saturday 7th May marked the 62nd anniversary of the first ever league match played at Grampound Road. This was against Wadebridge with GRCC winning by 8 wickets.
