On Thursday 3rd April, Brian was treated to a surprise celebration when over 50 of his friends joined him for a trip on the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway, enjoying a cream tea en route.

ONGRATULATIONS and happy 25th wedding anniversary to Ben and Donna Avery from Carne View Road. They were married at Probus church on 3rd June 2000 and are heading to Singapore and Australia to celebrate their silver anniversary. Donna says they still love living in Probus.

A

S part of the ongoing development of a community hub in the area, the church is pleased to introduce a number of new ventures.

Community Café: Open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10 am to noon, in addition to ‘coffee and chat’ on Tuesdays from 10:30 am to noon and on Fridays from 8:45–10 am.

Pain Café: First Monday of each month, 10 am to noon.

Dementia Carers Café: Second Monday of each month.

The Little Lights Baby and Toddler Group has extended opening times from 9:30–11:30 am every Thursday during term time.

We hope to confirm dates for a Memory Café, Cancer Care Café and others in the coming weeks and months.

Help is urgently needed to ensure that all our existing groups can continue to use its improved facilities. But for the time being, we are struggling along.

Probus Village Hall A venue for the whole village

HE village hall is reaching a crisis point. With the sad passing of Ross Goldsworthy, our Vice Chair, together with the sudden resignation of the Chair, new officers are urgently required to help administer the hall.

We have a responsibility to the charity commission to have a minimum of three officers – Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. We need to find additional

As always, this edition contains the local news, updates, events and a few stories of interest. In addition,. we also include stories from some of the founders, plus a who’s who, and who does what in the current team. Lastly, we describe the process we go through to publish and distribute it 11 times a year. You may be surprised at how many people, and how much is involved so we do hope you will indulge us a little while we celebrate.

I

T’S been a bit of a marathon team effort to bring this larger-than-usual 300th edition to publication status, so I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed. I want especially to thank the editorial team of Sarah, Dave, Emily, Clare and Jon. As photographer, Jon had the unenviable task of trying to get close-up images of everyone involved – herding cats comes to mind. Several of us (including me) being somewhat camera shy. Anyway, that job’s done, so thanks to them all.

I came up with the concept of creating a front cover based upon images of all the previous front covers. I thought it might be possible, but had no idea how to do it. Fast forward through a steep learning curve, several YouTube videos and guidance from people who do this stuff professionally. It took hours, and multiple attempts, but I finally it got

it to work. I wonder if this triggers any memories, or if you can spot someone you know. I couldn’t resist including a couple of images of the magazine’s much-missed friend, Terry Hodge.

That process required cataloguing and then digitising the archive of back copies of Probus News, during which I discovered that we had a few gaps in our collection.

Does anyone have any old back copies stored away in their loft or garage?

We’re missing either some of all of the editions from 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

I would be very pleased to hear from you if you have any of these stored away and forgotten about.

I hope you find something of interest in our 300th edition, and enjoy all that May brings.

How it all began

O here we are, at our 300th issue!

This publication was designed from the outset as a community magazine. It was intended to replace the old parish magazine, which did not actually reach all the houses in the village. (In fact, its circulation was just 135 copies.)

It was decided that this new publication should be called Probus News, with the strapline ‘The magazine for the community’, and that it should be delivered free of charge to every household. One of its stated aims was to foster a greater sense of belonging by reporting on news, events and local groups, thus encouraging more people to get involved in village activities.

The first magazine was delivered at the end of March 1998 and comprised 24 pages. In the years since then, we’ve seen it grow from strength to strength.

The most obvious changes have been the increase in the number of pages and in the switch from black and white to full colour.

The visionaries who formed the first committee were: John (Jack) Vincent, Nick Arthur, Ken Sansom, Ann Sansom, Beryl Vincent, Ian Morris (Rector), Liz Harper, Diane Reynolds, Dave Nicholls and Paul Durham, a number of whom are still here in Probus.

In October 2020, for our 250th issue, we asked two of those founding members to look back on the early days. We’re reprinting their words here as a reminder of how it all began and we’re so grateful to them for setting the wheels in motion all those years ago. For this edition, we asked fellow founding committee members Ken and Ann Sansom for their memories, too.

Jack Vincent How did it happen? Back in late 1997 I made a comment about the church’s ‘Pews News’, it being a ‘cut and paste’ and photocopied magazine strictly for churchgoers. The comment was taken up by the then vicar, the Rev. Ian Morris. Knowing I was semi-retired with a newspaper background, he challenged me to do better! I took up the challenge to produce a magazine on the understanding it would be a community magazine.

I was supported by a small group of really enthusiastic people who really wanted it to succeed. Next was the onerous task of getting businesses to part with their money without knowing what the finished item would look like.

Looking at the first edition now, there are still ten advertisers who continue to support us to this day.

Since the start there have been only three editors – first myself and then Simon Wilcocks, who died after only

three years in the editor’s chair. The magazine then came back to me and, on my retirement, the position was handed to the present editor, John Denyer, who has taken the magazine to new heights with full colour and presentation.

Over the years the committee has changed completely but with the same commitment to produce a good magazine.

Nick Arthur WOW! Anything that lasts that long must be pretty good! The magazine is good, of course, and it’s so pleasing to have been associated with it from its inception. Due to the hard work of many over the years, we now have a village publication to be proud of and that is the envy of many others.

There are so many elements involved in getting the ‘News’ to people’s homes.

We found that out right away. There are many more involved than just the

committee – the article writers, the news gatherers, the vital work of the editor, the proofreaders, the typesetter, collecting the newly printed boxes of mags from the printers, distributing the correct number to the excellent delivery team who pop them through the doors of Probus residents.

Without the support of the village as a whole, the magazine would never have been a success. So everyone who has been involved over the years deserves a hearty pat on the back. Well done, Probus!

Ken and Ann Sansom As newcomers to the village, Ann and I were surprised to be asked to join a group launching a new village magazine, but what better way to get involved in our new community. Neither of us had any idea what was involved but with John Vincent’s enthusiasm and expertise, alongside the hard work from the whole committee, we set about the task. As the first treasurer I was heartened by the way local businesses embraced the idea of advertising.

It’s amazing that the black-and-white beginnings have evolved to full colour and a digital edition; I still keep an eye on what’s happening online. The prize draw was introduced to ensure that we could continue to operate. Perhaps the most memorable experience was the involvement of the magazine in promoting the Millennium celebrations.

What seemed like the whole village gathered in Probus Square to see in the year 2000 and enjoy the firework display provided by Derek and Joan at The Hawkins. Probus is lucky to have so many residents who are willing to give the time to ensure that the village has such a community resource.

Congratulations on 300 editions – long may you continue.

A message from Rev. Linda

M

AY I wish you all the blessings of May. It is difficult to believe that Easter Sunday was almost two weeks ago. The Easter cake and Easter eggs are all gone (well, mine are) but, fortunately, the Easter message lasts longer than cake and eggs; it is for all time.

Perhaps May’s new growth is a good time to remind ourselves that God calls us to grow ever closer to Him. As we travel through the Easter season, may we sense His closeness in the beauty of the Spring mornings, and in the simple things that surround us in our daily lives. This is, of course, easy to say, but not always easy to do.

On Thursday 8th May it will be the 80th anniversary of VE Day, and Thursday 29th May marks the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ – 40 days after Easter.

So, as we continue to celebrate the Easter season, while approaching the commemoration of VE Day, and recalling the ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, perhaps we may reflect on the profound meaning behind Jesus’ resurrection: the enduring message of trust and renewal that it brings?

It gives us hope for a future we cannot see, and for those we have lost who are hidden from our sight for now.

In many ways, in our culture, we struggle to depend on God. We are encouraged to be independent and self-sufficient. In Psalm 62, David says: ‘Trust in God at all times; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.’

Many of us find this difficult; we want to keep what is going on in our hearts out of sight, perhaps because, in that secret place, we keep our most precious hopes and dreams, our deepest fears and our heaviest burdens.

We are known and deeply loved by God, and to grow in that relationship,may we all take 14 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 300

the route of pouring out our heart in prayer wherever we are at any time.

There are always opportunities for prayer within St Probus and St Grace, whether in the quiet of the weekday or at one of our regular services – so please do take up those opportunities and feel free to get in touch personally.

May you be richly blessed as we continue through the Easter season.

ROBUS Church is currently heated by a failing system that is over 30 years old! The church is a popular location to host community hub activities, along with weddings, funerals and all the usual services, so it has been decided that a more sustainable and efficient heating source is required.

The church team have been successful in their application for funding from the ‘Give To Go Green Campaign‘ – a match-funding project from the Church of England that doubles locally raised donations during a 6-week window (between 3rd May and 13th June).

To raise as much as possible, an exciting programme of events has been curated: 3rd May: Plant sale on the cobbles, coffee morning in church, 10 am–noon.

9th May: Falmouth Community Gospel Choir concert, 7 pm. £10 adults, £5 U16s.

31st May: Church and tower open day see the historical features in the church and climb the tower. £5 adults, £2 U16s to go up the tower. Refreshments and book stall in the church 9 am–5 pm.

7th June: Forest Messy Church in the sanctuary garden, 2–4 pm.

Who’s Who on Probus News

P

RODUCING and delivering a village magazine eleven times a year for 27+ years is a huge collaborative effort and is done entirely by volunteers. These are the people who make it happen. You can find out more about the actual production process on pages 30–33.

CHAIRPERSON – Sheila Bing I’ve been a committee member since October 2011, first of all shadowing the Delivery Manager, and then as Delivery Manager. Before the AGM in October 2014, I was asked if I would take on the role of Chairperson. I’m responsible for making sure that each meeting is planned effectively and conducted according to the constitution, that the business is discussed in line with the agenda, that all relevant matters are discussed and that effective decisions are made and carried out.

SECRETARY – Peter Clarke I’ve been on the committee of Probus News since 2016. As Secretary my role is to support the Chairperson in ensuring the smooth functioning of the committee.

My specific responsibilities are to ensure that the monthly meetings are effectively organised and minuted, maintain effective records and administration, and uphold legal requirements and correspondence.

TREASURER – Eddie Bokas I’m responsible for day-to-day finance matters such as online banking, paying invoices and maintaining finance Excel spreadsheets. I report to the committee at the monthly meetings and present the annual balance sheet at the AGM. My single biggest task is the annual Christmas Draw. This involves applying for the raffle licence, getting the tickets printed, banking all the money raised, and folding literally hundreds of raffle ticket stubs prior to the draw (although other committee members generously help out over a festive Christmas glass or two!).

DEPUTY TREASURER – Val Forster Having moved to Probus last April from Lincolnshire, I volunteered to join the magazine committee as a way of learning more about the village and getting to know people. I have previous experience as a treasurer of small non-profit organisations which I can bring to my new role assisting the treasurer at Probus News magazine.

ADVERTISING – Kaye Ludlow My family moved to Probus in 1985.

When I retired from the NHS ten years ago, I was able to re-immerse myself in village life and soon became involved with the magazine. My role has evolved over a few years, but is basically an administrative one. I respond to requests for information about advertising, and once advertisers are established, I am responsible for sending invoices and following up any questions. I work very closely with the Editor to ensure artwork for adverts is suitable, and also with the Treasurer regarding invoices and receipt of payments.

SOCIAL MEDIA – Vanessa McGill I’ve been on the committee and a magazine deliverer for about seven years. I regularly post on the Probus News Facebook page in order to make people aware of important news and events happening in and around the village. Sometimes these topics are also covered in the print and online versions of the magazine, but at other times things happen at short notice and miss the copy deadlines, so our Facebook page provides an additional source of information. When I first took over social media, we had about 200 followers; now we have more than 800!

THE EDITORIAL TEAM EDITOR – John Denyer I became editor in September 2016, taking over from founder Jack Vincent.

I enjoy the role, interviewing people, and attending events to gather stories. I love turning these into engaging articles, planning each edition, and designing the magazine, including selecting the front cover. While it’s a busy job, it’s made easier by the strong, capable editorial team we’ve built over the years.

Dave Meggs I joined the committee as Secretary in 2016, moving to the editorial team in 2018 and doing an Adobe InDesign course at Truro College with John.

I’m responsible for the church times and church article in the magazine, as well as one of the book club reviews.

I also write the report from Probus Bowling Club. Sheila and I also help Tim sort the magazines into bags for the deliverers and, if required, act as reserve deliverers.

Sarah Hoggett After we moved to Probus, my partner Jon and I went along to Probus News’ AGM to find out what it was all about.

Fifteen minutes later, we’d both been co-opted onto the committee! I write up reports of village events and features of local interest, which can range from charity fundraisers to the Village Hall improvements. I really enjoy meeting people and discovering more about what’s going on in our lovely community.

Clare McNeilly Datson I’m new to the Probus News team. I was recently recruited after answering a wanted ad for someone with experience in using Adobe InDesign. I’m hoping to be able to use my skills to help the team on the technical/design side of the magazine – perhaps writing the odd article, too! I was born in Probus, so it’s lovely be involved with the local community.

Emily Forster I moved into my parents’ new home in Probus after graduating from university last year with a degree in marine and natural history photography. I work at the Roseland Cattery and Kennels and have always combined my love for animals with photography and storytelling. I hope writing articles for Probus News will allow me to share my passion for nature and get our lovely readers involved in helping our local wildlife thrive.

PHOTOGRAPHER – Jon Hibberd I’m a keen photographer and sell some of my work at local craft fairs. I joined the Probus News team with Sarah four years ago and cover lots of local events – anything from rabbits to vintage vehicles, carnivals and church fetes. It’s pushed me to take photos I wouldn’t normally take, such as group shots and portraits. It’s an interesting role and keeps me involved with the village.

But I’m really good at spotting spelling and punctuation errors and typos, so I volunteered to be a proofreader for Probus News. Why is proofreading necessary? Well...

THE DELIVERY TEAM DELIVERY MANAGER – Tim Joyce My role is to ensure that every house and the local businesses receive their free magazines each month. This entails dividing the magazines into 20 manageable ‘rounds’ and delivering the bags to the deliverers. The smallest round has 20 houses, the largest 76! Our youngest deliverer is 15 and the eldest nearing 80!

To celebrate the three-hundredth issue of this magazine, local wildlife photographer, Emily Forster, discusses the changes and challenges UK wildlife has faced over the past twenty-five years...

Wildlife in the UK has experienced significant changes over the last two decades due to a combination of environmental, climate and human factors.

We have seen a decline in many native bird species like the turtle dove, nightingale and curlew, mostly due to habitat loss and changes in farming practices. Many pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, have declined due to the use of harmful pesticides, loss of wildflower meadows and climate 26 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 300

change. And when we take a look at mammals, hedgehog numbers have dropped drastically (by over 50% in some areas), and red squirrels continue to be outcompeted by the invasive grey squirrel.

However, some species are recovering.

Birds of prey including red kites, peregrine falcons and white-tailed eagles have made strong comebacks, thanks to reintroduction programs and legal protection. Otters were once almost extinct in many parts of the

The little egret first bred in the UK in 1996 in Dorset and is now widespread across southern and eastern England. They benefited from milder winters, climate change and protection under the EU Birds Directive.

Soon after, the larger relative of the little egret, the great white egret, began to turn up. The first successful breeding pair was in 2012 in Somerset.

While they are a less common sight, their population is steadily growing across wetland reserves.

It is clear that some of these shifts in species are due to a warming climate. Warmer temperatures have allowed some species, such as the egret family, to expand northwards.

A combination of conservation and rewilding projects has improved habitat suitability, along with population booms in southern Europe pushing some birds to seek new nesting grounds.

While we are seeing increases in urban wildlife like foxes, badgers and deer, we are also seeing a spread of invasive species across the country. Grey squirrels, muntjac deer and Himalayan balsam are an increasingly common sight, often to the detriment of native species.

Do not worry as there is still hope!

Conservation and rewilding projects across the UK have demonstrated the potential to boost biodiversity. In Cornwall, the expansion of heathland habitat, tree planting and coastline restoration have gained momentum and allow for everyone in the local community to lend a helping hand.

QUICK disclaimer. First off, with the exception of Sarah (a freelance book editor), none of us has any professional experience in publishing.

We’re all volunteers. Our team brings a wide range of experience, but none of it is specifically in magazine publishing.

Producing Probus News is a continuous learning experience – not just the editorial process, but also mastering the tools and software that help bring the magazine to life.

Ideally, we try to plan the current issue in detail and rough plan the following two editions, though it often feels like there’s no real break between editions.

The editorial team meets once or twice a month (mostly in the pub) to swap ideas, leads and news. We agree who will do what, including interviews or followups. We rely heavily on the community to inform us about events and stories.

The more the village shares with us, the better the magazine becomes.

Our planning tool is a visual layout of all pages. We dedicate pages to advertising and use the tool to agree where our creative content should go and importantly how much space we can dedicate to any one topic. It’s a flexible guide; content availability can change rapidly, and sometimes we’ll have multiple blank pages just a week before proofreading. Then suddenly, we’re overflowing with submissions.

That’s why early content submissions from contributors are crucial.

Advertising Advertising is another key piece. The editor works closely with Kaye, the Advertising Manager to track which ads stay, change, or get removed for each

edition. Some advertisers update their ads monthly, which is fine — but it adds complexity. We ask for ‘print-ready’ adverts, as professional graphic design is not something we have the skills for.

Proofreading

The magazine is designed and laid out in Adobe InDesign, an industry-standard tool that’s powerful but complex. Most of us are self taught, although some have taken classes. Each team member creates pages in InDesign and submits them to the Editor, who assembles them into a master copy. Ideally, we’d work collaboratively in the same document, but Adobe’s pricing changes currently limit our access to that functionality.

When the draft is ready, we move to proofreading.

Our trio — Marilyn, Tania and Teresa – review printed pages, marking up corrections. Having multiple proofreaders helps catch different kinds of errors. Sometimes all three spot the same mistake; other times, just one picks up a subtle issue. Their feedback is incorporated into the master version by the Editor.

Photography Jon Hibberd is our photographer, a skilled amateur rather than a professional.

He covers events and ensures we get high-quality images on time. Other images come from contributors, or the editorial team themselves, and often need enhancement using Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom — yet another May 2025 | 31

Final checks and preparing for print Next, we go through a series of detailed checks — verifying advert placement, image quality, alignment, resolution and colour mode. This part of the process is critical and must be done thoroughly, even when we’re under time pressure.

Mistakes still sneak through occasionally.

(Yes, I recently printed ‘hunchback whale’ instead of ‘humpback whale’ — despite reading it over a hundred times.

Printing We use ControlPrint in Redruth (www. controlprint.co.uk). They run a state-of the-art operation, powered partly by solar and battery banks, use eco-friendly inks and FSC-certified paper with none of the waste going to landfill. Printing is a high-energy-intensive industry, and ControlPrint Ltd is deeply committed to minimising its environmental footprint. Their modern German-built Heidelberg Speedmaster 5-colour press is impressive, capable of printing 15,000 sheets per hour.

While the printing press itself is fast, the process is complex – involving printing large sheets that each contain four pages of the magazine, so for this edition of 60 pages, that’s 75,000 A5 pages, or 9,375 large sheets in total. Each sheet is passed through the press twice to print on the front and reverse sides.

The highly skilled printer continuously performs quality checks and has to have great attention to detail. Once printed, the pages are guillotined, sorted, collated and stitched (stapled) in another automated process before being boxed up as finished magazines and delivered to Probus.

Delivery Tim Joyce, our Delivery Manager, receives the boxed magazines — usually by late morning on the Friday of publication day. He and his helpers sort them into 20 delivery rounds using our blue Probus News satchels. Inserts, if any, are included at this stage.

Tim and other volunteers split the rounds by village location, delivering the satchels to the homes of our volunteer deliverers. These folks are so efficient, and concientious that magazines often reach residents by Friday afternoon or evening. Out of 1,250 printed copies, currently 1,153 go directly to homes in Probus and a few nearby addresses, while the rest are dropped at local shops, the pub and the church. Some

The cycle is continuous – we publish 11 editions a year. As soon as one edition is out the door, we’re already planning the next, and the next after that. It’s hard work, sometimes pressurised, but always rewarding, and always something new to learn. Of course, none of it would be possible without the commitment of our dedicated volunteers and the support of the village.

VE Day memories

A

FTER five years eight months of war, VE Day was declared on 8th May 1945. In one way or another, World War Two impacted every family in Probus. Some families in our village were devastated with the loss of fathers, brothers or sons, either killed, injured or missing. Civilians were not immune either, with bombing raids claiming lives in Plymouth, Falmouth, Truro and Bodmin. There was a raid on Probus, too.

Sylvia Bishop Sylvia Bishop was 11 years old in May 1945, but can remember Victory in Europe (VE) Day clearly.

Sylvia remembers crowds of very happy and joyful people from the village congregating at the playing field (now known as the park). People wore red, white and blue rosettes and waved flags.

She remembers decorating her black Scottie dog with a rosette and ribbons on his lead.

She remembers going to the playing field with eight of the evacuees in the village, all the same age as her, and quite remarkably, given that it was 80 years ago, she remembers their names: Gwen and Sylvia Hunt, Heather Melrose, Aubrey Briar, Sylvia and Joan Atkins and Kathleen and Joy Withers. Kathleen eventually married a Melville Webb from the village, related to the Webb family now in the village.

Sylvia went to the street tea party in Probus Square and in the evening a bonfire was lit at Trewithen with effigies of Hitler, Rommel, Goebbels and Mussolini on the top – people cheered when they caught fire.

Sylvia remembers that the church bells were ringing most of the day.

Iris Gallaway Long-time Probus resident, 97-year-old Iris Gallaway, was born on 6th October 1927. She was 11 years old when the war started in September 1939 and 17 when it ended in Europe in May 1945. During the war, Iris lived with her parents and siblings in Indian Queens.

Iris had four older brothers who had all joined the army. Her father, a World War One veteran, was called up too, but as he was still suffering from the effects of WWI (nowadays called PTSD), he was subsequently discharged and returned home to join the Home Guard.

When asked about memories of the beginning of the war, Iris’s immediate recollection was having to shelter under the stairs when the air raid siren went off. Once an air raid shelter had been constructed in the garden, Iris remembers sleeping in it overnight with all the family and still going to school during the following day. When asked if it was scary as a child, she said, ‘Yes, but we all got used to it. We'd go to school and practise putting our gas masks on.

If there was an air raid warning, we'd run and hide in the hedge. We used to practise that a lot.’

Iris recalls an air raid that hit the cemetery in Indian Queens and seeing a German aircraft swoop so low that it went between her house and the neighbours’ house.

She also remembers seeing the distant night sky lit up red from the air raids in Plymouth. The house of an older sister who lived in Plymouth had been bombed. Amazingly she survived and, along with her two children, she was evacuated to Indian Queens to live with Iris’s family. Iris also recalls an air raid

that hit the power station near Fraddon, and another tragic raid in Truro that claimed 14 lives.

When she was 14, Iris left school and got a job working in a private hotel in Newquay. To save the bus fare, Iris recalls cycling from Indian Queens to Newquay every day and home in the evenings. Before the war Iris’s father had been chef at the Victoria Hotel, Newquay. It ran in the family, as two of her brothers trained as chefs in the army, with brother Les becoming head chef at the Headland Hotel, one day cooking for famous American actor Clark Gable.

On VE Day, Iris recalls people in the street in Indian Queens, celebrating.

Long trestle tables had been put out, with flags and bunting. People cooked food and put it on the tables to share.

In the evening, 17-year-old Iris went to St Columb along with a girlfriend to join the street party and a big dance that had been arranged there. Iris says that it was crowded, people were dancing through the narrow streets, and there was a big conga. At the end of the evening, Iris and her girlfriend got a ride home on the bike crossbars of two young airmen from RAF St Mawgan. When asked if she went into one of the pubs, Iris was a little coy, saying, ‘I think I did have a drink, but I never did drink a lot. But then you didn’t have no money in those days anyway.

No, I don’t think I went in a pub much until I met my husband’. Iris says the VE Day celebration was wonderful, and she remembers it very clearly.

Sadly, the fighting hadn’t finished everywhere, and it was still savage in the Far East. Many local families still had members serving overseas. Fortunately, all four of Iris’s brothers returned home safely. Iris said that hers was a lucky family.

A stone’s throw away

I

FIND myself increasingly hampered these days by a dodgy right hip that needs replacing, but it may have to go on grinding for the foreseeable future. My long cross-country ramblings have been curtailed, reduced to short walks around the village, and even then it’s best if I stay on level ground.

I’ve noticed that old age leaves me with a dual aspect; increasingly looking back through memories of halcyon days, when the world was my oyster and everything seemed possible, or forward to a future that still offers great excitement, but maintaining the balance between the two is not always obvious.

important here and now, and of living in the moment.

February is not famed for its beautiful sunny days, but when they do occur I like to make the most of them. The churchyard being only just a stone’s throw away is a favourite place for me to sit quietly with my sketch pad, and if it’s too chilly, out will come that marvel of modern technology, my mobile phone. It’s been almost two years since I ventured into Tesco’s and enquired about their flat cameras. The young man looked baffled until I added that I believe they also have the ability to make phone calls and all manner of internet things.

There have been a lot of changes in the churchyard over the past two years and, with major clearing of the boundary hedges and overgrown graves, it’s now possible to see just how extensive it is.

We are perhaps fortunate that those boundaries became unkempt, and thus

avoided the trend that began in the ‘70s of uprooting headstones and placing them around edges of the graveyard for easy maintenance. We didn’t, however, avoid the felling of the fine beech trees within the graveyard, and one by one they were felled. The last massive trunk remains as an ugly reminder of what has been lost. The excuse given was that they had a fungal infection, but as my brother said at the time, ‘I get athletes foot, but nobody suggests I should be cut off at the shins!’ Removing the tree canopy only served to allow more light in and hence more growth of wild garlic and brambles. The yew trees escaped unscathed, perhaps due to some badluck superstition of old, but there is no time like the present for planting trees that one day our grandchildren will be able to climb or sit in the shade of.

Today’s trendy environmental byword of ‘re-wilding’is more often than not used as a convenient excuse to do nothing. Land

that had been traditionally managed for centuries can be treated in a less manicured way in order to increase the chances of wildlife, but to do nothing is not always the correct alternative for the harmonious existence of man and nature. The timing of grass cutting to encourage ground-nesting birds is an obvious bonus, and the replanting of hedgerows may bring privacy for some along with the delight of having small birds returning to the garden. However, the latter can also be dependent on the local cat population. The programme of re-wilding Probus churchyard has been a process of working with nature, while maintaining the upkeep of what has always been a managed area. Clearing away brambles and ivy has led to some fascinating discoveries, while leaving other areas uncut with the reintroduction of more wild flowers has brought colour and joy. My particular interest lately has been searching for the names of those May 2025 | 45

talented monumental masons who created such intricate design and often left their signature at the top edge of the gravestone. Most of these are on the slate stones dating from 1800 onwards, with on occasions some interesting spelling, like Dabb from St Austele, with an ‘e’. I found: W. Coad from St Enoder, Edgecombe Truro, Floyd or is that Floyd from Truro 1807, Isblle Truro, and Spargo of Truro dated 1871. During a jaunt around a few other local graveyards, I’ve recorded Hugh from Veryan 1851, Pearce Truro 1860, Edwin Kitt St Austell 1862, Julefe Ladock 1855, Do(u)rington Truro 1851, Edgcombe Truro 1834 and Scot.

Unfortunately I’m not here during the spring, but for me the low light during winter months is a time of contrast and ideal for sketching. The long shadows cast by gravestones and trees provide depth, and at times those shadows can 46 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 300

even tell me what lies outside my field of vision.

Restricted to these shorter walks gives me time to look again at the familiar and more often than not to observe things that had until now remained idden or taken for granted. The carved stones in the east wall of the church have always fascinated me as they would date from the 14th century having almost certainly been incorporated from the earlier St George’s Chapel founded in 1384.

While most of these carved stones are purely decorative others have more meaning, like that of a catherine wheel to celebrate St Catherine. However the Arma Christi stone depicting the weapons of the Passion is perhaps one of the rarest objects within the fabric of the church building. Immediately to the right of this stone is a cruciform carving that may represent the thirty pieces of silver. A comparison can be made with

these stones and one very similar in the vaulted entrance porch of Creed church, and that may also confirm their age. The impressive Hawkins tomb supported by four cavaliers provides a good vantage point to see a tiny, relatively insignificant caryatide head high on the east gable, another re-use of stone from an earlier period.

within the curtilage of the churchyard, as well as something of interest for the artist’s eye. I also find peace at the heart of the village, and if I can no longer roam into the surrounding countryside, I’m more than happy to just sit and observe.

I’ve often wondered what the statues that were originally placed in the hooded alcoves of the tower must have looked like. Given the quality of the tower carving, they must have been very impressive.

The era of Oliver Cromwell probably put paid to them, but the tower itself remains the tallest and most ornate in Cornwall.

Over the decades I’ve watched the roof of the sextant’s hut gradually fall into disrepair, but I am delighted that efforts are being made for its restoration. There is always something new to discover

TThere are two main spelling systems in use in Cornish – Standard Written Form (SWF) and Kernewek Kemmyn (Common Cornish), although there isn’t a huge difference between them. This text is written in Kemmyn. In the pronunciation guide, stressed syllables are shown in capital letters (in Cornish the stress usually falls on the penultimate syllable).

NOTES: * Cornish doesn’t have words for ‘yes’ and ‘no’, so you have to repeat the verb used in the question.

In this case, that means saying either ‘I do want’ (mynnav) for yes or ‘I don’t want’ (na vynnav) for no. ** AKA swede, depending on where you’re from.

Children’s phones should be simple, not smart!

S a secondary school teacher of 16 years, a mother and a scientist, I ask you to think very carefully before you buy your child a smartphone.

When you place that device in their hands and tell them it’s theirs, you’ll see the happiness it brings. You’ll feel you’ve done a good thing – but what follows is anything but good. The hidden harms of smartphones are hard to discuss, as we don’t see any physical marks. We have to look to the research and make it our mission to understand what’s going on and how our children’s brains are being harmed.

‘In the last decade there have been 70% fewer outdoor accidents and 93% more incidents of self-harm in children… I can promise you it’s much easier to mend a broken bone than a broken mind’, said Dr Susie Davies, citing NHS data.

As Jonathan Haidt points out in his bestselling book The Anxious Generation, we live in a time where children are over protected in the real world and under protected in the virtual world. We are far more comfortable knowing our children are ‘safe’ in their bedrooms than out playing in the local park. But how safe are they? The most careful parents will install tight parental controls on their child’s smartphone before handing it over, trusting that they will keep their child safe. They won’t! Parental controls may stop your child from accessing well-known porn websites and perhaps you can approve (or not) the apps they wish to download, but that’s about as far as it goes.

The students in my school all tell me that in year 7 and 8 most of the year group joins a group chat (usually on WhatsApp or SnapChat). Not wanting our children to miss out socially, we will probably allow them to be in this group chat.

Who would want to isolate their child from an entire year group? Me! I would!

Unfortunately, the parental controls that we so carefully install don’t stop the sharing of photos or videos via these apps. If one child in that year group sees some disturbing porn or a beheading video, they may feel traumatised. Their way to deal with that is to share it to the group: ‘Look what I just saw’. There is no parental control or setting that stops that image reaching your child’s phone and your child’s eyes and mind. Once seen, it cannot be unseen. So, when you connect your child to the year group chat, do you trust every other child in the group not to share that sort of content?

And what about the cyber bullying?

When someone changes the group chat name to ‘Everyone in year 7 except Marissa’ or ‘We hate Marissa’, the onslaught begins. In the past, bullying was something you could leave at the school gates. Now it’s relentless and follows children everywhere – into their bedroom, into their safe space and into their self-belief.

I haven’t even begun to touch on the issues of attention demands or time spent on screens and not in the real world (an average 29 hours per week for a 12 year old, according to Childwise Monitor Report, 2021) or the impact on education. There’s so much to think about. So please, consider buying your child a simple phone, not a smartphone.

Probus Bowling Club

n Saturday 12th April, the Green was opened by special guest Sam Galsworthy bowling the first wood.

Despite the April showers Sam unveiled a commemorative bench in memory of former bowler, Roger Johnson.

The inclement weather won for a moment and a temporary adjournment was called for members and guests to enjoy a faith tea in the Clubhouse. Just after 3 pm the skies cleared, allowing a quick roll-up.
