Community news and notices Probus Community Hawkins Arms Speed Watch fundraiser

T

HE Truro Police Neighbourhood Team has been successful in setting up a Community Speed Watch Scheme (CSW) on Tregolls Road, Malpas Road, Feock, Chacewater, New Mills and Ladock.

We are now very keen to set up a scheme in Probus. A safe site has been located, and now we just need some keen volunteers to conduct basic online training and be willing to give up 1-2 hours a month.

The objective of CSW is to educate drivers rather than enforcement of the 30mph speed limit within the village.

HE Hawkins Arms held their annual fundraiser in their beer garden to raise money for the Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

With the aid of Will Keating, Strange Almond, Alfie Haverhand and Ian Tumilty, the musicians who played at the event and Graham Kemp who loaned his marquee for the day, the sum of £850.60 was donated to CHSW. It was a fantastic day helped by the weather so thanks to all those that came along to support us.

HEN witnessing any of the above in our village (or anywhere else), would residents please be aware that Probus Parish Council is NOT the place to report such matters as we have no jurisdiction.

It is important that complaints or reports go directly to the police whose response time is relative to the severity of the incident and the number of reports received. Speed of reporting is also very important.

Reports can be made anonymously and we receive regular monthly updates on all recorded incidents.

HE last collection times for the four post boxes in and around Probus are:

Fore Street next to Probus School Filling Station (and post office) is 4:45 pm on Monday to Friday and 12 noon on Saturday.

The post boxes at Carne View, Tregony Road, near Parkengear and Truck are 9am Monday to Friday and 7am on Saturday.

Memory Café

HE Probus Memory Café is not likely to restart unless new volunteers step forward to help. For 10 years this really important local group has been supporting those with memory loss, as well as their carers. If you are in a position to help, please contact Claire Wright on 01872 520198.

A message from Rev Paul

B

Y the time this article comes out in print, I will have been ordained for a second time (this is happening on 26th of June).

This will mark the end of my year as a deacon - a sort of probationary year for most clergy with a focus on pastoral care and outreach.

The past year may well be one that many of us will wish to forget and the restrictions have meant that I have not been able to meet and greet as much as I would like to have done. However, in that time, I have had the pleasure of seeing church members both physically and online, in services and study groups. I have had the honour of being there for those at key moments in their lives through weddings, baptisms and funerals and I have been able to regularly chat alongside customers and volunteers at the community larder.

Trudgian’s. I’ll be more than happy to stop for a chat and a prayer – well, I ought be, as that’s the job and that’s one of the things that I’ll be promising to do at the cathedral on the 26th.

As I now take on the role of priest or presbyter (another word for shepherd), there will be a greater focus on leading others and presiding at communion but the task of meeting with people, helping in times of need, learning from others, enjoying their company and praying for them, will continue.

As we come out of lockdown there will be some catching up for me to do considering what was not possible last year and I would love the possibility of crossing paths with you, if I haven’t already. ELLO again everyone, welcome to another busy edition of your village magazine. Thanks to all contributors, and those that help in the background to get our village magazine to print each month.

Not for the first time recently, I’ve received more content than could fill the pages, we also welcome some new advertisers, so sorry if something you’ve asked for has not been included.

June was a busy month in the village as it was for wider Cornwall. The weather improved for half-term and many of us were able to get to our favourite beaches. Various shades of lobster red were spotted around the village as some of us reacclimatised with the strong Cornish sunshine, and the sea temperature, the hard way.

The weekend of 12-13th June was a real highlight, helped by the general excitement of the G7 and the world’s attention on Cornwall, the Euro2020 football championship and we also had our own Shindig and Vintage Rally.

Well done to JK and all those that helped him bring it off. As mentioned last month, you need to be a bit brave to attempt putting on a large village event, but it is so worthwhile. To cap it all, someone even arranged for the Red Arrows to fly up Fore St on the Sunday.

Lovely job.

Lastly, congratulations to Vernon, Owen and the other lads that call themselves Du Hag Owr, on being invited to sing to the G7 leaders. Well, that’s something very special indeed. They did themselves and us all proud.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, How great is technology that allows me to read edition 257 of Probus News online.

We still have original paper copies of the first 70+ editions, the vast majority of which are in black and white. Having just returned from our 2021 pilgrimage to Probus we thought that we had to put pen to paper (or rather fingers to keyboard) to say how much we enjoyed our few days there. Since leaving in 2005, we try to return whenever we can as it is the one place we still refer to as ‘home’.

Following the lifting of the latest lockdown restrictions we spent five wonderful nights at Roselinden. Please don’t spread the word about how good it is as we would like to keep that to ourselves! It was good to get a break in the weather so that we could sit out in the garden at The Hawkins Arms to reminisce and enjoy a drink. In the eight years we lived in Probus we never managed it past the bar inside! The Indian takeaway was just as good as we remembered. We met up with old friends (the Hibbetts and the Hurles), which is always a pleasure but we couldn’t persuade Nigel Collier that his milk round could be extended 150 miles up the M5.

Probus is such a great village with all the amenities that you could want and it is so well placed to get out and about to visit many of the other wonderful places in Cornwall. Here’s to our 2022 pilgrimage.

Dear Editor, I noticed the first road sign at the entrance to the Tregony View estate, then I noticed the second sign at the entrance to the close.

Which is the correct spelling?

Ann Myles Editor’s note: I emailed the Cornish language office at Cornwall Council, and received a reply from Sam Rogerson who said ‘I can confirm the correct spelling is Kew Gynnyav (meaning ‘Autumn Close’)’.

So there you have it Ann - that was fairly easy. As for who is responsible for correcting the road sign? I suspect that may be more challenging. The estate developers Wainhomes, or perhaps the council highways department? I also wonder if any residents of Kew Gynnyav have been inadvertently using the incorrect spelling on correspondence as that could be even more challenging to put right.

Dear Editor, Our cat, Spitfire, was hit by an unknown vehicle in Tregony Road just after the Shindig weekend. She was so badly injured that she had to be put down.

My family is devastated by the loss of our much loved family pet.

Can I ask drivers to watch out for children and pets while driving in and around the village.

Matches are arranged against Perranporth (11th July), St. Columb (17th July) Heavy Transport (25th July) and Stithians (31st July). All these are at home and start at 2 pm, so if you would like to watch, please feel free to come along.

Despite having an open day we are still seriously short of members. The ladies had to withdraw from the evening league as they didn’t have sufficient numbers. So, if you would like to try your hand at bowling, we have a club ‘roll up’ every Thursday at 2 pm and all are welcome, just wear flat soled shoes.

If we do not get some new members, there is a serious possibility that the club might fold.

ONGRATULATIONS to local shanty singers Du Hag Owr.

Known to many in the village, they had the honour of being invited to sing for the G7 leaders at their ‘BBQ on the Beach’ in Carbis Bay on Saturday 12th June.

They then followed that up with a second concert for support staff that was L-R Owen Champion, Chris Morse, Allan Collins, Claire (one of the principal organisers of the G7) and her colleague from the also well received.

Cabinet Office, Vernon Keen, Jim Taylor and Dave Rowe.

The group was interviewed on TV by CNN, BBC and ITV as as well as by numerous newspapers and also appeared live on the BBC Breakfast show.

Vernon Keen said ‘We started with South Australia and their Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, really joined in. Everyone

was having a good time, especially Boris and Carrie Johnson. With Pump, the chorus was amended to include the word ‘beggars’... in the heat of the moment some of us forgot. We finished with Harry Glasson’s classic anthem, Cornwall My Home’.

HE Premier T20 Tribute ‘Kernow Crash’ Finals Day was held at the club on bank holiday Monday.

A large crowd watched the two semifinals (Callington v Wadebridge and Penzance v Redruth) and then the grand final between Callington and the holders Penzance. Congratulations to Callington on becoming the new Premier T20 champions.

Probus Book Club

W

E had a meeting on 25th May, with windows wide open and secure in the knowledge that all members present had received both doses of the vaccine. It was a beautiful day and too hot to sit outside.

The library had managed to locate a book that we had requested Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd.

The book's title is deceptive. For some reason, I thought that the story would be about the sea!

We all enjoyed the book, some more than others. A few thought that the story was a bit far-fetched, while others found it very believable.

The story is about Adam, a young

climatologist arriving in South London to interview at Imperial College. After the interview, he finds a little Italian restaurant and whilst he is there, he starts talking to another solitary diner Dr Philip Wang, an immunologist. When Dr Wang leaves the restaurant, he leaves behind a folder. Adam finds Dr Wang’s address in the folder and decides to return it to its owner. This decision changes his whole life as murder, subterfuge and intrigue follow.

The story is set in South London, taking in the River Thames and other nearby locations. It is a story of Adam’s resourcefulness, the people he meets along the way, how he manages to survive on very little and to see a very different side to the life that he is used to. It shows how anyone can live in dire circumstances through no fault of their own. I do not want to say too much about the book, it might spoil the story.

William Boyd is such a good storyteller.

He also wrote 'Any Human Heart' that another book club member recommends.

I started helping Father when I was eight years old. I used to catch up the latern for him to feed the cattle. We had about fifty cows and horses too. I went to school up to St Mawgan in Pydar - I know all that country.

I’m two years short of a hundred, 98 years old I am. I was born in 1883 and I’m going to live on yet because I’m able to do a bit of work. What’s the good to say die!

I got married at St Mawgan - that’s a handsome church. No, we didn’t have a party after. That’s a long time ago money was scarce then. I worked for Father for a while and had fourteen shillings a week, but we lived well. We had plenty to eat, especially beef. Father used to bring great lumps of it, 5d a point and the best was 8d. We had fry up for breakfast and plenty of potatoes and turnips, but all that’s a long time ago, my dear girl.

Mr ‘Ern’ Webb Yes, I remember when I used to cycle miles out to deliver mail - as far as Trispen even. I was a postman for 33 years - there’s my certificate I had from London.

Tis greatly alterned from when I started. I used to go as far as St Michael Penkivel too - Lord and Lady Falmouth were lovely. Down Tregothnan, when members of parliament were staying there, special mail was delivered for them.

I did a morning round and often used to get streaming wet, but I had to go out again the afternoon. We deivered on Christmas Day too, and always collected Sundays. Postmen these days are luckier with their cars - and their wages too. I used to carry tuck boxes from the boys down Probus School, as well as the initialled leather cases for the MP’s.

I carried stamps for the country people as well as collecting from them. When I finished, everybody was very kind. I had a party two days down here. and I was preseted with a chair and a clock - there it is now. Well goodnight now - nice to see you.

Mr Steve Webb I remember growing up in a Probus cottage with a thatched roof and only oil lamps for lights. Upstairs, we just had candles. I remember wearing hobnailed boots to school and how the headmaster wanted me to learn the piano, but my ambition was football!

No we didn’t have school meals or buses - it was walking everywhere and in apple time we had to keep a sharp eye out for the local bobby! He used to clip our ears if he caught us!

I remember earning a few pence at the Sanctuary, cutting the grass and how Robbie Trescothing threw a stone right over the church tower. My father used to wak to Truro market, driving cattle all the way for the farmer he worked for, as there were no proper lorries then.

My dear mother took in a tramp off the road at Christmas time. He had only one arm, but he used to help pluck the turkeys, strapped on his knee. We all picked away togeter in a cloud of feathers that few up the open chimney.

Mother used a cloam oven and if us children used to annoy her, she would catch us on the legs with a wet dish cloth.

And I remember the thatch being replaced by tiles and the endless drips of water through the makeshift roof, but they were good days all the same.

Circular walk from Trenowth Viaduct

HIS is a circular walk of just under 6 km (approx. 3½ miles) that takes you through fields and quiet country lanes, with views over rolling farmland towards Grampound. It also takes you past two sites of architectural interest – Trenowth Viaduct and Garlenick Manor.

official right of way; at the time of writing, it’s rusted completely shut and the only option is to clamber over it. Do so at your own risk.

To reach the starting point, take the Grampound Road turn-off from the A390 and drive through the village. Just after you pass the last houses, turn right towards Trenowth. Continue for about 2.5 km (1½ miles), past the hamlet of Trenowth, under the railway bridge and past the Grade II-listed Trenowth Mill, which was built in the early-to-mid19th century to grind china stone. Park as close as you can to the viaduct – there’s space for a couple of cars on the left, just after you cross the first of two small stone bridges over the River Fal (although it’s no more than a stream at

this point), or a little further along, after the second bridge and near the turn-off to Grampound.

Trenowth Viaduct was built in the late 1850s as part of the railway between Plymouth and Truro.

Originally constructed mostly of wood resting on stone piers, it was replaced by the existing all-stone structure in 1884. It’s a tranquil spot (apart from the cawing of the neighbourhood rooks!), with just a couple of dwellings.

From your parking place head away from the viaduct and the aptly named Crow Hill, ignoring the minor roads to Grampound (on the right) and Coombe (on the left), and walk up the hill past Treway Farm. Mature overhanging trees on both sides cast dappled shade over the lane and there are occasional glimpses over the valley through the trees. When we last did this walk (midJune), the verges were full of wild flowers, including foxgloves, buttercups, cow parsley, pink campion, speedwell, herb robert and even a few early dog roses.

Immediately beyond this there’s a public footpath sign and a gate into a field on your right. Go through the gate and look to your right for a beautiful view over the fields towards Garlenick Manor, which you’ll see from the other side towards the end of the walk.

There are sometimes livestock in these fields, so skirt around the edges and keep any four-legged friends on a lead.

About 500 metres (1/3 mile) past Treway Farm, you’ll see a small blind spot mirror at the end of a track on your right and an old painted ‘Beware of the Bull’ sign on a gate to your left.

Walk across the top edge of the field and about halfway down the left-hand side, where you’ll find a traditional Cornish stone ‘sheep stile’ of steps set into the stone side of the hedge; they’re intended to be a barrier to sheep and July 2021 | 23

other livestock – the treads are set close to the hedge and are too far apart for the animals to be able to balance. This is the ‘official’ footpath, but this particular stile is a slightly tricky one even for humans to negotiate as the treads are very narrow, there’s virtually nothing to hold on to, and the bottom tread on the far side is missing! However, on the two occasions we’ve done this walk, there’s been no fencing in place at the bottom of the field between this field and the next one – a much easier option!

Hard to see until you get right up to it, this traditional Cornish sheep stile leads into the second field on the walk.

About a quarter of the way up the next field, on the opposite side from the stile, go through a metal gate and cross a wooden footbridge over a stream. From there the track wends its way uphill and turns into an open field to the left, turn right and follow the line of mature sycamore, beech and oak trees along the bottom edge of the field and onto a dirt track that leads to a barn with a corrugated-iron roof and Harvose Farm.

To avoid passing immediately in front of the farmhouse, follow the footpath sign 24 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 258

When you re-emerge go through the metal five-bar gate to the left of the track rather than continuing on the track itself. (Although there’s no ‘Private – No Entry’ sign here, the other end of the track at Ventonwyn Farm is clearly marked as being private land.) Continue along the bottom edge of the field and then turn to walk up the right-hand side to a wooden gate with a public footpath sign. Go through the gate, over a small wooden bridge, and uphill along a small, narrow woodland path for a short distance.

When you come out of the woodland onto a track, turn right and go through the wooden five-bar gate directly ahead.

This is where the public footpath signs unhelpfully disappear. The tracks to the left and right immediately after the gate are marked as private land, but there’s another wooden five-bar gate directly in front of you. It’s clear from the OS map that this is a public right of way, so – even though it’s rusted very firmly shut – clamber over the gate as best you can and walk through a small copse of trees.

You’ll come out onto a gravel driveway between a large barn and the gardens of

Ventonwyn farmhouse. Walk along this driveway (it’s only 50 metres or so), then turn right onto the concreted lane.

Follow this lane for about 400 metres (1/4 mile) until you reach Trewinnow Farm. Along the way you’ll see ponds to the right that are full of waterfowl, including Canada geese and various kinds of ducks – it looks very well managed, but I haven’t been able to find out if this is part of a farm, a natural feature or some kind of bird sanctuary.

At Trewinnow Farm turn right – there are lovely views across the fields to Harvose and Ventonwyn, where you’ve just come from.

The building is thought to date from the late 17th century, but it was substantially re-built in 1812, although a settlement was first recorded here as long ago as 1334.

When you reach the gateway to the manor, turn left and walk through the farmyard and round the back of the manor house, then turn left onto a cinder track.

Follow this quiet little country lane for just over 1 km (about ½ mile). The views over arable farmland to the left, looking over to the area between Grampound and Hewas Water, are beautiful and the hedgerows are full of flowers.

Follow this past a pond – a wonderful habitat for moorhens, frogs and other aquatic creatures – and keep going until you reach the blind spot mirror that you passed near the start of the walk.

Turn right into the tree and rhododendron-lined driveway (pictured below) to the grade II-listed Garlenick Manor.

Turn left onto the road and retrace your steps past Treway Farm and back to your car.

Shindig and vintage rally

Jonathan said he was ‘over the moon’ with the responses he’s received with one person messaging him to say that the event ‘was the vaccine the village didn’t know it needed, and a great welcome to summer’. Here’s to that.

C

So, while local shanty singers Du Hag Owr were entertaining the G7 at Carbis Bay, there was ska and reggae in The Hawkins, footie in the Comrades and a shindig in the top field. Probus certainly had a weekend to remember.

The shindig was the brainchild of Jonathan and credit should go to him for organising such a brilliant event, while keeping to challenging COVID-19 regulations and guidelines.

It really was the tonic that many of us needed.

ONGRATULATIONS are due to Jonathan Keam, his son Ollie, other family members, volunteers and all those involved in putting on the Probus Shindig on 12-13th June.

The exhibits were varied, from vintage trucks to classic cars. There were many static and mobile steam engines puffing and wheezing away seemingly with their own personalities. The weather was perfect, the views were stunning, the mood was good, and it all seemed to come together to make for a very memorable weekend.

The exhibitors started arriving on Friday 11th and the camp grew (and grew) as more tractors and vintage vehicles and other exhibitors arrived, many of whom were camping. By the evening there was a very positive buzz around and several hundred from the village turned out to watch Black Velvet - a favourite opener from several Comrades Club beer festivals. It was a really good night and so lovely to see familiar faces from the village doing something social after what seems like a 15 month hibernation.

Saturday brought more sunshine and more crowds from the village and beyond. Graham Kemp did an afternoon ‘Drums for Fun’ session that the kids seemed to enjoy. The evening entertainment started with Jailhouse and concluded with the ever popular Johnny Cowling.

Midsummer Bonfire

M

EMBERS of Probus Historic Cornwall Society were invited by Redruth Old Cornwall Society to join in celebrating its traditional midsummer bonfire.

The bonfire, as is the tradition, was lit on St John’s Eve, the day of the year on which the sun is at its highest and preceded by prayers and verses in Cornish and accompanied by hot pasties. Part of the ceremony involved 'The Lady of the Flowers' carrying a bunch of herbs, some good and some bad, tied with ribbons of symbolic colours. These were thrown onto the bonfire.

Tregony View archaeology

I

F you walk between the green at Tregony View and the bridlepath leading to Parkengear Farm, you will

had been there for a few weeks and while he was planning to excavate a new area of interest. He said that so far they had found evidence of ditches, that were probably related to the Cornish Round. He had also found evidence of a fire pit, or several fire pits, but at that time, no specific evidence of any iron foundry works.

Sadly there were no Iron Age chariot wheels, Roman coins or other treasure in the area excavated, in fact nothing much of significant archaeological interest.

As to the new development site, geophysical studies have identified several areas of interest and over the

have noticed the archaeological dig that started in May. This dig is being done in advance of the building of the access road to the ‘Phase 2’ estate on the other side of the bridleway. An Iron Age Cornish Round was previously found in this area (now underneath the green area), and archaeologists were commissioned by the developers to investigate the ground before the road is built.

The Joy of Ducks

W

HEN I am not busy with parish ministry, one of my real joys in life are ducks. I currently keep two ‘flocks’ of five Khaki Campbells and eight Aylesburies.

I started keeping ducks entirely by accident. I went to collect some laying hens and the chap was selling ducks as well, and I was immediately taken by their charm. They are far more sociable than chickens and keep firmly together in their little flocks at all times, rarely separating from one another. In the photo below, you can see me holding a Campbell duck.

The Khaki Campbells were first bred in the 19th Century by a woman called, unsurprisingly, Mrs Campbell. The ducks are a crossbreed between several types of ducks, including Indian Runners and the Rouen.

The Khaki Campbell is a highly prolific layer producing over 300 eggs a year. In fact, campbells will out-lay most chickens. Their eggs are also considerably bigger! Before the modern hybrid breeds of chicken that took easily to batteries, the campbell was one of the main sources of eggs in the UK.

Historically, I know that there has been a little squeamishness about duck eggs (why I do not really know). They are bigger and richer than hen eggs and have a magnificent 'rising' quality, making them the 'self-raising flour' of the egg world! A duck egg omelette rises beautifully when cooked.

The cambells are called ‘Khaki’ because their colouring resembles the old British Army uniform colour.

Temperamentally, the Khaki Campbell is a very nervous bird. It is nearly impossible to get anywhere near them as they are so easily frightened by the slightest noise. They are a very quiet breed of duck, barely making more than a whisper of a quack.

The Aylesbury is an altogether different sort of duck. Stunning white and absolutely enormous. I collected a batch of day-old chicks in the middle of March, and they're already twice the size of my Khaki Campbells and still growing! Their size makes them look more like geese than ducks. Much more placid than the campbell, but, because of their size, a lot louder too!

The Aylesbury, as the name suggests, come originally from the town of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The ducks were first bred for meat and feathers (the pure white being in high demand in the 18th century). A fully grown duck will reach a magnificent 5 kgs and is noted for its beautifully pale, almost pink, bill.

The Aylesbury has come a little under threat from the somewhat hardier, American Pekin. The pekin looks superficially similar to the Aylesbury but has a much more yellow/orange bill and inferior quality meat.

The absolute joy of ducks comes from the distraction they provide from all the busyness. Taking time to care for my poultry keeps me closer to the natural world and away from all those things that get in the way of actually enjoying life. Letting my ducks out in the morning, shepherding them into bed at night, feeding and watering them and collecting their eggs is an absolute delight.

If life is too stressful and you need something to help you relax, get some ducks, you won't regret it.

Knit & Natter

EDNESDAY 2nd June was the first meeting of Probus’s Knit & Natter group for almost six months, albeit at socially distanced tables of no more than six. For some people who had been shielding since the start of the pandemic, it was the first Knit & Natter in more than a year. It was a great chance to catch up and see what everyone had been working on over the last few months.

Founded around ten years ago, the group meets in Probus Comrades Club on Wednesday mornings from 10 am until 12 noon for a cuppa and a chance to – well, knit and natter. It’s as much a social gathering as a crafting event, although there’s always someone on hand to offer technical help over a tricky technique or to swap patterns and ideas with. As well as knitting, people often bring along other crafts, including crochet, embroidery and bits of hand sewing. In the past, members have also put their skills to good use to raise money for worthy causes by knitting, for example, baby hats and blankets for Treliske baby unit, poppies that were sold at the Comrades Club in aid of the British Legion Poppy Appeal, and heartshaped key fobs for the charity Little Hearts Matter.

Crafts of all kinds have undergone a resurgence over the last year as people have looked for creative outlets during the various lockdowns we’ve all endured. So whether you’ve been knitting for years or have just taken it up for the first time, why not come along?

You’ll be warmly welcomed and you’ll get the chance to meet up and make friends with a lovely bunch of likeminded people.
