the company has witnessed steady growth where its fleet is concerned. This has accelerated considerably in the past year, with the company expanding into new segments, adding a Capesize and two Newcastlemax vessels to its fleet.

“The addition of three new vessels has pushed our existing fleet beyond two million deadweight tonnes of combined capacity,” Mr Shaikh explained. “As a result, we have been able to enter new sectors and stretch our capabilities more than ever before.”

Fully committed to operating sustainably, Tomini has recently partnered with Enerva Marine Group, a trusted Lloyd’s Register partner. This new relationship is set to have a significant impact on Tomini’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Tomini works with a number of excellent partners, including Republic of the Marshall Islands, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, American Bureau of Shipping and RightShip.

According to Mr Shaikh, working with RightShip has been a great experience

thanks to the company’s shared vision for safety and crew welfare.

“At Tomini, we believe that building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers and partners is crucial for a smooth operation,” said Mr Shaikh. “We achieve this through quality vendor selection, transparent communication, risk management and collaborative innovation, plus mutual trust and respect.

“By collaborating with these esteemed organisations, we have successfully cultivated enduring partnerships that foster mutual growth and development.”

New beginnings

and wellbeing this new centre will provide in-person training for Tomini’s seafarers.

“The opening of the Seafarer Training Centre underscores our commitment to developing people, both onshore and onboard our vessels,” Mr Shaikh explained. “Investing in training is paramount for us as it not only enhances the skills and expertise of our seafarers, but also ensures the highest standards of safety, efficiency and environmental responsibility.”

The broader Tomini Group also hosts several events to boost familial culture. Last September, it hosted a two-day crewing seminar in UAE, which was set up to develop relationships and gave the sea and shore staff the opportunity to share valuable insights and experiences.

“The crewing seminar was a significant step towards fostering unity and collaboration amongst our technical team, seafarers and charterers,” Mr Shaikh continued. “Such events play a crucial role in building strong relationships and cama -

raderie amongst our workforce. This is especially important, because we have several offices in multiple countries, and it is important for the office workers and seafarers to meet in person.

“The event itself had several key highlights, including an emphasis on health, safety and environmental consciousness; we also conducted interactive workshops and team-building exercises to strengthen bonds and enhance professional development. It was a real success and contributed to the vibrant and inclusive culture that we cherish here at Tomini.”

Valiant crews

The workforce has always been a top priority for Tomini, and the company’s familial ethos plays an important factor in ensuring their wellbeing. It is this basis of teamwork and training that has led to several key lifechanging moments for Tomini’s Crews.

Back in 2023, the company’s bulk carrier, Tomini Dynasty, came across 11 Malaysian Nationals who were stranded at sea. Using their safety training, the crew on board were able to think fast and carry out a rescue mission.

“Hearing of the rescue mission conducted by the crew onboard Tomini Dynasty fills me with great pride,” Mr Shaikh explained. “Their compassion and well-honed training exemplify our crews’ calibre. Beyond maritime efficiency, this incident also showcases their commitment to safety and welfare.

“Our crews serve as the heart of our company, and their ability to respond proficiently in critical situations reflects our meticulous training. This achievement underscores the positive impact our crews make and is a welcome recognition of Tomini Dynasty’s humanitarian spirit.”

Award winning

Certainly a busy year for Tomini Group, 2023 also saw the company receive three prestigious awards. These perfectly reflected the dedication and hard work of everyone at Tomini.

“2023 was a very successful year for us,” said Mr Shaikh. “We took home awards at the IBJ Awards, TMS Awards and the Annual Global Economic Awards, thanks to the dedication and flawless work of our crews. I believe it is also thanks to our corporate philosophy, which is always reflected in how we work and invest.”

Tomini also became an Associate Member of the Emirates Shipping Association, providing it with a much stronger local maritime presence.

“Being an Associate Member has perfectly positioned us at the forefront of industry insights and regulatory changes,” Mr Shaikh continued. “It has also provided us with a platform for valuable partnerships and underscores our dedication to fostering long-lasting relationships within the local community. Whatever issue is being discussed in the UAE maritime industry, we have made sure we will be at the heart of the conversation.”

According to Mr Shaikh, this year is set to be just as eventful, with more expansion lined up: “We remain optimistic about our prospects for continued growth

throughout 2024 and beyond. The global shipping industry is dynamic, and we are strategically positioned to capitalise on emerging opportunities.

“Of course, our continued commitment to innovation, sustainability and operational excellence will be the driving force behind us.” n
