Based in Spain, Pasaban provides total and customised solutions for the paper and pulp industry, supplying the leading paper and cardboard groups with a broad portfolio of products. Sales & Marketing Director Carlos Muriel outlined the company’s commitment to sustainability and its focus on supporting the customer. Report by Phil Nicholls.
Pasaban has fully embraced the principles of sustainable operation.
In addition to meeting very high standards regarding environmental aspects, Pasaban has also taken direct action to support creating a more sustainable world.
“We pay special attention to contributing to a reduced carbon footprint, especially for our customers,” explained Sales &

Marketing Director Carlos Muriel. “A good example of this is the improvement of regenerative energy systems in our hardware, where the kinetic energy of moving parts of machines is recovered through banks of capacitors. This energy is then reused in repetitive high-frequency cycles.
“In this way, we lower our customers’ electrical consumption, which undoubt -

edly contributes to reducing their carbon footprint.”
Founded in 1928, this family-owned company is based in Tolosa, in the Basque Country. Originally a mechanical workshop that repaired and designed auxiliary machines for the paper industry, the portfolio at Pasaban has steadily evolved.
By combining expertise and innovation, Pasaban has achieved unique developments in the field of security and banknote papers. This involved the expansion to a second site for the Automation and Control Division, plus the creation of a Service Department to meet the needs of the market, staffed by experts who ensure a quick response to problems.
Today, Pasaban remains a family business with an international character. With 150 workers, it enjoys an average annual turnover of €45 million and exports over 95% of its goods and services annually.
Innovative machinery
The Pasaban portfolio is made up of a range of machines such as Sheeters/Cutters, Winders/Slitter Rewinders and Ream Wrappers. The company offers foil stamping lines and machines capable of applying security elements for security papers such as banknotes. Other options include Paper/Board Reels transport lines, Reams Transport lines, Stacks transport lines and other auxiliary equipment.
The company also provides complete turnkey services to clients. Pasaban offers a package, from a detailed analysis of needs to the finished design.
“Our range of products and services consists of highly flexible and versatile equipment,” said Mr Muriel. “Pasaban machines have the most sophisticated capabilities, always with a high degree of machine quality. Precision is a key part of our philosophy.”
Given the company’s long history, the capabilities of Pasaban’s machinery have developed over the years. This included the transition from analogue to digital, along with the increase in automation within the industry. During this period, the time required to prepare a machine to cut the next format has dropped from 20 minutes to an impressive three minutes on Pasaban’s advanced machines.
“As a company, we have adapted to these changes in an intelligent way,” Mr Muriel continued. “Both from the perspective of the manufacturer and the end user of our machines, we have achieved completely open and scalable configurations and control architectures for customers.”
With such an impressive portfolio at Pasaban, it is not easy to pick out a feature project. However, Mr Muriel wanted to highlight the company’s innovative work in the security sector: “We are the only supplier of multi-finishing processes such as rewinding and the application of security elements including foils and the generation of windows using laser technology instead of conventional means like a punch-die.
“Pasaban is also expert with the printing of iridescent inks and cutting sheets in register to produce a watermark.
