It’s that time of year again when expectations are high for fantastic weather so that the myriad of festivals, regattas, weddings, outdoor evenings and sports can be enjoyed whilst we bask in the sun. We are eternal optimists in our expectations and some events do get the best that the weather has to offer. There is a silver lining to the rainclouds, the mix of rain and sun has ensured a bumper crop of strawberries which small fingers have picked and the sheer pleasure of home grown, almost by accident and despite the accidents {of being trodden on and the enthusiastic picking of the unripe} we have enjoyed meals with our own produce. We

can see the promise of apples on our fruit trees and our vegetable seeds have grown quickly enough for the children to see the result of their haphazard sewing abilities... the wonder of something so small producing something as big as a pea plant or a carrot. There’s the good fortune of mixed weather! We can help children to focus on the detail of the natural world if they are in it, a place where we meet nature in its own space; where there are connections between the shell and the sand, the rose and the thorn, the leaf and its tree, the seed head and the flower, the raindrops and the puddles. The shapes, colours and experiences we encounter cannot be replicated indoors, no matter

how beautiful the display. Children gain an understanding of the world around them from being little explorers of the natural world and they have a fascination with all aspects of it from a very young age, something which cannot be gained from plastic and activities indoors. Rain never stops outdoor play it just adds to it... Making the experiences real is the stuff of memories and we need all the things the weather throws at us for that. Seasonal Top Tips: The lawn is probably not as green now as it was a month or two ago, but there are many products available from garden centres that will feed the lawn and green it up again. It’s the Nitrogen in the feed that makes the leaves grow lush and green, so be ready with the mower when it kicks in. There are ‘aftercut’ products available with less nitrogen for steadier growth and greening and it won’t grow too fast afterwards. Don’t forget a lawn cut once a

week will green up quicker after cutting than one cut once a fortnight, and if it’s been dry a good soaking may be the simple answer to green up the lawn. Keep up with the weeding, hand weed perennial weeds around plants like dandelions making sure not to snap the root as it will just re-grow, and hoe off the annual weeds like groundsel and shepherds purse. After this you can still apply a bark mulch which will help keep the weeds down through the summer. Basically if you can see soil the weed seeds will grow on it, so the mulch should be deep enough to stop the light getting through, 2” is perfect. Don’t forget to dead head flowers that have faded, especially bedding Geraniums, and roses, as it will encourage the plants to throw up more buds. And here is a real general rule from me on the shrub pruning front for the novice gardener, if it’s finished

flowering and there are no more buds on the way, it’s probably the best time to prune it! Favourites: Here’s a plant that I have not seen for years, and by chance saw grown perfectly in a garden in Bourne End open to the public for the local air ambulance society, (which incidentally these gardens are worth a visit for ideas, and it’s for a good cause). It’s a herbaceous perennial, and you need some space for this one, called Crambe cordifolia, which has large leaves and a mass of white dainty flowers like Gypsophila, and grows a good 4ft wide flowering to 5 or 6ft. This specimen was situated perfectly, towards the back of a large herbaceous border fronted by purple and lilac hues of herbaceous decreasing in size down to the front of the border. Our library is beautiful and it is like stepping back in time. We even have a beautiful red telephone box in our courtyard for added charm. Inside the library is filled with beautiful old wooden beams, a couple of sofas and in the winter we light the wood burning stove. What could be nicer? West Wycombe Community Library is a charity based Library in Swan Yard, West Wycombe, just off West Wycombe High Street. The council closed the library in 2006 and it was re-opened by an action group in 2007. All the library books have been donated by local people and we function by fundraising. Some of our events include a VE Day dance, quizzes, book sales and donations. The library is fully staffed by volunteers and is open every day during the summer. We are always looking for more volunteers for helping in the library and for fundraising events. If you are able to help for a couple of hours a week why not pop in and see Vicky, the Library Manager who would be happy to meet with you for a chat about what you would like to do as a volunteer.

We are open all day from 9-5 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Wednesdays and Fridays we open from 9-1, Saturdays from 10-1 and on Sundays during the summer we open from 2-5 for cream teas. We run a coffee shop with freshly brewed coffee, a selection of teas and soft drinks. We also offer light lunches - lovely sandwiches with salad, toasted sandwiches, sausage, bacon or egg sandwiches, cream teas, delicious home baked cakes baked by Gay, Denise, Vicky, David and other volunteers. We have a range of gifts for sale made by our volunteers. Denise produces beautiful hand made cards, hand painted boxes, lovely book bags, candles, homemade jams and marmalade. Sarah has a fantastic selection of homemade chocolate in all shapes and forms from handbags to garden tools. Charmaine has a lovely display of glass earrings and pendants, Pearlie has made some nice aprons, decorated candles and fancy envelopes. Vicky has produced some bath bombs and bath soaps. Dance is a really good way to improve your balance, posture and flexibility in a fun and social setting. Performing to music encourages confidence and creativity, which along with a good technique, can go towards achieving medals and certificates from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. I have been teaching dance in the Marlow area since 1985 and many of my students have gained places in top colleges, including the Central School of Ballet in London. If you are not sure which dance style is for you, then why not come along to our Dance Summer School from Monday 15th - Friday 19th August at the Methodist Church Hall, Marlow. We will introduce you to beginner’s level Ballet, Tap, Modern and Flamenco dance as well as having fun making headdresses, using stage make –up and much much more… If you would like more information about our dance school, or our Dance Summer School, please contact me on 01494 882419.
