It s a New Year, Get in Gear!

E-Stem What is E-STEM? On May 7, 2012, the Prior LakeSavage Area Schools school board approved a proposal that will make all of our K-5 elementary schools the first district-wide E-STEM schools in the state of Minnesota. E-STEM stands for Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The district defines E-STEM as follows: An interdisciplinary approach to instruction and learning focused on inquiry and real world problem-solving in the 21st Century, applying hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematical practices with projects and field experiences related to the environment.

E-STEM has proven to be important to you, the families we serve, and our Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools as a whole. As such, we’ve carried over our E-STEM theme and class designations from the fall catalogs to the programming in our current offerings. You will once again see the E-STEM classes noted with a special icon to make them easily E-STEM identifiable for all of us. But that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped creating and everything you find is a duplicate or a repeat! We’ve been working with our instructors to continue to push toward new, fresh, and exciting offerings, and we hope you will see that reflected in many of our listings. We’re already gearing up for a busy and exciting Winter and Spring at Community Education. Just as gears require that all pieces work together, we are working hard to provide the smoothest possible transition from school time to high quality, FUN Community Education programming. We hope you’ll Get in Gear and register early for several of our opportunities. Remember, early registration helps to ensure that your children are not disappointed when a class cancels or is full when you attempt to register. Sincerely, Carrie Dobie Youth Programs Coordinator

Early Registration is Requested If minimum enrollment requirements for Community Ed classes have not been met a few days prior to the class’s scheduled start date, the classes will need to have to be cancelled. While we try to wait as long as possible to cancel a class, minimum numbers of participants are required to offer our self-supporting community education programs. Out of the fees collected, instructors, monitors, supplies and custodians have to be paid. If we fall below the minimum required, we are simply unable to run a class. Late registrations that often could have been the difference in whether or not a class runs are not only disappointing to us but even more so to the kids that are looking forward to their classes. Please register early; it will mean less disappointment for your family, and less frustration for other families as well!

Free Tuition for Full-Day Kindergarten Begins Next School Year Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools has a tradition of offering innovative programs to meet family needs. For the last few years it has been an Dr. Sue Ann Gruver important goal to fund Full-Day Kindergarten Superintendent for all of our families. Now, thanks to a state funding bill that was passed last spring, this goal will become a reality for the 2014-15 school year. In addition, we are looking to potentially offer a second tuition-free kindergarten option next year, Full-Day Spanish Immersion. Language Immersion is an approach to second language instruction in which the usual learning activities are conducted in a second language. At PLSAS our vision is to create a program that combines both Spanish Immersion and English instruction during the day for kindergarten students.
