Summer

Preschool-Grade 12 Enrichment & Recreation Youth Programs

The Great Prior Lake-Savage Get Together... All Summer Long For many families, the State Fair is an end of the summer opportunity to have a lot of fun, try new things, meet new people, and create happy memories. If you’ve been to the State Fair, in Minnesota or in another state, you probably have lots of stories you can share about the experiences you had there. While Community Education is certainly very different than a State Fair (our fun lasts year round!), we do share a lot of similarities. There is lots to see in each catalog of offerings, and you’re sure to learn something new if you give one (or more!) of our programs a try. If these are your State Fair Favorites, try these suggestions: Music, Concerts, Talent Shows, People Watching! Summer Band, Stage Band, Little Kicksters Jazz and Dance, Laker Dance Camp, the Summer Theatre Workshop, or Frozen Musical Theater Animal Barns! 4-H Summer Camps, Amazing Animals Around the World, 101 Dalmatians, Camp Caterpillar, or Horses, Horses, and More Horses Drawing Camp The Food! Cooking classes! Try the Cooking Challenge or a Way-Cool Cooking School Camp. The Art Building, Photographs! The Messiest Art Camp Ever, Super Summer Art, or Glitz and Glam The Giant Slide, the Midway! Our Play section! Lacrosse, Tennis, Multi-Sport Camp, Soccer! These camps are great for those of you that don’t like to sit still! Or, start learning robotics and engineering principles to discover how these rides work by taking one of the classes in our experiment section.

STEM

STEM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, encourages and promotes critical thinking skills in students through the use of engaged inquiry based learning. During this learning, students tackle a variety of activities and topics within an interdisciplinary STEM approach asking powerful, insightful questions to develop solutions and seek answers. Many of the classes listed on the Experiment pages of this catalog engage aspects of STEM.

Points are awarded each time a robot scores into a zone or crate, or each time a robot hangs from a truss. The entire game is constricted to a time limit of 90 seconds. Camp includes instruction from King TeC members in the areas of programming and electrical and mechanic engineering. Each team of 3-6 students will be assigned a KING TeC mentor. The final class will include a tournament to showcase your team’s robot design in competition with the other teams and robots. You will also be given glimpses of being on KING TeC and the team’s large robots. Students with all levels of experience are encouraged to register. This is more than building with Legos. The competition includes the building of a group robot, a research project, and the development of a presentation. FIRST recommends successful teams meet for a minimum of 40 hours between the time kits arrive in early September and the date of the competition in November or December. First Lego League Coaches: All teams are youth led, but each requires 2 adult volunteer coaches. Training sessions are available and no experience is necessary. Teams cannot run without volunteer coaches. Team entry fees for optional regional competitions will be required if teams choose to compete. A Fab Lab is a small-scale Fabrication Laboratory that blends engineering and innovation in a hands-on environment where students can make almost anything using some of the same Dr. Sue Ann Gruver technology and equipment found in Minnesota businesses and Superintendent used by today’s work force. Students will be able to develop their critical thinking and communications skills, expand their creativity and collaborate with their peers while being introduced to hands-on, realworld experiences they will encounter in college, on the job and in life. As an E-STEM (Environmental Education - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) district, our students are accustomed to learning that is focused on inquiry and real world problem-solving. The creation of a Fab Lab further enhances our curriculum and commitment to E-STEM learning through the high school years. In the spirit of learning, we are looking ahead at the possibility of opening up the Fab Lab after school for Community Education classes as well as scout groups, robotics teams, local artists and more, to encourage entrepreneurs to create products and, in turn, create jobs. More information will be available in 2015. In the meantime, our Community Education programs offer a wide variety of classes that tie in with our district’s E-STEM Focus and new 1:1 technology initiative that expands the use of technology for every student.
