Picture Perfect Memories in the Making

2013

Featured Classes: Charlotte’s Web Fair Camp

If you’re planning a family trip this summer, you’re likely to take lots of pictures and create a lot of lasting memories. For most of us though, there is a lot of summer between the family vacations. Regardless of your vacation schedule, you’ll want to provide lots of great opportunities for your kids to remember about the summer.

P. 5

Charlotte and Wilbur know there is more to the fair than some pigs! 4-H members know too, and many spend months preparing for the County Fair.

Camp Eco-Adventure

P. 7

This summer, Eco Camp meets E-STEM (Environment, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) by presenting you, the campers, with issues that threaten our beautiful environment. You’ll be given materials and encouraged to ask questions and create your own designs to help solve these complex issues.

Community Education Youth Programs offers more programs in the summer than any other time of the year. We’re confident we have something the children in your family will be excited about, and we think they’ll finish the programs with new and lasting memories and friendships. If you have little ones, don’t miss the ECFE offerings on page 19. You’ll also find offerings for children ages 3-5 throughout the catalog. Just look for the icon! Parents of middle school children, you’ll also find offerings throughout the catalog, but don’t miss the Teens and PreTeens offerings on pages 16-17. Happy Summer, and Happy Memory Making! Carrie Dobie Youth Programs Coordinator

You are invited to attend a three-day camp put on by the Laker Dance Team! Participants will be invited to perform at a Blue & Gold PLHS football game.

Do you always have to be so dramatic! If you just can’t help yourself, this is the summer activity for you! In the play Original Fidgety Fairy Tales, 3 childhood favorites get a twist.

Projects will be fired and glazed at the instructor’s studio and returned to Community Education within four weeks. These programs were designed to locally educate youth to appreciate the environment around them and to become future stewards of our beautiful and vital natural resources. Each year, camp is changed to offer a unique opportunity to returning campers. Both camps provide guided lessons and explorations led by licensed teachers, as well as time to further explore areas of interest unique to the campers in the group.

Cosmic Chase Camp-Robotics Programming with KING TeC 2169 Members (Ages 9-12)

This robotics camp is engineered to challenge your mind in programming, mechanical building, and much more. With an out-ofthis-world theme, the game course challenges you to think outside the box, but inside the field. Each team will design, create, and program a robot to race around the field solar system and score as many points as possible. Points are awarded each time a taped point marker is passed. After turning around the course’s first curve, the robots encounter a tape-like obstacle. The entire game is constricted to a time limit of 90 seconds. Camp includes instruction from King TeC members in the areas of programming and electrical and mechanic engineering. Each team of 3-6 students will be assigned a KING TeC mentor. The final class will include a tournament to showcase your team’s robot design in competition with the other teams and robots. Students with all levels of experience are encouraged to register. You won’t leave with a robot, but you will leave with a T-shirt in your size if you register and provide your shirt size by July 1st. T-shirts are not guaranteed after that date. Please bring a nut free snack and beverage to camp each day. #2875 Mon.-Fri., July 22-26 8:30am-12:30pm PLHS Commons 5 Sessions $99 Instructors: King TeC Members and Advisors

Capture Summer (Ages 12-18)

What do you and other kids know about the options for youth activities during the summer? What do you want adults to know about what you are doing, or are looking for, to keep busy? Tell the community through a video! Using digital cameras and iPads, instructors will get you started and then set you lose in the schools to capture what you see- through your own eyes and voice. By the end you will have created an iMovie to help Community Education get a fresh look at programming. This is a great opportunity to earn Service/Volunteer hours. Applications will be available in late April. Videos may be used by ISD 719. #2902 Dates, Times, & Locations TBD Multiple Sessions Free Students will be selected for this group based on an application. Call to receive an application.

Learn about all aspects of being part of a musical production, including memorizing lines, designing sets, blocking, creating costumes, applying make-up, and operating the curtain, sound, and lights. In the play Original Fidgety Fairy Tales, 3 childhood favorites get a twist: Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Handsome, and Rapunzel. More information about the production can be found at http://www. macmh.org/fidgety-fairy-tales. Auditions will be held the first 2 days of camp. This camp is designed for fun, but to create a production we can all be proud of, you will be expected to work hard and attend all sessions. Summer Safety For Your Child’s Safety . . . In most cases, Community Education provides a Building Monitor or other staff person to be on site when we are offering programs at ISD 719 facilities. These individuals supervise a building or general area, and any Community Education events occurring at that time. Building Monitors are CPR and First Aid Certified and are also available to assist instructors, participants, and families with sign in and sign out before and after class, as well as a variety of other needs. Please feel free to contact the Community Education office or the Building Monitor if you have any questions about summer programming. Help Us Ensure the Safety of Your Child. Please Follow these Class Safety and Behavior Procedures:

• Provide an accessible daytime phone number and an additional emergency contact when registering your child for programs.

• Drop off your child in the classroom on time each session.

• Pick up your child in the classroom at the class ending time. If you cannot pick up on time, you are expected to make other arrangements for your child ahead of time. Late pick up fees will apply.

• If someone other than a parent will be picking up your child from class, please let the instructor and/or a Community Education staff person know ahead of time.

• If it is okay for your child (age 10 or over) to walk or bike home following a Summer class, please indicate that on the registration form. Please note that children under 10 must be picked up in the classroom or class meeting space immediately following class. Youth will not be allowed to walk or bike home in the dark.

• Inform the instructor AND a Community Education staff person of any allergies, special needs, or behavioral concerns that may help us to provide the best environment and instruction for your child and the other students enrolled.

• The behavior of students is expected to be appropriate for the class learning environment. The instructor and Community Education staff reserve the right to dismiss students immediately, without a refund, when behavior is not appropriate or jeopardizes the safety of them or other students. Should this become necessary, parents will be contacted and expected to pick up children immediately.

Please Note: These procedures have been modified for Summer 2013.

Students who are ill or miss for other reasons not considered excused absences (such as a doctor’s appointment), will not be allowed to participate in Community Education programs on that day.

Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather or for other unavoidable reasons. These sessions are made up whenever possible. If school closes during the day due to bad weather, Community Education will cancel all activities. Listen to WCCO 830 AM radio for official school closure notices. Call 952.226.0080 for evening or weekend cancellation information. Discounts - Sign up with a friend or sibling by mail, on the phone, or in person, and you’ll each get 10% off your total fee (maximum discount of $15). You must be taking the same classes and request the discount at the time of registration. This discount cannot be combined with any other coupon or offer. Not valid on ECFE or Driver’s Education classes or where otherwise noted. All UCare Minnesota members may take up to a $15 discount per class. Any coupons used will be accepted with registration form by mail or dropped off only. Non-Endorsement Policy - Prior Lake-Savage Community Education contracts with specialists in their fields who are interested in presenting classes in their areas of expertise to the community. We do not endorse the opinions or business affiliations of the instructors. Class Confirmations - Community Education does not mail class confirmations.
