Early Childhood Screening - 952.226.0975

The early childhood years, from birth to the start of kindergarten, is an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is doing at age three to four. The screening process identifies, at an early age, possible health or learning concerns so children can get help before starting school. All children need to be screened before enrolling in kindergarten. If your child is of screening age and you’d like to schedule an appointment, or if you are conscientiously opposed to screening, please contact our office. Email: www.ecscreening@priorlake-savage.k12.mn.us

Make Almost Anything! Fab Lab Coming to Prior Lake High School. The PLHS addition will be open this fall and with it comes an exciting new concept for students called a Fab Lab. A Fab Lab is a small-scale Fabrication Dr. Sue Ann Gruver Laboratory that blends engineering and Superintendent innovation in a hands-on environment where students can make almost anything using some of the same technology and equipment found in Minnesota businesses and used by today’s work force. Students will be able to develop their critical thinking and communications skills, expand their creativity and collaborate with their peers while being introduced to hands-on, real-world experiences they will encounter in college, on the job and in life. As an E-STEM (Environmental Education - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) district, our students are accustomed to learning that is focused on inquiry and real world problem-solving. The creation of a Fab Lab further enhances our curriculum and commitment to E-STEM learning through the high school years. In the spirit of learning, we are looking ahead at the possibility of opening up the Fab Lab after school for Community Education classes as well as scout groups, robotics teams, local artists and more, to encourage entrepreneurs to create products and, in turn, create jobs. More information will be available in 2015. In the meantime, our Community Education programs offer a wide variety of classes that tie in with our district’s E-STEM Focus and new 1:1 technology initiative that expands the use of technology for every student. From adult programs offering iPad classes to a wide variety of youth robotics programs, and the popular Camp Eco-Adventures, Community Education has so much to offer learners of every age and ability. Take some time to find a Community Education class that is right for you. I hope you will join us in the fall as we unveil our new PLHS addition and Fab Lab!

We’re Looking For YOU... The person with a special interest, talent or subject knowledge that you’d like to share with others. We are looking for teachers willing to add a little “class” to the lives in Prior Lake-Savage. You don’t have to be a licensed teacher. Enthusiasm combined with knowledge of a subject or skill in a special interest area will be enough to get you started. Those of us in Community Education are here to provide assistance on class content, handout production and more. We’ll let you know what we expect, how we will promote your classes and do all we can to help you succeed. You’ll receive an instructor’s handbook with all the practical details you need to know, feedback from class participants and appreciation for your efforts. But it’s not just about Community Ed, it’s about you contributing to your community to make it a better place to be and your own personal growth.

We can’t do it without YOU! Call us at 952-226-0080. Let’s get together and talk possibilities.

Advisory Councils

are active taskoriented groups who make recommendations about policies, procedures, program offerings, budgets, and more for ISD 719 Community Education Services programs. Together these groups determine what resources could be utilized to meet the needs and interests of community members without duplicating the efforts provided by others.

If you would be interested in working with a council to address the lifelong learning needs of our district, please call Leanne Weyrauch, Director at 952-226-0082, to request an application for membership.

Instructor Spotlight Peter Wong Photography

See page 24 for his classes in this catalog. Photography has been a passion for me for as long as I can remember. In 1969 I left my home country of Malaysia and moved to Minnesota to further my education at the University of Minnesota and the College of St. Scholastica. I majored in Mathematics and Physics and minored in Creative and Dramatic Arts. After receiving a Bachelors degree, I continued on to graduate school for two semesters, concentrating on Fine Art. Following my formal schooling, I moved to Minneapolis and entered the “real world”. I worked for a photo lab, and moonlighted evenings and nights assisting commercial photographers, always asking questions and absorbing as much knowledge as I could. In 1980 I took the big step and started my own studio, working mainly for advertising agencies and corporations. In 1988 I was introduced to golf and it quickly became my other passion. I worked to learn both its history and to develop the ability to hit such a tiny white ball as far, and as accurately, as possible. Fortunately, both my passions dovetailed. This helped me decide to take another big step and I left the commercial advertising world to concentrate on creating beautiful images of golf courses. Since 1999, I have been photographing golf courses around the country and soon, around the world. I hope you enjoy my images as much as I enjoy creating them! Awards: The image of Spring Hill Golf Club, Hole 13. * The Curator’s Best of Show award at the Academy of Golf Art 1st annual Juried Show in May of 2005, held at the Jack Nicklaus Museum in Columbus, OH. * Best of Show in photography award at the Academy of Golf Art 1st annual Juried Show in May of 2005, held at the Jack Nicklaus Museum in Columbus, OH. • 1953 to 1969: Born and raised on the island of Malaysian Borneo. High school education at All Saint’s School. • 1969 to 1975: Duluth, Minnesota at the College of St. Scholastic and UMD. Graduated with a BA in Mathematics and a minor in Creative and Dramatic Arts. Graduate School at the U of Wisconsin, Superior Fine Arts Dept. • 1975 to 1980: Worked at a Color Lab (Supra Color) and as an assistant for local advertising photographers. • 1980 to 1999: Owned a commercial/advertising studio in the warehouse district in Minneapolis. Clients: 3M, Anderson Windows, Marvin Windows, Harley Davidson Motorcycles, General Mills, Federal Cartridge, Lund Boats and local and national advertising agencies. • 1999 to 2008: Photographing golf courses and resorts around the United States and the World.

See what students of Peter’s are saying: “Was a great start to using the digital camera. Learned more in 4 weeks than in the last 2 years. Thank you.” “I could not say enough about this class. I have attended many photography classes and have never learned like I did in this class. ” “ The instructor is an amazing talent and professionally respected. I have never taken a Community Education class with such a highly trained instructor.” Visit www.priorlakesavagece.com - 952-226-0080
