History

The John and Olive Diefenbaker House was the residence of former Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker from 1947-1957. Diefenbaker served as a Member of Parliament for Prince Albert for several years and as Prime Minister from 1957-1963. On January 12, 2018, Diefenbaker House was designated a National Historic Site. It joins Keyhole Castle and the Arts Centre as National Historic Sites in Prince Albert. Diefenbaker house was built in 1912 and donated to the City of Prince Albert by John and Olive Diefenbaker in 1975 to be converted into a museum. It opened to the public in 1983 and is operated by the Prince Albert Historical Society. The museum is furnished with Diefenbaker’s personal articles and houses artifacts, documents, and photographs of Canada’s thirteenth Prime Minister. Museums PRINCE ALBERT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
First established in 1886, the Prince Albert Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in Western Canada. The Society made its home in the original fire hall at 10 River Street East beginning in 1977. Today over 15,000 photographs, 300,000 negatives, and 15,000 documents are kept there. These records are a significant source of information on Prince Albert, the surrounding region, and all of Canada. *Museums are open daily May 21 to August 30, 2019

Prince Albert is full of history. Visit some of our city's historical sites to immerse yourself in how Prince Albert came to be and what continues to define the city.
Canadian Northern Railway Swing Bridge, completed in 1909 (west of
Diefenbaker bridge at river front) was originally a joint railway and road bridge. The traffic lanes were used until 1960 when the Diefenbaker Bridge opened. The unique centre swing span permitted steamboats to pass through and was in use until 1918. Until the railway bridge was built, cable ferries were used to cross the river. Immigration Hall
Immigration Hall, built in
1929 and designated a Provincial Heritage Property in 2018, is located at the corner of 15th Street East and 1st Avenue East. It was built in 1929 and provided temporary accommodations for new immigrants during the settlement boom of the early 20th century.
La Colle Falls on the North Saskatchewan River is a partially completed
remnant of the attempt to attract business to the area by bringing cheap hydro electric power to Prince Albert in 1909-14. The construction project was initiated during the boom of the early 19th century but abandoned during the economic crash of the next decade. Site is inaccessible in bad weather.
Prince Albert Armoury is a
Medieval Revival Style building built in 1915 by the Federal Government. It is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building located on the city's exhibition grounds.
Prince Albert Arts Centre, a
National Historic Site on Central Avenue at 10th Street, was built during the settlement boom in 1893 as a town hall and opera house. Famous Canadian poet and recitalist Pauline Johnson graced the stage on a number of occasions.

at Central Avenue was erected by the Prince Albert Historical Society in 1922 to recognize the Nisbet party’s arrival in 1866.
St. Mary’s Anglican Church and Cemetery, a municipal heritage property, located 1.5 km west of the city was built in 1875. The cemetery is the final resting place for many early settlers.

Heritage Property built in 1905, is located on the grounds of the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre. Polygon buildings were occasionally built on fair grounds in Canada. A twostorey one, however, makes it very unique. The Ladies' Section of the Lorne Agricultural Society initiated its construction for displaying their produce, needlework, baking and horticultural goods. It is the only surviving building of its type in the province.
Steamboats were a common sight on the North Saskatchewan River from the
1870s to 1918. The flat bottomed paddlewheelers were used to transport goods and passengers before railways were built between Grand Rapids, Manitoba, and Fort Edmonton. For more information, visit the Prince Albert Historical Museum at 10 River Street East.
The York Boat at 2nd Avenue and Marquis Road is a replica of a Hudson’s
Bay Company freight carrier that could be poled over shallow water, used with a square sail and stand up to rough conditions. In the 1880s they were replaced by steamships on the larger rivers and lakes.

Downtown Prince Albert is a hub where culture, history and business meet. Home to over 300 businesses, it offers a distinctive feel with shopping, dining, attractions and service businesses. Carolyn Carleton, Executive Director of the Prince Albert Downtown Improvement District (PADBID), sees the downtown as a community full of experiences, “It’s a destination and meeting place. You can find unique shops with local goods, great customer service and a personalized feel in the shops downtown.” PADBID was established in 2004 to create a vibrant and prosperous downtown district. Today, Carleton is working to build on downtown events and experiences to continue this vision. “We’re creating things for people to do. Come out and enjoy them, explore downtown,” she encourages. She is optimistic about the recent growth of events in the downtown as well as recent announcements that may reshape its core and image. UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN OPENING DOWNTOWN CAMPUS The University of Saskatchewan announced in March 2018 that they will be opening a campus in downtown Prince Albert in the fall of 2020.

The campus will offer classes in a variety of specialties including Dentistry, Nursing, Arts & Science and more. The campus will bring together students already studying in the city at other locations and will allow the U of S to grow its offerings in Prince Albert. The recent announcement has created excitement and potential for downtown. According to Carleton, more businesses are looking to open downtown due to the number of students expected at the campus. There has also been a renewed interest in creating livable spaces for working professionals and students. She also anticipates the campus and influx of students will change the vibe of downtown; with added foot traffic day and night, it will help create an inviting environment and sense of community. CENTRAL AVENUE REDESIGN The City of Prince Albert has also started working on a Central Avenue redesign. Residents were presented four streetscape options in a 2018 public feedback survey by the City, for a redesign of the downtown corridor. Of the options presented, the most popular features angled parking on one side of the street, one lane of traffic and wider sidewalks for pedestrians, patios and events. Carleton anticipates that the redesign will invite people to come downtown, “it creates more of a community feel, an environment to walk around and explore,� she adds. The downtown will still be accessible and welcoming during construction, as work will be done in stages. This will be the first major update to Central Avenue since the early 1980s. Although it will likely be a few more years before the makeover gets underway due to planning and budget processes, the announcement offers optimism and excitement for a newer, more modern and inviting space to shop, dine, work and play.

STREET FAIR JUNE 15, 2019 from 10am – 6pm This free, fun, family festival features sidewalk sales, bouncy castles, food trucks, a Farmer’s Market, live entertainment, face painting, free entrance to the Historical Museum, cars and much more. Street Fair is one of the fastest growing events in Prince Albert with over 18 000 people attending in 2018. It brings people together and showcases the beautiful downtown core. The event encourages residents and visitors to spend time downtown and explore the many local shops and restaurants. It is an all-ages event with music, food, shopping and activities, spread out over Central Avenue and the Riverbank. SUMMER ON THE SQUARE Every Wednesday morning in July and August, Memorial Square is the place to be. Enjoy local produce, baking and local goods from the Farmer’s Market plus take part in children’s activities, games and crafts. New for 2019, you can expect more activities for all ages and special weekly features.
DOWNTOWN ART WALK The first Thursday of each month from June through September, take part in the Downtown Art Walk. Visit art galleries, shops, and businesses downtown during your self-guided tour. Arts and Culture showcase and celebrate our city's diversity. Prince Albert is a multicultural community with Indigenous roots that are reflected through our events, community commitments and history. The Northern Lights Casino Thanksgiving Powwow, held bi-annually, is a cultural competition Pow Wow featuring dancers and regalia from all over North America. Events like Tapestrama, a festival of food, music and dance are a celebration of diversity. Where the performing arts meet, the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts offers a chance for self expression through arts and culture. The EA Rawlinson Centre is Prince Albert’s hub for arts and culture activities. The venue is home to the Mann Art Gallery and the John G. and Olive Diefenbaker Theatre and hosts a variety of events including professional shows, community events, art shows, conventions and more, to a tune of over 250 events each year. Cara Stelmaschuk, Marketing and Events Coordinator for the Rawlinson Centre says the venue is a gathering place, “It’s a beautiful facility for special events like festivals, grads, dance recitals, weddings and meetings. It’s a milestone centre for the events of life and the chance to enjoy a show. A place to celebrate arts and culture and accomplishments.” The 600-seat theatre is the only professional theatre in Prince Albert, showcasing everything from plays and performances like Cirque Eloize to comedy and concerts. Well-known acts and up and coming artists frequent the venue. “We host some outstanding acts on the cusp of being regular radio play,” Stelmaschuk says. She encourages people to

venture out of their comfort zone to discover some of these amazing artists. Recent performers include Kip Moore, Brett Kissel, Jill Barber, George Canyon, Terra Lightfoot, The Trews and Corb Lund. The Rawlinson Centre was recently named 2018 Venue of the Year at the Saskatchewan Country Music Association Awards. Stelmaschuk raves about the quality and features of the facility, “It’s a professional theatre with a fly tower, catwalk, beautiful seating and the sound, the sound is amazing. It’s a point of pride to have this calibre of theatre.” Although professional shows are a treat for patrons, community events are a huge part of the centre. Nonprofit groups regularly use the facility to provide audiences with exceptional local entertainment. Enjoy a performance from one of the many youth or adult theatre production companies and dance studios. “Being able to offer this kind of stage for community events is so cool. First time performers, kids, it’s a professional theatre and such an amazing experience for them,” Stelmaschuk remarks.

This spring, patrons can look forward to a full season announcement with anywhere from 20-30 events from September through May; the Rawlinson Centre will announce its 2019-2020 season preview on June 5th, 2019. Moving away from half-year series allows the venue to attract and secure acts more easily. It also creates a better experience for the patron by knowing what events are coming to Prince Albert well in advance. There will also be ticket packages and bundles available with savings for the customer. Build your own season, themed ticket packages and discounts will be offered. According to Stelmaschuk there will be packages and themes for every type of audience such as a series for country fans, family events and cabarets. With the diversity and quality of acts coming through the Rawlinson Centre, there is something for everyone to enjoy. An experience patrons can look forward to is Cabaret shows. “Cabarets are a more intimate experience,” Stelmaschuk explains, “the entire show takes place on stage with the audience and performer in the same space.” Every show has its own unique experience and no two shows are the same, “The audience is what makes the show.” she adds. This makes the patron experience that much more important; Stelmaschuk notes that they’re working hard to continually improve the overall event experience by providing exceptional

Mike Horn’s passion for the outdoors and love of Little Red River Park sparked a vision that has developed into an amazing annual event; the Pine Needle Mountain Bike & Music Festival goes June 9th, 2019 and is celebrating it’s ninth year. The growing festival attracts thousands of people to Little Red for a fun day of food, music, activities and mountain biking. “It started as how can we attract more people out to the park to ride mountain bikes,” Horn recalls. He says the festival is a great way to showcase Little Red River Park, “It’s a reason to come out to the park and enjoy it, what better than food, music and kid’s activities and really keep it family friendly.” Attendees can expect a fun-filled day in an amazing setting, “The event is about getting people out there, having a fun day, enjoying the park,” says Horn. Kids will have a blast in the MNP Wilderness Run, bouncy castles and other activities. Local vendors, including Funky Fresh Bistro will be serving up delicious food and drinks so grab a bite to eat, relax in the park and enjoy music from a great lineup of bands. The music aspect of the festival is an area that has really started to grow according to Horn; over the past several years they have featured performers including The Steadies,

The Wolfe, Bombargo, All Mighty Voice and Jeffrey Straker. BIKE EVENT The 6-Hour Mountain Bike Enduro is the heart and soul of Pine Needle. The event is designed for riders of all skill levels, “We took away some of the challenging aspects of mountain biking and made it a course anyone can ride,” Horn explains. Riders can participate in teams of two or four or as an individual for more of a challenge. According to Horn, riders from other cities continue to support the event and help make it successful, “We had 157 cyclists last year, one of the biggest events in Saskatchewan. We’re trying to grow the teams and grow the support locally. It’s about having fun, enjoying the ride.”

INVESTING IN THE COMMUNITY Not only is the event a way to showcase and attract people to the park but its also a fundraiser. Funds from pledges and the mountain biking portion of the event are donated back to the community. Since its inception in 2011, the festival has raised and donated over $55 000. Funds have gone to various community projects and organizations including the Rotary Trail and KidSport but it became apparent to Horn that investing in the park would benefit all users. “It made sense to start raising money for Little Red, the home of the event and donate money to projects in the park,” he says. Projects have included a retaining wall on the River Trail, the most highly used trail, to maintain its usability, replacing all the firepits in the park and adding a water bottle filling station in the Cosmopolitan Lodge.
Horn has considered lots of ideas and envisioned a long-term plan for the festival, “I like the size now because its manageable but it’s cool to see where it could go.” For now though, he’s happy with where the event is at and says it’s been lots of fun. “We’re raising anywhere between $8 000 to $10 000 a year now, which is pretty good. I want to continue to keep working for the park and advocating for the park.” LITTLE RED RIVER PARK The 1200-acre park, Prince Albert’s largest, invites you to explore and connect with nature. The park features the Cosmopolitan Lodge and a 30 km network of multipurpose trails that wind and cut through an ever-changing boreal landscape. Open year round, park goers have endless opportunities including cycling, hiking, walking, tobogganing, snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing and snowboarding. Visitors can also enjoy picnic and barbeque sites, a playground area and the Swinging Bridge, a suspension bridge that crosses over Spruce River.

In a theatre full of people, Kelly Taylor sat anxiously behind a curtain waiting to take the stage. In Hamilton, Ontario, a long way from his hometown of Prince Albert, Taylor was doing his first show at a theatre. The only comic on the bill, he thought to himself “you’ve made it man, this is it.” Looking back now Taylor laughs, “That was a noon college gig, that was not making it.”

A U.S. college tour soon followed. With an older drinking age in the States, Taylor had to adapt his material, “You were the alternative to drinking. So that year, I started writing a new hour with my big jokes about colouring and jenga.” No stranger to tough crowds, Taylor cringes talking about one of his worst shows. In just 20 minutes, he went through an hour of his best material, “The whole crowd was against me. I was just getting further into this hole,” he says, shaking his head, “I remember thinking ‘Why am I here? Why am I doing this?” The next night, he followed it up with his best college show. Doing over 200 shows a year, comedy has taken Taylor around the world, he hardly imagined it would secure him a permanent gig in his hometown. In 2016, local radio station XFM approached Kelly to co-host their morning show. Used to the unpredictability of the comedy business he had a hard time imagining a full-time job, especially one that required him to be in bed before his kids. After a few meetings, taking the job was a no brainer, “They’re giving me every day off that I need for comedy and telling me if I’m not having fun, quit. How can I say no?” he says. At first, he felt awkward not knowing radio but enjoys not having a script and says the job has been fun. His passion and excitement for comedy is clear, “Comedy has been a holiday for life. It’s the dream job. It feels like you never have to work,” but nothing lights up his face more than talking about his family. “It’s (being a dad) the best! Anything that’s a lot of work, the more you get out of it,” expresses the father of four. Daughter Kade (17) and sons Van (12), Rooke (9) and Tripp (5) complete the Taylor family. Being on the road, away from his family can be tough he explains, “When I have to miss the kid’s stuff, that's when it’s (comedy) work and not fun anymore.” Although their family enjoys travelling and

Kelly Taylor takes vacations alongside Kelly’s shows, he can’t see them living anywhere but Prince Albert. In a city like Toronto or Vancouver he would have more opportunities and more on his bio, but Taylor says that’s not what’s important to him. “My wife loves to travel; she was up for anything, but I like it here,” he says. Taylor grew up in Prince Albert playing hockey, camping and enjoying the outdoors, things he still appreciates today. When he’s not telling jokes, he’s cross country skiing at Little Red River Park, playing shinny on his backyard rink or backwoods camping in Northern Saskatchewan. He also loves golfing, “Cooke (Municipal Golf Course) is unbelievable, it’s one of the best courses.” Another favourite of his in Prince Albert is Little Red, “There was a fire by Little Red this summer. I was like if Little Red burns, we can move,” he laughs adding, “I live at Little Red. I love it out there.”
At this point in his career he feels accepted in the industry, it wasn’t always that way. “I do a joke about it...people ask where I’m from, I say Saskatchewan and they say, ‘so where do you live now?’” He wasn’t taken seriously for years; people thought if he was good, he would leave, but Taylor put on great shows and proved that where you live doesn’t define your success, “It’s not about the recognition or an ego thing, it’s about happiness. Everything I love is here. I love PA.”
Although he still travels often for gigs, Taylor feels like he’s found his niche in Saskatchewan, where hockey functions are right in his wheel house.

Esso Cup Prince Albert will host elite female hockey teams from April 19-25, 2020 for the Female Midget Triple A National Championships.
In September 2018, Hockey Canada announced that the 2020 Esso Cup would be hosted in Prince Albert. The Esso Cup is the championship tournament that culminates the female midget triple-A season to determine Canada’s top team. “It’s an elite event and the first time the national championship will be held in our city,” says Robin Wildey, Co-Chair of the 2020 Esso Cup Committee. Expected to be a competitive team, the host Prince Albert Northern Bears will face off against the top teams representing the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, West and Pacific regions. The Bears hope to be the first host team to win the championship and the first Saskatchewan team to win it all since the Weyburn Gold Wings in 2014. After finishing fourth in the SMFAAAHL this past season, the Bears battled hard against the Notre Dame Hounds in the first round of the 2019 playoffs, falling 3-1 in the best of five series. They look to build on their experience and challenge for the championship in 2020. 2020 EVENT, FAN EXPERIENCE On the heels of a wildly successful 2018 World Junior Softball Championship, the Esso Cup committee is looking to build on that success and deliver a memorable experience for fans. “This city puts on fantastic events. We want to continue that run and showcase Prince Albert,” Wildey emphasizes.

The seven-day event will be played at the Art Hauser Centre from April 19-25, 2020. Spectators will see Canada’s best female Midget teams from each region. Cooke Municipal Golf Course, established in 1909 is a breathtaking piece of Prince Albert's recreation history. The challenging 18-hole course has been ranked in the top five public golf courses in Saskatchewan and Manitoba by SCOREGolf Magazine and Golf Digest. The 6509 yard, par 71 course will keep golfers of all levels on their toes.
The Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse is a fitness enthusiast’s paradise offering several recreation programs and services. Cooke Municipal Golf Course
110 YEARS Located in the heart of Prince Albert, Cooke Municipal Golf Course is steeped with history, celebrating it’s 110th anniversary in 2019. Beautiful and serene, Cooke is a golfer’s paradise. The 18-hole course is both welcoming and challenging with wide fairways and lush greens. Major upgrades were recently made to the course to deliver an even better experience. Renovations include new bunkers, greens and tee decks, a water hazard expansion, family tees and a new irrigation system. The Cooke Municipal Golf Course is complemented by a clubhouse complete with restaurant and fully licensed lounge. The course offers a wide range of services including a 15bay driving range, putting greens, golf club and cart rentals and a fully stocked pro shop. ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS The Prince Albert Raiders offer exciting junior hockey and a chance to watch the future stars of the NHL. Raider alumni including Mike Modano, Scott Hartnell, Leon Draisaitl, Josh Morrissey and local boy Dave Manson have gone on to play in the NHL. The Raiders finished the 2018-19 season atop the Western Hockey League standings. They started the Photo by Lucas Chudleigh season 26-1, the best start in team history and continued their dominance throughout, finishing with a record of 54-10-2-2. A team firing on all cylinders, led
by goaltender Ian Scott and top scorers Brett Leason and Noah Gregor, the team ranked in the CHL top 10 for 24 of 26 weeks. The Raiders also won their first playoff series since 2005. The record-breaking season has brought on Raider fever with hopes to win the Memorial Cup, a feat the Raiders last accomplished in 1985. A LASTING LEGACY One of the biggest events ever hosted in Prince Albert has left a lasting impact. The 2018 WBSC Junior Men’s Softball Championship attracted over 400 athletes, officials and media from 13 countries to Prince Albert from July 7-15. Over 10 000 spectators took in the tournament with a single game featuring Canada versus New Zealand drawing over 5 000 people. Fours years of planning and fundraising made the event possible; over $1.5 million was invested in facility and diamond upgrades at Max Power Ball Parks for the event. Not only did the event showcase Prince Albert to the world but it left a legacy in excess of facility upgrades. Event co-chairs, Felix Casavant and Derek Smith were named 2018 Citizens of the Year for their hard work and dedication. The event was also named a finalist for the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Prestige Awards in the Canadian Sport Event of the Year (budget less than $1 million) category and won the Marquee Event of the Year Award at the Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence. The event generated a positive economic impact for the city and province and put Prince Albert on the map as a great event host and top sports tourism destination.

Grab your gear, bundle up, and head out to Little Red River Park for snowshoeing, tobogganing, skiing or snowboarding, just 5 minutes from Downtown Prince Albert! Hit the slopes at the Kinsmen Ski & Snowboard Centre which features two downhill runs, two rope tow lifts, and a terrain park. If you’re new to the sport or want to avoid too many bumps and bruises, be sure to inquire about lessons at the Old Log Cabin. If you prefer cross country skiing, explore the trails. There are trails for folks of all experience levels. The Prince Albert Ski Club grooms and maintains what are considered to be some of the best urban cross-country ski trails in North America. Don’t have your own equipment? No problem, ski and snowboard rentals are available at the Cosmo Lodge or the Old Log Cabin. Batoche, declared a National Historic Site of Canada in 1923, is a Métis settlement famous for the 1885 Battle of Batoche. Journey through time and re-live the battle led by Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont. Explore the historic site to discover bullet holes, gravestones and stories from the battlefield.
Located 57km south of Prince Albert is Duck Lake. Throughout the town are twelve murals that tell the stories of Duck Lake's history including the 1885 Battle of Duck Lake. ANGLIN LAKE
Located 70 km north of Prince Albert, Anglin Lake is made up of several connected lakes, bays, and islands. The tranquil loon populated waters and forested surroundings provide the ideal place to get away and spend time fishing, hiking, camping, or enjoying the beauty.
BATOCHE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
76 km southwest of Prince Albert, it was a MĂŠtis community on the South Saskatchewan River. Established in 1879, it was the site of armed conflict during the Resistance of 1885.
BIG RIVER
Big River is located about 16 km west of the Prince Albert National Park on the southern end of Cowan Lake. A few of the notable draws to the area, aside from the great recreation opportunities, are the Ness Creek festival site, and the Sturgeon River Ranch.
CANDLE LAKE
Candle Lake is located 80 km northeast of Prince Albert and is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. Nestled within the boreal forest, it is the perfect yearround destination for some peace and tranquility. It boasts a Provincial Park on its banks, playgrounds, interpretive programs, hiking trails, great golfing, boating opportunities, and the townsite of Candle Lake.
CHRISTOPHER LAKE
Christopher Lake, 40 km north of Prince Albert, is part of the Lakeland District. It is situated just 2 km northwest of the village of the same name. Visitors to the area can enjoy the pristine water, access to dining, country store shopping, hiking, camping, swimming, and boating.

FORT CARLTON
Located 60 km southwest of Prince Albert, Fort Carlton was an HBC fur trade post on the North Saskatchewan River from 1795 to 1885.
GREY OWL'S CABIN
Located in Prince Albert National Park, this one room log cabin was built in 1931 and was home to Grey Owl for seven years. You can access the cabin year-round by a 20 km hike to Ajawaan Lake. In the summer paddlers have a 1 km rail portage past the Kingsmere River rapids to Kingsmere Lake.

LA COLLE FALLS
The falls, located on the North Saskatchewan River is the home of a partially complete hydroelectric dam built by the City of Prince Albert between 1909-1913. The site is 45 km northeast of Prince Albert. Access can be difficult in inclement weather.
NARROW HILLS PROVINCIAL PARK
The Narrow Hills Provincial Park offers endless opportunities for adventure, from exploring the trails above the Gem Lakes to camping, fishing, kayaking, picnicking, swimming, and biking. The scenic hills are located 130 km northeast of Prince Albert and provide the perfect wilderness getaway.
NESS CREEK
Located east of Big River enroute to Nesslin Lake, Ness Creek offers cabin rentals, camping, a forest garden and music festivals.

A mysterious grove of crooked and twisting trembling aspen trees. Directions: 14.5 km west of Hafford on Hwy 40 - pass Speers to Flint Rd, 16 km north, then 2.5 km east. Watch for signs at Flint Rd and 16 km mark.
THE GEM LAKES
2.5 km north of Hwy 913 near the west boundary of Narrow Hills Provincial Park, are seven beautiful rainfall fed kettle lakes with a 5.5 km hiking trail meandering throughout. The lakes are stocked with native fish.
