History The Prince Albert area has been a gathering place and center for trade and commerce for thousands of years. When the first European explorers and traders ventured into the region it was documented that the area was called Kistahpinanihk, the Cree name for meeting or gathering place. In 1862, James Isbister an employee of the HBC, settled and farmed here until 1866. It was in that year that the Presbyterian Minister, Reverend James Nisbet arrived and established a Cree Mission. He named the site Prince Albert in honour of the Prince Consort. Early settlers were drawn to this western mission site, its abundance of timber, fresh water, and fertile land. In 1882, with a population of 800, Prince Albert became the capital of the newly formed District of Saskatchewan. That same year the villages of Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, and Regina were established.

Prince Albert is full of history. Visit some of our city's historical sites to immerse yourself in how Prince Albert came to be and what continues to define the city.

Blockhouse in Kinsmen Park was originally constructed in the 1870s. It was used as a stable for local lawyer William Maclise and a blockhouse during the Resistance of 1885. It was relocated to Kinsmen Park from 1st Avenue West and 12th St West in 1932. Canadian Northern Railway Swing Bridge, completed in 1909 (west of

Diefenbaker bridge at river front) was originally a joint railway and road bridge. The traffic lanes were used until 1960 when the Diefenbaker Bridge opened. The unique centre swing span permitted steamboats to pass through and was in use until 1918. Until the railway bridge was built, cable ferries were used to cross the river.

Immigration Hall, located at the corner of 15th Street East and 1st Avenue East, was built in 1929 and provided temporary accommodations for new immigrants during the settlement boom of the early 20th century. La Colle Falls on the North Saskatchewan River is a partially completed remnant of the attempt to attract business to the area by bringing cheap hydro electric power to Prince Albert in 1909-14. The construction project was initiated during the boom of the early 19th century but abandoned during the economic crash of the next decade. Prince Albert Arts Centre

Nisbet Church and School in Kinsmen Park constructed in 1866

by Reverend Nisbet was used as a church and a school near 1st Avenue West and 11th Street.

Prince Albert Arts Centre, a

National Historic Site on Central at 10th Street, was built during the settlement boom in 1893 as a town hall and opera house. Famous Canadian poet and recitalist Pauline Johnson graced the stage on a number of occasions.

Historical Sites River Front Cairn on River Street at Central Avenue was erected by the

Prince Albert Historical Society in 1922 to recognize the Nisbet party’s arrival in 1866.

Saskatchewan Ferries are used seasonally to cross the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers. The Weldon Ferry crosses the South Saskatchewan River linking Hwy 302 and Hwy 682, north of Weldon. The Cecil Ferry crosses the North Saskatchewan River linking Hwy 55 with Hwy 302.

Steamboats were a common sight on the North Saskatchewan River from the 1870s to 1918. The flat bottomed paddlewheelers were used to transport goods and passengers before railways were built between Grand Rapids, Manitoba, and Fort Edmonton. For more information visit the Prince Albert Historical Museum at 10 River Street East.

The York Boat at 2nd Avenue and Marquis Road is a replica of a Hudson’s Bay Company freight carrier that could be poled over shallow water, used with a square sail, and stand up to rough conditions. In the 1880s they were replaced by steamships on the larger rivers and lakes.

Kisiskatchewani Sipi - Swift Flowing River The City of Prince Albert is situated on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in a geographical transition zone that divides the province’s aspen parkland belt from the northern boreal forest. From these banks a human story has played out, one that has been intimately tied to the story of a river. This fast-flowing, shallow, 1287 kilometre, glacier-fed river ebbs and flows east from the Columbian Icefields in the Rocky Mountains through prairie grassland and aspen parkland landscapes then past the City of Prince Albert. Fifty kilometres east at The Forks it joins the south branch where it continues to meander east into Lake Winnipeg. The North Saskatchewan River at Prince Albert is dotted with shifting sandbars and wooded islands. It is fed by two nearby south-flowing rivers, the Sturgeon just west of the city and the Little Red on the east. The river has a natural seasonal rhythm that supports a broad diversity of plant and wildlife along its banks, at the mouths of the converging rivers, and within its waters. For thousands of years this sheltered area on the forest’s edge has attracted people drawn by the abundance of fish, plant and wildlife, source for furs, clay for pottery, chert for toolmaking and boat building, and housing materials. The river’s edge was the seasonal gathering place for many first nation families from the northern forest, southern grassland, and the waterways as a place to trade goods, conduct ceremonies, and negotiate treaties. Beginning in the late 17th century, the first European explorers and

16 | Discover Prince Albert

traders made their way inland, using the North Saskatchewan River to exploit resources and make them available for those living in the east. It was at this time that the Cree name for the river was Anglicized to ‘Saskatchewan’. Over the next two centuries the Hudson’s Bay Company and Northwest Company would build up a network of trade routes and posts along the length of the river taking advantage of the rich resources. The first trading post in the area, Fort Sturgeon, was established by Peter Pond (1776-1780) at the mouth of the Sturgeon River a few kilometres upriver from present day Prince Albert. Throughout this early trading period it was not uncommon to see birch bark and larger York boats working their way up and downstream, navigating the shallow waters, sandbars, and rapids of the river. York boats often had to pole and track past these shifting challenges. In 1862, James Isbister an English Métis interpreter for the HBC started farming on the south bank of the river near present day 17th Avenue (lot 62). Four years later James Nisbet founded a mission three kilometers downstream from Isbister naming the new settlement Prince Albert. ....story continued on page 76

Not only can the community get involved by volunteering, they can also help Project Triple Play reach their fundraising goals. According to Litzenberger they are close to their goal but need a final push which is why they put together a seat sale package with two permanent seat plaques at the new complex and two tournament passes to the event in 2018. For those eagerly wanting tickets, this is your first opportunity to purchase and to give back to the community; only 250 packages remain. You can expect an announcement regarding ticket packages and early bird rates soon.

Litzenberger is happy that planning is going strong and things are starting to fall into place. He says they're honoured to be bringing this event to Prince Albert. An estimated 30 000 people will visit Prince Albert over the duration of the tournament. ADFO anticipates the event will generate a $12 million economic impact for the province, $8 million of that right in Prince Albert. “It definitely will be an event that should be on everyone's calendar for next year and one that shouldn't be missed,” he adds. Event Coordinator Lori Bourne says they anticipate the event will continue to grow this year, "Last year we had well over 10 000 people in downtown Prince Albert and pending fabulous weather, we expect to see over 15 000 people roaming the seven blocks of Central Avenue." 2017 marks the 14th annual Street Fair hosted by the Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District. The festival spans seven blocks and is jam packed with entertainment, activities, and food. Super hereos and Disney Princesses are a big attraction for children. Kids

activities also include pony rides, bouncy castles, and face painting. Street Fair isn't just geared to kids, there are plenty of activities for every age. "The event is about the whole family with activities for everyone to participate in," Bourne notes. There will be vehicle displays, raffle draws, home-based business products ,and sidewalk sales to entice adults. Attendees can also enjoy live entertainment from singers and dancers throughout the day or take a guided historical walking tour. A variety of food vendors will also be on hand to tempt your tastebuds. Street Fair brings people together and showcases our beautiful downtown. The event encourages residents and visitors to spend time downtown and explore the many local shops and restaurants. Don't miss this all-ages family friendly event!
