Well, time to get ready to take the rough with the smooth…. What a summer we had – our hopes bore fruit! Totes dreamy.

This time of year can feel depressing though and we are not helping matters by taking a look at slavery! BUT, on the other hand, we do have a look at the immediately and deservedly historic tapestry created to commemorate the Battle of Lewes – heart warming evidence that all is not yet lost! And to celebrate the season Jayne Shrimpton shows us school uniforms gone by – perhaps also proof progress happens…occasionally!

as they used to say, it makes exciting biting!

Cinder toffee or honeycomb was invented in Beamish, Co Durham in 1913. It was taken up commercially in 1929 by J.S. Fry and Sons and became famous as Crunchie, later a Cadbury bar.

Cinder toffee was a staple part of my childhood and has associations with Bonfire Night. By gum, it’s grim up north!

It is very easy and quick to make but due to the danger of boiling, sticky sugar it is strictly a grown up’s activity. Prepare everything beforehand - once begun, the process moves fast. Use a big saucepan as the mixture expands as it fills with delicious bubbles..

Get a baking tray ready. Cover it with oiled greaseproof paper and set aside. Have a balloon whisk at the ready for quick mixing.

400g sugar 200g golden syrup 100g butter couple teaspoons water couple teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

Put sugar, syrup, butter and water in a pan over medium heat. Stir it and wait until it bubbles and starts to change colour (light amber). Remove from the heat – add the bicarbonate of soda and whisk as it foams. (Be careful and wear an oven glove/ wrap hand in a tea towel if you can). Pour into the waiting baking tray and leave to cool for 30-40 minutes. Break it up when cool. Keep in an airtight container or eat same day for max crispiness.

Go the whole hog and dip the cooled pieces in melted dark chocolate to get that crunchy feeling.

Add nuts to the chocolate for a sense of the exotic.

Alternative ingredients are: 2 tablespoons honey, 60ml golden syrup, 200g granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of water, 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda, 2 x 200g bars milk chocolate. Same method.

This makes 12 bars.

Never too early to start thinking about Christmas Presents!!

Sloe Gin is well named as it is slow but fairly simple. No cooking required, just patience as the sloes steep in the gin Gather ye Sloes when ye may – although it is recommended to wait until after the first frost. (Eeek, frost!)

A modern option is to pick the sloes earlier and freeze them.

Traditionally, you prick each one on the thorns of the bushes - prick as you pick as it were. But OK to prick with a clean needle or fork later at home. Sloes are plentiful. They are the fruit of the Blackthorn, a shrub with savage thorns that is traditionally used as a “cattleproof” hedge - so widespread.

Ingredients

Fill a wide-necked jar half way with pricked sloes.

Add 4ozs/110 g of sugar for each pint (570 ml) of sloes. Then fill the jar with gin, seal, turn several times to mix and store in a cool, dark place. Turn every day for the first two weeks, then each week, until at least three months have passed. The alcohol extracts an almond-like essence from the sloes slowly, giving sloe gin a particular aromatic flavour.

Some recipes use a shorter steeping time and include the expedient of a small amount of almond essence. Another variation is the addition of a few cloves and a small stick of cinnamon.

The gin will develop a deep ruby red colour. Pour the liqueur through muslin or carefully decant and discard the sloes. Fill a sterlised bottle with the deliciousness and store in a dark cupboard. Rather than discard, the leftover fruit can be infused in white wine, made into jam, or used as a basis for chutney. Alternatively, Slider, a West Country tradition, steeps the used sloes from the sloe gin again in still cider, making sloe-flavoured cider.

Sloe whisky & sloe brandy are variants on the gin tradition.

Going back to work? British Slavery Icelandic maternal gene pool is derived from Gaelic people.

An English slave, Balthild, rose to be King Clovis II’s Queen in the 7th century and AngloSaxon opinion started to turn against the sale of English abroad – but the slave trade continued nonetheless, many exported out of Bristol.

In 1086, the Domesday Book records that over 10% of the population were slaves.

William the Conqueror introduced a law in England forbidding their sale abroad and under the influence of the new Norman aristocracy & the church there was a gradual decline, so that by 1200 slavery had ceased everywhere in the British Isles.

5 English slaves escaping the Barbary Coast

Slavery was normal in Britannia from before Roman times, with slaves being routinely exported along with grain, cattle and gold.. During the Roman occupation too slavery was a part of every day life. The system continued under the Anglo Saxons as well, sometimes in league with Norse traders, often selling to the Irish. Even the revered Briton, St Patrick, was captured by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland. Dublin was a major slave trading centre 12

– the ready market leading to an increase in slavery (such as the Viking raid on the capital of Strathclyde to capture all the inhabitants for sale in Dublin.) A large ransom paid for 2,000 Welsh slaves, hints too at the scale of the raids & people robbery in the British Isles. Amazingly, a legacy of the Viking raids and testament to the extent of the slave trade can still be seen today, in the DNA of Icelandic people. There is evidence that approximately 60% of the

The slave trade had existed in North Africa since antiquity, with a supply of African slaves arriving through transSaharan trade routes, towns on the North African coast being noted in Roman times for their slave markets. The markets continued into the medieval age –predating the European transatlantic slave trade by 700 years. It is estimated that 17 million people were traded within

Africa. But, between the 15th to the 19th centuries the ‘Barbary Pirates’ - slave raiders from the north coast of Africa, now Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia & Libya - turned their attention to Europe too for ‘stock’. Coastal dwellers and shipping throughout Europe including Britain endured attacks. The raids (mentioned in Pepy’s Diaries) were so frequent and devastating that many coastal regions were left depopulated. It is estimated that between 1 million to 1.25 million people across Europe were kidnapped for sale in the far from legendary North African ‘white slave market’.

Villages along the South Coast of England petitioned the King for protection. A series of Anglo European wars and adventures finally doused the pirates and their raids in 1813.

Elsewhere in the world, advances in seafaring techniques meant colonies were being founded and new industries, trade and fortunes established. The indigenous peoples of the Americas were routinely enslaved but

they tended to die of the incomers’ diseases. Spanish and Portuguese merchants began buying slaves at the West African markets and transporting them to the ‘new world’. British merchants soon adopted this profitable idea with gusto and, later, with shame – becoming the 2nd largest transporter of slaves to the Americas. The ready market the traders created is thought to have exacerbated the kidnapping and wars in Africa. Between

1650 and 1900, 10.24 million enslaved Africans arrived in the Americas, 1.4 million more died during the 2 ½ month voyage and a further 4 million died in Africa en route after capture & when held at the ports prior to sale.

Almost 40% of all the slaves were taken to Brazil. In 1807 the Atlantic slave trade was outlawed in parliament. From 1808 the Royal Navy patrolled the West African coast for 50 years to thwart the trade continuing to South America.

Meanwhile, transportation of up to 120,000 British people to North America, either as criminals or indentured servants, began in 1718 and continued until 1776 - some then being sold on again as slaves. Following the American Revolution, the destination changed to Australia. Between 1788 and 1868, 168,000 British convicts were sent down under on 806 ships.

TOMATO & MOZZARELLA TART Seasonal Recipe by Valerie Hedgethorne It’s good to have a recipe for tomatoes at this time of year when they are plentiful especially if you grow them yourself and have a glut. This tart is lovely for lunch or as light meal and is suitable for vegetarians.

You will need a large baking tray.

Ingredients: • 450g (1 lb) ready made puff pastry • 1 egg • 450g (1 lb) approximately mozzarella cheese • 4 large plum tomatoes or other large ones as available.

Method: Have the baking tray ready. Heat the oven to Gas 7 /425C. Roll out the pastry to a rectangle 30 x 23cm /12 x 9in. Cut a border 2.5cm /1in wide all round.

Roll out the rectangle to its original size. Place it on the baking tray and brush the edges with egg.

Stick the border on top, like a picture frame. Flake up the edges.

Prick all over the base with a fork and bake for 10 minutes until golden

Slice the mozzarella fairly thinly and lay the slices over the pastry double layer if necessary Slice the tomatoes fairly thinly discarding the end slices. Place overlapping in rows over the mozzarella. Sprinkle with salt & pepper to taste.

Brush the pastry edges with egg and bake for 30 minutes or until the tomatoes have softened and the pastry is golden brown. This is best eaten warm. The basil leaves are partly decoration – as well as a good combination.

Preston Croquet Club The picture shows some of the new members who have joined Preston Croquet Club as a result of the article published in the June edition.

They came along individually to our lovely grounds, close to Preston Manor, for an introductory morning where they met our existing members and played some short games accompanied by our more experienced players.

They obviously enjoyed themselves as they came back for more and they have now joined our club and are being coached in the finer points of the game by our Chairman John Munt (central in the picture with the blue and white shirt) assisted by other experienced members.

The influx of new members has been a welcome boost to our very active club and they have integrated very well making new friends and taking part in some of our social events. After the coaching they can, if they wish, participate in friendly matches with other local clubs to test their new found skills.

Reader’s Letter My reason for writing is to applaud Preston Croquet Club. I booked an afternoon tea party which was to include tuition followed by team games. The Croquet Club team, headed by John, Jo, Ray and co. were absolutely delightful— talented, generous, patient and humorous, full of old world charm and common decency. We had a wonderful time. The laden table looked a picture and the food was delicious. John had even filled jars with his home-grown sweet peas. I urge you, fellow readers, to pop down to this little haven.

Back to School: A Short History of School Uniform

by Jayne Shrimpton As the new academic year beckons, most local schools are encouraging a smart, standardised image for their pupils. Until fairly recently relaxed polo shirts and sweatshirts in a specified colour and bearing the school’s logo graced many Brighton & Hove schools, but the past few years have seen a return to a more traditional uniform comprising tailored trousers or skirt, a shirt, tie, V-necked jersey and blazer.

Adherents consider that a closely-prescribed, formal school uniform reflects well on the institution and benefits its pupils, helping to raise standards of personal appearance, fostering an esprit de corps among students and even improving conduct.

Historical records concerning the evolution of school wear are fragmented and uniforms themselves have varied widely, according to time and place. From an early date charity school pupils received donated garments and, famously, a Tudor-style blue coat, knee breeches and yellow stockings are still worn today at Christ’s Hospital, Horsham - the ‘Bluecoat School’, which opened in London in 1552. designated colour and/or standardised style were relatively uncommon before the nineteenth century. The gradual emergence of a smart, recognisable uniform for Victorian school boys was influenced by various factors: the development of civilian uniforms (especially throughout the public services); sportswear; and in general, the growing sobriety and uniformity of male fashion.

Elite schools paved the way: the iconic Eton suit was introduced at Eton College c.1820 for boys under 5ft 4ins, comprising a short dark ‘bum freezer’ jacket, grey trousers, large starched white collar and top hat. Although later modified (a tailcoat prevails today), the Eton uniform was emulated to varying degrees at other establishments: for example, many Victorian grammar schools introduced or formalised a sober uniform of short jacket and trousers,

white Eton collar, bow tie or knotted tie and a round cap. Similarly, by the 1890s younger board school boys generally wore a standardised outfit consisting of knickerbockers, black woollen stockings, leather boots and a lounge or Norfolk jacket, their shirts featuring starched Eton-style collars. The Norfolk jacket, identifiable by its cloth belt and vertical stitcheddown pleats, originated as a sporting garment and became popular with boys

for both school and weekend wear during the 1880s/1890s, while the distinctive Eton collar also entered everyday dress. For school, this outfit was teamed with a regular male cloth cap or a neat round cap similar to those worn

by Victorian cricketers and other sportsmen.

Like sporting clubs, some schools also introduced their own distinctive colours, so the schoolboy’s cap sometimes bore an identifying stripe.

Children in Victorian village schools were not usually required to wear special garments and most young pupils wore their ordinary clothes to school, being urged to ‘come clean’ if a photographer or somebody important was visiting. Early school uniforms for girls were inspired by the demands of sport and physical exercise. Female pupils did not generally wear a regular school uniform in the Victorian era but functional kit was evolving for girls’ team sports such as cricket and rowing.

Some progressive schools taught drill, early types of gymnastics and callisthenics by the late nineteenth century: clearly, fashionable fitted bodices and long skirts were unsuitable for energetic activities and so stretchy jerseys or loose blouses and knee-length skirts or ‘bloomers’ were worn with coloured waist sashes. An early form of gymslip also developed for the same purpose in the 1880s - a short-sleeved or sleeveless blue serge dress worn over a blouse. A few decades later, this practical sporting garment began to enter 26

everyday school uniform.

Twentieth-century uniforms The existing set of knickerbockers, Norfolk or lounge jacket, white shirt with Eton collar and bow tie or knotted tie remained common for school boys throughout the Edwardian decade and well into the 1910s. Short drawers or ‘shorts’ were already worn for team sports and athletics and after the First World War, as dress in general became more streamlined, old-fashioned knickerbockers gave way to shorts for younger boys, while traditional black stockings and boots were superseded by socks

and shoes. Local elementary school boys rarely wore a formal uniform, a comfortable knitted sweater and shorts being usual by the 1920s.

Knitwear was very popular between the 1920s and 1950s: primary school boys’ sweaters often had an integral knitted collar and even a long tie, in the same or a contrasting colour.

For older male pupils the archetypal uniform of grey flannel shorts, shirt, tie, blazer and cap was becoming widely established and schools developed distinguishing coloured stripes for blazers, sweaters, ties and caps, and their own unique blazer and cap badge.

Older boys progressed to long flannel trousers, most schools setting age or height criteria for the wearing of ‘longs’. The 1920s school boy’s uniform remained little changed until well into the second half of the twentieth century.

Elementary-school girls wore dresses that followed fashionable lines, the loose calflength smock frock of the 1890s and early 1900s, protected beneath a white or coloured pinafore, giving way to shorter shift-style dresses during the 1920s. By the First World War older schoolgirls typically wore a plain tailored calf-length skirt and often a masculinestyle shirt and tie: by this time many middleclass families were sending their daughters 28

to boarding schools and the rise of the confident early twentieth-century schoolgirl was celebrated in popular novels by authors like Angela Brazil. The gymslip, originally worn for gymnastics and sports, developed into a major element of female school uniform by the 1920s, worn with a blouse and tie: in some schools this arrangement continued beyond the mid-twentieth century. Knitted cardigans or sweaters, blazers and felt hats or straw boaters trimmed with bands in the school colours were also worn, both public schools and local grammar schools insisting on formal uniforms that conformed to precise specifications. Strict dress codes redolent of an earlier era lingered on in some such schools until at least the 1970s, as some readers may remember. The more extreme regulations are, thankfully, now consigned to history, yet the wheel of time keeps turning and, ready or not, we are currently experiencing a revival of the traditional school uniform.

Stitches in Time - A Modern Masterpiece Created in Our Midst

Anyone planning a visit to Lewes Castle this year should be sure not to miss the Battle of Lewes Tapestry. This stunning work of art, designed by artist Tom Walker and created by a team of 60 trained embroiderers working almost every day for two years, is a modern masterpiece using 13th century embroidery techniques to create a strong visual impression of local life in the 13th century and how it was shattered by war. Simon de Montfort’s victory in 1264, which led to the summoning of our first ever recorded representative parliament, is depicted in a series of five panels showing how events of the 14th May 1264 unfolded, from the first sightings of soldiers at dawn to the final sealing of the peace treaty. The major events, including the siege of the windmill, the flight over the River Ouse and the burning of the High Street, are all depicted.

So how did the tapestry come about? It all boiled down to the determination and vision of a very small group of Lewes Castle staff and volunteers, including highly talented craftspeople, who met early in 2010 and decided that the hugely important but little-known Battle of Lewes needed to be commemorated in a style worthy of its importance and in a manner which would celebrate and fully involve the local community.

Long discussions were had about types of materials and the stitches to be used. The group was unanimous in choosing acclaimed local artist Tom Walker to do the design – an ideal arrangement as Tom soon became one of the two men who regularly stitched the tapestry! It took him three months to research and sketch out his ideas.

By late July 2011 an embroidery team had been trained and was ready to start work. It’s a sign of the joy the team had in making the tapestry that out of the 60 people on the team the only person who left the project from then until the end was

However the tapestry is not just stunning visually.

It is also remarkable in the way it has been accomplished. It took nearly four years to plan and complete. Just under four miles of thread were used, and it took the team around 5000 hours of actual stitching time to make. That’s the equivalent of one person working every day of the year for two years. The five panels, forming a display 3 metres wide, feature not just soldiers and knights but the ordinary domestic life of the time with its farm animals, houses and wildlife.

There are 175 people depicted in the tapestry and 40 animals. There is just as much detail in a downland mouse as in a violent conflict between knights.

an American who went back home. The tapestry was finally unveiled at Lewes Castle on May 14th 2014, the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes, by expert on 13th century women Dr Louise Wilkinson.

However the tapestry hasn’t just been about the end result. It has transformed the lives of many of the participants. “The tapestry has meant a great deal to me” says embroiderer Helen Roberts. “It has given me back my health, my confidence and above all it has given me the chance to make some really good friends. I have loved every minute of it.” Fellow embroiderer Jan Newbury agrees. “I think we should all be proud to have achieved the twin aims of commemorating the battle in such a creative way and forging supportive friendships along the way.”

Taken together, these countries account for 76% of the total estimate of 29.8 million in modern slavery.

The country with the largest estimated number of people in modern slavery is India, which is estimated to have between 13,300,000 and 14,700,000 people enslaved. The India country study suggests that while this involves the exploitation of some foreign nationals, by far the largest proportion of this problem is the exploitation of Indian citizens within India itself, particularly through debt bondage and bonded labour.

The country with the second highest absolute numbers of enslaved is China, with an estimated 2,800,000 to 3,100,000 in modern slavery. The China country study suggests that this includes the forced labour of men, women and children in many parts of the economy, including domestic servitude and forced begging, the sexual exploitation of women and children, and forced marriage.

The country with the third highest absolute number in modern slavery is Pakistan, with an estimated 2,000,000 to 2,200,000 people in modern slavery.

The Human Trafficking Foundation charity estimates 20,000 people are working in slavery in the UK, and says that number is rising.

Contemporary slavery takes various forms and affects people of all ages, gender and races.

Someone is in slavery if they are: forced to work - through mental or physical threat; owned or controlled by an ‘employer’, usually through mental or physical abuse or the threat of abuse; dehumanised, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as ‘property’; physically constrained or has restrictions placed on his/her freedom of movement.

Our local Association was inaugurated in 1972 to promote and prosper the National Trust (NT), and to arrange social events for the enjoyment of our Members. Our objectives remain the same and our friendly group, until now restricted to NT members, is now open to anyone wishing to support our ideas.

We meet twice a month on a Thursday afternoon at the Ajex Centre, Hove and on a Monday evening at Bhasvic.

We have a variety of speakers during the Autumn, Winter and Spring giving talks, usually illustrated, on a wide range of subjects, including Charles Dickens, the Olympic Games, Brighton in Pictures over the last 100 years and Bee Keeping, to mention just a few. We also have a NT sales table at these meetings, and not forgetting a cup of tea and biscuits.

We have several coach outings during the summer months, visiting NT properties and many other places of interest.

In the Autumn we have a Lunch, a Christmas Tea, and a New Year Lunch.

Each year a five day Holiday is organised, visiting places of great national beauty and NT properties. All these activities raise money and we are proud that over the years we have donated over £100,000 to the NT, priority being given to local properties, namely Nymans Gardens and Saddlescombe Farm.

The Gift of Words

When you think of Pauline Prescott - Hull’s answer to Joan Collins and wife of former Deputy Prime Jag Owner, John - what is the first thing that springs to mind? Chances are it’s not pterodactyls.

Surely magnificently coiffured northern ladies with loyalty cards for the Estee Lauder counter at John Lewis can have nothing in common with those terrifying winged lizards of the late Jurassic Period? However, if I tell you that, in the throes of setting one of my first cryptic crosswords back in December of last year, I chanced upon the realisation that ‘pterodactyls’ is an anagram of ‘Lady Prescott’, perhaps the two previously unconnected images will weld themselves together in the deepest recesses of your psyche.

If so, then you are perhaps the kind of person who, like me, never ceases to enjoy digging for undiscovered archaeological treasures in the substrata of the English language.

When I first embarked upon the mission of becoming an amateur crossword setter, little did I realise just how utterly addictive and richly rewarding the quest for the perfect clue would become. The chance discovery of gems such as pterodactyls/Lady Prescott are occasionally all that you need in the midst of an otherwise tedious Wednesday to find yourself bouncing around with all the alacrity of a baby gazelle on Prozac. Or maybe that’s just me… However, after fifteen years of English teaching (for my sins), and having witnessed the equivalent joy bubble up in children who have, say, just thought up the perfect rhyme for ‘scintillate’, I have come to realise that there is something inherently childlike in all of us when it comes to playing with words.

Perhaps it comes down to the fact that so little depends upon the use of words as playthings.

Anyone can sit down and see what anagrams might unpicked from their own name, for example, and the findings don’t need to be passed to the teacher for marking, grading or the dreaded ‘advice for improvement’...

This sense of freedom that comes from messing around with words for words’ sake is what makes the word puzzle such a powerful tool in the classroom. Even the most reluctant readers and writers amongst the children that I have taught require no cajoling to get stuck into a word game.

Give them a grid, a template, a list or just an idea and they’re away, much like the wartime pupils of setter and schoolmaster, Leonard Dawe, who 36

filled in his blank grids ready for him to produce the clues. (Little did he know that, having listened in to the conversations of locally billeted soldiers, the boys were littering his crosswords with D-Day code words and a rather sticky encounter with MI5 was to become the stuff of cryptic crossword legend.) Trying out the same activity for the first time with my Year 7 pupils one dismal December afternoon last year, I expected them to spend a good, restful hour poring over their grids, repeatedly coming unstuck when confronted with the need to find a 9-letter word beginning with X and ending with Q. Not a bit of it. With online tools like www.crosswordsolver.org, thesaurus.com and www.onelook.com at their fingertips, it was barely twenty minutes before the first pupil presented me with her completed grid, complete with ‘holly’, ‘angel’, ‘baubles’, ‘crackers’, ‘robin’ and ‘snowman’ to tie in with her chosen Christmas theme. Perhaps you’re thinking this girl was some kind of Virginia Woolf or Susie Dent in embryo, but far from it.

This was one of our learning support pupils who has struggled with dyslexia and working memory throughout her education. Her parents had been in just the previous week to discuss her daily struggles with homework and to implore us to help with strategies to get her reading in the evening. Quite unexpectedly, something in this particular activity had clicked with her and when I suggested that she take her fantastic grid back to her desk and come up with clues for her friends to solve, she happily plunged into a writing frenzy the likes of which I’d never seen from her.

To my mind devising word games - whether they be cryptic crosswords, wordsearches, rebus puzzles, whatever… - is like writing poetry.

Something of one’s own intimate relationship with words is sparked in the creative process and it feels somehow like giving a gift, for which a smile provides all the recompense one could desire. Do keep enjoying whatever gifts come your way and, most importantly, don’t be afraid to give the world one or two of your own.

Orienteering

Give it a Go Ever thought of taking part in a sport that welcomes all ages and abilities? Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport that exercises both the mind and the body.

The aim is to navigate in sequence between control points marked on a unique orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.

Roger Maher, from Shoreham, is a member of Southdowns Orienteering club. He is celebrating this year after a fantastic win in the Individual Long Distance British Orienteering Championships in forests north of Newcastle.

In a very competitive 75-79 age group he successfully navigated his way to success adding this title to his gold medal in the British Night Championships held in Pippingford Park last March.

Not only is Roger now a double British Champion but he also won gold medals in the JK International Orienteering competition in South Wales and the Northern Championships, both earlier this year.

from the age of 2 right up to those in the 80+ age class and is a very friendly and welcoming club. We have a very active junior section, and one of our junior squad members has just been selected to complete for England, against Scotland, Ireland and Wales in the Home Internationals.

We hold local events throughout Sussex, but there is also chance to travel and compete against your peers in other parts of the UK and abroad.

Although events are usually in woodland or open hillside with the increase in Summer forest undergrowth these

We have recently held part events in Preston Park, Withdean and Hove Parks.

You may remember taking part in orienteering when you were at School using punchcards. Now we use full electronic chip timing which gives information not only on time taken but how you compare against other competitors.
