…and a new one’s just begun It is such a relief to get to the other side of the solstice, the promise of longer days cheers me up no end. It is often possible to get a sneak preview of spring too by buying a naughty bunch of daffodils! Meanwhile, we can hunker down and enjoy woolly pullies and quiet times together. Normally, I’m in D.S. Mixell’s camp, who said: “Many years ago, I made a New Year’s resolution to never make New Year’s resolutions. Hell, it’s been the only resolution I’ve ever kept!”. But, we can probably all agree there is an interesting year in the offing…. So, I think this year I will make an exception and try to make sure I listen to other people as attentively and positively as I can. We all want the best for each other after all.

Fancy experimenting with popcorn? After all the bustle of Christmas, one of the joys of winter can be quiet, cosy nights watching the telly…. We’re talking popcorn territory. Luckily, Popcorn is a smart snack. It is a whole, unprocessed grain. Full of fibre, packed with polyphenols (same ones found in red wine) and more antioxidants than found in similar weight of fruits and vegetables. It seems to be suggested that we cook the popcorn on the hob (Single layer with hot oil – coconut oil comes recommended but is not vital - in a saucepan with a tight lid. Cook for 3-5 minutes, it is done when popping slows down). If that is too much hassle, there is always microwave popcorn these days, simplicity itself.

Dill Pickle Popcorn Prepare the flavouring first, so ready to go. For the Seasoning: • Tablespoon coriander seed • 1 Tablespoon kosher salt (sea salt also OK) • 1-1/2 teaspoons dried dill (can also add dill seeds for extra taste) • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed (optional) For the popcorn • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels • 2 Tablespoons coconut or peanut oil • 1/2 cup butter, melted Place all ingredients for dill pickle 4

flavouring in a spice grinder and process until smooth. Set aside. Pop the popcorn. When ready, drizzle with melted butter, (you could mix some lemon juice into the butter for an extra zing.) Toss or stir through. Sprinkle with the dill pickle flavouring to taste. Stir/toss again to distribute. Save any unused mix for the next batch! If using microwave popcorn, just open the bag, sprinkle, close and shake. Dill and Parmesan. Variation, even easier: Chop fresh dill leaves or use dried, mix with powder parmesan. Stir through the hot buttered popcorn.

Sweet Idea? Brown sugar & cinnamon glazed popcorn. Serves 6-8 • • • •

50g light brown sugar 10g butter 3 tbsp double cream a sprinkle of ground cinnamon • 25g popcorn kernels Put the sugar in a small saucepan with 2 tbsp water and dissolve over a gentle heat. Bring to the boil, but don’t stir at all. When the sugar is a dark golden caramel colour, whisk in the butter. Remove from the heat and pour in the double cream (stand back as it may spit), stir vigorously, then add the ground cinnamon. Pop the popcorn kernels then remove from the heat and pour over the sugar glaze, tossing the popcorn until evenly coated.

The Anatomy of Energy A new year is upon us, again. So, do you want your life to get better, worse or stay the same, again? However, consider this; if you get-up, look at your phone, use the toilet, drink tea at the same time every day, go to work the same job, with the same people and the same prospects, come home the same way, have dinner at the same time, eat the same food, watch the same TV and go to bed in the same way at the same time as you did last year! Your life may have just become an unconscious habit! So, how on earth do you expect to anything to change? Well, here's some good news to kick start 2019. There is a 'part of your present mind' that truly knows how to change. However, for some there is another 'part of your historical mind' that has a negative emotional charge associated with the past and resents change, potentially sabotaging 'the fabulous future you'. If you want to change things that matter in your life you'll need to change the energy. The Anatomy of Energy is a workshop all about yourself and how you can transform into your very own personal energy manager by becoming energy educated and aware. This workshop isn’t about saving on your gas bill - it's about giving you the scientific tips and tools to fully charge your spiritual battery to make positive changes. 8

01273 299219

I know what you’re thinking. How can a workshop help me travel the world, find health, wealth, happiness, love and abundance? These are all reservations I had but energy awareness has helped me to achieve my goals as I’m sure it would for you too! Incubated by Multiversal Events it seeks to allow anyone to become energy educated and aware. Rooted in science, Pete Donno, a successful Brighton based businessman, writer and actor started Multiversal having spent the best part of a decade researching the science of human energy and vitality and now believes its time to write the book and share what he has found with the world. So maybe this year it's time to find some extra energy and power yourself out of that rut and become 'the fabulous future you' What have you got to lose - time and energy? www.multiversalevents.co.uk

New Archaeology Gallery Brighton Museum & Art Gallery Opens Saturday 26 January 2019 The brand-new Elaine Evans Archaeology Gallery in the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, has been designed to appeal to families and children as well as students and people interested in archaeology and history. The exhibition will mean we will be able to get ‘up close and personal’ with compelling stories of some of the earliest residents of Brighton & Hove from the Ice Age to the Saxons. At the heart of the exhibition will be seven forensically accurate 3D facial reconstructions revealing the faces of people, some of whose remains were found in and around Brighton & Hove. Using modern scientific technology, research into their lives has discovered a wealth of mystery, drama and tragedy through childbirth, malnutrition, toothache and possibly murder.

Listen to the ambient sounds of our prehistoric ancestors at work.

Other highlights include:

See images of reconstructed ancient places in Brighton & Hove like Neolithic Whitehawk and Iron Age Hollingbury Hill Fort.

See woolly mammoth, bison, elephants and hyenas wandering the streets of Brighton with hyper realistic digital animated scenes. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Sussex coastline showing how it has changed over the last 250,000 years. 10

Dieting through the Ages By Jayne Shrimpton January is the month for New Year’s Resolutions and top of many lists will be getting trim and fit after the inevitable extravagances of Christmas. Dieting and preoccupation with body image may have reached extremes in our modern world, yet such concerns are not new, for history reveals a catalogue of attempts at weight management, from alcohol, pills, cigarettes and soap to healthy eating programmes. A mid-15th century banqueting scene demonstrates the rich fare and flowing wine that formed the luxurious diet from which at least one medieval monarch died [Wikimedia Commons]

Poet and politician Lord Byron cultivated a suitably ‘Romantic’ thin, pale image through a series of bizarre diets, including potatoes laced with vinegar [Wikimedia Commons] 12

The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (c.460-c.375 BC), the ‘Father of Medicine’, was an early advocate of a balanced diet and exercise for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, Olympian athletes were urged to follow specific guidelines for the strength and agility needed for victory: initially dried figs, bread and fresh cheese were recommended, but Pythagoras (possibly the philosopher, or a gymnastics teacher of the same name) made red meat a priority; subsequent trainers reiterated the importance of meat, adding “you have to….keep away from desserts; you must

not drink cold water nor can you have a drink of wine whenever you want”. By the Middle Ages, royalty and the nobility enjoyed a luxurious, high-status diet, including copious quantities of wine. William the Conqueror, King of England 1066-1087, retained good health until old age, when he grew dangerously corpulent: adopting a liquid diet comprising mainly alcohol, he lost sufficient weight to get back in the saddle, but died soon afterwards from a riding accident. William’s successor, Henry I, King of England 1068-1135, famously expired

influential Scottish medical practitioner who treated sedentary urban, middle- and upper-class male patients in fashionable London and Bath favoured a spiritual, ethical approach. He advocated a diet based on milk and vegetables, plus regular sleep, exercise and temperance, to keep men relaxed and

This Edwardian advertisement demonstrates how some believed that swallowing tapeworms (or their eggs) that would live in the stomach could help reduce food consumption due to ‘a surfeit of lampreys’: lampreys were eel-like fish that Henry ate to excess even in his twilight years, against medical advice that they were too heavy for his feeble constitution. Richard III was the last English king to die on the battlefield in 1485, aged 32, and studies of his body (discovered in 2012) revealed a diet of game such as swan, crane and heron, freshwater fish like pike and large amounts of wine. Medieval and Renaissance kings and princes enjoyed seemingly unlimited wine, liquid-based diets sometimes being recommended to counter obesity at this time. happy; conversely, erratic eating habits and heavy drinking sessions ‘inflamed the passions’, prompting riotous and dissolute behaviour. Such rational concepts, reflecting Enlightenment philosophy, were overturned somewhat in the early-1800s when emotionconscious Romantic writers, artists and their followers favoured a pale, thin and languid fashionable ideal. To this end, the poet, politician and traveller Lord Byron (17881824) spent much of his tortured youth trialling bizarre diets, including hard biscuits with soda water and potatoes drenched in vinegar. During the Victorian era, a low carbohydrate diet became the most widely accepted method of losing excess weight. The first serious work on dieting is recognised as the booklet entitled Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public published by eminent undertaker, William Banting in 1864, which began: ‘Of all the parasites 16

In the early-1900s, overweight American businessman Horace Fletcher slimmed down and introduced a new phenomenon with his ‘Chewing Diet’, based on the chewing of each mouthful of food at least 32 times, or until it attained liquid form. Fletcher, dubbed ‘The Great Masticator’, believed his method could help with weight loss and avoidance of disease and it made him a fortune. Rumours of another technique in the early-1900s concerned the ‘Tapeworm Diet’ by which, in theory, the dieter swallowed a tapeworm that would live in the stomach as a parasite, consuming a proportion of his/her food. While vintage advertisements survive, there is little evidence of the use of tapeworms, although urban legend has it that the opera singer Maria Callas used this repellent method in the 1950s to achieve substantial weight loss.

An advertisement in Brittania & Eve magazine, c.1929, promotes the healthy ryebased Swedish crisp-bread that claimed to eliminate fat and restore youthful litheness and vigour that affect humanity I do not know of, nor can I imagine, any more distressing than that of Obesity.’ Banting (c.1796-1878), once obese and having tried in vain various spas, diets and exercise plans, now espoused a weight loss programme based on limiting consumption of carbohydrates, especially those high in starch and sugar. Making his dietary changes at the suggestion of London physician Dr William Harvey, Banting successfully replaced excessive intakes of beer, bread, sugar, potatoes, milk and butter with mainly meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and dry wine. The immense and enduring popularity of his pamphlet and diet plan ensured that the verb ‘banting’ (as in ‘Are you banting?’) remained a colloquialism for dieting well into the 20th century. 18

01273 299219

During the 1920s the vogue was for a slender, boyish ‘garcon’ look, but some women struggled to attain this image, using questionable medicines and pills that claimed to banish superfluous flesh or employed constricting corsetry and other underpinnings to flatten their natural curves. It was probably no coincidence that smoking was becoming highly fashionable, with – unbelievable today – many cigarette companies publicising the health benefits of their products. In 1929 one advert proclaimed: ‘Light a Lucky and you’ll never miss sweets that make you fat.’ A cult of health and fitness developed during the 1930s, as the great outdoors beckoned with lashings of fresh air, sunshine and physical exercise. Extreme fads including periods of starvation were fashionable, while the grapefruit diet first made its appearance, an eating programme advocating protein- and fat-rich foods alongside the grapefruits that would miraculously burn fat, producing the perfect streamlined body. Some diets devised years ago are familiar today, yet the weight control activities of even relatively recent celebrities can seem decidedly strange. Reputedly artist Andy Warhol ordered foods that he disliked when

3 URGENT CHECKS ACCIDENTAL LANDLORDS NEED TO MAKE NOW An accidental landlord is someone who has fallen into letting out their property, rather than one who has purchased with this intention in mind. You may have inherited a property, or a change in circumstances may be the impetus, such as relocation or separation. One thing is for sure, there is a steep learning curve for anyone looking to let out their home. We want to ensure you start out on the right foot, therefore make sure you have undertaken the following checks: 1. You need to ensure you have informed your mortgage lender that the use of your property has changed. They may grant you a ‘consent to let’ but more than likely they will move you over to a buy-to-let mortgage.

2. You’re legally required to have certain certificates in place to demonstrate your home is safe for your tenants. These include Gas Safety, Fire Safety, Energy Performance Certificate, and an electrical inspection. 3. If you’re letting the property on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy, have you organised for your tenants’ deposit to be held in a deposit protection scheme. There are three schemes to choose from, and if you fail to hold your tenants’ deposit safely they have the right to take you to court. It is essential that you are up to date on all your legal responsibilities as a landlord and if you would like any advise or help please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Clock Tower Marooned by traffic and grime, it is all too easy to hurry past the Clock Tower and fail to see it properly. It was gifted to the town by a local business man, James Willing, to commemorate Victoria’s Golden Jubilee so is perhaps more properly called the Jubilee Clock Tower. Its placement marked a vital site in the bustling town, at the junction of the thriving North Street with Western Road, West Street and the newly built Queen Road, leading to the all-important Railway Station. It was a generous gift that enabled a lavish and distinctive design. Rising to 75 feet, the tower is constructed of elaborately carved Portland Stone embellished with pink and red highly polished Granite. At the base above the plinth there are four life-size female statues. Above the figures there are portraits on each side evoking the past, present and future of the royal family: The Queen and her late husband Prince Albert with their son Edward, Prince of Wales and wife Princess Alexandra. Above the portraits there are four ornate signposts in the shape of ships' hulls carved ‘To The Sea’, ‘To Hove’, ‘To The Sea’ and ‘To Kemptown’. Above these are the four five-foot clock faces and the whole is topped by a scaled copper cupola.

As can be imagined, such an extravagant and self-confident tower was expensive, only made possible by James Willing’s donation of £2000, equivalent now to £234,000. A Marvel of the Age Above the cupola is a 16-foot mast with a giltcopper sphere at the base. This was a 'Time Ball' designed by our famous local inventor and telegraph expert Magnus Volk. The ball was designed to be raised up the mast hydraulically and at the hour – under the direct control of the Greenwich Observatory no less – it would drop. Despite being a thoroughly modern marvel, the time ball was abandoned within a few years due to complaints about the noise it made. Key Issue? At the laying of the foundation stone ceremony on 20 January 1888, James Willing presented the Mayor with a gold-plated key to the tower. Surprisingly, the key now resides in Australia but at least twice the Mayor’s descendants have brought it back whilst travelling and discovered that it still opens the door at official greeting events.

TA B L E TA L K B R I G H T O N TABLE TALK has been launched. The mission is to make Brighton even more friendly by offering opportunities to talk to new people. The simple idea is that cafes have an assigned table, marked with a TABLE TALK BRIGHTON stand, where people sit if they’re happy to talk to other customers. It’s for everyone, alone, with a friend, child or carer. We want people to TAKE TIME TO TALK. Maybe you’d like to meet and talk to more people Or take a break from your phone or laptop Even a short conversation could make a big difference – you never know who you might meet. TABLE TALK has been supported enthusiastically, not only by cafes but by people of all ages and by The Leader of Brighton Council. Already participating are cafes in different areas of the city, including the seafront and Preston Park. Among them are independents, cafes within stores such as M&S, Debenhams and Waterstones, the national cafe Starbucks, the two main Royal Sussex County Hospital cafes and community cafes. The idea developed when sadly there were accounts of people going for days without speaking to anyone. More recently BBC research has shown that many people, especially 16 - 24 year olds, feel lonely at some time. Brighton is a friendly city but can be lonely for some. We want an assigned table to become the norm in city cafes for eveyone to enjoy. Some cafes will offer TABLE TALK all the time whilst others on a specific day or time. Details are on the website www.tabletalkbrighton. org or Facebook.com/tabletalkbrighton. More cafes are being added, aiming to have one close to each medical surgery in Brighton. Why not give this a try as the new year starts? It could make 2019 a more interesting and

enjoyable year for you. Some of us feel uncomfortable going into a cafe alone but it’s a safe environment. Although we can’t promise that someone will share the table you’ll be welcome there. Do encourage others to join in and TAKE TIME TO TALK. A few people have volunteered to work together to make this exciting project happen. We’d love to hear of your experiences - email tabletalk@onechurchbrighton.org Already available in your area: TILT, Preston Drove. Cafe Domenica, Preston Road. Rotunda Preston Park. Herbal Helpers for the Winter Blues By Lucinda Warner

The dark days of January are upon us and this feels for many people like the bleakest part of the year. The heady festivities of Christmas are over and the lights and holly boughs have been taken down. These ancient symbols speak to us of light and life during even the darkest part of the year when the days are shortest and the nights loom long. By January the days are getting longer, yet with the post-Christmas atmosphere of watching pennies and waistlines, coupled with often grey and chilly days, it can certainly seem a dreary time. The ‘winter blues’ is a term often used to describe anything from the mild sense of malaise experienced by many at this time of year to the more severe forms of S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Symptoms of

S.A.D. include depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, increased sleep and food cravings. It is best treated by a practitioner who can look at the individual’s full history, especially if it is severe. If on the other hand the symptoms are not too debilitating then these remedies can be incorporated into our daily routine to help lift our spirits until the Spring arrives. Low mood during winter is most likely related to decreased light levels so getting out for a walk, especially on a bright winter’s day, is one of the best things you can do. Also ensuring a nourishing diet, drinking plenty of water and getting gentle exercise can make a lot of difference. It is also important to honour the energy of the season and make time for rest and reflection. Using a daylight lamp has proved helpful for many who have to work indoors and therefore see little light at this time of year. There are many herbs which can help, depending on individual symptoms, but here are a few ideas to consider. St John’s Wort is a joyful herb of mid-summer, often called ‘herbal sunshine’. This makes it ideal for banishing low moods during the winter months. St John’s wort should not be taken with a variety of prescription medications however so please see a practitioner if you are taking any. Lemon Balm is another useful remedy that is both uplifting and soothing to the nervous system. It is lovely for calming anxiety and promoting a good night’s sleep and also helps to support the digestion.

Rosemary has a host of important properties making it a great herb to include in teas at this time of year. It boosts circulation, supports the liver, improves digestion and is warming and energizing whilst still helping to balance the nervous system. Try it in tea with lemon balm, which makes a lovely combination. Milky oat seed tincture is a lovely gentle yet effective remedy particularly suited

to those suffering from anxiety and exhaustion. It helps to sooth the nervous system and is very restorative. I can’t recommend getting out into nature enough as this gives us the opportunity to notice all the subtle beauty inherent in this time of year. Bright green mosses, leafy lichens, gnarled roots and bare branches against a winter sky all help us to see the wonder in a time when it is so easy to overlook.

Lucinda Warner is a Brighton based herbalist and plant lover. For more information on the herbs and preparations mentioned see whisperingearth.co.uk

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Brighton & Hove areas and

manager Aaron Smith agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Aaron a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
