But, as the lights begin to twinkle and the familiar songs start, a little magic creeps in doesn’t it?

Luckily I have a family and we reserve Christmas for each other. Like so many these days, without it it is entirely possible that our scattered geography and busy lives would mean we never see each other.

I guess the main thing is to keep it simple.

Christmas dinner is mainly about the crackers & napkins after all! Most of all it is a precious chance to share, laugh and listen. Christmas gives us a massive opportunity to help and be generous in what we do as much as what we give …it is really only the small things that matter.

Dating at Christmas

Why is it that at ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ you sometimes find yourself feeling at your least wonderful?

Christmas is in full swing, smug couples are cosying up by a fire and social media is full to the brim with perfect family snapshots. You can’t even go to the supermarket without feeling inferior as you are confronted by gourmet romantic meals FOR TWO. You’re not even safe in your own home. Nigella is constantly on the box harping on about those special provisions to knock up for ‘when unexpected visitors pop by’… I mean who's going to possibly pop by!?

Receiving a barrage of Yuletide joy with no one to spend it with can feel quite isolating.

So why be alone?

Last year after another failed relationship I found myself living on my own in Brighton and although I have a great network of friends, I wanted to get out there, so I did.

I had heard positive things about online dating ‘apps’ and although I was nervous about taking the plunge I couldn’t help thinking: ‘I’m a relatively normal person - there must be relatively normal people out there with the same interests as me, right?’

I downloaded a dating app called ‘Tinder’ and took online dating on by the horns.

I had some good, some bad and some indifferent dates and all in all came away unscathed and much happier.

I strongly encourage anyone who's is single to do the same!

I couldn't think of a better time to give online dating a whirl than December in Brighton.

With so much to do, you could arrange to meet in a busy pub and share a mulled wine, explore the atmospheric Laines or beautifully lit Pavilion or even pick one of the hundreds of 6

coffee shops we have to choose from to meet for a cosy hot chocolate.

I am now a seasoned fan of Tinder (one of the most popular dating apps out there today).

This particular dating app might not be suitable for everyone for a host of different reasons but there are plenty of dating sites out there for every demographic.

It can seem like a bit of a minefield when first considering to online date. To avoid feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of sites and to find out what one might suit you, I recommend ‘TOP10BEST Dating sites’ which is a dating comparison site which is super easy to use.

‘TOP10BEST Dating sites’ is great as it separates the different dating sites into different ages, sexuality and even religion. It has an option where users can leave an honest review on their experience of a particular site, giving you the potential user a direct insight of how it works, cost and what to expect (a bit like Trip Advisor).

You could sign up, make an account and build yourself an online profile but not upload a photo for a few days while you got to grips with it if that made you feel more comfortable.

If you feel really nervous you could set up a new email account purely for your dating antics - this way if you want to totally remove

yourself from the situation you can shut down both your dating app and email account simultaneously and pretend the whole thing never happened!

and other websites make life much easier these days for you to do your homework and make sure people are who they say they are.

Whatever you choose to do, remind yourself that other people are in the same boat and likely to be equally terrified at the prospect of a first date.

More importantly, don’t rule dating out. Get out there this Christmas. Get online, enjoy yourself, be honest, smile and watch out for mistletoe. x

Try not to set your sights too high by planning to meet your future spouse over a few exchanged emails and one blind date (and yes, ok, you might meet a complete weirdo, but you may not be there cup of tea either!)

Carols at St Peter’s

The annual and very popular Carol Concert at the oldest church in Brighton - St Peter’s (next to Preston Manor) - takes place on Thursday December 15th. St Peter’s is 13th century church with its wonderful interior wall paintings dating back more than 700 years.

The concert features the Sussex Harmony West Gallery Quire, who sing little-known carols and music of rural parish churches from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The quire accompany the jolly

Valerie Hedgethorne taught cookery & cake decorating for many years in Brighton before becoming a Home Economist and writing for the national magazine CAKE for 20 years.

Valerie is a past president of the British Sugarcraft Guild & is a member of the local Guild Branch, which meets monthly in Rottingdean for demonstrations of all types of cake decorating.

This is named after a friend of mine who ate it at my home last Christmas and then asked for the recipe.

It’s one of my favorite recipes for a buffet or to serve with cold meats. It is very piquant and tasty.

You will need a dish of any shape with approximately 1 litre capacity.

Hard boil the eggs. Peel the tomatoes by firstly cutting a small cross in their stalk ends. Put them in a bowl and cover with boiling water.

Soak the anchovies in a little milk. Slice the eggs and arrange them in the base of the dish. Add sliced artichoke hearts. Scatter over the capers and gherkins. Place the tomatoes, cut side down, on top.

Leave 2 minutes then transfer them to cold water.

The skins will easily slip off.

Dry on kitchen paper. Cut in half through the stalk ends.

Dressing: mix together the vinegar, mustard, salad oil, tomato ketchup and herbs. Taste for salt, pepper and pinch of sugar.

Heat the 2 tbsp oil in a frying pan and fry the tomatoes quickly on each side. Remove from the pan and leave to cool.

Pour evenly over the tomatoes.

If using artichokes, drain and trim off the hard

Chill before serving.

Drain the anchovies, cut in half lengthwise if they are wide. Arrange in a lattice over the top.

How about a bit of both, as life is, after all, about balance and celebrating Christmas is only one day, 3 meals at most. But then there’s all the parties and seeing friends etc. So when coping with Xmas there are 4 main contributing factors to consider, and if we become a little conscious with our actions we may well get through it a little healthier.

1. Portion control: A closed fist is the

total size of carbs needed per meal. An open hand is the size of protein you need.

Plus two closed hands of greens. Any more will end up on your hips. So try to keep away from seconds!

2. Alcohol: 1 large glass of wine or pint

of beer per night, added up over a week equals nearly a whole day’s worth of calories. So imagine what a few good nights out adds up to!

3. Drinking enough water will help as

it will keep you hydrated and help provide energy. 2 - 3 litres a day is your goal.

4. Sleep is gonna save you but you need a

good uninterrupted nights sleep. If you’re dehydrated from alcohol you won’t sleep as well so make sure you’re hydrating yourself before, during and after the parties.

Christmas shopping traditions

By Jayne Shrimpton The rampant consumerism at this time of year can seem excessive, almost overwhelming, and yet the avalanche of marketing and merchandise is not entirely new, as Christmas shopping has been big business for generations. Well over a century ago, advertisements for seasonal goods loomed

large on billboards, sandwich boards and posters, filled handbills and periodicals, while many shops began stocking their festive fare in September or October.

Commercial announcements in the press date back centuries, with pictorial advertisements becoming

more common in the late-1800s, providing Victorian readers with a visual impression of articles previously described in words.

By the early twentieth century daily newspapers, specialinterest magazines and other printed publications regularly featured Christmas notices that combined eye-catching images, bold brand names and earnest captions to draw attention to products ranging from mops to Meccano.

Publicity reached new heights in the 1950s with cheerful modernist advertisements enhanced by catchy slogans that reflected the influence of American culture and rising consumerism. Surviving images from Christmases

packaged in picturesque painted tins and decorated boxes, some of the more exotic provisions only available at Christmas and New Year, such as sticky dates, figs, Turkish delight, sugared almonds and marzipan fruits. Oranges and other fresh fruit would be wrapped in coloured paper and attractively displayed, while chestnuts for roasting and Christmas ‘small nuts’ - as brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds etc. were sometimes called - overflowed from sacks. Cinnamon sticks were displayed in jars on the counter and the air hung heavy with the scent of cloves, nutmeg and mixed spice.

Prior to stringent health and safety regulations, local shop interiors and windows were stacked high with enticing goods – not only seasonal foodstuffs, but also Christmas cards and crackers, luxury indoor fireworks and modest gifts such as pocket handkerchief sets, boxed

past reveal that the goods promoted 50-100 years ago were in many respects similar to those we favour today: alcohol; fine foods and confectionery; mechanical and electrical gadgets like cameras and high-end toys; nightwear and lingerie; fashionable winter wear; perfumery and cosmetics.

Long before the internet or even TV, local general shops or grocers throughout the country would, by autumn, have ordered in supplies of dried fruit, nuts, candied peel, brandy and other ingredients for the Christmas cake, pudding and home-made mincemeat that were traditionally cooked at home. Vinegar was sold by the pint from barrels, for the pickling of onions, red cabbage and beetroot, in preparation for the Boxing Day buffet. Later, in December, appeared crackers, biscuits, cakes, chocolates and sweets,

The right-hand window brims with Christmas cards, crackers and gift ideas including pyjamas and blankets

soaps, small dolls and lead soldiers.

Many shops also stocked the kinds of traditional Christmas tree decorations that pre-dated modern fairy lights - coloured glass baubles, candles and sugar mice. There might be other festive ornaments too, such as paper lanterns and ornate bells and balls to hang indoors, and reams of fancy wrapping paper, brown parcel paper and string. Posters around the shop advertised the special offers available and assorted seasonal goods – everything for the provincial customer at Christmas.

Santa Claus was the highlight of many department stores’ Christmas grottoes and queuing up to see him and receive a present remains a nostalgic childhood memory for many. Visiting Father Christmas and his sidekick, Uncle Holly, in Selfridges’ Grotto was our tradition as small children in the 1960s, when we travelled from our village to London (initially by steam train), wearing our ‘Sunday best’ for the occasion. When it was our turn to meet Santa, we bashfully accepted a brightlywrapped present from the white-bearded gentleman and a round badge portraying Uncle Holly in his green Dickensian costume, for we were proud members of the Uncle Holly Circle.

launch a ‘Christmas Fairyland’ complete with themed displays, shows and grottoes in 1878, soon after the store opened. Another early ‘Christmas Grotto’ appeared in J P Robert’s store in Stratford, East London, in 1888, and subsequently shopping arenas geared towards children, often called ‘Christmas Bazaars’, were installed in retail emporia up and down the country during the 1890s and early 1900s. Each tried to outdo its competitors by staging ever more elaborate events: for instance, one year Bentalls of Kingston hosted an in-store circus, including live animals. Selfridges (established in 1909), known for its artistic window displays, always created magical Christmas window settings, and still does today.

Author Alexandra Brown, born in Brighton, based Carrington’s, the fictional department store of her books, on Hanningtons, describing on her blog the entry into Lapland and route ‘along a corridor swathed in snow and twinkly lights’, to Father Christmas, who took her hand-written Christmas list, before giving her a present. She recalls: ‘Visiting Hanningtons was a treat, an occasion, and the place to purchase a special gift, especially at Christmas time, with Santa’s grotto being the ultimate festive experience.

Upsettingly, the ‘fact’ that three wise men travelled to visit baby Jesus by camel is uncertain these days. Whenever the magi are depicted they are aboard Dromedaries – the most common (90%) type. Dromedaries have one hump, said to resemble a ‘D’ and Bactrian, two humps, looking like ‘B’ Surprisingly, the earliest camels lived 40-50mya in South Dakota.

They were about the size of a rabbit. By 3-5mya, now the size of a goat, they split. Some spreading via the Isthmus of Panama to South America and developing into today’s Llamas and Guanacos and others heading off over the Bering Land Bridge towards Asia. Camels were wiped out in North America about 10,000 years ago by the arrival of Native Americans, (as were mastodons, sabre-toothed cats etc).

As well as sturdy and patient ways of moving people and cargo, camels also provide milk so rich in minerals and proteins that nomads can live on it alone for up to a month. Camel meat has also been eaten for millennia from ancient Greece to camel lasagne in Alice Springs today. Their urine has been prized as a medicine for centuries even being used as a shampoo…. Camels are so important in Arabian culture that there are over 150 words for ‘camel’.

Because of their strength and endurance camels were introduced to Australia in the mid-19th century to cross the vast deserts. However, once roads were built the camels were abandoned… Not a good move with 1.3 million empty square miles in Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territories.

Camels breed readily and it was estimated that by 2013 there were a million feral camels in the outback. They caused a serious problem in the dry terrain – capable of drinking 30 gallons of water in 13 minutes – emptying precious aboriginal watering holes etc. With the population expected to double every 8-10 years, a major cull was undertaken reducing the current estimate of roaming animals to 300,000.

AMNESTY WRITE FOR RIGHTS AT ST JOHN’S On 11 December St John’s will be hosting a letter and card-writing session over tea and cake as part of Amnesty International UK’s campaign to provide support to those around the world who are currently wrongly imprisoned and to appeal to the authorities to free them.

Among those we wrote in support of last year was Albert Woodfox. He was eventually freed in February after serving 43 years and 10 months of almost continuous captivity after the state of Louisiana dropped the threat of a third murder trial against him. (Two previous ones for the same crime had been thrown out by the courts on grounds of racial discrimination and ineffective legal representation).

Amnesty is currently supporting two political prisoners in the Democratic Republic of Congo; a father in Brazil who is seeking justice after two of his sons were shot and killed in separate incidents and a third shot and wounded; and Nazanin Zahgari Ratcliffe a British-Iranian project worker who was arrested on a family visit to Iran and who has been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to 5 years’ imprisonment for reasons that have not been disclosed.

Cloves are actually the flower buds of a 12m tall evergreen tree native to Indonesia, although it is now grown commercially in Bangladesh, India, Madagascar, Zanzibar, Pakistan Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Use of cloves has been found back as far as 1721BC, traces found in ancient Syrian ceramics. It is recorded that a leader of the Han Dynasty (3rd Century BC) required people who spoke to him to first use cloves to freshen their breath.

Changing Our Expectations to Enjoy the Festive Season

By Dr Sima Patel “Christmas is not a date. It is a state of mind.” – Mary Ellen Chase The holidays can be a time of joy, cheer, and gratitude; they can also be really challenging and stressful.

On the one hand there is the increasing pressure on buying gifts and expensive ones at that. There is also a heightened emphasis on being part of a perfect relationship or perfect family. On the other hand there are a vast number of people struggling to make ends meet on a daily and weekly basis let alone having the funds to buy additional gifts and food. There are also people that feel acutely alone at this time of the year and who experience an overwhelming yearning for comfort, security and safety with loved family and friends but who do not necessarily have key people in their lives to gain this comfort. So it is clear that some people will thrive during the festive season and some people will feel acute sadness and grief and many will fluctuate between the two extremes at any moment in time.

Expectations at all levels increase and yet human beings have to somehow protect themselves against disappointment at this time of the year. So how can we modify our expectations from high to moderate and even low in order to enjoy the festive season as much as is possible for each individual that we are? The following strategies may be helpful to you: • Instead of buying gifts, could you give the gift of ‘doing something kind for someone’ over the coming months or year. This could be a household chore or agreeing to visit someone each week or month to keep them company or fix something for someone or 32

teach them a helpful skill or agree to lend someone something for a period of time.

Research shows that doing something kind for someone benefits both the giver and the recipient.

• Accept the situation and try to find other ways of enjoying the festive season: Rather than spending all of your energy on feeling alone or sad, try to think of who is around you that you can enjoy the festive season with, agree to spend time with them and cherish and enjoy their company. Many sports events now take place on Christmas day so even if you do not want to enter the sport, just watching can enable you to have a sense of feeling light and at least having a laugh or two. More social venues are now also open during the festive season so there are always people to be around.

• If the meal is not perfect, try to laugh it off rather than feel bad or guilty.

• Try to lighten up your mood by watching a funny film, recalling funny moments in your life, listening to or watching your favourite comedian, spending time with people who make you laugh, telling jokes and encourage others to do so as well.

• Reflect on some good moments that you have had during the year. The following questions may help you to warm your heart and feel a sense of contentment: • Who has meant the most to me during the good and bad times?

• What have I done to help others this year?

• Where do I find my strength?

• Who are the key people in my life that I want to be thankful for this year?

Help give a homeless young person a chance for a better future. estranged from their family. Family breakdown is the biggest single cause of homelessness amongst young people and this can be particularly difficult for young people to deal with in the run up to Christmas.

It’s chilly outside, temperatures are dropping, daylight hours are short and for many of us thoughts now turn towards preparing for Christmas festivities, involving family, friends or loved ones.

However, for many people in our City this time of year is particularly desperate and bleak. If you live or work in Brighton and Hove, it will come as no surprise that the number of people sleeping on our streets is increasing. Homelessness in Brighton and Hove has more than doubled since 2011 and the City now has the third largest homeless population in the UK. The stark reality is that those sleeping rough in our community this winter are 13 times more likely to be a victim of violence than the general public.

Homelessness is a particular issue with young people who are at risk of exploitation and often have very poor support networks and may be

The Clock Tower Sanctuary is a local charity which supports homeless 16 – 25 year olds throughout the year but sees a spike in demand during the winter months. It is Brighton’s only drop-in service providing a welcoming and safe space for young people and it does all it can to help prevent young people from a life on the streets. They do this by providing access to a hot meal, clothing, showers, a postal service, advice and support. Here young people can get the support they so desperately need for a chance to have a brighter, happier future.

Often local residents see people on the streets but are unsure of how they can help address this growing problem. The Clock Tower Sanctuary is asking for your help this Christmas by donating to its Urgent Winter Appeal, which aims to raise £15,000 to help support homeless young people over the winter.

Don’t Forget Burning the Clocks, 21st December!

Brighton’s wonderful celebration marking the winter solstice organised by Same Sky is set for 21st December. It is a spectacular free event with 1,500 lantern-carrying participants. The parade winds its way through North Street, Ship Street, East Street to the seafront and Madeira Drive for the fire finale at about 7.15pm. Watch the finale from the Upper Terrace on Marine Parade or from Madeira Drive. Note There will be loud music and fireworks as well as a bonfire and fire show.

(You can take part in the parade too by buying a lantern kit with the official wrist band, Kits are available from Wood Recycling Project London Road, HiSbe Food York Place, Book Nook First Ave Hove or the Royal Pavilion Shop.

It is important only the Same Sky lanterns are used for safety reasons…)

NEW MEMORIAL AT WITHDEAN PUPPY PARK

Mango’s Gate Withdean Park Dog Walking Community (‘Withdog’) aim to socialise dogs and humans of all ages at the north Brighton ‘puppy park’.

Their latest activity is rather a sad one though, with an important message at this time of year.

They have just installed a new memorial gate to Mango, a 10-month female Podengo rescued from The Algarve. Mango was run over and killed near Dyke Road Park in August after being startled by loud fireworks let off unexpectedly near a local dog-walking area.

The gate was paid for by public donations kindly raised by Helping Paws, a local organisation that brings stray dogs like Mango from Portugal to find new homes in the UK. With New Year’s Eve coming up Marc Abraham, locally-based TV vet, says: “Fireworks are a major problem for pets all year round.

Unpredictable flashes and bangs often make pets anxious and occasionally, as in the tragic case of Mango, panic and flee. If you suspect fireworks will go off in your area please keep

all pets indoors, provide a safe ‘den’, turn your TV or radio up, pull the curtains, and provide plenty of distractions with toys and treats. More severe cases may even require medication from your vet.”

1ACross – A Good Place to Start Our Christmas crossword puzzle is the collective work of 25 members of the 1ACross group on Facebook – a troll-free, ad-free haven for those who enjoy setting and solving cryptic clues and puzzles.

minded people, bound together by their common passion. Many of these people are yet to meet in real life, but all those occasions where some of these online acquaintances have met, have been joyfully documented.

Founded two years ago by veteran setter, Sowmya Ramkumar it’s an ideal, friendly group to learn and improve one’s skills. Sowmya is a financial consultant and has set over one hundred cryptic crosswords themed on brand names for an Indian business publication.

Conversations that began online had seamlessly continued in real life meetings and people have experienced the feeling of catching up with long-lost friends, with whom they seem to have an instant connect and an inexplicable resonance of thoughts.

One indication of the global appeal of crosswords, in general and this group, in particular is that the admin team is geographically diverse, with Sowmya from India, living in the Middle East, Lakshmi Vaidyanathan and Ramki Krishnan based in India, Brian Dungate in the UK and Heidi Schroeder and Martin DeMello living in the US. While the majority of the members are from India or the Indian diaspora, many skilled setters from all over the world are members, with the emphasis being on producing good British-style clues. Incidentally, every crossword puzzle in this magazine has been set by a 1ACross member for several years.

Every now and then, one comes across the supposed “crossword obituary” - lamenting that this fine intellectual pursuit, is at the brink of extinction.

What could be described as an elitist solitary pursuit has metamorphosed into an amazing social activity at 1ACross. Every day, new themed games based on cryptic crosswords are played in the group and there is an atmosphere of camaraderie and bonding that goes beyond geographic, political, theistic or other beliefs. There is mutual respect for different styles of setting and a willingness to learn from each other while having fun.
