Votes for Women Opens 17 November, at Brighton Museum Brighton was early to join the struggle, as early as 1850 Anne Knight wrote to the then Brighton Herald demanding chartists campaign for universal suffrage. The first petition on the issue was presented in 1868 by Brighton MP Henry Fawcett – husband to Millicent Fawcett and companion in her fight.
Minnie Turner 1867-1948, Holloway Brooch holder This exhibition celebrates Brighton & Hove’s considerable suffrage heritage and features objects belonging to Brighton-based suffragette Minnie Turner.
One of the first Women’s Social & Political Union branches was founded in Brighton in 1906 and had more than 150 members within its first year. January 1910 saw police extricate two women from the inside of the organ at the Brighton Dome – where they had been hiding, intending to leap out during the talk scheduled for later that evening by anti-suffrage Prime Minister Asquith. (Unfortunately, the appalling
dust within the organ made them sneeze and led to their discovery!) Minnie Turner joined the WSPU in 1908. She leased and then bought ‘Sea View’ 13 & 14 Victoria Road which she used as a boarding house. Her adverts in the radical women’s press read: “Suffragettes spend your holidays in Brighton, central. Terms moderate.” Women who stayed include Emmeline Pankhurst, Constance Lytton, Annie Kenney, Flora Drummond, Marie Naylor and more. Demand was so high, extra accommodation was supplied by erecting a wooden hut in the garden and the use of a potting shed. Sea View provided recuperative care for women who had endured hunger strikes, such as Minnie Baldock in 1911 and
The Holloway brooch was designed by Sylvia Pankhurst and was awarded to members of the WSPU who had been imprisoned. The design features the House of Common’s Portcullis and the superimposed arrow is in the suffragette colours. 6

Emily Wilding Davison in 1912. Sea View and its purpose was not universally popular and in 1912 the house was attacked by local residents; the same year that Minnie had goods seized in lieu of tax she had withheld: No Vote No Tax. Minnie Turner was arrested three times for taking part in actions, in 1911 she was sentenced to 21 days in Holloway for breaking a window at the Home Office. After a life dedicated to social justice her funeral in 1948 at Downs Crematorium was hugely attended by representatives of the Suffragette Fellowship, Women’s International League and more. *City residents have free entry to the museum although it is important to take proof such as council tax bill/library card.

LIGHT GINGERBREAD WITH BUTTER ICING Seasonal Recipe by Valerie Hedgethorne
Valerie Hedgethorne taught cookery & cake decorating for many years in Brighton before becoming a Home Economist and writing for the national magazine CAKE for 20 years. Valerie is a past president of the British Sugarcraft Guild & is a member of the local Guild Branch, which meets monthly in Rottingdean for demonstrations of all types of cake decorating. In the North of England Parkin is the traditional cake for Bonfire Night, but I prefer a lighter gingerbread and I like to include stem ginger for extra flavour. This recipe has a buttercream topping with pieces of stem ginger to make it more delicious. You will need a tin 28 x 18cm (11 x 7 ins).

LIGHT GINGERBREAD WITH BUTTER ICING CONTINUED INGREDIENTS: • 200g (7oz) margarine • 200g (7oz) caster sugar • 250g (9oz) self raising flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 2 level teaspoons ground ginger • 1 level teaspoon mixed spice • 1 tablesp black treacle • 1 level tablesp ground almonds • 3 large eggs • 2 tablesp milk • 5 pieces stem ginger in syrup Icing • 75g (3oz) butter • 175g (6oz) icing sugar • 2 pieces stem ginger
METHOD: Line the tin with silicone paper and grease it. Heat the oven to Gas 3/170C. Cream together the margarine and sugar. Beat the eggs and gradually beat them into the creamed mixture a little at a time, adding a tablespoon of the flour towards the end. Sieve together the remaining flour with the baking powder, ground ginger and mixed spice and fold it in. Mix the black treacle with the milk then stir it in with the ground almonds. Cut the stem ginger into small pieces and fold them in. Spread the mixture into the tin and bake for 45 mins approx until the cake is firm to the touch. Leave to cool. Icing Cream together the butter and icing sugar then spread it over the top of the cake. Mark lines with a fork. Cut the stem ginger into small pieces and put them in lines of three across the width and four lengthways. Cut the cake into twelve squares, each section with a piece of ginger. Note: if you would like a more intense ginger flavour add extra ground ginger and another tablespoon of black treacle.

Best China – Layer your best china with paper plates to keep them scratch and chip free. Juicier Chicken – Stuff a whole apple inside before roasting as usual. Discard the apple before serving.
Sharpening Scissors – Sharpen blunt scissors by putting round a bottleneck and drawing back and forth as though cutting it.

Commemoration History Notes by M Bance
As we all know the Armistice of Compiègne came into force at 11 a.m. Paris time on Monday 11th November 1918 (“the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”) and brought the fighting to an end. At 5 a.m. that morning Germany, exhausted, bereft of manpower and supplies and with hungry citizens at home, had signed a ceasefire agreement with the Allies. Tragically though, in those intervening six hours, with peace within touching distance, more lives were lost. The last British soldier to be killed in action was Private George Edwin Ellison. He died at 9.30 a.m. while on patrol on the outskirts of Mons in Belgium - just a couple of

Peace Treaty: The Great War, The Kaiser’s War, The First World War was finally over. It had lasted nearly four and a quarter devastatingly long years and forever changed the world, not just Europe. It had been fought by two coalitions, the Central Powers consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungry, Turkey and Bulgaria; and the Allies whose key nations were France, Russia, Belgium, Britain and the USA. Although, at some stages during the conflict, no fewer than 24 countries
were technically at war with Germany and her allies. And it is because we generally think of this conflict as being located in France and Belgium – images of the bloody, muddy Western Front – that there is an element of surprise in the knowledge that countries like Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras were also involved. Sussex had, of course, played its part. The county’s proximity to war ‘over there’ meant involvement was WWI Flying Ace, Edward Corringham “Mick” Mannock, VC (1887–1918). During his career as a pilot, Mannock accounted for a least 61 downed aircraft.

inescapable. Locations around the south coast were identified as possible invasion spots and the Royal Sussex Regiment had assembled troops in Newhaven and Hastings to defend the ports. Thousands of men from the UK and Commonwealth had passed through training camps in Seaford before heading off to the Front. And vast numbers of these same men received care in the network of military hospitals set up to take advantage of the “recuperative powers” of the Sussex air. Everyone had resiliently endured, one general officer at GHQ in France feared that his wife, living in Sussex, suffered more from food privation than he did!

Away from the Home Front, Battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment had been involved in the fighting from the start; they arrived in France in August 1914 and took part in almost every major offensive. The Regiment lost in excess of 6,800 men and the names of the battles in which they fought - Mons, Ypres, Loos, Somme, Passchendaele and Arras - have become etched in our individual and collective memories. This deep connection is perhaps explained by the fact that every Sussex family must have known someone who had been involved and their stories have come down through the century to us. Stories like that of Edward Corringham “Mick” Mannock, born on the 24th May 1887 at Preston Barracks in Brighton (although, in truth, there is some question over his birth place). Mannock was one of the greatest fighter aces of the First World War, awarded more medals for courage
than any other British fighter pilot - the Military Cross twice, the Distinguished Service Order three times, and posthumously the Victoria Cross. His last flight was on the 26th July 1918. After attacking a German plane he followed it down and was hit by ground fire. His left wing detached and he spiralled out of control. His body was never found. Or the equally remarkable Captain Theodore Wright, who was born at 119 Lansdowne Crescent in Hove. As a member of the Royal Engineers, he was part of the British Expeditionary Force that arrived in Mons on the 22nd August 1914. The very next day he was sent to supervise the destruction of eight bridges over a canal. Whilst connecting leads under Jemappes Bridge he was hit. Despite serious shrapnel wounds, he continued to set the charges and successfully destroyed the bridge. For this act of gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Take for instance the commemorative plaque under the beautiful WWI stained glass window at Brighton Unitarian Church, it includes five members of the congregation killed in action – men who may have shared the same beliefs, but were from very different backgrounds and walks of life. One was Arnold Forrester Dallaway whose family lived in Rose Hill Terrace, Brighton. Before the war, Arnold had been an engine cleaner working for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. He joined the army as a Gunner and was killed in action at The Somme on the 27th June 1916. He was just 22 years old. We cannot begin to imagine what men like Arnold, Theodore and Mick went through or, using today’s sensibilities, judge what they did or how they did it. We can, just about, regard the 1914-1918 war as history, but it is, without doubt, an episode in our past that many still feel emotionally connected to. And this is important, because it means the thousands who lost their lives – whatever they were doing, wherever they came from are not forgotten.
After the war, St George’s Chapel, in Chichester Cathedral, was restored and furnished as a memorial to the dead of the Royal Sussex Regiment. Names are recorded on panels attached to the chapel walls.

Over the hotels, restaurants and tower blocks, flocks of starlings fly, wings beating the air. Groups splinter off and reform, growing larger as more birds join. On the western horizon the sun dips into a settling sea, smudging the sky rose. It’s a little chilly, but not that cold for November. Before me in the water, stoic and dark, stands the ruined ribcage of the West Pier, a skeletal remnant of its former self. The West Pier has been a regular winter roosting site for starlings since the late 1980s. I remember its faded grandeur, its lacey wrought ironwork and, later, it’s slow decay as it crumpled bit by bit into the sea. When fire destroyed it in 2003 it was beyond repair. But for undisturbed shelter, the starlings loved it and they still do, although it offers little in the way of shelter these days. A large flock now gathers and begins to murmur. As the birds wheel over I sense an urgency in their rhythm; the birds are orchestral players tuning up, keeping in time, rehearsing for some crescendo. Above the waves the murmuration unravels, becoming an organism, a giant swirling amoeba throwing out its protoplasmic arms. A figure of eight forms and the elastic starling fabric pulls and twists as a rush of birds spirals and scatters only to reunite and reform this dark beast of the sky. Then it hangs like the ghost of a memory, flickering over the ruined structure and pulsing to the rhythm of the waves breaking on shore. Each starling flies an exact distance from its neighbours, say the experts. I am mesmerised. As I watch I see 22

rosettes and spirals, I see circles, hearts, arrows, flowers. Yes, I see the patterns of flowers as the murmuration dances, now a little closer to the old pier. I turn around and see behind me a crowd gathering on the tiers of shingle. Everyone is watching. Many with mobile phones are taking photos, others are filming. It is wonderful that a natural phenomenon can draw so many people away from all the man-made tourist attractions here. Suddenly as the light dims, the murmuration ceases to murmur, the starlings have alighted on the pier and the spectacle is over. The sun has long gone. Banks of mauve cloud like pods of sky whales collect above the slow swinging sea. Simple Tips for Self Care By Lucinda Warner
The nights are drawing in, the mornings are chill and despite the sunny days there is no escaping the fact that we are descending into winter. The time between Halloween and the Winter Solstice is the darkest part of the year and one of its lessons is to turn inward a little, quieten our pace of life and see the areas where we might need some tending. In short, to practice a little more self care. Self care has become something of a buzzword in recent years, both because of its potential to sell us things (spa days, shampoo, chocolate) and because it expresses a very real need for people to pay more attention to what their bodies are telling them, something that is so easy to ignore in today’s fast paced world. Self care does not need to mean expensive products, it really means slowing down, turning our focus inward and treating ourselves with a little more kindness. Perhaps one of the most important ways we can
include it in our daily life is to simply be a little gentler with ourselves, forgive our inner critic and accept our own and others imperfections with an open heart. One of my favourite sayings comes from the 7Th Century Zen master Seng Tsan, who wrote that true freedom is being ‘without anxiety about imperfection’. On a physical level, herbs are wonderful allies in practicing the art of self care, and can be enjoyed in a number of ways, from herbal teas, to baths, to nourishing herbal stocks which help to boost our immune system. In the next two months I will go into a little more detail about herbs for stress and herbs to encourage a good night’s sleep but here are a few ideas to be going along with which can be simply incorporated into daily life. Herbal teas: Nourishing herbs like oatstraw and nettle are a wonderful choice as they are rich in minerals and boost overall wellbeing. Calming herbs like chamomile, lemon balm and lemon verbena all taste delicious and can help us unwind after a busy day. Heart-warming herbs like rose and lime blossom can give us a moment of nurture when things feel overwhelming or we are being too hard on ourselves. All these should be available from a good herbal supplier such as Neal’s Yard or Baldwins. Herbal Baths: I wrote a more in depth article on herbal baths earlier in the year but they deserve a

Tower blocks proposed for New England Street the 18 storey Longley block is approved by the Council before finalising the heights of their own designs.
View from NE : Longley Industrial Estate 18 storey tower Three tower blocks in the area between Brighton station and London Road, have recently been announced or are in the pipeline. The first is on the Longley Industrial Estate located immediately to the north of New England House between New England Street and Elder Place, where a large, mixed use development of commercial and residential accommodation is proposed. It consists of a high, bulky building varying between 11 12 storeys over the bulk of the site with a tower above taking the total height to 18 storeys. A planning application for this has already been lodged - you can view it on the Council’s website - Planning Ref. BH2018/02598

The second high rise development is on the Vantage Point site at the corner of New England Road and New England Street just to the north of the 18 storey Longley building. This will consist of three blocks up to 16 storeys high, again for mixed commercial and residential use. Initial proposals have been made public; at the time of writing no planning application has yet been made. A third tall building development is expected on the Brewers paint warehouse site on New England Street, just opposite the two sites described above, though no details are yet available. We suspect that the developers of the latter two sites will wait to see whether

Three tall, bulky developments located closely together on land rising above the valley floor along London Road, will have a major effect on the character and appearance of this part of our city. They will not only dominate their immediate neighbourhood as viewed from London Road, but their height and bulk will also be prominently visible from many areas of the city located much further away, as well as from the surrounding Conservation Areas and heritage assets. These include views in which St Peter’s Church and the Grade 1 listed St Bartholomew’s church also feature. They will be quite out of scale and character with these two important large church buildings as well as the continuum of medium height buildings all along Valley Gardens and London Road, and will consequently have a severely detrimental effect from the visual point of view on this part of Brighton. Of course there are other functional drawbacks with large developments such as these, which will cause increased traffic congestion and parking problems.

Tall buildings create lots of other problems too. Gradually as more and more begin to appear, the character of the city’s landscape is concealed and dominated by the towers thrusting up above the skylines formed by Brighton’s hills and valleys which define the character of the city and its neighbourhoods. This will have a detrimental effect on the character of nearby Conservation Areas and other historic assets such as listed buildings. Brighton has 34 Conservation Areas, the vast majority of which are located in the central city. Although these three proposals are not themselves in a Conservation Area, their sites are surrounded on all sides by the West Hill, North Laine, Valley Gardens, Round Hill, Preston Village and Preston Park Conservation Areas, and they will be visible too from Queen’s Park Conservation Area further to the east. Tall buildings block views and overshadow streets and public spaces; they create wind tunnels making life uncomfortable for pedestrians. By creating tall building zones, the Council’s Tall Buildings Policy encourages development of concentrations of tall buildings which make all these factors even worse. From every point of view tall buildings are bad news. As well as the drawbacks referred to above, social

with the figure of 13,200 new dwellings required in the city before 2030; 300 flats is less than 2.3% of the total requirement.
In fact Simon Jenkins in a Guardian article recently described towers as the “enemies of social vitality. They are silent stakes driven through a city’s sense of community”.
A far greater number of 3 - 4 bedroom houses - which are urgently required in the city - could be provided by a small increase in the proposed density of 50 dwellings per hectare (dpu) set out in the City Plan for housing developments elsewhere in the city, (such as the fringe sites), to 55dpu. This simple measure would provide far more dwellings for the city than a relatively small number of expensive flats on the upper floors of 20 or more tall buildings.
There is a myth that the city needs high rise buildings to provide the numbers of dwellings needed to meet the City Plan targets. The truth is they don’t actually add significantly to the City’s housing stock. For example, if a typical new tower was reduced say from 15 to 10 storeys, the loss to the city would be on average only about 15 small 2-bed flats. Even if 20 tower blocks to be built in the city were similarly reduced, that would only amount to 300 flats. That is a drop in the ocean compared
