We envisage a world where children and families are safe, joyful and healthy.

Chill Out & Look About

I had a childhood every child deserves, a childhood that many miss out on and that’s why through Pressroom Philanthropy we plan to support organisations who put hope back into people’s lives.

“We established Pressroom Philanthropy to support those in the community who need it most. We are here to enable innovative communityimpact the helps bring about making people’s lives better. Pressroom Philanthropy is here to lend a hand and support those leading extraordinary work in our communities. From access to funding and strategic advice through to the delivery of engaging marketing collateral, we have a range of solutions to provide you. Get in touch and let us know how we can help you.” - Phil Taylor, CEO, Pressroom Philanthropy

Our mission is to assist and build capacity in organisations making impact in the community. We aspire to support those improving the welfare and wellbeing of children, families, and communities. We work across three core themes to enable this to happen: • Community Impact • Homelessness and Food Security • Music & the Arts

Food Security & Homelessness

We understand that there are a plethora of complex issues leading to homelessness or the ability to put a meal on the table. These issues can affect anyone, at any time in their lives. Food security and the ramifications this has on the future of societies rely on forward-thinking organisations to make sustainable differences. We want to work with organisations that have innovative ways to address these issues which provide secure, sustainable housing and food security solutions, empowering people to improve the trajectory of their lives.

Community Impact

We see strong, resilient, and supported communities as central to the wellbeing of children and families. They need access to available resources and services working alongside communities with adequate capacity to respond with agility and empathy.

Music & the Arts

The power of music for self-expression, relaxation, joy, escape, connection, therapy, reverence, and the strengthening of neural pathways cannot be understated. We recognise the prodigious impact of music and the performing arts as a therapeutic tool for a range of people, including, but not limited to the neurodiverse, those experiencing mental health issues, suffering from dementia, and physical disabilities. We are open to supporting organisations that work to widen opportunities for children’s access and participation in music and performance to improve overall wellbeing.

REBUILDING LIVES AND CHEERFUL GIVERS! MAJOR BRENDAN NOTTLE

T

he Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 is excited to offer you the inaugural edition of City Salvos Press. Many people ask where the name Project 614 comes from. It’s taken from the book of Isaiah chapter 61, verse 4. It talks about rebuilding, restoring, renewing the devastated ruins of the city, and we take that to mean the lives of the most vulnerable in our city. The Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 is passionately committed to working with the most vulnerable people across the City of Melbourne and we are equally committed to playing our part to ensuring that the City of Melbourne remains an equitable and accessible place for all. As you glance through this newspaper, that operates out of The Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614. This newspaper also

enable us to do the work that we do. Without these associations, the work of The Salvation Army Melbourne would be miniscule. The engine room of The Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 is its staff, volunteers Project 614 would cease to function. A verse in 2nd Corinthians, chapter 9, verse 7, talks of giving and reminds us that: ‘God loves a cheerful giver’. If you are able to donate some time or some money to support the work that we do with the most vulnerable people in the city please look for the relevant QR codes that are featured in this newspaper. We are deeply indebted to Phil Taylor & Joran Dilucian of Pressroom Partners and Michael Wilkinson of Wilkinson Publishing for this excellent publication. We’d also like to thank Sean Car at CBD News, Docklands News and Southbank News for continued support and help with distribution. Happy reading and we look forward to meeting you again through the medium of this newspaper in two months’ time. If you have any feedback about what you would like to see in this newspaper please don’t hesitate to contact us by emailing info614@salvationarmy.org.au.

VOLUNTEERING

PROJECT 614 IS QUICK TO REACT TO CORONAVIRUS

CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS KEY TO SUCCESS

As the world steps up its response to the spread of coronavirus, all Australians are urged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others.

E

Mass events are now being cancelled, as state and federal governments continue to respond to this evolving situation. Melbourne City Salvos has a business continuity plan in place to reduce the impact of this pandemic on our homeless community. From testing and quarantine areas through to isolation facilities we will be there to care for the most vulnerable in our community and meet human needs. While the means of delivering our services might be changing, our mission hasn’t. Together with Salvos across the country, we hope and pray for the health and safety of all Australians during this time.

OUR RECIPES FOR SUCCESS

O

ne of the things that really has an

Salvation Army café located at Bourke Street is the quality and variety of the food we serve. Our guests are seated at a table, and have their order taken by our staff and volunteers. We feel it’s really important that our guests feel respected and special when dining with us. We even have baristas thanks to our association with William Angliss Institute. We are extremely lucky to have such dedicated, professional and talented staff in our café, led by head chef Adam Thomson. Late last year, the Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 and Wilkinson

Our head chef Adam Thomson.

It really captures the essence of what we do at the Magpie Nest Café; bringing people together and offering solace and sustenance to those who need it most,” Brendan said. “Our head chef Adam Thomson delights our clients with three course meals every day and the recipes in the book are for the very meals he serves. “There is also my signature recipe for Toad in a Hole, Sandra Nottle’s delicious prawn chowder, a curried sausages

recipe from one of our volunteers, a lasagne recipe from our café manager and an entire sweet treats section in which Steve Plarre divulges generations of Ferguson Plarre recipes. The recipe for Gingerbread Nottles is even included!” Head chef Adam Thomson was inspired to take on the role at the Salvos by his love of food and his passion for giving back. “I guess my heart has always been split between creating comforting, easily approachable, uncomplicated food and wanting to help those in need,” Adam said. “I love that our community can come in and have proper table service. I love that I can not only create tasty and more importantly nutritious meals for our community, but that I can do it with surplus produce donated from Ferguson Plarre and our large supermarket chains. “If I can let someone know they’re valued through some roast pork and an apple crumble, then that’s a good day’s work to me.” Wilkinson Publishing CEO Michael Wilkinson said the work of the Melbourne Project 614 inspired him to put the book together.

THE MAGPIE NEST HOUSING PROGRAM

Collingwood President Eddie McGuire said, “We are tremendously proud to support the Salvation Army Project 614 Team to deliver the Magpie Nest Program. Collingwood has a long and proud history of helping vulnerable people in our society. 69 BOURKE STREET TURNS 125!

he Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 celebrated its 125th anniversary at our Bourke Street centre in October 2019. Another Aussie icon, Australia Post, issued a special commemorative stamp to mark the occasion. The Salvation Army purchased 69 Bourke Street from the YMCA in 1894. impressive line-up of guest orators including Former Prime Minister Alfred Deakin. Project 614 was honoured that Melbourne leaders including Lord Mayor Sally Capp, Police Commissioner Graham Ashton and Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate gave their time to speak at the 125th anniversary event. Premier Daniel Andrews and Collingwood Football Club President Eddie McGuire both gave video messages.

ach day at 7.00am, the Magpie Nest Café opens its doors to serve a free breakfast and lunch to Melbourne’s most vulnerable. It is an achievement made possible by Melbourne’s corporate community who eagerly step away from their usual 9-5 roles and don an apron for the day. Volunteers assist with all essential tasks involved with running a busy café including taking orders and plating and delivering food, clearing tables, washing dishes and cleaning up. 7-Eleven Community Investment Manager Janita Friend says a day volunteering in the café is highly sought after by team members. “The opportunity to be a part of the Salvo’s world for a day brings a new perspective to volunteers. They leave feeling their help is so valued and appreciated that they only want to do more.” Café Manager Matthew Daniels says it would be impossible to deliver the service without the support of corporate volunteers. He highlights the power the program has in breaking down barriers. “Our corporate volunteers leave feeling more connected to the Melbourne community and more comfortable stopping to have a chat with homeless community members when they see them across the City of Melbourne.”
