Kevin Heinze Grow is committed to cultivating inclusive environments for staff, consumers and carers.
We celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, bodies and abilities.
Message from the Chair
On behalf of the Kevin Heinze Grow Committee of Management, it is my pleasure to present this year’s Chair’s report.
This past year the weather in Melbourne seems to have become even more intense, with seasonal changes bringing us extremes in temperatures, high winds and storms. Nature has thrown a lot at us this year. A metaphor, perhaps, for the challenges that every organisation in the disability sector continues to experience. While the release of the final report into potential NDIS reforms recommended a series of significant changes, there are still unknowns, areas where continued strong advocacy from the sector are needed. And of course financial challenges that affect both NDIS users and providers.
AS A PROVIDER THAT ALWAYS SEEKS TO OFFER THE HIGHEST QUALITY SERVICES TO OUR PARTICIPANTS, KHG HAS INDEED EXPERIENCED A CHALLENGING YEAR.
Facing an exacting financial situation, we have had to carefully examine all of our activities while constantly keeping in mind our purpose, values and guiding principles.
Over the past year KHG has benefited from the expertise within our Leadership Team and Committee alongside external assistance to take a strategic look at our ways of operating.
The intent is to enable us to continue thriving for years to come without sacrificing what we value and what provides meaning to our participants and the broader community. This represents ongoing work that we will prioritise in the year to come.
How fortunate KHG is to have such a strong and committed staff team and a loyal and hardworking cohort of volunteers – all of whom provide so much care and professionalism where and when it is most needed.
They also provide invaluable contributions to the strategic work of the Committee and, most importantly, support the everincreasing number of participants who gain so much from attending KHG, experiencing and learning from our beautiful garden environments.
This year, the Committee once again welcomed fantastic new members and also farewelled a very dear and much loved long-time member – the incomparable Bruce Entwisle. Bruce has served on our Committee as the Kiwanis representative for decades, often reminding us of the principles and intent of Kevin Heinze himself in establishing the Garden Centre in the mid-1970s. Fortunately Bruce has not left KHG entirely, and can still be seen volunteering in the garden spaces at Doncaster and lending a hand at those yummy sausage sizzles.
In concluding, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who gave of their time and resources over the past year to enable KHG to continue being the thriving organisation that it is. We have had some valuable and much appreciated assistance from many external organisations, and have been very fortunate to attract and retain exceptional staff and leaders, volunteers and students.
Thank you all!

Message from our CEO
In a year which has been challenging for the disability sector, it has been a privilege to see so many participants achieve so much.
This year we have seen participants secure mainstream employment, move on to further education, and commence living independently. Congratulations to every one of you on your many achievements.
We continue to successfully secure support to improve our facilities and service offering and, after several years of work, we were proud to launch Café Kevin at our Wetherby Road site in February. If it has been a while since you’ve seen the site, please get in touch to arrange a visit. A lot has changed and you may be surprised at everything we have to offer.
ONE OF THE GREAT JOYS OF WORKING AT KHG IS BEING WITNESS TO PEOPLE PROGRESSING TOWARDS THEIR GOALS
Our Programs
Over the year we have offered a range of programs aimed at creating opportunities for meaningful inclusion and positive personal development through therapeutic horticulture.
This year we commenced delivering our Café Kevin program at our Doncaster site, and expanded our work with carers and older adults. Our participants span from teenagers to older adults, and encompass people with:
• physical, cognitive and psychosocial disabilities
• people experiencing mental ill-health
• people at risk of social isolation
During the year ahead we will seek to extend capacity at our Coburg site and strengthen our service delivery partnerships to reach new groups of participants.
ReGrow is a therapeutic horticulture program designed for older adults with lived experience of stroke, acquired brain injury (ABI), progressive neurological disorders, mental health challenges, and social isolation.
The Monday ReGrow group, for example, has been together for over two years, offering a consistent space for participants to form lasting friendships. For many, it is their main social outlet.
The group also maintains a thriving market-style garden, regularly taking home fresh food crops, which they often turn into baked goods and recipes to share with one another.

GROW ON THE GO
This year the Grow on the Go team welcomed Senior Trainer Meagan. The program continues to thrive with Meagan and Jasper leading our mobile gardening teams several days per week.
Our regular customers play a vital role in the program’s success, helping us deliver a supportive, educational, and hands-on garden maintenance experience. For the first time since COVID, the program is fully subscribed.

Our food production beds continue to be a favourite activity for participants and staff, from seasonal planning to the vibrant harvests they produce.
Last November, we enjoyed a bumper crop of: potatoes, corn and tomatoes. In winter, we planted salad greens which were harvested in early spring: spinach, rocket, pak choy, silverbeet and kale.
The Grow Program has also been enriched with increased visual supports to enhance participants’ communication, from morning meetings to group activities.

GROW GLEN EIRA
The GROW Glen Eira program kicked off again in early 2024, with KHG reaching out to the Glen Eira community to spread the word and a new program participant, Fraser, joining mid-year.

Like the Grow Program, our Teenage Program has been actively engaged in their food production garden beds. The participants have designed the layout and researched seasonal planting options.
Currently, their beds are flourishing with: kale, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic and parsley.
Rebbie, our trainer who works across both the Grow and Teenage programs, fosters integration and continuity between the garden spaces and activities. The Teenage Program also contributed to the planning and planting of our new Three Sisters Garden near the Maintenance Shed.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH:
Café Kevin
In early 2024, Kevin Heinze Grow’s Doncaster site proudly launched Café Kevin, a vibrant community space where participants and visitors can enjoy fresh, garden-to-table food and coffee.
This café program provides participants with the opportunity to develop essential café skills, including customer service, food preparation, and barista training. Since its launch, Café Kevin has been embraced by participants, staff, and the wider community, becoming a popular hub at KHG Doncaster.
WHAT SETS CAFÉ KEVIN
APART IS ITS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY, USING FRESH PRODUCE FROM ITS OWN ADJACENT HERB AND VEGETABLE GARDEN.
Participants actively tend to this garden, ensuring a supply of fresh ingredients for the café’s recipes.
As they learn how to grow and care for produce, participants also discover how to use these ingredients in easy-to-make recipes, which they can recreate at home. These experiences build participants’ confidence and equip them with practical skills in both food preparation and café management.
The café’s launch was celebrated in conjunction with the unveiling of a beautiful mural painted directly onto the exterior of Café Kevin itself. This mural was the result of a collaborative effort between participants of Kevin Heinze Grow’s art program and former staff member and artist, Angharad Neal-Williams.
The creation process began with a series of workshops where participants gathered inspiration from the surrounding garden and nursery, exploring plants, flowers, and natural colours as themes. After experimenting with different shapes, patterns, and materials, a final mural design was created, incorporating ideas from everyone involved.
OVER SEVERAL DAYS, PARTICIPANTS TOOK PART IN PAINTING THE MURAL, TRANSFORMING CAFÉ KEVIN INTO A COLOURFUL, COMMUNITY-INSPIRED MASTERPIECE.
A WELCOMING SPACE
The mural and Café Kevin were unveiled together at a lively community celebration, symbolizing the café’s deep connection to the garden and its role as a space for both creativity and learning.
Since its opening, Café Kevin has flourished as a welcoming space for the community, where visitors can enjoy a toasted sandwich and coffee while supporting a local notfor-profit charity. The café offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the garden and nursery, while also nourishing the community in more ways than one.
Kevin Heinze Grow:
"“It was such a joy working with the participants at KHG to develop ideas and gather inspiration from the site to create the mural design. The participants had such great ideas and created amazing concepts. The installation was a fun process, getting to work with everyone and collaborate to paint the mural.”
Angharad Neal-Williams, Former staff member and artist
“I really enjoy helping out the community by working in Café Kevin and serving the community coffees, salad rolls, and toasties. It improves my people skills. I really enjoy talking to people that come to Café Kevin.”

THE EVOLUTION OF THE GROW MODEL:
A Path to Therapeutic Excellence
For 45 years Kevin Heinze Grow has utilised nature as a powerful driver for experiential learning and personal development.
Initially designed for young people transitioning from school, the approach has expanded and evolved into what is now known as the "GROW Model." This evidencebased, holistic framework embodies decades of experience in therapeutic horticulture, continuously refined by insights from both staff and participants.
Led by Patrick Wain, Coordinator of Therapeutic Horticulture, KHG completed version 5.0 of the GROW Model following an extensive 12-month review in early 2024. KHG completed version 5.0 of the GROW Model following an extensive 12-month review. This review process involved staff and participants, reflecting KHG's commitment to evolving with the needs of its community.
The project was launched after staff expressed a desire for more input and enhanced training opportunities, leading to an in-depth evaluation of practices through therapeutic gardening sessions, meetings, and staff development days.
KHG’s leadership and Committee of Management recognised the importance of this comprehensive review to maintain effective therapeutic engagement and align with the organisation’s strategic goals. This includes positioning KHG as an industry leader in therapeutic horticulture and ensuring accessibility to its programs. As Kevin Heinze, the organisation’s namesake, once said:
"It is most important in any organisation to be able to grow with the needs of the participants."
The new version of the GROW Model integrates industry research, insights from fellow practitioners, and external resources, including PhD research conducted at KHG. It is now available in both physical and digital formats, serving as a key reference tool for staff.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL
IMPACT OF THE GROW MODEL
Internally, the GROW Model functions as a vital resource for staff, equipping them with training materials and practical examples that enhance professional development.
As Dermot Sheehy, Coordinator of GROW Development, explains:
"Using the elements within the GROW Model as a guide, I can focus on delivering meaningful, empowering group sessions and encourage participants to achieve their goals."
Externally, the GROW Model supports knowledge-sharing within the broader therapeutic horticulture industry.
KHG is committed to offering workshops and courses for professionals interested in expanding their expertise. Ruben Ayers, Coordinator of Programs, emphasises its value:
"When reviewing our programs, I refer to the GROW Model to ensure we are delivering KHG’s high standard of Therapeutic Horticulture in line with our mission and principles."
A COMMITMENT TO CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
KHG is committed to ongoing updates of the GROW Model, incorporating feedback from real-world experiences. Incremental updates will be made as needed, with a comprehensive review scheduled every three years.
The next review will begin in 2026, ensuring that KHG remains at the forefront of therapeutic horticulture.
In short, the GROW Model represents KHG’s enduring commitment to growth, innovation, and the wellbeing of its participants, offering both a framework for staff and a tool for expanding therapeutic practices across the industry.

LILY’S STORY
MEET LILY*
Despite receiving her NDIS plan in 2021, Lily had hardly used any of her NDIS funds by the time she engaged Michele, KHG Support Coordinator in 2023.
Lily’s family saw to all her needs, with her sister Amy acting as her primary informal supports. Alongside caring for her sister, Amy also works part time, lives 45 mins away and has a family of her own.
At the time, Lily had been on a foot surgery waitlist for several years, only leaving her house with a family member for medical appointments.
WITH MICHELE’S SUPPORT
When Lily was called in for surgery at short notice, Michele took the reins to ensure Lily leveraged her NDIS plan to receive the supports she needed:.
• Attended Hospital Care meetings
• Arranged an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Bowel Nurse and daily Support Workers
• Stayed on top of Lily's budget
• Organised Nurse Next Door
• Booked home assessment and modifications
• Hired necessary equipment
* We have changed the participant's name to protect her privacy.
A NEW LEASE ON LIFE
Since engaging Michele’s Support Coordination services, Lily has a very different life. She now has a team of Support Workers, a Physiotherapist, a Bowel Nurse and an Occupational Therapist. She is up walking on a frame, has new orthotic boots and has recently commenced hydrotherapy with her Physio, which she loves. Lily’s sister Amy has been able to take a step back, engaging Support Workers to take Lily to some of her medical appointments.
"The Support Coordination we have received from Michele has supported both Lily and me to access the services Lily needed to enable her to live as independently as possible, to socialise with others and enjoy her life."

FAREWELL
PEPPERTREE PLACE,
Hello Ilma Lever Gardens
In July 2024, we bid farewell to Peppertree Place, our Coburg home for the last five years.
On July 15, we officially opened the doors to our new Coburg location at the wonderful Ilma Lever Gardens, 2A Station Street.
The move has been the product of months of careful planning and supportive, deliberate work by our dedicated team. Participant goals and support needs, including visits to the new site and garden projects centred around memories and mementos, were built into the program to invite participants into the project and make the transition as smooth as possible.
OUR NEW KHG COBURG SITE PROVIDES SUPERIOR FACILITIES AND GARDENS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED BY ILMA LEVER FOR DISABLED PEOPLE TO LEARN AND ENJOY GARDENING.
As part of our big move from Peppertree Place to the Ilma Lever Gardens, numerous KHG volunteers offered their time to help clear the space of weeds and overgrown plants, focusing on creating and growing a therapeutic and inclusive garden space.
A huge thank you to the team for their invaluable support in preparing the gardens for our Grow participants to begin their work!
To address the emotional challenges inherent in the transition from Peppertree Place, Art Therapy Masters student, JD, established a collective Arts Project that would bridge the experiences of participants at both sites. Throughout the Therapeutic Arts sessions, participants expressed their feelings about the move, engaging in various creative activities. They painted the garden background with their hands and fingers, created ink blots that became figures, and added magazine images of flowers and plants to form a vibrant tree.
Dried flowers and leaves from Peppertree Place were incorporated, fostering a tangible connection to their previous home.
This project allowed participants to reflect on cherished memories of Peppertree while celebrating new beginnings at Ilma Lever Gardens. The art-making process provided a space for grief and excitement to coexist, encouraging spontaneity, playfulness, and personal expression. One participant shared,
“I’m just getting used to the new site. I was at the old site for three years. [Making the art project] brings back memories and makes me happy.”
The love and care poured into this artwork is a testament to the meaningful connections and resilience of our participants as they embrace this new chapter.
Since the move in July, a lot of work has has been done by our team of GROW participants, volunteers and staff to make the new site feel like home. This culminated in our Coburg nursery launch in November. We’re excited about the future and watching the Ilma Lever Gardens evolve as a vibrant community hub for our participants and the broader community.

Kevin Heinze Grow:
CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS:
A Year of Dedication and Impact
At Kevin Heinze Grow (KHG), our team of volunteers have been nothing short of extraordinary over the past year.
Their unwavering support has been integral to the delivery of our services and programs, enriching the lives of our community members. From assisting staff in running programs to providing direct support to participants, and maintaining our Doncaster and Coburg sites, our volunteers have made a significant impact.
One of the most remarkable achievements this year was the successful relocation from Peppertree Place to 2A Station Street. This transition was an epic undertaking involving participants, staff, and volunteers working collaboratively to ensure a smooth move. As we began to settle into our new location, a maintenance list quickly grew – from collapsing garden beds to broken gutters.
We were thrilled when our new maintenance volunteer, Gary, joined the team. On his very first day, he climbed a ladder to fix a hanging gutter on the Back Shed and pruned a vine threatening to damage the roof.
Kevin Heinze
Gary shares what motivates him to volunteer; “I enjoy being outdoors and everyone has been really welcoming, helpful and friendly. And I just enjoy doing something worthwhile. It’s nice helping people.”
His enthusiasm for volunteering reflects the spirit of community at KHG.
Together with our team of volunteers, Gary is working on transforming our new nursery area into a functional space that we can’t wait to share with our customers.
He appreciates the opportunity to contribute, saying, “It’s nice to feel I’m doing something of use. It’s only a small thing, but it’s a nice feeling knowing that you’ve done something for somebody else.”
For those considering volunteering, Gary encourages them to take the leap:
“Just give it a go. There is no harm in trying. There are things anyone can do, and you don’t have to do what I’m doingthere’s lots to do. I recommend people give volunteering a try.”
As we reflect on this past year, we are immensely grateful for our volunteers’ dedication and the positive energy they bring to KHG.
Their contributions are vital to our mission, and we look forward to continuing this journey together, welcoming more community members to join us in making a difference.

Treasurer report
Kevin Heinze Grow has undergone enormous transformation over the last 6 years, significantly expanding its service offerings and the number of participants that it serves.
This growth has been underpinned by sound financial management, with the organisation having navigated numerous challenges – including those posed by establishing a second site and the uncertainty of COVID – while consistently posting a surplus over this period. However, due to a number of factors – some deliberate decisions, some unavoidable external impacts – Kevin Heinze Grow posted a deficit for the 23/24 financial year.
Total expenditure increased by 11.6% from the previous financial year to $2,648,832. Kevin Heinze Grow’s most significant investment continues to be in its people, with the organisation’s staff wages (and associated costs) reaching $1,937,918 – 82% of total expenses. The overall increase is partially attributable to increased staffing costs and other inflationary impacts across various expenses. Additionally, a significant review of our GROW model required significant investment of resources as did relocation of our Coburg site from Peppertree Place to the Ilma Lever Gardens. Both of these investments allow the organisation to strengthen its practice, create opportunities for future growth and solidify Kevin Heinze Grow’s reputation as one of the world’s preeminent therapeutic horticulture organisations.
Total revenue decreased by 3.1% from the previous financial year to $2,302,057. This is largely attributable to a decrease in revenue from NDIS-funded participant care as a result of decreases in funding. Much has been made in the media of the challenges facing disability services providers with a National Disability Services survey finding that over half of providers posted a loss or just broke even in 22/23. While Kevin Heinze Grow is more diversified than many other providers, delivering care to the high standards that we expect of ourselves is increasingly challenging in the current regulatory environment.
However, the organisation is already responding to this changing environment and posted a surplus across the final four months of the financial year. Strong foundations are in place to return to surplus in 24/25.
