Our vision
Connected communities where everyone has equitable access to fresh and nutritious food with no food wasted
Our mission
Our Story
• GROW ACCESS:
Open Table began in Brunswick in 2013 with a simple idea: gather surplus food that would otherwise be wasted, cook it into a meal, and share it with neighbours. Those early dinners at the Brunswick Neighbourhood House showed how surplus food could spark connection as well as nourishment.
Build reliable access to healthy food for people experiencing disadvantage.
• TRANSFORM SURPLUS: Turn food that would otherwise go to waste into nutritious meals shared through inclusive community programs.
• CONNECT COMMUNITIES: Bring together diverse people through shared meals, education, and events that strengthen belonging.
• COLLABORATE FOR CHANGE: Work with volunteers, partners, and local councils to create fairer, more sustainable food systems.
• INSPIRE ACTION: Empower others to reduce food waste and share food through education and storytelling.
4 Open Table
What started as one shared meal has grown into a network of lunches, pantries, workshops and playgroups across Melbourne. Together with volunteers, students and community partners, we collect and transform surplus fresh produce into free, shared meals and welcoming food spaces for everyone. Today, Open Table remains an independent, secular organisation grounded in care, inclusion and community. Every program we run is shaped by a simple belief: good food should be shared not wasted. And in sharing it, we help build stronger, fairer and more connected communities.

2024-25 Annual Report
Chairperson’s Report This year has seen us widen our table through the creation of new friendships. With new partners, we delivered intergenerational programs focusing on empowerment through education, and connection through play and creativity. Our new Cook & Connect playgroup program nurtures food connection and learning amongst little ones, their carers and senior community groups (created with invaluable support from VicHealth and Merri-Bek City Council) whilst our Student Bites cookbook collaboration with the Just Food Collective brought new youth connections and a creative spirit. It is through these new friendships that we can continue to shape our community work, widen our impact and strengthen our table. Huge thanks to our fantastic Open Table team, CEO Peta Christensen, Adam, Aisha, our amazing cooks and workshop presenters for another impactful year. Through your ongoing care and dedication, we deliver community programs full of heart, workshops that inspire and community lunches that transform surplus unwanted food into delicious meals whilst providing a place for connection. Our Board welcomed two new members - Devnith De Silva, as the new Board Secretary who shares his passion for food security and good governance, and Edwyn Shiel, as a General Member, who brings local and international experience across sustainable development, food security and nutrition. Warm thanks are extended to our continuing Board members — Jess Young, Miranda Campbell, Jimmy Ma and Cal Pruiti — for their ongoing commitment and stewardship of Open Table. Together, they bring a depth and diversity of experience across governance, social enterprise, partnerships and community-centred work. Their collective insight, care and guidance continue to play an important role in supporting our team, strengthening the organisation and guiding Open Table’s work. We farewelled Alanna Brown as our Workshops Coordinator after many years of service.
Alanna’s passion for engagement and low waste cooking were key aspects in the creation of our workshop program. Thank you for your unique warmth and care and for the amazing library of tasty recipes! Our staff and board members recently collaborated on developing a new set of strategic directions. Looking ahead for the next 3 years, we wish to strengthen our community programs, deepen our partnerships, and build our financial sustainability. Thanks to Impact Practice for guiding us through this process. We look forward to sharing this with all of you in the coming months. On behalf of the Open Table Board, I would like to thank our community partners and supporters, our members and all of our wonderful volunteers for their continued commitment. Open Table is made possible through your generosity and collective talents. Special thanks to our friends at Pressroom Philanthropy, whose incredible guidance and support help us to share our story for greater impact. We look forward to new directions in 2026 and to welcoming more friends at our open table.

2024-25 Annual Report
CEO Report This year, Open Table has continued to do what it does best — bringing people together through good food, generosity and connection. Whether through shared meals, open pantries or playful cooking sessions with young families, we’ve seen how food can spark belonging and strengthen community. In 2024–25, our team and volunteers rescued around 30 tonnes of food that would otherwise have gone to landfill. That beautiful, imperfect produce became more than 4,000 nutritious meals shared at 64 community lunches and free-food markets — nourishment that honours the hands that grew it and the land that sustains us. Much of the creative work behind our new Student Bites cookbook also unfolded this year. We were incredibly fortunate to have Brodie Nalywajko (Pierogi Studio) style and photograph the recipes, Luke Pringipas design the book with such warmth and clarity, and Pressroom Philanthropy generously support the printing. We also became a registered Social Enterprise, a milestone that reflects our long-held commitment to pairing environmental care with community wellbeing. This year we farewelled Alanna Brown, whose skill and warmth shaped our workshop programs for many years. In March, we welcomed Aisha Lloyd-Bonney, whose energy and imagination are already inspiring new ideas. I also want to acknowledge our Operations and Volunteer Manager, Adam Bell, whose calm leadership and capacity kept the wheels turning across all Open Pantry programs — lunches, pantries, markets, volunteers and food collections. His behind-the-scenes care is a steady foundation for so much of what we do. My thanks go to the whole team. Eloise Easton brought extraordinary warmth and skill to Cook & Connect. Our workshop facilitators — Melanie Ryan, Melanie Leeson, Jessica Ridley and Kitty Kelso — delivered uplifting,
12 Open Table
practical workshops across Melbourne. Kitty also cooked alongside Hiroko Ooka and Alexandra Baxter, creating colourful, abundant meals each week with our army of volunteers, whose humour and generosity infuse every table we set. And Angela O’Toole, who has served Open Table in many roles over the years — including as CEO — continued supporting our accounts and payroll with steadiness and care. My gratitude also goes to our volunteer Board — Melissa Lawson (President), Cal Pruiti (Vice President), Devnith De Silva (Secretary), Jimmy Ma (Treasurer), Jessica Young, Miranda Campbell and Edwyn Shiell — for their guidance, time and unwavering belief in our mission. None of this would be possible without our 100+ volunteers, whose 2,500 hours of service brought warmth and reliability to every corner of our organisation. To everyone who supported us this year — our partners, funders, donors and community collaborators — thank you. As we look to the year ahead, we carry forward this spirit of connection and collaboration. Our programs are deepening their roots, our partnerships are expanding, and we continue finding new ways to share food, knowledge and care. When people come together around food and community, remarkable things can grow.

Open Pantry: COMMUNITY LUNCHES, PANTRY & MARKETS
Open Pantry is Open Table’s suite of food access and community connection programs — bringing together our community lunches, community pantry, and community markets. Across all three, the focus is the same: good food, shared care, and a warm welcome for anyone who walks through the door. Every Saturday at Bargoonga Nganjin Library in North Fitzroy, our community lunches bring neighbours together for colourful, vegetable-rich meals made from rescued ingredients. At Kathleen Syme Library in Carlton, our monthly lunches have become a valued touchpoint for students, older residents and anyone seeking company, nourishment and a friendly table. Our cooks and volunteers transform surplus produce into abundant, delicious meals with creativity and care. As our much loved lead cook Kitty shared: “People tell us this is the most vegetables they eat all week. Volunteers love learning how to use every part of the produce — stems, leaves, skins — and discovering what’s possible when you cook with what you have.” These meals often arrive at exactly the right moment. One regular diner told us: “I’d just come home after six months in hospital — no food in the fridge, no electricity. I remembered coming before I got sick, so I came straight back. I got a hot meal, another one to take home, fresh fruit and veg… and the volunteers took such good care of me. It felt like family.”
The Community Pantry at Bargoonga Nganjin provides a flexible, stigma-free way for community members to access fresh produce and pantry staples. It offers choice, dignity and a soft place to land for anyone needing extra support throughout the week. On the Fitzroy Housing Estate, our bi-monthly Open Pantry Community Markets bring fresh food, pantry items and neighbourly connection directly to residents. Delivered in partnership with Yarra Libraries and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), these markets create a lively, practical hub where residents can pick up ingredients, meet local services and share recipes and conversation. Our long-standing partnerships with Yarra Libraries and City of Melbourne Libraries continue to deepen each year. Together we are reimagining libraries as warm, food-positive community hubs — places where creativity, learning and nourishment sit side by side. Their vision and generosity are central to the success of Open Pantry. The heart of Open Pantry is our volunteers. Their generosity, humour and steady presence infuse every lunch and every market with warmth and welcome. Together with our partners and community, Open Pantry continues to show what’s possible when good food, creativity and care come together.
Our meals are made possible by the generosity of our food rescue ecosystem. Each week, we collect surplus produce and pantry items from local food businesses, alongside ongoing support from Foodbank and OzHarvest. These partnerships ensure good food stays in our community — nourishing people instead of going to landfill.

Cook & Connect Playgroups: Cook & Connect began in late 2024 with a small pilot at the Glenroy Community Hub, funded by Merribek City Council. Families quickly embraced the opportunity for children aged 0–4 to explore food through play — feeling, tasting, mixing, smelling, pouring and experimenting in ways that aren’t always possible at home. Research shows that positive, play-based exposure to food helps children build confidence, curiosity and healthy long-term relationships with food. Parents tell us they’re seeing this firsthand: “My daughter loved trying kiwi in last week’s session and kept asking for the fruit for the rest of the week.” “My son has greatly improved his cutting skills and increased his interest in cooking.” Through the Merri-bek FLAG initiative and in partnership with Merri Food Hub, we secured VicHealth Growing Communities funding to continue Cook & Connect in Glenroy and expand to Fawkner. These close partnerships help embed the program within a broader neighbourhood food ecosystem, supporting families with joyful early-years food play, fresh produce and culturally welcoming spaces. A key strength of the program is the team behind it. Alongside our staff and volunteers, we host Dietetics and Nutrition students from Deakin University and La Trobe University, who support both the playgroups and our Seasonal Community Meals. Their enthusiasm, evidence-informed guidance and gentle support enrich each session and provide meaningful placement experience in community health.
16 Open Table
The Seasonal Community Meals, also funded by VicHealth, have become a highlight of our year. These events bring together cultural cooks from the community, student placements, volunteers and families to create abundant, multicultural feasts for the whole neighbourhood. They are deeply intergenerational — toddlers, parents, grandparents, students and long-term residents all gathering around shared tables. There have also been tender, spontaneous moments. During one session, the older Italian women’s social group at the Glenroy Hub invited our families to join them on their pasta day, welcoming the children with homemade sauce, treats and warm conversation. At Christmas, the groups reunited for a relaxed celebration filled with food, music and connection — a reminder of how naturally community forms when food is at the centre. Cook & Connect continues to grow in Glenroy and Fawkner, strengthening our partnerships with Merribek Council, Merri Food Hub, community cooks, volunteers and student placements. Together, we are embedding joyful early-years food learning as a valued and vibrant part of community life.

No Waste Cook Club Workshops and Community Engagements: Food waste continues to be a major challenge across Australia, and our No Waste Cook Club workshops help people build the everyday skills and confidence needed to reduce it. Through simple, hands-on activities we support communities to cook creatively, use what they have, and waste less. This year our team travelled across Victoria delivering workshops for local councils, university students and community organisations. Many councils were especially interested in our induction cooking expertise, and our facilitators shared practical, livedexperience solutions to help households make the shift with confidence. As interest grows, we’re expanding our induction-cooking content to support more communities in reducing emissions and embracing sustainable cooking.
What Our Partners Said: “No sales pitch — just grassroots solutions and knowledge shared between presenter and participants.” – Macedon Ranges Shire Council “The passion and enthusiasm from Open Table — everyone we engaged with was kind and responsive.” – Moira Shire Council “We love how accessible the workshops are, and the No waste cookbook is a valued resource for participants.” – Maroondah Shire Looking ahead, we’re excited to keep deepening our partnerships, continue growing our workshop offerings, and share even more creative, low-waste, community-centred learning in the year ahead.
Our university partnerships also continued to thrive. At Melbourne University, we delivered a series of lively workshops for the Naarm Scholars program, helping students explore food sustainability through experimentation, curiosity and play. We also ran student cooking workshops at Kathleen Syme Library, supporting young people to stretch their budgets and build everyday food confidence. A highlight of the year was working on our upcoming Student Bites cookbook, created with the brilliant team at the Just Food Collective. We were incredibly fortunate to have Brodie Nalywajko (Pierogi Studio) generously donate her time to style and photograph the recipes, and Luke Pringipas layout and design the book — bringing warmth, creativity and personality to something we can’t wait to share next year. We were also proud to receive Social Traders Social Enterprise Certification this year, formally recognising Open Table as a mission-led organisation using trade and fee-for-service activity to deliver social and environmental impact. This certification strengthens our ability to partner with councils, universities and organisations, and helps generate income that directly supports our free community meals.
