MISSION To mobilise community support to respond to the immediate needs of young children, in particular vulnerable children and their families.

VISION

THREE PILLARS OF BIG GROUP HUG 1

To build strong families - to enhance the bond between parent or care giver and child by alleviating some of the financial burden and stress often experienced by families in vulnerable situations when they have a baby or young child.

2

To build strong community - offer genuine, ongoing opportunities for members of the community; individuals, community organisations, schools, government, corporations and small business to engage in philanthropic and altruistic work for the betterment of their communities.

3

To build a sustainable world for the future - to help minimise waste by promoting the upcycling, recycling and rehoming of preloved items, thereby reducing landfill and environmental damage caused by waste.

For ordinary people to work together to protect every young child in Australia from the adverse effects of disadvantage.

GUIDING PRINCIPALS

SUPPORT We will provide responsive, nonjudgmental support and material aid targeting disadvantaged, marginalised or vulnerable parents with young children (aged 0-16 years).

 SERVICES We are committed to an integrated service model for early childhood services, delivery and support.

 PARTNERSHIPS We will work in partnership with and complement existing social services.

FOCUSSED Bureaucracy will not define our approach nor deter us from mobilising community support to seek and distribute material assistance to vulnerable children and their families in their time of need.

ACCOUNTABLE We will be transparent and accountable for all of our activities and actions.

LETTER FROM FOUNDER & CHAIR OF THE BOARD, ANGELA WOOD This year brought opportunities and challenges beyond our imaginings. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the McLaughlan Family, Big Group Hug received our first major donation – our very own delivery van. Our impact soared, because of this extraordinary gift as we were not only able to collect donations, but importantly deliver urgently needed items in a timely manner. Many of our dreams were realised this year, beyond the van, as we also farewelled our original logo, replacing it with a more modern version while maintaining the original feel and colours. Set to launch many new events, fundraisers, and most importantly opportunities for the community to engage with us to make an impact in the lives of children, needless to say we were VERY excited about the year ahead. That is until the pandemic hit, and it hit HARD. The perfect storm ensued as we felt the immediate financial impact – our capacity to raise funds dwindled, our ability to open our doors to volunteers was limited, and our ability to accept material aid donations from our generous support base was also restricted. Concurrently, we were met with an unprecedented upswing in demand for our services, sadly, many from families finding themselves in financial distress for the first time ever. As swiftly as the closures hit us, so too did the ingenuity and generosity of our supporters. The City of Whittlesea Council took the step of providing significant funds to supplement the material aid needed to support local families. Without their immediate, swift, hassle free help we may not have survived the pandemic let alone helped the 43% more families we managed to get to. The real everyday heroes, the volunteers, once again managed feats beyond belief. Devoting their days to home sorting, manning the warehouse with a skeleton staff and most of all, developing new and ingenious ways to continue our service. Because of this, many children found support at a time they needed it most. We are so proud of our adaptability – establishing our Drive-By Donation Days, home and online sorting parties, Camp Hug camp out, and Mother’s Day Challenge, just to name a few of the innovative and creative ways of keeping our promise to help families in need, whilst in hard lockdown ourselves.

Financial donations from benevolent figures became even more important and two families in particular – the Da Gama Pinto Family and the McLaughlan Family – kept our doors open with very generous and ongoing financial contributions. Words cannot convey our sincere and immense gratitude to these families, as without their generosity, we in turn, would not have been able to help those in need. I also want to personally thank our Local Member of Parliament, Colin Brookes and his team who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes for the last few years to give and find support for us. What does it take to move a mountain? Small steps, piece by piece, day by day. Together we achieved incredible feats this year. Challenges certainly lay ahead but, if nothing else, we have proved our resilience in the face of adversity. We have given families what they need to thrive and we have nurtured our children with a Big Group Hug.

MEET A BOARD MEMBER Paul Armstrong I have been fortunate to have been a founding member of the Big Group Hug board, way back in 2014, when being a board member also meant being prepared to roll your sleeves up and get involved! As the years have flown by, it’s been hugely thrilling to see Big Group Hug continue to grow and embed itself into Melbourne’s northern suburbs as an increasingly vital community partner in providing assistance to families in need. I’ve also been humbled by the sheer amount of willing and committed volunteer support Big Group Hug receives from members of our local community – whether it be sorting, delivering, pram cleaning or sausage sizzling – there is always someone willing to put their hand up and help get the job done.

6 | Big Group Hug Annual Report 2019/20

Without a grumble, and without need of thanks. It’s an amazing job you all do, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. These days my contributions to Big Group Hug are more in a strategic and governance sense (I haven’t had to build storage shelving lately!), but I continue to take a keen interest in the everyday operations of the organisation and love to provide assistance where I can. I feel Big Group Hug, as an organisation, is now superbly positioned to enter its next exciting phase of growth and I am incredibly privileged to have played a small part of the journey so far.

OUR REACH. OUR IMPACT Big Group Hug’s reach is widespread, supporting families across Melbourne from 32 different council areas. These council areas included 121 suburbs, with requests coming from 76 different Welfare Agencies. Of course, it is not just the sheer numbers that count. Our reach has grown from servicing just the early years, to now incorporating older children, young mothers, and caregivers experiencing difficulty. We are always seeking new and innovative ways to support families doing it tough. We set no boundaries, no restrictions, just pure oldfashioned support no matter where it is needed.

List of Councils: • Banyule City Council • Bayside City Council • Brimbank City Council • Casey City Council • City of Darebin • Darebin City Council • Frankston City Council • Greater Dandenong City Council • Hobsons Bay City Council • Hume City Council • Kingston City Council • Knox City Council • Manningham City Council

Big Group Hug Annual Report 2019/20 | 7

SNAPSHOT OF FAMILIES ASSISTED Overall, this year saw a 27% increase in the number of families assisted by Big Group Hug. This amounts to an average of 111 families and 199 children helped per month. These families included 2,416 children and babies. During the height of the pandemic, 47% more goods were delivered to families, all this despite a huge reduction in operating hours, people power and financial donations. Financial hardship and family violence continue to be the two main reasons for seeking our service this year, with newly arrived migrants, asylum seekers and refugees also presenting a substantial proportion of those we help. Demand remains strong for all goods, but especially for high value items such as prams, cots and car seats. Access to these items remains a challenge and we are continually seeking ways to address this. Nappies and clothes represent almost 75% of donations distributed this year and we are grateful for the support from organisations such as The Nappy Collective and Share the Dignity for helping us supplement our donations to meet the growing demand for these items. THE STORIES THAT MATTER This is but a snapshot of the families we have supported in the past year. While these stories speak for themselves, Big Group Hug continues to share these stories to provide a voice for those who find themselves helpless, hopeless… unheard. These are all of our stories; they could be any of us and they are not unique. Our work is endless but not thankless, the ability to provide some care for those in need is a privilege and a responsibility we take very seriously, and can only fulfill thanks to the generosity of so many.

Janet* is a single mum with two children and a victim of severe family violence. Living together in public housing, Janet is struggling to pay for the items her kids need. Her ex-husband does not pay for any child support and she is receiving minimal income from Centrelink. On top of that, Janet is changing her daughter’s school and is having to spend her money on school uniforms, and books. So, she is now left with even less to purchase nappies or toys. But we can support Janet and give them these essential items, so they can stay safe and comfortable. Thanks to Big Group Hug and our care packages, Janet can have nappies and buy a new school uniform for her daughter. She can feel at ease knowing that her children have everything they need.

Tony* and his wife had a newborn baby last year. But Tony, unfortunately also lost his job. Soon, they were falling behind in paying their utilities and rent, and the bills were piling up. Not long after, he and his family were unable to afford anything for their baby. They got in touch with Big Group Hug and we helped provide him with everything and anything (from a bottle to a playmat) to help Tony and his family get back on their feet. Thanks to Big Group Hug, Tony and his family could think more about being the best parents they could be for their baby and ensure that their newborn is safe and healthy. Our support meant that we could relieve some of the financial stress that Tony and his wife were under, and help them reconnect with their brand-new miracle.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” – Elizabeth Andrew

Our Volunteers. Our Rock There were approximately 200 active volunteers supporting Big Group Hug as of June 2020.

Welcoming strangers and old friends, the team work to support families with good humour and dedication.

What does it take to move a mountain? Some would say centuries of erosion... each grain swept away by the wind and water. Well in our case, that mountain is Mt. Sortmore and despite hundreds of ‘people’ hours, it just never seems to shrink - as soon as one mountain is conquered, it is replaced by hundreds more items, donated with love.

All volunteers, all persistent, tenacious and hardworking, this is a team that cannot be commended highly enough.

This year mountains have been moved thanks to our tremendous volunteers. Each piece of clothing that forms part of this mountain symbolises a community coming together; the parent/ caregiver that loved it enough to pass it on to those less fortunate; the volunteers who accepted, sorted and repackaged it; the care worker who delivers it, and the family who breathed new life into it by using it to care for their little one. But so much happens in the background so that Mt. Sortmore can continue to thrive. Knitting groups working through the dim evening light to make beanies for premmie babies, school kids hosting a cake stall, wearing silly hats or donating their time in the warehouse, administrators who capture data, respond to Facebook messages, answer emails deep into the night once their own little ones are finally asleep. The friends who join together to do a big collection of items, the families who open their doors to strangers dropping off those items, our van drivers who navigate the traffic to get to a labour suite so a baby being born has a blanket to be wrapped in and a comfort toy to snuggle. Every small gesture, every 10-hour day, every conversation, every tear shed... this is what drives Big Group Hug, the HUG that enables us to wrap our arms around the children in our community. And our warehouse team, battling the heat, the cold, the joy and the tears? Well, every organisation needs a beating heart... our warehouse team represent that heart.

10 | Big Group Hug Annual Report 2019/20

Big Group Hug is built by the hands of our volunteers, their hearts, their decision to give up their hard-earned yoga/ coffee/work/sleep time so that parents and carers out there can be the best for their little ones. Thank you to our volunteers for their ever-present good humour and sacrifice.

“I first heard about Big Group Hug from a dear friend and also a mum from school that I worked at before retiring 10 years ago. I had been sewing for overseas missions during that time, but I wanted to connect with a local voluntary group... and how wonderful it is to be volunteering now for a few years with Big Group Hug. The atmosphere of love, care and desire to care for families in difficult circumstances is a delight for me personally, and I can see myself sewing new pram covers for preloved prams and strollers, and knitting soft toys for many years to come. I’ve made many new friendships working at the warehouse and just love what BGH does in the community.”

Jill Pope

Volunteer Profile The moment Jill heard about Big Group Hug; she knew she had to get involved. So, she did a bit more research on how she could start her Big Group Hug journey. She said, “I just knew this would fit in with my values and wanted to get involved.” We were lucky enough to have Jill join us on Tuesday evenings in 2018, when Big Group Hug’s headquarters was at on old church hall in Rosanna. A few months later, she also joined us one day a week as she had retired which freed up more time for Jill to volunteer with us. As Big Group Hug outgrew the old church hall and moved to its current location near UniHill in Bundoora, she came to our warehouse more often to help. Not long after, she found herself co-managing the warehouse three days a week. Her passion and drive to help struggling families has made her a valuable asset to our organisation. This was especially apparent in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jill kept the warehouse running with the help of her husband, Calvin, and two other Big Group Hug volunteers during the pandemic. She knew that she could not leave vulnerable families to fend for themselves in such a difficult time. In her own words, “these people needed us and it’s amazing what a small team can do.” She was eager to help in any way possible. Jill was also blown away to see our community work harder than ever to support vulnerable families. She was so overjoyed to see how people were able to donate and source items in the middle of a pandemic. “It’s amazing how creative people can be to stay within their 5km zone and still get essential goods to us,” said Jill. From 5km dropoff chains, doorstep collections and online ordering, it was great to see how the community rallied around to help families in need.

Jill is proud of what Big Group Hug has achieved and is grateful for the friendships she has made during her time volunteering with us. When she isn’t volunteering, she enjoys travelling in her caravan with her husband, Calvin. The pair are planning a nice, well-deserved winter getaway this year.

“I heard about Big Group Hug through my daughter’s work at Whittlesea Community Connections. I’d been thinking about volunteering and this immediately seemed the right fit. I became a donation point and soon was seeing there were gaps in donations, like with toiletries. Then, I found a gap in the area making up toy packs, and that’s my new passion. I love making the toys good again with all their parts working, clean and enticing, so children can have the excitement and happiness of undoing their toy sack and finding great activities.”

Income Tax The company is exempt from income tax under Subdivision 50-B of the Income tax Assessment Act 1997. The Charity is also endorsed and registered as a deductible gift recipient under Subdivision 30-BA of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) Leasehold improvements and office equipment are carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation. The depreciable amount of all PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the Company commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

Impairment of Assets At the end of each reporting period, the Board reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by comparing the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use, to the asset’s carrying amount. Any excess of the asset’s carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income and expenditure statement.

Cash on Hand Cash on hand includes cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

Accounts Receivable and Other Debtors Accounts receivable and other debtors include amounts due from members as well as amounts receivable from donors. ReceivablesFinancial expected to be collected within Statements Big Group Hug Ltd 12 months of the end of the reporting period are classified as current assets. PageAll 13 of 16 other receivables are classified as non-current assets.

Revenue and Other Income Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue. Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established. Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt. If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax.

Leases Leases of PPE, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset (but not the legal ownership) are transferred to the association, are classified as finance leases. Finance leases are capitalised by recording an asset and a liability at the lower of the amounts equal to the fair value of the leased property or the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Lease payments are allocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for that period. Leased assets are depreciated on a straight-line basis over the shorter of their estimated useful lives or the lease term. Lease payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses in the periods in which they are incurred.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Receivablesand payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST receivable or payable. The net amount ofGST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or payables in theassets and liabilities statement.

HOW YOU CAN HELP MAKE A DONATION

SHARE OUR SOCIALS

Do you have new or pre-loved goods such as clothing, blankets, toys, books, cots, or prams that you would like to donate? Does your business have sample stock or excess inventory of products that are suitable for ages newborn to 16-year-old? Big Group Hug can distribute these goods to families requiring support in your community.

The easiest way to support Big Group Hug and to make a difference, is by sharing our social media messages. We pride ourselves on being a responsive organisation and being able to source the things families need quickly. Social media is our primary method of communication. We regularly put out calls for assistance or for specific items to be donated that are needed by families. Our online community help us spread the word, and our social media messages and responses are able to deliver some extraordinary results.

FINANCIAL DONATIONS In addition to donated goods, Big Group Hug needs financial support to ensure that we can cover some of our essential operating costs. Plus, on occasion, we need to bulk purchase new items such as nappies, baby formula, toothbrushes, underwear and socks to name a few, for families requiring support where we can’t source adequate donations or for a very specific request. In addition, if you can make a financial donation to support the operating costs of our volunteer-driven work, the Big Group Hug team will be incredibly grateful!
