Lucky 21

So, we went into 2020 with a vision (no pun intended), bright-eyed and bushytailed, and boy did we get thrown a curve ball. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a life of curve balls thrown at me, and here’s what I’ve come away with, which I believe I’ve expounded on before.

To me, life is a collection and mass accumulation of experiences. And in that sphere, I’m a very wealthy person from the many that I’ve encountered.

Now, when it comes to experiences, there are good ones and bad ones. The good ones are the ones that everyone wants to have, but it’s the bad ones that are often the most important; that’s because it’s the bad ones that we can and need to learn from.

That being said, Covid (and other things) this year has been one hell of a bad experience, and it seems that with the vaccine now on the way (whether you decide to take it or not), at least there’s light at the end of the tunnel. But, what do we do when we get out of the tunnel? Do we go back to the way things were before, and hope for the best next time around? Or do we somehow, somewhere, find the good in all the bad, and come away with something positive?

Most of us can’t do much about the medical and scientific side of things, other than try to stay healthy and strong, but we can do things about the personal and societal side of things. We can change things about ourselves, and in turn, that helps to change what’s around us. We can look at things from the other side, or at the very least, consider a different point of view. We can be more understanding, compassionate, caring, empathetic, giving, supportive... or simply be open to other ideas and accepting to what’s different than what we know, are used to or even prefer.

But you can’t just think about it, you really have to do it. In a sense, it’s similar to a New Year’s resolution, but instead of just saying it and thinking about it, maybe this time around, we really do it, and another year doesn’t go by without change.

I once did a fun and interesting experiment years ago with a small group of people. I challenged everyone to try and go 24 hours without telling a lie, and to keep notes on each and every time they did, no matter how little or insignificant (in their eyes) to how great and terrible. Well, of course, first and foremost, the lesson learned was that it was pretty much impossible to not lie at all. But the other lesson learned, which came from keeping track of the lies during the 24hour period, was that you can certainly lie a lot less, and change your ways, if you are not only determined, but more importantly, aware of it.

So, what does this have to do with the pandemic, experiences, New Year’s resolutions and/or curve balls? Well, first off, I offer you the same fun challenge– try and go 24 hours without lying, and keep track of when you do... and from there, I challenge you to start keeping track of the things that you not only want to change in your life, but are also the things that may be negatively impacting your life and result in keeping you from living the life that you desire. And once you do, you’ll have a clearer picture of how to change or possibly alleviate them altogether, and therefore, turn something that was a negative into a positive, and a bad experience into a good lesson learned, which in itself, provides a better situation for you and the others around you.

How do we make 2021 better? Well, the vaccine will certainly help on a global level, but we, individually, can and need to do the rest.

So, here’s to a better year ahead, a Lucky 21, and may we all hit the jackpots most important to us.
