Urban Living ” is one of the brand-new styles, also known as New Yorker style. Very often, the setting is a large, high-ceilinged, industrial building with raw brick walls. The rawer, the better, if you go all-in. This style is an offshoot of the vintage style and it ’s perfect for a combination with the French country style that we’ve always loved. That ’s the fantastic thing about living in this way: the style has lots of facets and offshoots and you can easily combine whatever you like best from several styles to create your very own style. In this edition, we’re offering you several good examples on how to make this work. If you’re into the original, very authentic French country style, you’ll find plenty of similarities, and you’ve probably already got the rustic furniture and things. Just for a while, the more romantic elements have to give way to the simpler and more rustic interior design but don’t get rid of your beautiful brocante treasures just yet because they ’re great combined with raw walls and rustic furniture. Just take a look at the change created by hanging a beautiful, French chandelier by a raw wall. This time, we’re showing you some ideas on how to make a raw brick wall which you might need if you don’t live in an abandoned industrial building but love raw walls. We’ll show you how to bring it out if you’ve got bricks underneath the wallpaper and also how to paint a look-alike. We’ve also got lots of furniture transformations and we’ll show you lots of wonderful homes full of inspiration. Enjoy!

There’s no doubt that this Dutch home oozes of true castle atmosphere. It ’s been furnished with a hint of past times through an unusual collection of French antiques, combined with modern comfort. Marjan, who lives here, has a very good sense of all things aesthetic. Old chandeliers adorn almost every room. Chandeliers and girandoles were put to use for centuries before electricity was invented. They were used for candles and you can still feel the magic that occurred whenever the prisms 5

were reflected by candlelight. Around 1900, many chandeliers were adapted for electricity so the ones from this transition phase were used for both electricity and candles. Later, they were only equipped with a cable. Obviously, such chandeliers were only for wealthy citizens and the aristocracy. The average man would illuminate his home with a candle in a lamp or a candleholder. The large lanterns on the previous page are garage lanterns that used to hang outside the houses.
