ahrain is a small archipelago (a group of islands) in a central location in the Persian Gulf. It is surrounded by the larger countries Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Only a tiny part of the country can be farmed, even though the weather is so humid (up to 50 degrees Celsius), so all food needs to be shipped in to feed people.

History

Archaeological evidence dating back to the third millennium B.C.E. indicates that the main island was settled by Sumerians. Around 2000 B.C.E. it was known as Dilmun and served as a trading post. In the fourth century C.E. Bahrain was annexed into the Sasanian Empire. In the seventh century, Muslims conquered the area and ruled until the sixteenth century. In 1521, Portugal took control, using Bahrain as a pearling post and military garrison until 1602, when the Persians wrested the country from the Portuguese.

The ruler Ahmad ibn Al Khalifah took control from the Persians in 1783; his descendants of the Al Khalifah family lead the country to this day.

In the 1830’s Britain signed several treaties with Bahrain, offering protection against the Turks in exchange for access to the Persian Gulf. The British built a navel base there. Over time, antiBritish sentiment rose, until Britain pulled out of the region in 1971. In August of that year Bahrain declared independence.

In recent years, the Sunni-led government has struggled to manage relations with its large Shiamajority population. In early 2011, amid Arab uprisings elsewhere in the region, the Bahraini Government confronted similar protests at home with police and military action.

Today, the US Navy's 5th Fleet is based in Bahrain and is a critical foothold for the United States.

Economy Oil has been at he centre of Bahrain’s economy since the 1930’s but the country has turned to petroleum processing and international banking to diversify its economy. Still, as of 2013 oil refining and petroleum production accounted for 73% of the exports.

Pearls and textiles continue to be major exports.

Many tourists visit Bahrain to enjoy the sea and also shop at its many modern western-style malls.

English is the language of business in Bahrain, though it is helpful to know as much Arabic as possible.

People Over half, almost 55% of the people who live in the country are expatriates or workers from other countries.

There is very little violence or crime of any kind in Bahrain.

What is it like to be a woman in Bahrain?

Bahrain is moderate compared to many other gulf states when it comes to the treatment of women. Almost all women receive higher education and around 35% work outside of the home. Having said that, girls are raised and educated separately from boys. In many ways boys have it much easier, and are allowed to indulge themselves in play and imagination while girls are taught to look after household chores as well as studying and working.

A new Constitution was formed in the year 2002 which provided for an elected Parliament and gave the women the right to vote for the first time.

Women in Bahrain do go outside their homes, but usually in the company of men in their families.

Women do not stare or smile at strangers and are discouraged from wearing make-up or nail polish. It is immodest to draw attention to oneself under Islamic faith.

Bahraini men and women socialize and congregate at local cafes and restaurants.

Expatriates mix with Bahraini nationals across all social settings. And people from all over the Gulf come to Bahrain to relax.

Sports Sport is a major cultural pastime in Bahrain, with facilities including driving, golf, horse riding, rugby, tennis, sailing, soccer, cricket and basketball. On land, a oy R there are gyms, horse riding stables and sports clubs, including rugby, e Th tennis, soccer, cricket and basketball. The Royal Golf Club, designed by international champion Colin Montgomerie, is a particular attraction.

In sport, facilities are world-class. Bahrain is home of Formula One in the Gulf, becoming the first Middle Eastern country to host a Grand Prix in 2004, and hosting the season’s opening race in 2010.

The Bahrain government provides free medical care, education, and old-age pensions to its people.

with rice.

• Muchammar: brown, sweet rice served

with sugar or dates.

• Baba ghanoush: smoked aubergine,

pureed garlic, yogurt and sesame paste.

• Shawarma: lamb or chicken carved from

a rotating spit and wrapped in flat bread.

• Sambousa: crisp pastry cases filled with

meat, cheese, sugar or nuts.

Regional drinks: Arak: grape spirit flavoured with aniseed.

Gahwa: coffee, usually spiked with cardamom.

Art & Culture There are many places to visit that offer archeological interest including The Khamis Mosque, which dates back to the 12th century.

Bahrain has a thriving modern arts and culture scene including modern art, poetry, literature, theatre and music.

girl in the world Haya Rashed Al Khalifa Law: Haya obtained a law degree from the University of Kuwait in 1974, followed by a diploma in Civil Rights Private Law from the University of Alexandria in Egypt in 1986 and a diploma in Comparative Law from Ain Shams University in Egypt in 1988.

Admitted to the Bar in 1979 she opened a private practice as the founder of Haya Rashed Al Khalifa Law Firm. From 1997 – 1999 she was the vice chairwoman of the International Bar Association. She is currently the legal advisor to Bahrain’s royal court and a Global Advisor to Orphans International.

Diplomacy: Haya was the third woman to be President of the United Nations General Assembly, where she oversaw the 61st session between September 2006 and September 2007.

She was the first female Muslim president.

She was appointed as Ambassador to France from 1999 to 2004. When she was appointed Ambassador to France she became the first female Bahraini ambassador. She also served as a permanent delegate to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Sheikha Haya is fluent in Arabic, French and English.

Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa was born into the ruling family in Bahrain (Bahrain is a Constitutional Monarchy) in 1952 and became, along with Lulwa Al Awadhi, one of the first two female lawyers in Bahrain.
