It’s good to start The first contacts with the university may cause some confusion after all, this is a new place, different from a typical school. Surely you have many questions: where to do the necessary formalities? What is important to remember? Where to find help? Here’s a handful of tips on how to navigate the university.

Virtual

University

– this is probably the most important internet site for every UITM student. It is through VU that you check your schedule, grades (you do not have to worry about index entries), financial issues and syllabuses. All you need to do is enter the letter “w” and then the album number. For the 12345 album number, the login will be w12345. The default password for the account is the owner’s PESEL number.

Electronic Identity Card – The card entitles not only to numerous discounts, eg for tickets, but also allows you to use the University computers and information kiosks (where you can check your account at the Virtual University). Just insert the card into the reader, the system will automatically recognize the user, and then enter the password (by default, it is the owner’s PESEL number).

8

At the Virtual University you can check all the basic information about payments: sub-account numbers, amount of receivables.

Library – to borrow books in the library or to use them in the reading room, you must order them through a catalog on the internet. Logging into the system takes place in the same way as for the Virtual University (see above). By default, you can borrow up to 10 books, although the limit can be increased in various ways. Through the online system you can also extend the date of borrowing the book by another month. Where: Room No. 21 (Rzeszów) Room No. KM23 (Kielnarowa)

How to read your schedule? On Virtual University you can see hours and places of classes. The latter are saved using symbols. How to understand them? RA - this symbol means the main building of the university at ul. Sucharskiego 2. RB - part of the classes in Rzeszów takes place in the Academic High School General education. His building is located next to the main office of UITM, at ul. Rudnickiego 2. KA, KM - this is how rooms are marked located on the UITM campus in Kielnarowa.

Academic Environment - what, how and when?

Organization of the academic year at the University of Information Technologyand Management is different from the one found at most universities. We explain the basic issues and differences.

9

Classes at UITM are available in several forms, the most common of which are:

Lecture - the form of classes that is most associated with the university. During lectures, students learn the most important theoretical issues of the issues discussed. It is worth going to them - it is the content of the exams that you later take!

Recitation - during these classes you will interact with the teacher, perform tasks, and take part in discussions. Projects are a specific form of education in which students must demonstrate their creativity, commitment, and knowledge. Most often, a practical task gets to be developed: creating a media plan for an advertising campaign, making computer graphics, describing a given issue, inventing a production process, etc. Laboratories - these are classes most often similar to recitation, but are held rather in smaller groups and appropriate rooms - just in laboratories. Do not be fooled by the first impression: it is not necessarily a room filled with medical devices or chemicals, because it is a broader concept. Most students simply use computer labs.

10

The division of hours can be found at the Virtual University - there you will also see when they start and end.

Credits are held on the last classes in a given subject. This means that you can have your first exams even at the end of November, and the last ones in February. Thanks to this you will not be forced to trudge through a two-week session marathon, because the session is spread over a longer period of time.

Scholarship for foreigners For whom? For foreign students, regardless of the field, year, study mode. What do I have to do to get it? Get a grade point average of at least 4.0 (one exam during the second term is acceptable). When to apply? Until 30 September - in the case of a scholarship for the winter semester and until 28 February - in the case of a scholarship for the summer semester.

11

Modern infrastructure

In UITM, in addition to the possibility of meeting inspiring people who will give you knowledge and experience, you will have access to modern tools thanks to which gaining this knowledge will be a pleasure.

During the studies, part of the classes will take place in our modern Campus in Kielnarowa. UITM organizes free transport for its students. A bus route that runs several dozen times a day on the Rzeszรณw - Kielnarowa route. You can also use the municipal city line 44 (timetable at www.mpk.rzeszow.pl) or get there by car and park in one of several parking lots on the campus.

As a UITM student you will benefit from well-equipped research laboratories, among others: a laboratory for advanced network technologies and wireless technologies, a financial laboratory or forensics laboratory. You can pursue your passions in a professional television, radio and photo studio - regardless of the field of study. Assemble your first movie, hear your own voice on the air or work on a photography workshop. This is experience and fun all in one!

Foreign opportunities

The University of Information Technology and Management focuses on the development of its students, which is why it offers more and more opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills from year to year. For ambitious and hungry new challenges, we have prepared programs that allow studying abroad. Foreign studies allow us to improve language skills, learn about new cultures and are a strong point in a CV. The University of Information Technology and Management make sure that its students have the best opportunities to study abroad. International Relations Department UITM from the beginning focuses on acquiring important foreign partners, so as to provide students with a whole range of learning opportunities abroad. In connection with this, a special department was established - the International Relations Department, which maintains already established international contacts and tries to establish many new ones, also coordinating the Erasmus+ project. This department is located in the main university building at ul. Sucharskiego 2, in room RA 207. In addition, it also recruits students from abroad, cooperates with universities and other foreign organizations in the field of exchange of scientific and didactic experiences, and organizes and coordinates exchange programs for students and employees of the University and other domestic partners with foreign institutions.

14

The International Relations Department also provides help, advice and consultation to all students who would like to obtain information about education at universities abroad.

“Erasmus+ apprenticeships” “Erasmus+ changes life, opens minds” Program The program was launched in 2014 as a combination of previously existing initiatives, including the Lifelong Learning program, and is intended, among others, for students who want to take up apprenticeships and study in interesting places in Europe. The aim of the Erasmus+ project at UITM is to increase students’ activity in gaining work experience and to encourage mobility and take up new challenges beyond the borders of one country. UITM students can use two types of trips for studies or for internships. On this trip, you can improve your language skills, get to know new cultures, make many friends; for the period of one semester students have the opportunity to try independent living in a foreign environment. In the case of foreign internships, a student or graduate has the opportunity to try his hand at a

much more demanding, competitive, international labor market. Students can count on support from the university in the form of: a scholarship for foreign studies, a total exemption from tuition fees at a partner university, passing a period of study at a partner university, the possibility of applying for a UITM scholarship upon returning from a partner university or even up to 75% discount from UITM fees for departure time (for trips to college)! What do you need to do to participate in this program? Candidate who applies for a foreign trip must have: UITM student status, average grade of at least 3.60, good knowledge of a foreign language in which he or she intends to study (knowledge of a foreign language will be verified on the basis of an internal language examination). When the student meets all these conditions, he can confidently report his candidacy to the project. To this end, he/she must provide: an application form, CV in a foreign language, a cover letter in a foreign language and a certificate of grade-point average for the previous semester. Two stages of recruitment await qualified students. The first stage is the selection of candidates who obtained the average grade from the internal language exam at

15

the level of min. 3.50 (3.00 if traveling abroad). The second one consists in counting the points obtained during recruitment according to established criteria, and then the final ranking list is decreasing. When the student passes positively through both stages, he is awaited by a special trip, which will surely result in a lot of positive and interesting memories. Recruitment for study visits in the academic year 2019/2020 and trips for the implementation of practices in spring / summer 2019 will start on 02/11/2018. Do not miss the information meetings that will take place in October and November 2019!

Double Degree It is a program offering one-year studies in the UK. In the last academic year students had to choose between as many as 10 universities. Using this program, the student receives two

16

diplomas - one Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at UITM and the other confirming his / her acquisition of a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a chosen foreign university. One study, two diplomas. The offer is addressed to all students who: firstly want to develop their skills, secondly: their English is at level B2 or higher, and thirdly they are at the 2nd year of first-cycle or first-level 2 (full-time or parttime). A person, going on a full year of study to England, implements a selected, similar to the studied course of study of UITM. It is necessary to have permission from the Dean for departure. Students so far have been able to apply to the following universities in the UK: Birmingham City University, Coventry University, Derby University, Huddersfield University, University of Abartey Dundee, University of Central Lancashire, University of Wales Trinity Saint

David, University of Ulster (London and Birmingham Campuses) ), London School of Business and Management, Northumbria University (+ London campus) and Amity University.

Students who want to study abroad can also receive financial assistance. The applicant can count on support in the form of up to ÂŁ 9,000 (about PLN 50,000) in the UK government loan to cover school fees, a 50% reduction in tuition fees at UITM, and the care of a British Oak Recruitment representative.

- Staying in Derby was a kind of school with life for me. The Double Degree program is distinguished by the fact that the student organizes his / her stay in a given country, in a city where the chosen university is located - said Anna Sarzyniak for the portal UITM that used the program. - You must first of all take care of the accommodation, bank account or National Insurance Number that is required to start working in the UK. I worked part-time, and payments basically covered most of the expenses associated with staying in Derby. It was therefore an invaluable lesson of independence. In my opinion, participation in such programs significantly increases the chances on the labor market - added A. Sarzyniak

Exchange with universities from China UITM as the first university in the region and one of the first in Poland introduced to the Philology offer a translation specialty with Chinese. This is a precursory initiative of UITM in PolishChinese cooperation. The patronage over the specialty was taken by Ashan Normal University in China, so that students from the aforementioned specialty can go on a semester course of Chinese language and Chinese culture, run in a professional Center for Chinese Language Teaching for Foreign Students at Anshan Normal University. The course lasts 5 months. The first student trip took place in the academic year 2014/2015. In the winter semester of 2018/2019, 8 UITM students will stay at the ANU. As part of the exchange program with universities from China, also Chinese students are studying at the UITM within a semester or annual exchange. In the winter semester of 2018/2019, 9 students come from China for one-year courses in the fields of Philology, Computer Science and International Management.

The ongoing globalization as well as political and economic changes in the world contribute to the increasing educational migration of young people from around the world. Many of them come to Poland from the East - from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Here in Poland, the market of colleges and universities is huge, and a large part of them is near the eastern border. One of them - open to foreigners - is the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów, which ranks second in Poland in terms of the number of students coming from abroad. This is also an opportunity for Poles who can learn about other cultures, make friends that can result in joint initiatives and ideas in the future. In today’s world, international cooperation is highly valued, and UITM is the perfect place to take the first step towards such activity.

I can say from my own experience that UITM is a university of dreams for students from outside Poland. At the very beginning, remember that you are an international now. You have stood on a road where you will probably encounter many misunderstandings, puzzles, questions and even problems. You need to be aware of it, prepare yourself, and even better to know what, how and where to do or ... what not to do. In case of problems, doubts and moments of weakness, you have two places where you will always find support: Adaptation clinic at the Institute for Research on Civilizations (ht tp://w w w.c y wilizacje.pl/ar ticle_ adaptation_clinic_) Adaptation of Students from the East, contact: sslusarczuk@wsiz.rzeszow.pl

Tip 1 - learn and improve your language WSIiZ is a university very open to students from abroad. You do not have to take exams to get to it, you do not need to know the language perfectly, even the recruitment process can be done online. This, however, does not mean full play during your studies. The Polish language is the most difficult and the most common problem. The university is trying to help from the very first days - before the first semester begins there are language courses, then obligatory free classes during the first year of studies. Regularly attend exercises, get involved in them, do homeworks, read Polish books in your free time and do not be afraid to talk in Polish.

Tip 2 - do not close in the environment of your countrymen - I lived with Ukrainians, there were almost only Ukrainians in the group, we also only played in the group of Ukrainians, even on the Internet every day I visited only Ukrainian websites. After some time I realized: all the time my countrymen surround me says Oleg. - In such an environment you feel more calm, you do not feel sudden changes, culture shock, but on the other hand I did not learn a language, I did not learn another culture. I started to make friends with Poles and now I have many friends from Poland. Even my girlfriend is Polish - adds the UITM student.

At this university, you can find friends not only from Poland, but from around the world, which will give you the opportunity to try your English (and not only) in practice, as well as meet new people and their culture.

Tip 3 - Do not spoil the image of your country Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates the opportunity they have received. Sometimes the words of disappointment can be heard from lecturers - for lack of commitment, honest work and the will to develop. This attitude is not only harmful to you, but also affects how your country and countrymen are perceived! Be proud of your nationality, show it’s rich culture and become an ambassador of your own country!

Tip 4 - Remember that you have a chance for success If you want something and work hard - you will definitely achieve it. You are not from Poland, but it does not mean that you have fewer opportunities or opportunities. Even in difficult times, do not be afraid, do not complain, do not close yourself. Be optimistic, believe in yourself, think about how to solve the problem. Student life also means tempering the spirit, unique experiences, building personality, shaping habits and features that will be useful to you in the future.

The wealth of many cultures

At UITM you can find representatives of many cultures. The Institute for Research on Civilizations organizes events for them in which they can get to know Poland, as well as present their own culture. What is worth paying attention to?

Days of Culture - you no longer have to travel abroad to learn about the culture of other countries. UITM is an international environment that gives the opportunity to meet representatives of other nations while remaining within the university. The best opportunity for this is Culture Days, as part of which the traditions and customs of various countries are presented: whether Ukraine, Kazakhstan or Malaysia!

Christmas Eve in Polish - also foreigners have a chance to learn more about Poland and its culture, not only by staying in our own country. 20

In the end, Christmas Eve is a very important moment for Poles, which is why we bring to the guests from abroad the traditions, dishes and customs associated with it.

Easter in an international group - it is a great opportunity to integrate in a new environment. A meeting with delicious food set on a table allows you to not only to try different dishes, but also to make many new, fascinating acquaintances!

UITM is very entertaining! Student life is rightly associated not only with education and exams, but also with entertainment, parties, concerts and many other attractions. The academic environment is a field of creative development, not only scientific but also sport and artistic. You can be both a participant and a viewer, playing equally well.
