Employees of Evergreen, the residents, and community members gathered at the Drew House Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the renovations that had been done to the house over the past three years.

Judith Barrett decided to get involved in renovations of the house once she drove by the property after returning to Minden due to her parents passing. “As I drove by the house, I thought, hmm, that place

needs pressure cleaning. Then my second thought was, hmm, I wonder what’s been done to the house. I ended up getting Cathey’s name and she returned the phone call to me and we started a dialogue that made me feel like it was a good opportunity to come forward and offer some assistance to make sure this house was in good standing,” said Barrett.

A Heflin man was arrested earlier this week after an argument between a female victim and the man resulted in him being charged with domestic abuse battery with child endangerment.

Cameron Romain, 23, was found sleeping in his bedroom by local authorities after re- ROMAIN turning with his mother from the bar. Beforehand, an argument netween Romain and the victim broke out and resulted in Cameron brutalizing the victim and endangering their threeweek-old baby.

Deputies were dispatched to a residence in reference to a domestic disturbance. The deputies, “made contact with a female subject carrying a threeweek-old baby boy. The female victim was crying and seemed terrified. I immediately noticed several injuries to her face,” the arrest report read.

The victim sustained contusions around her forehead and left eye. To report also noted she had significant red marks around her neck as well as swelling and a contusion on the back of her head.

The victim told the deputy that, “her live-in boyfriend for one year, Cameron Romain, came home tonight after going to a bar and drinking with his mom. Cameron’s mom was highly intoxicated and the victim tried to help Cameron and the mom into bed,” the report read.

During this time the victim and Romain got into an argument about his mother. This led

The Drew House is a little different than any other services that we have in all of the eight states. Most of them are community homes. This home works as a boarding house. So most people here pay only pay rent. It’s the only thing like this in all of Evergreen, but without that, they wouldn’t have a place to stay,” said Cathey Crow.

One of the longest residents to have resided there, Art Campbell, moved into the Drew

House on July 21, 1986, and he took the time to share his thoughts on the recent updates that had taken place.

“To tell you the truth, I’ve lived here and I’ve liked it for the most part.

They put these wooden floors down. They did that floor in the living room in August of 2018 and early this year they painted the cabinets.” While he said that the new wooden floors were nice, he noted that he much preferred carpet.

During the celebration, Barrett made it a point to share a bit of the history behind the Drew House, given that it was a place

that she remembered growing up.

“This is the house that Drew and his wife lived in their entire married life.

My mother was their only child, so of course, I came along as the only grandchild. This is the house that I played in when I was young, and have wonderful memories of being under the staircase with my dolls,” said Barrett.

“My mother was a devout volunteer. She received the volunteer of the year award here in Minden when she was 35 years old. She also became more involved in Evergreen as it became an organization. In 1985

it was time for my grandmother to leave this home. She and my mother made the decision to donate the house to Evergreen. It just seemed like the right thing to do, because it was so close to town, it was a short walk for people to get downtown, whether they had a job or just to visit people in the community.”

And since not long after that, the property has been in the hands of Evergreen, however, when Barrett passed the property, she felt inclined to offer help for renovations.

“Once on the couch, Cameron commenced to hitting her on the back of her head and back. The victim tried to defend herself by kicking at Cameron. Cameron responded by hitting the victim on the side of the head.

The victim realized she couldn’t defend herself and gave up,” the report read.

Afterward, the victim retreated to the back bedroom where their three-week-old son was sleeping. “Cameron busted through the bedroom door and tried picking

up their son. Due to Cameron’s irate state, the victim pleaded with Cameron not to pick him up. Cameron progressed to punching the victim in the left eye. Cameron continued his rant and kicked the bedroom door several times, causing significant damage. Cameron also grabbed the victim around the throat and told her he would kill her,” the report read.

Romain eventually went to the other bedroom, at which point the victim sent texts to family members who contacted the police.

Cameron was located asleep by deputies in the other bedroom when they arrived on the scene. Romain was arrested, Mirandized, and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.

Bobby Joe was born February 20, 1961 in Minden, Louisiana and moved to Texas when he was 8 years old. He lived in Baytown, Texas for 48 years. He was a YN2 & Search and Rescue Swimmer in the US Navy aboard the USS Austin (LPD-4) from 1983-1988. He worked for Occidental Chemical for 30 years before retiring in 2017 to move back to Minden. He was a member of the Minden Civitans. He had a deep faith in Jesus Christ and loved his church, Lakeview United Methodist Church. Bobby was an avid golfer. He was

Louisiana House GOP urged to pick leader without Democrats BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Two top Louisiana Republicans are urging GOP state House members to pick their next speaker without input from Democrats.

U.S. Sen. John Kennedy and Attorney General Jeff Landry sent Republican House members a letter suggesting that Democrats shouldn’t have a say in the majority-GOP House’s top leadership job for the new four-year term that begins in January.

Kennedy and Landry oversee a PAC that helped elect several members of the state House.

“The people of Louisiana have spoken. With their votes for senators and representatives, they have sent a clear message on conservative representation. Honoring those votes by ensuring we have a conservative speaker backed by the majority of our majority party in the state House is extremely important,” Kennedy and Landry wrote in the letter sent Monday.

The U.S. senator and attorney general are the top two figures in Louisiana’s Republican Party. They co-chair the Louisiana Committee for a Conservative Majority, a political action committee that raised money to support conservative GOP candidates. The PAC helped Republicans gain a supermajority in the state Senate for the upcoming term and increase its majority in the House to 68 of 105 members.

Kennedy and Landry said they don’t have a preference for which GOP lawmaker becomes House speaker when the vote is held Jan. 13. Several Republicans are vying for the job, with Reps. Sherman Mack of Albany and Clay Schexnayder of Gonzales considered the top two contenders in the behind-the-scenes jockeying for the position.

Landry said they didn’t write to Senate Republicans because it appeared GOP Sen. Page Cortez of Lafayette has locked up the needed votes to win the presidency in the 39-member chamber.

Sen. Rick Ward, a West Baton Rouge Parish Republican who was running for Senate president, agreed that Cortez appeared to have the votes to claim the seat — though Ward cautioned that Cortez needed to keep 20 votes together for another month. That’s a delicate balance when trying to determine committee chairmanships and other leadership positions.

Landry said he and Kennedy reached out to the House Republicans because the leadership selection process seemed further behind, and more fractured.

“I was hearing that there were a number of Republicans who just said, ‘If we don’t have our way, we’re going to negotiate with the Democrats,’” Landry said in a phone interview Tuesday. “If you’re going to run as a Republican, if you’re going to get up on the ballot and wear the party label, you have to be able to act like a Republican.”

The House Republican delegation meets Friday in Baton Rouge, with the speaker’s race expected to be among the top discussions.

Negotiations with the 37 Democratic and independent members could assist a speaker candidate to reach the majority needed to win the top

job. Talks across the aisle often have helped determine legislative leadership in prior terms.

But Kennedy and Landry called on Republican lawmakers to attend the Friday gathering, choose among themselves “and come up with a consensus candidate we all may rally behind to advance a conservative agenda.”

“Whatever member is able to gather the majority of Republican votes, should be unanimously nominated and supported by our 68 members,” the two GOP leaders wrote.

Louisiana governors traditionally have had a heavy hand in helping select the House speaker and Senate president.

But that changed four years ago with the election of Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards when House Republicans bucked his push for a Democratic speaker and selected their own candidate instead. Edwards, who won a second term in the fall elections, again has largely been sidelined in the legislative leadership process ahead of the upcoming term.

The governor said he’s asking individual members to “not have obstructionism masquerading as independence.”

As we go through the Christmas holidays, I love to look back and see how blessed I really am. We all go through things in life and it is hard at times.

However, you don’t have a tough life, you have tough days. It is all how you look at it.

Walking my health journey and becoming a coach TINA has taught me so SPECHT much. I have learned that I am more than enough. I am a somebody. I choose my own path and no one else. In all reality, if your life stinks it is because of you. Only you can change what you don’t like.

I used to be afraid to do a lot of things because of what people would say. Even worse was that people said I couldn’t accomplish something. Why was I listening to someone else’s opinion? Why do I even care?

I believe that what you do in life is between you and God. If you are striving to be your best self then that is all that should matter.

I feel many people have not embraced their calling or did what they love because someone else in their life “knew what was best for them.” What?

I am still in awe that there are so many people that have

a lot of opinions about what others should do but yet they don’t have their own life together.

People, focus on your own self. Stay in your own lane and do what is good for you.

If what someone else is doing is not going against God’s word, or hurting anyone, let them be.

There will be a lot less stress in life if people wouldn’t have an opinion about everyone else.

Not succeeding at something in life is not failure. It is a learning tool, and we should never stop learning.

We all should be living above the line and not below. What does that mean? Living above the line means you stay in your own lane. You strive to make yourself better every day. You help others where help is needed. You stay positive in all situations.

There will be days where you need do-over or you just want to quit. Life is a challenge. I say, stand strong and take that challenge head-on.

Another thing is you also become like the five people you hang around. Think about that!

You may have to change your circle of influence.

Webster Association of Retired Teachers Received Award of Honor Special to the Minden Press-Herald

The Webster Association of Retired Teachers received the Silver Unit Excellence Award presented by the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association.

The award was given in recognition of outstanding program achievement for the years 2018-2019.

It was awarded on Oct. 22

by President of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association Nancy Ouigley and Executive Director Rodney R. Watson.

This award was granted very much in keeping with our mission state-

ment: To help America fulfill its global educational goals and objectives for the twenty-first century and beyond by continuing our efforts to build and maintain quality student, teacher, and parent relationships.

The organization meets each second Thursday of the month during the local school year. We welcome all retired teachers as well as other retired persons of the education arena to come and join with us as we work to fulfill our mission.

So take some time out and look back over your life. I know some are having a rough time but stop and think about all the good times and concentrate on them. Then make today the day you are going to change things! You only have one life. It’s all up to you. Let’s make it a great one.

Crab Stuffed Mushroom Recipe Crab Stuffed Mushrooms are rich, cheesy, and insanely addictive. You’ll want to eat the filling all by itself but it’s even BETTER when it’s hot and bubbly!

Ingredients 4 ounces cream cheese softened ½ cup sour cream 1 small clove garlic minced 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 ounces imitation crab meat finely chopped 2 scallions green parts only, sliced ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 pound baby Portobello or white button mushrooms stems removed Instructions Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup.

In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, garlic, and Italian seasoning.

Taste and add salt and pepper if desired. Stir in crab meat, scallions, and mozzarella cheese.

Divide filling evenly among mushroom caps. Place on the baking sheet 1 inch apart.

Bake 20 to 30 minutes or until filling is hot and bubbly.

Our Best Behavior

Christmases of Long Ago When I was a kid (mid1940’s), Christmas was quite different than now. Gifts might be rag dolls and mittens for my sisters, a few marbles or a pair of socks for the boys, a handful of hard candy with an apple, orange, banana and a few nuts – all crowded into a shoebox saved since September. If there was a Christmas tree, it was a sickly pine stuck over in a corner with popcorn garlands, sweet gum balls covered with foil (chewinggum wrappers). and homemade or- Bill Crider naments made at school from various things. No lights, fancy ornaments or angels to top the tree! Just a simple tree it was. Like Charlie Brown’s tree!

Most gifts were homemade or ‘made in China and bought at the “5 and 10 store.” One of our prized possessions now is a bird figurine my mother gave us our first Christmas.

It still had the price tag on it - $1.00. We displayed it for several years until it became chipped. Then Sondra spray-painted it chalk-white and it fits perfectly among our special decorations.

The first year we were mar-

ried, we cut a cedar tree on a fence-row that surrounded an old cemetery. (We got permission!) We covered it with blue lights and strung Spanish moss from Lake Bistineau from top to bottom. That served as our icicles. How pretty it was until Charlie the cat decided to redecorate the house one day we were in school. What a surprise when we got home! What a special memory!

Growing up on a farm, way out of town, Christmas was very simple.

What happened at school was always so very exciting – coloring pictures and decorating the rooms, pulling names and exchanging gifts, and giving special gifts to the teachers.

Poor teachers: having to settle for a box of ‘nothings’! My most disappointing gift was a pair of socks (7th Grade) and it was from my teacher’s daughter! I thought it should have been a much better gift (a box of chocolates, a pocket knife, or an ink pen). Mama told me that “Mrs. Loftin knew just what I needed”. But I was not interested in what I needed; I wanted what I wanted! Disappointment for sure! In retrospect, Mama and the teacher were right!

Christmas Eve was always a magic night, we thought!

We never could understand how Santa could manage to squeeze down our little chimney with enough goodies for seven children and then sort them out, filling shoeboxes with dried raisins, a few nuts, several pieces of hard candy, an apple, orange, and banana. And he got the gifts in the right box too! Then, he managed to ‘getaway’ before any of us could see him in the sky or hear the reindeer tapping on the tin roof. I still have two of my early childhood toys (he brought me): a yellow plastic dachshund; just pull his tail out and release it, he would race across the floor. The other one is a handheld collapsing black cat puppet, controlled by strings being pulled to make it stand, kneel or collapse.

Both are about 60-65 years old and still work.

Remember those delicious popcorn balls, the tastysticky taffy, and pralines that never turned outright? There always were cakes and pies to last throughout the holidays.

A favorite was the fruitcakes, made before Thanksgiving, then wrapped in a towel and stored away until they ‘ripened’. My favorite was mincemeat pie. (Still is). Other pies included pecan, sweet potato, and buttermilk. You know, I never saw a cooked turkey

Yes, customs and routines concerning Christmas have changed. Gift cards have replaced ‘shopping for the right gift,’ cash is preferred over homemade ties or knitted gloves. Everyone has an electronic hand on something.

But when it all boils down to the basics, the Christmas story in Luke 2 is still the same.

The Christ-child was born in Bethlehem, in a cattle stall; and grew to become the Savior of the world. A Redeemer we can invite into our lives to make life on earth more meaningful and our life beyond this one- an eternal one.

So, as we approach Christmas, let’s put Jesus right in the middle of it. This Holy Light entered the world in Bethlehem as a babe; God’s gift to the world! That’s why we can joyfully sing, ‘Joy to the World, the Lord has come.’

Airline got the better of the Tide on Tuesday night in Bossier City with a 57-47 win.

Minden scored just five

points in the second quarter and six in the third before exploding for 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Through three quarters prior, Minden had scored just 20 total points.

Curtis Carter led Minden with 22 points (15 in the fourth).

D’Marqueus Gill had 16 points. Just three other players scored.

DALLAS – For the sixth consecutive year, Louisiana Tech claimed a Conference USA Football specialty award, as senior quarterback J’Mar Smith was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Year, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

Smith posted a career year under center, throwing for 2,814 yards along with 17 touchdowns and just four interceptions. The first-team all-conference selection completed 65.8 percent of his passes (223-for-339) and led the league in passing

yards per game (281.4).

Smith captained an offense that ranked in the upper echelon of the league in scoring (2nd, 34.0 PPG), total offense (1st, 445.2 YPG), passing offense (4th, 277.2 YPG), third-down conversions (1st, 41.8%), first downs (2nd, 23.8 per game) and red-zone offense (4th, 89.4%).

Among active FBS quarterbacks, Smith ranks 8th in career passing yards with 9,360. That number is third most in the Tech record books trailing only Luke McCown (12,994) and Tim Rat-

tay (12,746).

Smith has thrown 50 touchdown passes in his career - fourth most in school history. His 746 career completions and 11 300-yard games are both third most in Tech’s football history.

The Meridian, Mississippi, native helped lead Tech to a 24-13 record as its starting quarterback over the past four seasons. He finished the 2019 regular season with a PFF passing grade of 86.0 – best in C-USA and 15th-best in the nation. He also added 337 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

All C-USA postseason football awards are chosen by a vote from the league’s 14 head football coaches.

The Bulldogs will head to Shreveport to play ACC-foe Miami in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl on Dec. 26 at Independence Stadium at 3:00 p.m.

Glenbrook sweeps Central, Lady Tiders stopped just short at Airline

All four teams, both boys and girls varsity and junior varsity, picked up wins over Central.

JV boys won 45-6 and the junior varsity girls won 41-8 .

In the girls varsity game, the Lady Apaches dominated and finished with a 58-22 win.

The Lady Apaches were led by Reese Hanson, who scored 13 points on the night and Alyssa Martin also scored in double-figures with ten points.

The boys varsity game was a bit closer, but the Apaches took the 55-45 win led

by Peyton Wells’ 19 points. Bryce Swain had 14 and DJ Carter had 13 for Glenbrook.

Airline 41 Minden 39 The Lady Tiders had their chances at the end of the game to tie or take the lead, but turnovers and missed layups gave Airline a cushion at the end.

Doyline 80 Choudrant 44 The Panthers continued their early-season dominance with a big win over Choudrant powered by Jordan Fuller and Decari Markray, who combined for forty points in the win.

Doyline will play host to the Bistineau Classic this week at Doyline.

The proposed activities have a maximum possible individual grant award of $65,000.

FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT The State of

Louisiana Office of Community Development/ Disaster Recovery Unit has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment. Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required.
