2018 VOTE
More than 307,000 in La. cast early ballots

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — More than 307,000 Louisiana residents voted in advance of next week’s election, exceeding the state’s early voting turnout for all but presidential election years,
according to state data released Wednesday. About 10 percent of Louisiana’s nearly 3 million voters cast ballots in the week-long early voting period that ended Tuesday, in races for secretary of state, six U.S. House seats and other positions. Despite the large number
of early voters, the secretary of state’s office predicts turnout only will reach 30 to 35 percent on Election Day. “This year’s early voting numbers are higher than recent midterm elections. We believe this is due to chronic voters choosing to vote early, instead of on Election Day,”
agency spokesman Tyler Brey said in a statement. By comparison, 245,000 people voted early in the 2014 primary, which featured a hotly contested U.S. Senate race and 235,000 people voted early in the attention-grabbing 2015 gubernatorial primary. The
2012 presidential election drew nearly 357,000 early voters in Louisiana, and the 2016 competition between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton saw 531,000 people casting ballots early. Pollster John Couvillon, of JMC Analytics, said this year’s early voting figure was
impressive since the only statewide ballot competition is the special election for secretary of state and Louisiana’s six incumbent congressmen appear safe in their re-election bids. In analysis posted to his website, Cou-

Minden Fire Dept. addresses heater safety
Main to Main begins Friday
n Temperature drop poses risks to some JULIUNA ANDERSON janderson@press-herald.com
As we go into Fall, some people will be turning on the heat in their homes. There are some safety tips to keep in mind as the temperatures begin to drop. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates 25,000 residential fires and 300 deaths every year are caused by space heaters. “Space heaters do not need to have anything in front of them. It doesn’t need to be by any curtains or furniture. It needs to be in an open area.” Fireman Tyler Mandino said. Space heaters should not be plugged into an overloaded socket, which can also cause fires. Furnaces can often cause concern at the beginning of the season, however Tyler says they usually aren’t a cause for concern. “When they turn them on the first time it’s going to stink really bad. A lot of people will call us on that and think it’s burning. But pay attention anyway so it doesn’t catch on fire, of course.” Tyler Advised “The furnaces most likely, will have a lot of dust build up that can cause a lot of issues if it’s not serviced by a service technician.” Captain Wesley Mandino said. Both firemen advise everyone with a fireplace to get them cleaned each year before use. “Make sure your fireplace has been cleaned or you may have an issue where any build up can cause a crack
