Because Chelsea’s class is for children and adolescents, the moods of the children, levels of yoga experience, and overall vibes of the day will steer the routine of the class. Some classes may practice a more gentle flow, while others might bring out some high energy! Chelsea will aim to get to know each student prior to teaching (if she doesn't know them already!) and all levels are absolutely welcome. Chelsea’s practice typically includes teaching of poses, meditation, and breath practice with a touch of Pilates, Dance and Art! Students will also learn some of the origins of yoga, and become familiar with some Sanskrit terms to name different components of practice (poses, breathwork, etc.) For safety and comfort, she offers modifications and varieties of poses and will typically include themes and imagery to enhance the connection between mind, body and breath!

Chelsea has been a PHS teacher for the past 6 years and has now added a new role to her life as a Kids Yoga Teacher!

In October of 2022, Chelsea completed her 200 hour Yoga Teacher Certification, and her SocialEmotional Learning (SEL) Facilitator Certificate from Breathe for Change. While working in Kindergarten at PHS, she has also been teaching Kids Yoga at Casa Om, a studio in Pacifica. Chelsea’s mission is to incorporate Yoga and SEL into the lives of children as a lifelong tool of emotional, physical, and mindful wellness. Chelsea has practiced the magic of Yoga and Pilates for the past 12 years, and intertwines Yoga into her elementary school curriculum as much as possible. Movement has always been a major component in Chelsea’s life, and Yoga has helped incorporate the important and necessary understanding of breath. Using these built skills from her past experiences, Chelsea plans to benefit the PHS community wholeheartedly with the power and access of Yoga for children and adolescents. She has had first hand experience of the difference that Yoga can make for a child inside and outside of a classroom and is beyond excited to have her own official Kid’s Yoga Class at her second home of PHS!

Explore the world of your favorite animated character as you go on an adventure with them in your fantasy world through storyboards and narratives. Design and discover their universe, take us on a unique adventurous journey through comics, flipbooks, zoetropes and basic animation skills. Make your first mini comic series, your first gag cartoon strips, web comics and more!

Comic and basic animation classes will focus on engaging each students' creativity individually but also emphasizing on activities that are done collaboratively as a class. Each session will be an hour. The session will open up with a 5-10 minute ice-breaker activity, where students are required to draw still forms from their surroundings with dialogues or character expressions, this allows the class to know how their fellow students are doing and how to be supportive towards their peer group. This activity also sets pace for the main topic of the session, which lasts for 20-30 minutes. The main themes in this class range from understanding and drawing basic comic elements, to character design and personalities, character facial expressions, gestures, the use of emanata lines, sound effects, dialogues and thought bubbles, self-made flip books, basics of animation, to web publishing formats for comics online (The themes are appropriated to class age and size). The last 5-10 minutes of the class are for questions that students may have or an overall class critique on the work done by the students. The critiquing is always constructive, to make the students realize their own potential as artists and storytellers.

Company Information

Inspired by her experiences around the streets of San Francisco and in the alternative culture scene, Christy now uses her animation skills to make caricatural drawings and illustrations that explore both the peculiarity and allure of people. Working in a variety of mediums, from ink and watercolor to digital, she utilizes a jagged gothic aesthetic informed by classic claymation films and contemporary animated shows. She specializes in character design and single-panel comics.

Shuchi Mishra is the Comics and Basic Animation founder and owner. She graduated with a MFA in Comics from California College of the Arts in 2019. Since then she has been teaching comic and basic animation workshops at various schools in the Bay Area. Her curriculum focuses on visual storytelling, personal expression and exploration through images and words. She loves teaching comics and basic animation tools and techniques to kids as she feels that it broadens her students' imagination, improves their language and learning skills and deepens their understanding of complex subject matters such as diversity, culture, science, history, mathematics etc. by the simple use of sequential art. She's currently a comic artist in residence at the Writer's House Pittsburgh, PA and a teaching artist at the Carnegie Museum of Art. When she's not drawing or teaching, she is usually walking or hiking out in the wilderness. To know more about the artist, check out her website: www.shuchitamishra.com.

I encourage students to use a positive tone in their comics as I or the educator help them with their dialogues in the lesson. The class emphasizes on every story being told, heard and respected. Students learn to appreciate and inspire each other through their diverse art styles and storytelling techniques.

Join us as we share our knowledge and enthusiasm around the ancient game of chess. Following the basics of piece movement, algebraic notation, material value of the pieces, our lessons will cover the principles/rules of the opening game, tactics/strategic planning of the middle game, and common endgame scenarios. We’ll analyze the games of the ‘greats’ as well as analyze the games of our future Chessmasters. This will be done in a supportive environment while stressing patience, sportsmanship, and respect for both the game and the members of our club. Club members will receive our exclusive workbooks and as part of our mission, hopefully a lifelong love for the game of chess. Any questions regarding our club, please call (888)44-CHESS.

Academic Chess has been teaching chess to youth and adults for 25+ years and has started chess clubs in over 60 schools in the City. We combine our love/knowledge of the game with animated/high energy lessons that instill that same love in our students. Former students include the youngest master in U.S history, a national 5th grade champion, and numerous USCF ranked tournament players. 2 things that we are most proud of; our students discover joy around the game of chess and many over the years have returned to us as adults to teach and to spread that joy.

In this course, participants will first gain explorational experience in a variety of textile art materials and processes, including hand sewing, embroidery, pattern making, stuffies, & finger knitting. Students will then use art as a vehicle through which to develop a growth mindset and explore problem solving, choosing the art processes that speak to them the most. This class is designed taking into account developmental expectations for K-2 students, taking advanced concepts and breaking them down to the students’ level and adapting according to students’ interest. Additionally, this course weaves in several creative thinking skills, providing students with practice of tools for their creativity toolbox, empowering them to use creativity in their lives.

A-Z Creativity has come about after 20+ years of learning to be creative. In high school, Keriann was always a good student who was very adept at doing what she was told. She could write the essay as it needed to be written for good marks and follow the steps of the lab. She could not, however, develop an original idea in art class: her ability to deviate from what was in front of her and be creative was lacking. This led Keriann to continue to challenge herself to be creative by choosing to take art classes and study to be an art educator.

Since then, Keriann has spent her adult life seeking out creativity in both formal and informal spaces. Formally, she has studied art education and creativity, majoring in Art Education in undergrad and going on to receive an MA in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a MS in Creativity & Change Leadership from Buffalo State College. Informally, she has pushed herself as an artist, taking workshops in experimental media and solving visual and technical problems in ceramics, digital media, and printmaking. When it comes to teaching, Keriann has over a decade of experience working with individuals and groups globally to open their creativity, specializing in working with children. Keriann’s experience has qualified her to deliver intentional programming in demystifying and fostering the development of creative habits and life skills through arts programming. Keriann is passionate about creativity and looks forward to working with you to help bring creativity and creative practice into your life.
