2018 Village Victory Cup a Resounding Success!
This year’s Village Victory Cup (VVC) was better than ever with over 300 seniors vying for the coveted Village Victory Cup, the Spirit Award and individual medals. Once again The Village of Westland was victorious in capturing the Village Victory Cup, while The Village of Oakman Manor brought home the Spirit Award. The Villages practice throughout the year for this event and also glean Wellness and exercise advantages over that entire time period. Tom Wyllie, director of Wellness for PVM, believes it could be considered “stealth health” since participants have fun and do not even think of it as exercising. He is also dedicated to making the event one which benefits everyone, even those who are in wheelchairs or are visually impaired. Focusing on mind, body and spirit, the VVC is not just about fast walking but also includes the Puzzler in which teams have

fifteen minutes to put together a puzzle they have never seen before as fast as they can. The connection and camaraderie of everyone involved is also part of the magic. Volunteers have stated that they will continue to be a part of the Village Victory Cup every year for as long as we will invite them. This year’s event attracted national attention with over 2.88 million people checking it out on-line or with traditional media. Celebration for the Weinberg Green Houses®
On June 20th supporters, board members, residents and staff of the Weinberg Green Houses® at Thome Rivertown Neighborhood gathered to celebrate what is a notable accomplishment of national accord. Residents of the Weinberg Green Houses® are also participants of the PACE Southeast Michigan program, the only one of its kind in the nation. This new model of housing and care prevents the need for traditional nursing home care. Participants have relayed that this is the best place they have ever lived and that they feel safe and healthier. The celebration was a way to thank the many supporters of the Weinberg Green Houses® and the Thome Rivertown Neighborhood. Leading PVM Into the Future Joining our illustrious group of PVM board members over the past year have been several new members who will add important expertise as we broaden our scope of services and position PVM as a leader. And following on the tenure of George B. Millush as Chair of the PVM Board for two terms, we are fortunate to have a continuation of strong leadership in our new Chair, William Ball.
WILLIAM L. BALL William L. Ball has assumed the role of PVM Board Chair following on the heels of George B. Millush, who served for two consecutive terms. Mr. Ball is a true public policy expert having retired from General Motors after 25 years with the company. At the time of his retirement, he was Vice President, Public Policy, for OnStar, LLC. OnStar is GM’s in-vehicle wireless communication service that includes such services as automatic crash notification and remotely initiated slowdown of stolen vehicles. His responsibilities included leading all aspects of OnStar’s public policy at the state and federal levels. He was previously Director, Strategic Planning and Program Management for the GM Advanced Technology Vehicles Group. Mr. Ball’s expertise with strategic planning was invaluable while chair of the PVM Strategic Planning Committee and will continue to guise PFM into the future as we continue to implement our strategic plan. Numerous awards and task forces are a part of his career fabric. We will be well served with Mr. Ball at the helm for PVM.
GARY LEY For 26 years, Mr. Ley served as the President/CEO with the Garden City Hospital health system, which included long term care, home health services, insurance program, medical education and a practice management division. During his tenure, the hospital enjoyed significant growth and expansion and was recognized by Truven and other organizations for outstanding quality and workplace excellence. Last year, he was appointed Executive Director of The Accreditation Association for Hospitals/Health Systems in Chicago. He is a Life Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Ley has also been a leader in civic engagement having served as Chair of the American Red Cross, SE Michigan Blood Services Board of Trustees, the Southeast Michigan Hospital Council, the Michigan Hospital Association Legislative Policy Panel and the Garden City Chamber of Commerce. In addition, numerous other community and charitable organizations have benefited from his service as a board member.
ROSHUNDA PRICE Roshunda Price is Chief legal counsel for mergers and acquisitions, strategic investments, real estate and other commercial transactions at Meritor. She is recognized for bringing a blend of legal and business experience to create successful strategies in both the for profit and nonprofit arenas. She also has experience in healthcare law and is a Certified Public Accountant. In addition to her law firm experience, Ms. Price’s prior experience includes serving as Vice-President, Assistant General Counsel and Assistant Secretary of the Detroit Medical Center. Ms. Price also conducted academic training as a law professor and director of a clinical law program at the University of Michigan Law School.
RUSSELL C. YOUNGDAHL, JR. Russ Youngdahl brings a wealth of expertise and experience in the finance and management arenas. Presently he is a Founding Partner and Managing Member for Northstar Capital, LLC, an investment and management services enterprise. Throughout his career Mr. Youngdahl has served as a current or past director of ten companies considered to be dynamic leaders in finance and business. These include Penske Financial Services and Detroit Diesel Corporation. Providing board leadership for a cadre of community organizations has also been a focus. This has included serving on the Board of Trustees for his alma mater, Alma College, over a twelve year period. We are pleased to have the benefit of his guidance and counsel.
PVM Represented in Pewabic Pottery Tile PVM has commissioned an original Pewabic Pottery tile which will be used to thank individuals who have served us in an extraordinary manner. The inaugural tile will be presented to George B. Millush, immediate past Chair of the PVM Board, for his unparalleled leadership and support over many years in a variety of capacities.

PVM Leaders Honored by LeadingAge Michigan The 2018 LeadingAge Michigan Annual Conference in May was the setting at which several PVM leaders were honored: George B. Millush, Jr., Immediate Past Board Chair, received the prestigious Trustee of the Year Award. This award recognizes an individual who has served with distinction on the governing board of a LeadingAge Michigan member organization and thereby made an outstanding contribution to the well/being of seniors, to the employees who serve them, and to the organization’s mission. On hand to celebrate with George were Bill Ball, Chair of the PVM Board, and Roger Myers, president & CEO of PVM.
George is now retired as the Director of Financial Process Planning for DaimlerChrysler, a unique position dedicated to process, systems and organizational development. His expertise has been instrumental in the growth and success of PVM having served two consecutive terms as board chair. Previously he was chair of the Village of Oakland Woods. Since completing his terms as the PVM chair, George has returned to serve on the Village of Oakland Woods Board.
Betsy Mianecki from The Village of East Harbor received The Caring Spirit Award
Betsy Mianecki, activities coordinator for The Village of East Harbor, received an important award titled The Caring Spirit Award. This award recognizes the achievements of front-line staff and direct care employees who have made a significant impact upon the lives of older adults through exceptional proficiency and personal commitment in the delivery of quality services in the performance of his/her job duties. Betsy began her career at PVM as a fitness
instructor. Her supercharged personality made her a favorite of residents from the start. It was soon evident that her talents were needed to revamp the Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care activity programs. Her infectious laugh, boundless energies and creative programming took the programs to an all-new level. She continues to be an integral part of the quality programming at The Village of East Harbor and for PVM. Congratulations to George and Betsy. Thanks for your leadership which exemplifies the Service Excellence for which PVM is known. These awards capture the spirit and energy of PVM and our fellow LeadingAge members. Jo-Ann Hale, a favorite face at the PVM home office and at many events as a volunteer, received honorable mention for Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations, Jo-Ann. You are Volunteer of the Year in our hearts and minds!

PVM Expands Its Services via Management Agreements We are pleased to share the news that PVM has recently added three new locations to its management portfolio.
Lynn Street Manor The Senior Citizens Housing of Onaway, Inc. and Presbyterian Villages of Michigan (PVM) announced the signing of a Management Agreement for Lynn Street Manor located in Onaway effective August 1, 2018. Lynn Street Manor is owned and governed by Senior Citizens Housing of Onaway, Inc., a non-profit organization. Lynn Street Manor provides senior housing in an appealing environment to enhance the quality of life for its residents. This 60 unit affordable senior housing community is located at 4255 South Lynn Street in Onaway and operates under the guidelines of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It was established in 1984 and has provided consistent quality living to seniors in the greater northeastern Michigan region. Sandra Grulke, Board Chair of Lynn Street Manor, stated: “PVM has an extensive background in managing senior housing. Their experience and reputation will be an asset for Lynn Street Manor going forward.” Bill Ball, Board Chair of PVM stated: “We look forward to working together to provide a quality living environment and amenities for residents, family members, staff and the surrounding community.“

McFarlan Villages Hosting Students from Taiwan McFarlan Villages recently hosted four long-term care graduate students from Taiwan. Through a partnership with the University of Michigan-Flint Nursing Department, McFarlan provided job shadowing and internship opportunities for the students over a three week period. The goal of the students’ course is to compare long term care in the United States to that in Taiwan. Feedback from the students has been very positive! They have been very impressed that our communities aren't institutional, feel like home, and that our staff and residents interact like a family. They have also enjoyed being in the Flint
college and cultural center, learning about our city’s revitalization. The cultural exchange for our staff has been very rewarding. This has sparked what promises to be a long-term relationship of sharing best practices with each other. We wish the students much success in their careers. Another exciting turn of events for McFarlan was receiving a Partner of the Year Award for the McFarlan Charitable Corporation at the annual meeting of the Valley Area Agency on Aging. Erica Thrash-Sall was on hand to accept the award for McFarlan.

A Woman of Courage and Determination One of the qualities which makes PVM special is the people who are key players in the organization: residents, volunteers, board members, staff and community partners. For this edition of Outlook we bring to our readers the story of a special resident at The Village of Spring Meadows in Jackson. Her story is one of courage and victory over despair and hardship. Caroline D. Parker had a promising future as a writer. While receiving a Bachelor’s in General Studies degree from the University of Michigan, she was recognized with the Avery Hopwood Award for exemplary work in essay writing, winning first place that semester. Caroline went on to earn a Master’s degree in Public Administration in Political Science at Eastern Michigan University. From her early years on Caroline was always writing plays and using her talents in interesting ways. Then her life took a turn via two separate diagnoses of cancer; multiple myeloma in 2010 and DCIS (breast cancer) in 2013. She was struggling while on chemotherapy and was living in a house with limited mobility options. Thus, she found herself lugging her laundry to a laundromat across town from where she lived at 3:00 am while feeling very sick. Caroline relays that every time she felt like giving up someone would come along to encourage her and give her inspiration. For that she is very grateful! Then she found The Village of Spring Meadows. After she moved in, she eventually and began to bring her life back to one
of hope and vitality. Caroline says that every time she does a load of laundry in her beautiful apartment she is deeply grateful to not have to “lug laundry all over Jackson in the wee hours of the morning.” She also says” “Thank you Lord, for another day and another chance to do better” every morning before she gets up. Since moving to Spring Meadows, Caroline relates that she is deeply appreciative as to how residents look out for each other and have formed a community bond.

Giving back has become Caroline’s mission in life. She serves on the Village of Spring Meadows Board and on the Jackson Housing Commission Board. She also provides tutoring and mentorship to at-risk and disadvantaged youth whenever possible. She will continue to maximize and improve her health by participating in the YMCA’s “Turning Point” program this fall; a program designed to help breast cancer survivors through specific exercises programs geared toward that demographic. A PVM resident for eight years, Caroline has found new energy and friendships through her participation in the annual

Village Victory Cup (VVC). It has also helped her physical condition. Caroline began participating in the VVC starting in 2016. In that time Caroline has won six medals: four gold and two silver medals. She has several future goals in mind. Her nephew is graduating from law school at Arizona State in May 2019 and she wants to be able to keep up with the rest of the family during celebration activities. Also Caroline is looking forward to taking up swimming to further aid her in achieving her health and wellness goals. She also hopes to fulfill her secret wish to take drum lessons very soon. We know that Caroline D. Parker, who championed and nurtured her love of writing and words, will continue to be an inspiration to fellow Village of Spring Meadows residents and all her know her.
PACE Central Michigan to Offer All-Inclusive Approach to Care for Seniors We are very excited to announce that PACE has expanded to serve 14 counties in central Michgain. This new program will offer a team approach to help keep elderly residents in their own homes and out of nursing homes as long as possible. This new offering for seniors is the result of a new partnership between Masonic Pathways and PVM. The two organizations have been recognized as quality senior living and services providers over many decades and have shared values. We look forward to working together to assist with quality of life for residents in central Michigan. A nationally recognized program, PACE has been a part of the fabric of PVM for some time via PACE Southeast Michigan in partnership with Henry Ford Health System. PACE Central Michigan will be located at 1750 E. Bellows St. in Mt. Pleasant, on the southwest corner of Isabella Road and Bellows Street. It is run by equity partners Michigan Masonic Home and Presbyterian Villages of Michigan.
Rosebush Manor Cools Off with a Dunk Tank On a Hot Summer Day

August. Several residents, volunteers, board members and staff took turns as targets for the dunk tank. Chief among them was resident Ruth Cotter, who at the age of 92, was determined to use her stint in the tank as a fundraiser drawing in $78.00. Her comment was: “If I’m going to go in there I am going to make some money!” An annual event, The Community Band Fest is a way to connect with resident and staff family members as well as the community at large. There is always something for all to enjoy. Two local bands performed; and there was also a Kids Money Hunt and a Bean Bag Toss event. A Hawaiian theme and a lunch added to the festivities. It was a great day, according to everyone who attended. And this is proof positive that PVM residents know how to enjoy life at any age. Engaged and vibrant are two adjectives which apply to The Village of Rosebush Manor.

PVM and EHM Senior Solutions Team Up to Host Technology Summit

EHM Senior Solutions and PVM staff have seen the need for some time to add technology and smart homes to positively impact quality of life for seniors and to allow them to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. There are a multitude of products in the marketplace; and it can be quite confusing as to where to turn. Our goal was to explore technology and find the best solutions for aging in community. Thus, our two organizations wanted to start down the path of demystifying technology and seeking out what would be the best solutions for an array of needs. On July 27th we hosted a Technology Summit and Trade Show at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Technology experts from around Michigan and the nation were on hand to showcase state of the art technology solutions. Presentations were given by national content experts, including Ginna Baik, Senior Care Practice Leader for CDW Healthcare, a leading provider of technology solutions for healthcare organizations nationwide and Shelia Cotton, Professor in the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. Demonstrations of products were available. EHM Senior Solutions took the lead with an entire cadre of technologies to allow seniors to stay in their own home. Alert systems, smart homes, falls prevention technology, and new diagnostic capabilities which allow you to have fun and create art while measuring your range of motion were among them. Also showcased were physical therapy methods which make the process easier. This included a key fob which stores your therapy routine to plug in at the equipment for coaching on what to do. Residents, other seniors, board members and staff all were quite impressed with the array of technology solutions highlighted throughout the day. Door prizes which included smart technology items were given out to participants.
